Next month is looking pretty busy on the gaming front, and if the likes of Metroid Dread and the Switch OLED model isn't already enough, towards the end of October we're getting Mario Party Superstars.
The game channels a lot of classic games and boards from the early Mario Party entries and during the latest Nintendo Direct, we got a look at the return of several boards from the N64 entry.
These include Woody Woods, Yoshi's Tropical Island and Horror Land. There'll also be a minigame mode titled 'Mt. Minigames' - featuring a competitive survival course, co-op multiplayer course, tag match course and more. Here's a look at everything:
Will you be picking up Mario Party Superstars when it lands on Switch at the end of next month? Comment below.

I was hoping for Western Land from MP2, but Horror Land is also good.
While this game needed probably 1 to 2 more boards. (Probably Western Land) I can't complain about the selection.
I'm quite happy with that selection. Hopefully there's also the traditional secret bowser map.
@Reploid Western Land, Space Land, and Mario’s Rainbow Castle we’re my 3 biggies. Whelp, we got one of them and I still really like all of the other courses. Looking forward to true return to form for the series and hopefully we’ll either see DLC maps for this game or a full blown sequel!
So they keep talking about how the game has 5 boards from the Nintendo 64 games but is it just 5 boards total or 5 from the N64 ones and others from the Gamecube ones also?
I'm getting it either way as the 5 boards from the N64 game alone are worth it vs the trash boards Super Mario Party had where there's literally no challenge to circling.
@SpacedDuck 5 boards total. All spanning from the N64 Mario Party titles; that's what was advertised in the first trailer. They could add additional boards through DLC (I would love more N64 Boards such as Mario's Rainbow Castle, Bowser's Land, and Waluigi's Island) but I'll not count on it.
Kinda upset that this is a thing. I purchased the first Mario party game for switch and already felt ripped off, but charging $60 for a "new" game that should be DLC for the first is just kicking me when I'm down.
@Hero8-Bit agreed. That game got zero support outside of the recent online modes patch they clearly released to Beta test this games online features.
They easily could have released more boards for that game.
Im not being funny but with the roster of boards to choose from the selection should be in double figures. Peoples main concern and gripe with the last one was only having 5 boards. The boards do look better tho.
@Hero8-Bit the only things this game shares with the previous one is the "Mario Party" name, and some of the playable characters. It's not "dlc" material when the entire base of the game completely different.
Yeaaa I’ll be getting it. Tho I do still feel a little burned by super Mario party.
Wouldn't mind a "surprise" final board like Bowser Land or something.
It’s a shame there’s no Western Land but it’s a banging lineup for sure.
It's a pretty fool-proof concept considering how good the older Mario Party games were but all of the ones Nd Cube have developed so far have been terrible so I'm still a little skeptical about this. The fact that they're still only adding the bare minimum number of boards despite them being remakes isn't particularly encouraging.
I hate that I am so starved for a good Mario Party game on the go that I will buy this. At this point we should have been expecting 'all' of the boards from 1 2 and 3, not the ones that someone thought were the 'best'. At least it has a good heap of great minigames and the boards they chose were not the 'worst' in that series, but the best? Tell you what if they bring back the victory cutscene format from MP2 where the superstar gets to fight Bowser all can be forgiven. Be even better if the other players played a small role in the cutscene depending on their placement.
I'm probably not getting this. If they at least had double the boards that we're getting now, then I'd consider it, but Super Mario Party burned me so bad that I'm refusing to buy another Mario Party game.
I'm so glad I'm not the only one wishing Western Land is on there. But I WAS really hoping for Horror Land too, lol. My family is ready to play this over Halloween weekend!
If we had GameCube boards it'd be a instant for me but for now I'll wait.
Yoshi's Tropical Island, yeah!!
.... dunno if that'll be enough to get me to buy the game day 1 though, 5 boards seems really shallow considering this game is a compilation of the N64 games. It's less than all the N64 games had individually too. That's a yikes. Hope there's unlockables.
Mario Party has felt stale since number 3.
I've bought a couple of them after that and they all feel the same.
I'll pass.
I hope Nintendo supports this game with additional boards and minigames over time. I won't be holding my breath on that, though.
I was really afraid Nintendo would cater too much to Nostalgia and give Mario Party 3 the short end of the stick, and unfortunately that's exactly what happened. I'm still pretty excited for the game, but 3 should have had priority over 1. 3's boards are all great, and I wish we had gotten more than one.
I hope the game gets some DLC, but I'm not going to assume it will.
Great choices! I wish we also got western land, but that hope was gone when you think we already had space land.
Horror land has so many fun strategic moments, and the Yoshi island is just hilariously unfair! It's an absolute classic! 😂
I see Horrorland and Yoshi's Tropical Island and I make this a day one. I mean, look at my avatar.
I didn’t pick up mario party they had before this cause the maps weren’t that great and they took a long time to ad online multiplayer so I’m just gonna wait for this one and see how it turns up.
On the Japanese Mario party site they showed off all 100 minigames for anyone interested. There is a video compilation by Mario Party Legacy on YouTube... I'm pretty excited!!
Let's hope we get Pauline in some form or another
I wonder if you can play this game with the new N64 controllers announced in today's direct?
This is looking absolutely great and makes me even more disappointed in myself I purchased Super Mario Party. 😢
@Clarice doesn't that game have more maps?
I haven’t bought a Mario party in years but may nab this one to play with the family. I’d love to see the Wild West stage at some point to.
@reporterdavid I am not sure but this one looks better. Maybe it's the nostalgia though. 😄

@reporterdavid Four puny, miserable maps/boards.
@reporterdavid Super Mario Party has only four boards.
Surprisingly this is looking quite good compared to the previous Mario Party game.
Can this be played jointly with Switch Lites as controllers, does any one know?
@BTB20 oh, I thought 5 or more...
@BTB20 @Nightwalker alright...ok... that's a way to put it. it is better now then.
I’m still getting this because it’s one game my whole family will play together. I never played the N64 games so this will be new to me and my family.
I think they're probably capping the board count at 5 because then they can release more boards later as either paid or free DLC. It's a win/win for Nintendo because the cost of making more boards for the base game wouldn't be offset by the additional sales the inclusion would earn. Then Nintendo can release more boards as paid DLC for obvious reasons. Or they can release them as a free update to boost player morale about their purchase and also re-insert themselves into the news cycle for a bump in sales. The decision is purely strategic.
I am slightly confused about what this game is. When it was announced, I thought it was purely a mini games collection (like a "greatest hits," of sorts). But now it seems it is another "normal" entry in the series, featuring some past boards? I did not especially like the Wii U Mario Party release, or the last one released for the Switch, so I might give this a try if reviews are good.
Super Mario Party is fun, let's see if this one is more fun
Space Land and Horror Land are probably the two most nostalgic Mario Party boards for me....so they're definitely doing everything in their power to get me on board.
I haven't played Mario Party in forever though...
@YinYangYoshi
That's just an avatar?
Based on your name, I thought it was a self portrait!
@Gryffin That makes sense but the same exact thing could have been said about Super Mario Party.
@RottedQueen your confusion is warranted. I thought this was DLC for Super Mario Party at first. You might also be thinking of the 100 mini game collection for 3DS.
@mystman12 that's a fair point. It is odd that they never released DLC for it, especially since it sold 15 million copies apparently. The rumor is that the developer switched to making 51 Clubhouse Games. So maybe my theory is wrong.
Hoping they at least double the amount of boards quickly over time with free DLC updates & post-release content pretty much monthly like they've been doing with Mario Tennis & Golf on Switch.
They're looking as good as the game itself. But they're not enough! I hope they're considering adding more boards as free updates.
@zool yes, switch lites can be used as controllers, as well as the pro controller
@AngelSlayer 👍
I'm interested yet slightly ticked off. I bought Super Mario Party and was disappointed. The maps were weren't great and IMO, getting Coins was waaay to easy. Combine that with the lower Price for Stars and the experience felt watered down.
Here's 6 Coins for landing on a Blue Square, 10 for winning, and another 3 for clapping your teammates' hands! Now you're just 1 Coin away from 2 Stars!
I also believed Nintendo could have supported this game more. No reason we couldn't have gotten a few mini games or maps. I'll be a happy camper if Nintendo supports this game after launch, even if it ends up as paid DLC.
I really hope there's more than just 5 Boards Mario Party 1 even had 8 Boards!
Also i really miss Mario's Rainbow Castle and Bowsers Magma Mountain.
To bring more Boards as "Paid" DLC might not be a good idea, because it would split the playerbase or would people to force buy them.
I mean, if they would make "new" Boards play for free (if someone bought it you can play on it, you just cannot choose it by yourself) it would be great, but i dont think this will happen.
But whatever - i think i am going to buy this game anyways. Me and my best friend have played the ***** outta Mario Party 1 on the N64 - Super Mario Party was trash .... so i have high hopes we can "replay" our teenage years and have the same fun and experience we've had in 1999 (local couch coop - since he got no switch hahaha)
