Alongside the announcement of the Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis 'Expansion Pack' for the Switch Online service, Nintendo's Yoshiaki Koizumi revealed two new (but old) controllers.
Wireless versions of the iconic Nintendo 64 controller and Sega Genesis (Mega Drive) gamepad will be available to Switch Online members. They're priced at $49.99 / £39.99 / €49.99 each and are expected to launch around the same date as the expansion service, in late October.

$49.99 USD EACH???
I'll take 8.
I admit it would be nice to play n64 games with an actual n64 controller- playing them on modern controllers just doesnt feel right.
I need that N64 controller. Games feel kinda wrong with an actual modern stick.
Myes ...
"I like money"
Dang, Thats alot for a controller made like idk, 20 years ago. but that sega controller is looking at me.
I do have to wonder if the control stick on the N64 controller is as brittle as the original... I've had like 5 N64 controllers through the years and all of them are borderline unusable, for my money it's the worst 1st party controller that I have ever used.
I want the N64 controller, because it's a wireless N64 controller.
It'll unironically be useful for lots of things that aren't a freaking expansion pass for a subscription service that was already desperately in need of added value.
Would love a new controller. Would love if the 64 community can get this to work in original hardware with a dongle. Come on 8bitdo
I think I only want one of these. But wow just think $200 to play 4 player Mario Kart 64 the original way lol!
Mega Drive controller feels overpriced compared to the RRP for the SNES controller. N64 controller price seems fair as I recall that's about what it cost 25 years ago, so adjusting for inflation it's actually cheaper. Looking forward to playing Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time as nature intended!
Again...
Thanks, I hate it.
Okay, I probably should say more but getting real ******* annoyed about this NSO business. I miss Virtual Console and not having to pay for online.
@Expa0 : Given Nintendo’s QA track record with Joy-Con...
With extra fee... hmm
Nintendo Russia (I stick to their version lest there should be [even more] release discrepancies) helpfully fineprinted that they wouldn't be selling these. Belarusian retail might still import them from elsewhere, though... not that I'm interested. But the very notion of playing Sega games on a Nintendo console with a Sega controller... I'm not witty enough to do it justice. Trust Ninty announcements to make me mirthfully grin even at the things I'm not in the market for.
The beautiful genesis controller is almost tempting.
That'll be £40-£50 then. Ouch
Didn't the megadrive controller have six buttons?
Megadrive Controller Japan Six Buttons
Banjo Kazooie confirmed. Guess MS is okay with it after all.
Only way I will get an N64 controller is if the sticks last longer this time around, those things were so fragile.
To be able to play Mario 64 with a brand new N64 pad is an experience everyone should have. (If you moan about 3 hands, you don't get the philosophy, as nieve as it was I guess.)
The 3-button one again.
They literally have one of the best controllers for 2D games sitting right there with the 6-button one, but they keep insisting on this one. Why? It can't save them that much money.
Hopefully Nintendo will include the expansion pack port on the new version of the new controller. we may need it if we want to play games like Pokemon stadium. those nifty expansion packs and other n64 controller accessories were required for some games. unfortunately some of those games will receive updates as a work around.
it would also be nice if Nintendo will releases color variants of the controller. we had color options for the system back in the day and it would be great to see them again.
Expansion pass for the online service? How many more tiers are they gonna wants us to pay now?
Way too expensive. Will buy them anyway. I am a controller fiend.
These controllers work easily on other systems, right?
I can't believe I'm going to spend $200 on Bluetooth N64 controllers but as soon as the Mario Parties are released on the service it will be worth it.
@Purgatorium I'm sure 8bitdo will come out with adapters in no time.
@Snatcher Just get the 2.4ghz 8Bitdo or Retro-Bit ones, they are much cheaper and less laggy.
@Expa0 ahem…. Joycon drift…. Switch…. Unusable 3 months down the line
Do you think Nintendo will release different colors eventually? Also is it easy to get a hold of these controllers they're releasing or do they sell out within 3 minutes?
RIP the 64 mini
@fafonio its being called "switch'(lite)
Can you use the N64 controller with a PC. No interest on overpaying for that subscription but should be a dream come true with emulators
@reporterdavid hahaha naah, it’s not the same thing. I’d rather have a good looking mini console which I can hack and put all the games that won’t come to NSO.
But I’ll take what I can get
I hated the N64, the graphics SUCK MONKEY ****s and as for the Genesis...... wow talk about buying the same games over and over and over again. How many freaking times does Sega get to repackage Sonic? I mean seriously dig out some real skeletons out of the Sega closets and offer those for a change. As for the $50 bucks per out dated controller, NOPE, not me, the N64 controller was one of the worst designs ever.
Would be nice if I could use the Sega Genesis Mini controller for this.
Did not love the games of that era but totally into N64 controller, genius avant-garde work.
Just for Mario64 and ISS64, I’m in.
And Wave Race 64, and Shadows of the Empire’s first level.
I feel like I'm one of the few who actually loved the Virtual Console. I always supported it and never once said it should be abandoned. For years, most online seemed like they hated it. Well, they got their wish.
Win for Nintendo, they got me calling it NSO now instead of NO.
But I'm only calling this NSO+ b/c that's all it needs to be called.
The + is for
$50 for these controllers is a joke. There are great companies making retro controllers for less right now.
I am all for that N64 controller. I have no idea why some people seem to hate it, but I always loved it, there is just something about the shape of it and the way you hold it that always felt uniquely appealing, especially with that Z button. Playing N64 games just doesn't feel right without it.
I might be able to accept $50 for a N64 controller (those were like $30 new originally, so that probably adds up with inflation) but $50 for a single Genesis controller seems insane.
Ain't paying the premium for the extra games but I like the looks of that N64 controller...
As a 90s kid it's crazy to see Nintendo make a Sega controller.
@Trajan I was about to post it... Dang crazy times, indeed
Hope they have different colors for the N64 controller
@shonenjump86
Have you tried it? I feel like it might work.
You need Rare Replay to complete the N64 collection. I wonder what N64 games will be released on Switch, they didn't release many for the Wii U VC.
@zapswitch nah, I haven’t actually. I’ll mess around with it to see.
Ugh. I’m a sucker for all these additional switch controllers but I WISH that was the Genesis 6-button controller 😖😫
There is no way they can release the original N64 controller with an original stick...right? Why wouldn't they upgrade it.
I'll definitely buy N64's controller and I would buy Genesis' if it was the 6 buttons. I'll stick with my 8BitDo M30 for Genesis.
By the way. Genesis Online has no Appel to me, I bought the Genesis Classics (Switch and the even better Steam version)
I love all of these little controllers they offer up, but im not willing to spend on them considering they're for specific services that will one day be gone.
Online only with these give me a break.....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Honestly this direct sucked. I am starting to get tired with Nintendo never releasing games
@Aurumonado At this low charity price, give me 20.
Hope the N64 controller have built-in rumble pack!
Getting two of the N64 ones easy.
Cool but id rather gamecube games over n64
@nessisonett yeah me two but the sticks kinda feel weird on the N64 I tried playing with them but the sticks felt kinda thin and not very comfortable but I still might pick up one when they come for switch online even if I don’t prefer them I still like playing original stuff together.
@Ultrasmiles yeah there are a lot more GameCube games I have been interested in lately since I already have a sixty four but the sixth four is still a good add on hope it’s not like fourth dollars for online just for swag and sixty four though.
Sigh...unzips
I'll take 12
I'll buy the N64 controller even though $50 seems a bit much. Is a Genesis controller really worth $50 though?
While the N64 controllers in particular look great, here's my concern with this: the Switch is already at least halfway through its expected life cycle, these controllers supposedly ONLY work with Switch Online games, and when the servers go down, these $50 controllers will be relegated to being paperweights. And that's without mentioning the fact that Nintendo is raising the asking price of a service they've already had a proven track record for sporadic and lackluster support for.
This is case in point for why I despise subscription models. Bring back the Virtual Console or at least offer the option to purchase these games permanently AND tie them to our accounts which could be carried forward to the next console...along with the associated controllers. But of course that's another aspect of Nintendo's business practices to date that make such hopes slim at best.
@AtlanteanMan The SNES controllers can be used with any game that doesn't require inputs missing on them and on PC, the N64 controllers will probably be the same.
Just want to remind everyone that there is already an officially licensed Sega Genesis controller on the market for $35 that is wireless bluetooth, and works on the PC, Switch, and the original Genesis. Also it has the 6 buttons instead of the three on this one. It's available on Amazon from Retro Bit, and it doesn't require a Switch Online subscription to purchase.
Why not smash 64 unless they didn’t want to put it in since it might take away from ultimate
Why is it only a three button Megadrive controller? Are they either not going to release any six button Megadrive games or expect you to buy a new controller when they eventually do?
Can you play the games without the n64 controller as these will sell out fast and be on ebay for £200 in minutes of launch
@mystman12 Thanks for the insight. Unfortunately the issue with their future usefulness with Nintendo hardware or software is still absolutely a huge problem. The thing that really chafes about it is that they knew exactly what they were doing in getting rid of the VC and limiting the functionality of these controllers to a service they've scarcely supported and which will no doubt have its plug pulled shortly after they move on to their next console, maybe within 2 to 3 years.
Wow, are we going to get the N64-era sh*tty analog stick that disintegrates after three months, or the Switch-era sh*tty analog stick that disintegrates after three months? The suspense is killing me!

I like the look. My least favorite feature of the NES and SNES Switch pads is the slot on the back for charging. Thankfully, these look to use USB-C or similar.
Back in the day I modded by N64 sticks for sturdier Gamecube ones. Wonder if the same parts could work here.
@Razzy Years ago I swapped my N64 sticks for Gamecube sticks, worked great!
If it's as precise as the original and someone gets it working on original hardware I will snap one of these up! Nothing feels anywhere near as good when playing N64 games, so it will be interesting to see if they do replicate it properly.
Hopefully with more sturdiness!
Nop, not gonna get these or pay mor for the online subscription. Nintendo squuezing people for more money is so disappointing. Online play should not be a chargeable service in my opinion
$50 for N64 gamepad is insane. I'd gladly pay $25-30 just to replay S&P1 again, but no more than that.
They should have released an adapter so you could use real original N64 Gamepads.
I still have a few of them floating around here.
I do have 2 x N64 USB Adapters, but probably won't work on Switch. These Adaptoid adapters also supports real memcards.
@samuelvictor
Thanks for the info!
I never owned one, but have fond memories of playing SFII, so that makes sense.
And yeah, a restriction to the three-button version does seem to indicate that a subset of games will be released.
Unless the six-button version is to be released at a later date...
That N64 controller needs to rumble like crazy when I'm looking for secrets in OOT and blowing things up in Lylat Wars.
I had the six-button controller, but only used it for Street Fighter II: Champion Edition, so I'm not really going to miss it without that game.
Nintendo... is releasing... a Sega Genesis controller...
Wow.
The N64 one better not be an exact replica, those things were ground to dust pretty quickly. I hope the middle stick has been updated.
Can’t get my hands on that N64 Controller quick enough. Hopefully it’s got a better stick than the original, or at least a less fragile one.
Can’t justify £40 for the Megadrive controller though. The Retrobit officially licensed ones do the job very nicely and have 6 buttons. I use the Saturn one (best 2D pad ever) for a lot of my Retro games on Switch.
These controllers look nice, but... what happens in a few years when Nintendo shuts down the Switch online "service"? Forgive my ignorance here*, but I don't like the idea of only having access to the classic games if I pay a monthly fee. Virtual console was better.
*I don't own a Switch.
When did $1 = €1? Some strange exchange rates going on there...
@Rambler they released a 6 button one as playing fighting games was incredibly hard without it. If your not playing Mortal kombat or street fighter then it has no real use.
The west insulted again by a Japanese company. Problematic in this day and age and I’m sure would result in a backlash if it was the other way round. They get a six button version and we get three.
Honestly all that direct did was leave a bitter taste in my mouth. Nintendo have got arrogant from the switch success and now doing as little as possible. Them and Sony both at it and MS is hardly spoiling us. The whole industry has got arrogant and greedy. Even more so. Who thought that was possible
@Gwynbleidd haha. True. Honestly I expected better on the online switch thing… I didn’t think they’d do so little and expect more cash…. But yeah this industry was only ever gonna get more greedy
That middle stick on the N64 controller better be an upgraded one. Thing wrecked the palm of my hand back in the day.
If that N64 controller doesn't have a superior control stick to the original, I won't even think about getting it.
Loved the N64 controller back in the good ol' days. Actually, I still think it's the only good controller from the 90's. But damn, I really hate that they went for SEGA and not N64+Gamecube.
I’d pay a pretty penny to play Dune 2 on Switch. It would make sense to release it now to cash in on interest around the new film.
Price seems fair for the N64 controller, but that genesis controller would only make sense if it was a 2 pack like the switch Nes pads
Eh, what? I haven't been online for a bit. So Nintendo is releasing Genesis games on the Switch?
If so then it should just bite the bullet and made a bit for buying out Sega.
I might get an n64 controller just to compare it with my original controller for my physical n65. Also it would feel weird playing the games with a different controller
I hope that the n64 controller we can use the rumble pac or have it built in if not it ok but that awesome 🤩🤩
@AtlanteanMan Did it say anywhere that these are exclusive to the NSO games? I think they can be used for general use as well since the SNES controller could be used on Switch games. Not to mention they also can be used for PC as well thanks to Bluetooth. If they do make it available for every game then the controller would be great for both 2D and 3D games since the real problem with it on the N64 is that so few games actually used the D-pad. Not to mention it essentially has the 6 button layout of the mega drive controller everyone is mad about and acts as a good extra controller for Mario Kart or Smash Bros as long as they improve the joystick.
@sleepinglion Hopefully that'll be an option for these as well. Though, I'd prefer the stick to be good from the start.

I feel like my controller bookcase is gonna cave in soon.
Nice to see that the N64s 25th anniversary doesn't go by unnoticed. ^^
Even if Nintendo is celebrating it in a hilariously obtuse way that I won't be taking part of. :v
