Remember last year's 'Gigaleak', when all sorts of secret data and information from Nintendo's vaults somehow found its way online? Well, it appears that even more is now being discovered, including a number of Wii projects that were ultimately scrapped.
Plenty of these never-released titles are intriguing, but some will be of particular note for Nintendo fans. One of these is 'Project X', a Zelda game from Retro which we spoke about in detail earlier today, but another one that's caught our eye is a Metroid game that was to be developed by Intelligent Systems, the studio best known for its work on Fire Emblem, Paper Mario, and WarioWare. Oh my.
Shared in an ever-growing thread by Resetera user MondoMega, here are the reported cancelled Wii projects and other interesting little tidbits spotted so far (if you're wanting to avoid hearing about too many games that were never supposed to see the light of day, now's your chance to head back to safety).
- 'Tennis' for Wii; guess this was folded into Wii Sports.
- Excitetruck is known as 'World's Toughest Race'; notes say "A racing game that looks like a 4WD truck version of Excitebike with realistically oriented graphics."; guess they figured they should actually put Excite in the title.
- Project Hammer is listed as 'Hammer Man'. Notes says "Aiming to create a Dynasty Warriors type game that will sell in North America."
- Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn is just called 'Fire Emblem GC 2'. Note says "The direction is to increase the movie portion, which was well-received by users in the GC version."
- Sphere, unreleased n-space game, is mentioned. "Female spy infiltration action. Metal Gear-like switching between multiple remote cameras".
- 'Metroid', developed by Intelligent Systems. Notes say "Release some time after Metroid Prime."
- 'Project X' by Retro Studios; the "action game featuring the Sheik from Zelda: Ocarina of Time."
- 'KNIGHT Wars' by Kuju; "Fantasy-based strategy with Battalion Wars assets."
- Super Smash Bros. Brawl is listed as 'Project Sora', developed by HAL and Game Arts.
- 'sword fighting theme' developed by Y'sK; no idea what game this is.
- Mario Strikers Charged (called 'Super Mario Strikers 2') was intentionally aiming for a EU launch first, and was aiming to be a launch title (which it missed).
- 'Revo R' by HAL. Notes say "Aiming for Pop Art style graphics" which made be think it was this unreleased Kirby game, but the genre is listed as Racing.
- 'Jump Super Stars' for Wii? Developer listed as Ganbarion.
- 'DDR Mario 2' on Wii. Developer is Konami, obviously.
MondoMega also unveils a variety of working titles for DS games, such as 'Tingle RPG' which would naturally have gone on to become Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland; a game called 'Plucker' which was apparently proposed by Magic the Gathering creator, Richard Garfield; and suggests that Wii's Captain Rainbow was originally listed as a GameCube game.
If you're interested in seeing more, the leak has also lifted the lid on some early Wii Remote concepts; otherwise, join us in dreaming about an Intelligent Systems take on Metroid in the comments below.

And yet we got Federation Force. There is no justice in the world
The Metroid title mentions having both 2D and first-person depending on the remote's orientation, which suggests that IS originally worked on Other M
"DDR Mario 2 on Wii. Developer is Konami, obviously"
Dance Dance Revolution Mario Mix 2 was actually exist but scrapped ?! 😲😲😲
Oh, crap...
Wow, You know, nintendo could come back to some of the scrapped ideas for a later game, or maybe they already are.
@Fiyaball I wonder how that could have changed Other M from the one we got.
@Nymos
Actually i have some interest with Federation Force due to gameplay similar as Armored Core (1st person view shooter from mecha).
I didn't even play Armored Core games but i have ever watched the gameplay from my siblings when they were playing on PS2.
@Anti-Matter I'm glad to hear some people got enjoyment out of it. I still haven't been able to beat it due to its slow-paced and bizarre missions that don't really fit the franchise. When I think Metroid, I don't think "protect the convoy" or "play golf to activate a system". Might get round to beating it one of these days.
So many cancelled games that people would actually want, yet they release million selling gems like Code Name: Steam and Hey, Pikmin! Sometimes I think Nintendo's CEO's are doing everything in their power to keep Nintendo from being a true success.
Sphere sounds a lot like Republique.
@Chamver Codename Steam was a fantastic game. ...I'll agree on Hey Pikmin though.
@Nymos Its not your typical Metroid. Its a spin off called Metroid Federation Force starring the Federation. So "Protect the Convoy" makes complete sense. Put golf ball in thing though? Dumb.
They shoulda made Metroid Prime Hunters 2 instead. Hunters 1 had a pretty bland singleplayer but everyone I know loved the multiplayer for it, also Bounty Hunters aside Samus is a missed opportunity to delve deeper on.
Knock on Fed Force but I feel Chibi Robo got hit WAAAAY harder with Chibi Robo Zip Lash. That wacky experimental spin off (of the many that for some reason was on 3DS) was not what any Chibi Robo fan wanted but Nintendo thought it was a good idea to kill the series if it sells poorly on
@Tourtus I don't think it would change the biggest thing people hated. The story was not Team Ninjas fault, that was all Sakamoto.
A fantasy themed Battalion Wars Sign me right up for that. I really hope Battalion Wars gets a re-release at some point because it really was a gem.
@Anti-Matter i LOVE DDR Mario Mix!!!!!! 'Always smiling' is one of my favourite songs ever!!haha
Once again, while all leaks are either fake or bootlegged, an NL article like this can be assumed to be posted with a belief that this "gigaleak" is not the former - and the sheepish "somehow found its way online" doesn't lower the eyebrows naturally raised here. Leaks that big, if genuine, rarely happen by sheer accident. But click money doesn't smell, does it?🙄
@nhSnork The Gigaleak is data right from Nintendo, clever cloggs.
@Chamver Nope. Don't confuse your tastes with what would actually sell.
@LiamR are you stating that Nintendo shared it themselves? Then it wouldn't be called a leak.
@nhSnork i’d rather have this over the countless amount of nonsense rumours that are either wrong or just keep getting delayed.
Ofcourse you are right when guessed something a bazillion times and keep stating that it will happen next week.
could this canceled Wii Metroid game by Intelligent System, be one of the scraped version of Metroid Dread that Yoshio Sakamoto mentioned during E3 2021?
@BrintaPap credibility-wise, it sure can rank higher - but I still find it vaguely humiliating to consume entertainment industry information someone blatantly stole, in wholesale quantities to boot, for no other reason than personal entertainment. And my palm can itch to make contact with my face when others consciously promote such consumption for no other reason than avoiding a slow news day.
@Fiyaball so Intelligent System was not working at Metroid Dread? i trough they tried to make Metroid Dread work on Wii, since Yoshio Sakamoto mentioned during E3 2021, the game got canceled twice.
One has to wonder if any of these cancelled projects will end up becoming actual games ala Metroid Dread.
Jump Super Stars? Interesting, wander what this would of being the sequel to the two DS games, not sure who made them thou.
@TheIrishJackomon That is what I was thinking. They were actually good games.
This is not surprising given that Intelligent Systems already worked on Metroid 1 and Super Metroid.
??? confusion ???? ExciteTrucks and Mario Strikers Charged are real world games. i owned both.
Interesting pieces of information, if genuine.
How did this site become blue? It was always red before.
@twztid13 wii era color scheme was red. NL went back to red to correspond with Nintendo’s shift away from the wii (u) blue back to the classic red/white.
@twztid13
it’s blue when the news is Wii or Wii u
It’s orange when the news is 3DS
It’s red when the news is Switch
I’d take any of these on the switch!
@Nymos We got 4 Metroid games on the Wii, yet no one bought them.
KNIGHT Wars could've been the original Wargroove.
DDR 2: Mario Mix we 100% needed... I really enjoyed that as a family party option on GameCube and had it still on the Wii for some time. I even about 2 years ago got a replacement mat from Amazon to keep the game playable after losing the original mat to water damage.
Cancelled racing game with Kirby style graphics from HAL.
So Kirby Air Ride 2.
Kirby Air Ride 2 could have been in development but then subsequently cancelled.
Heck.
It’s the crossover you never knew you needed: Metroid Emblem.
Just imagine the relationship options for Samus!
@Lord ahh, i see, thanks. I guess i never read the wii u news much, since i didn't get one & didn't want to be tempted, lol.
@Edu23XWiiU i did, does that count, lol? I LOVED Other M, btw, also. Sucks they didn't sell. I didn't like Corruption, tho, the motion controls made it way worse than the 1st 2 for me.
'KNIGHT Wars' by Kuju; "Fantasy-based strategy with Battalion Wars assets."
OMG this could have been amazing ! i really miss Battalion Wars, such fantastic games, i can understand why Nintendo axed the franchise after sales of the second game were so unbelievably bad but it's a real shame, i'd love it to get another shot one day.
Still waiting for Dragon Hopper’s ROM to be leaked from Intelligent Systems.
I’d love to see that pop art Kirby game come back. I’m all over Kirby in new art styles.
@moodycat You don't know this but the same team that was Intelligent Systems also work with MercurySteam with Metroid: Samus Returns and Metroid Dread. Intelligent Systems (the studio, not the dev) themselves are now move to hardware quality check and doing R&D but the actual team lead by Sakamoto is still around and working closely with MercurySteam. So even though MercurySteam are making the latest game, Sakamoto and his team are the ones directing the project.
Intelligent Systems was already involved with Metroid before this, they helped code the original Metroid and Super Metroid.

@Jmjfrank
While I wouldn't use the word "fault", I'd say that the main creative force behind Other M was, indeed, Yoshio Sakamoto (Producer, Director, and Story). He's also the main creative force behind Metroid in general. Already in Metroid Fusion, Samus had some monologues not unlike the ones in Other M. So, yeah, Other M would've probably turned out not very different from what we got even if Intelligent Systems developed it, at least storywise (As a sidenote, he also wrote the recently remade Famicom Tantei Club games).
This is one of my arguments to say that Other M is a main Metroid instalment; Yoshio Sakamoto was fully involved with it, unlike the Prime games, which are produced by Kensuke Tanabe (Though Sakamoto is credited as "Special Thanks" or "Special Advisor" in them).
@Kiz3000 apparently it became Aragorn's Quest intros hidden in game files with alot of assets. Knight wars was renamed Paragon then became a lord of the rings game.
@twztid13 Yeah, Corruption's motion controllers didn't sell the game for me either. I prefer Other M. You and me are of the few Metroid fans back on the day, the rest are just hypocrites who claim to love Metroid, but never get the games. Hopefully with Dread, Metroid can find a new audience.
@Edu23XWiiU 💯
@Nymos Federation Force is much better than the fanbase that mostly hasn't played it has made it out to be. I would argue it's a better game with its amiibo support than the games Metroid games typically are. If you want the Metroid vibe from Hardball, it's there. You're investigating an abandoned temple on Bion that has a mysterious signal coming from within. That fits right in with Metroid. If your take away is "playing golf" from that mission, would your opinion of Phendrana Drifts be that it's a skateboard park? There's more going on.
