Re: 13 Switch Emulators Hit By Latest Wave Of Nintendo Takedowns

@The_Nintendo_Expat I do hear the argument that 'we need to preserve games because we can't trust Nintendo/other companies to do it'. Not sure I'd call it a strawman argument (admittedly, I'm saying that to defend my position so make of that what you will).

I also understand the argument for preserving games and - well - there are cases where it does make sense. So I am in favour on a case by case basis. However, I can't think of any/many examples where Nintendo didn't keep original art/code etc of their releases. Without wishing to spend too much time talking it out - I'm largely saying that Nintendo's shown they do preserve their stuff so why is it so important that the wider public starts wanting to preserve Nintendo's stuff too? They're certainly not sharing that with Nintendo as part of those 'preservation' efforts and not aiding in game development or in art collections.

@The_Nintendo_Expat I hear that argument and disagree. I only see a handful of people who seem genuinely into preservation - and even then, it still assumes that Nintendo don't do any preservation. The argument is also that other people will preserve games better than Nintendo can and that's a very tenuous argument

I've heard about that story of Nintendo being 'caught'. The deeper story, I believe, is that there's seemingly some evidence to support that theory and there's also some evidence to support that it's not quite what it seems on the surface. It's more sensational to report that Nintendo got caught of course.

@Protion9 ""Game preservation" or how to put yourself a moral white armour to cover stealing." Yeah, seemingly practically none of the people pirating games for 'game preservation' are preserving those games in anything other than their own PC or emulator device. It's not like they're putting it on Internet Archive.

There might be a few, sure, but probably just a drop in the ocean compared to those 'preserving' games for only themselves.

Nintendo has also shown they very much preserve lots of their own things (down to the original designs for Super Mario Bros). Too much of the internet thinks that just because something isn't shared for free or shared for someone else to preserve = something isn't 'preserved'.

Re: Nintendo Is Considering A Switch 2 Price Hike This Year, According To New Report

jsty3105

@NPC411 " if the Switch 2 isn't selling the best at almost $500, it isn't going to sell better at a higher price" - which is why other people are seemingly crazy to have wanted Nintendo to put more tech/ram/battery in the Switch 2 and claim they'd happily pay $600 for it. People can claim they'd purchase at x price if there's y tech in it - whether they actually do it is another matter entirely.

@FortniteJ Some valid points mixed in with some not so relevant ones.
If you're doing something to get your account banned without any way to get it unbanned (as Nintendo has done in some cases), then you don't give two hoots about game key cards anyway.

"If they don't like you for whatever reason, your console is toast and there go your game keys." This is blatantly false. There are no circumstances that allow for this to happen, and, more importantly, Game Key Cards aren't tied to consoles or accounts. Nintendo is as tied to it's terms and conditions as we are - they might not like you posting things like this but there's no way they can ban your account for 'any reason'.

I don't need the T&Cs to show that it'll be over 2.5 decades for any servers to be shut - why? Because the Wii was Nintendo's FIRST proper attempt at an online account system and it is STILL accessible to download older purchases. There's no reason why the Switch 2 will be worse. You say Nintendo can close it at any time. Sure. That's true. Is it possible they close it tomorrow. Absolutely not. Is it possible they close it next year? Also absolutely not. Is it possible they close it in 5 years? Also no. For the Switch 2 servers to be closed such to an extent that you can no longer even download previous purchases, these things HAVE to happen first. Wii Servers shut for download (This hasn't happened) > Wii U Servers shut for download (This definitely hasn't happened) > Switch 1 Servers shut for download (You honestly believe they'll shut this down before any of the others?).

I get that the internet has fuelled this irrational fear but just because it's possible doesn't mean that it'll happen quickly.

I don;t need to 'let that sink in' when it comes to SD Express card prices. All storage used to be expensive - they all get cheaper over time - 60MB HDDs used to be expensive. Nintendo didn't create the sd express format either so it's free for others to adopt and prices will fall. 1TB micro SD cards used to cost A LOT (Like about the same as buying a Switch 2). Now they're more affordable. Regular hard drives are dirt cheap because they're near obsolete now in many circles. They're loud, slow, and fail more quickly.

I'd certainly AGREE with you that it'll be great if we could store games on a hard disk like we used to with the Wii U. It'll be even better if I could connect an 8TB HDD to do so but I think that would be too darn slow to load games from so I don't think that'll be practical for the Switch 2. Maybe an SSD is a possible if the read speeds can be quick enough.

>Buying physical doesn't magically give you a permanent back up
"No need for a stolen "backup", when the PHYSICAL COPY stores the game."

I brought up that line because you only listed it as a negative in the Game Key Card section but didn't state it for the Physical section. Point is - losing a Game key card game is the exact same experience as losing a Physical game. In both situations, you can no longer play the game so it didn't make sense why you excluded it as a negative there.

Re: Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 Switch And Switch 2 Physical Version Download Requirements Revealed

@FortniteJ physical games:

can play without internet - yup
can play without permission by Nintendo - that's every game anyway.
can sell endlessly without anyone else required - Game Key Cards are EXACTLY the same here
no need for storage media - yup

digital games:

can at least download to your system
can't lose them
game keys:

can't play them without permission by Nintendo - same point as above. Got nothing to do with Nintendo and you don't need their permission.
Nintendo can stop reselling at any time they want
thus no resale value - irrational fake fear. Servers aren't going to be shut for over 2.5 decades at a bare minimum
lose the cart, and the game is gone, despite nothing on the cart - Buying physical doesn't magically give you a permanent back up
very expensive storage media
re-downloads all the time, because you won't be able to store that many games - only expensive now and you don't need to redownload all the time

Re: Assassin's Creed Has "Overperformed" This Quarter, Says Ubisoft

jsty3105

@The_Nintendo_Expat We've exchanged messages here several times given that we share quite different views of Nintendo's performance - but I should've gotten the Flight of the Conchords reference! In my defence, I only listened to the album and heard of the show and never really watched it. I kinda guessed your post was tongue in cheek rather than serious

Re: Oblivion, Skyrim And Fallout Switch 2 Physicals Will All Be Code-In-A-Box, Bethesda Confirms

@TheRazor I think the relatively high profile false accusation from a random redditor tipped the scales in favour of a name change. They were getting lumped in to CJS CD Keys issues. CJS CD Keys has happily jumped in to take advantage of the name change with ads reinforcing their name.

I say random redditor because they've since deleted their account after being challenged by CD Keys (now Loaded) and not being able to back up their story. Ign and a couple of other sites picked up the original story since it was a juicy accusation of Nintendo banning accounts buying game codes from other shops

Really interested in seeing whether Konami can return to form with the Switch 2 exclusive version of eFootball. I don't hold much hope but I'm pleased it's getting released all the same. Was a really pleasant surprise to see more games announced with gameshare capability - especially Orbital and Bomberman. Oh man, bomberman feels like it has the best gameshare capability at the moment - sharing with up to 3 other players is great!

Pragmata and Turok both look very appealing and Turok might scratch the first/third shooter itch for Switch 2 owners. Really nice to see Indy get a release and on a fully physical card too - lookingforward to FF7 Rebirth in the middle of the year.

Re: Switch 2 Storms Towards Its Forecast Target With 17.37 Million Units Sold

jsty3105

Untrue. Price increases are not binary things which are inherently bad or always justifiable. Video games aren't grocery items. There's a value tradeoff for some things that you have viewed as offering reduced value and that's understandable.

There's an arguement that the raised prices of games are due to increased workloads and time etc needed to get games at a higher fidelity - it's no secret that the video game industry has struggled with rising costs of game development for over a decade now.

Though the game vouchers programme has ended, I envision something else will take its place even if it's not a 1 to 1 copy of that offering. I didn't get any/much value from them myself and viewed them as being more expensive than buying during an eshop sale or a retailer sale.

I want to be clear that I'm not saying you shouldn't be unhappy.

I'm just challenging the framing of the reasons for unhappiness. Happy gaming on whatever platform you choose.
