@Zeeba @Cathalm this assumption that game key cards all crash in price is quite false. Outside of those 2 outliers you've mentioned, the 2nd hand and new prices haven't crashed for many many many game key cards.
@zeeba game key cards sell quite easily on eBay and other selling platforms. A quick search shows over 90 eBay sales of AC Shadows in used condition in like a month in the UK with a selling price of around £33++. Others just don't care that much and value still being to resell games.
Why are so many people, including Nintendo Life, calling Ocarina of Time 3DS a remake when it's really a remaster and I think even Nintendo calls it a remaster rather than a remake. I'm confused.
Saying profit margins improve over time feels slightly simplistic, I mean, that's generally what's taught in microeconomics but there are plenty of other factors to consider when it comes to margins.
@Falien You might personally pay $90 but I can already visualise 1000 articles and YouTube videos criticising the approach, especially if it's published by a 'big corpo' (probably worse if it's from Nintendo)
@HugoGED The physical price is also double their eshop launch price. There's no guarantee that other publishers pricing physical releases with a similar markup won't generate more complaints about 'greedy publishers'.
There's still time for people to claim that Silver Lining is being 'greedy' and 'anti-consumer' with this release and the price markup. It's also been on sale for £18 a couple of times on the eshop. So people who usually complain about port pricing may pounce on the cost of this physical release being over double the cheapest price it's ever been at.
@flighty @JohnnyMind I feel I should point out that the cost of a mid-level gaming PC is much higher (especially now) compared against a console. It's theoretically possible to get one that's relatively affordable but I feel it requires things like self-assembly, finding a way to get Windows cheaply, etc. I've assembled my own one to maximise my budget but not everyone has the desire to do so.
I also completely acknowledge that PC gaming can be a very cheap exercise (especially factoring free giveaways from various sites) but it's also not always consistent because the pricing approach is dependant on publishers. Some do deep discounts, some don't, and some only do for specific games/franchises. We can pick and choose examples all day long and it won't be very productive.
I love the Koei series but I've never seen any of the Nobunaga's Ambition or Romance of the Three Kingdoms games deeply discounted. So I've never seriously considered buying on PC since it's a sunk cost - I'd happily buy a physical release on console (in my case, the Switch)
My main takeaway from your list to Johnny is that the eshop prices, while slightly higher, are very competitive against PC prices with only a dollar or two difference.
@gcunit I'm trying to figure out /confirm whether the platform split is based on lifetime sales or whether it is based on the sales for that week. It makes more sense for it to be the latter but it's equally possible for it to be the former.
@Peach64 Odd. Mario Odyssey gets discounted about 2 times a year. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the same. I know there are a handful of games that are about once every couple of years rather than annually - like Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild (this had like an annual discount for a few years but seems irregular now)
@RumandCohibas and yet they still sell at the prices they set. That's neither anti consumer nor greedy. Basic business economics - you try to price at the sweet spot where supply and demand intersect.
@flighty And that's why videogames have been devalued to the extent that all the money has be made within like the first 6 months of release and games are expected to be practically free after like 5+ years - I personally don't even need to think about buying PC games since Epic and Amazon and GOG keep giving games away and have only bought a couple of GOG games over the past 7 years (which I could've waited on since one I bought 6 months ago, Phantasie, was in the March 2026 Amazon Prime Gaming giveaway).
I don't think the non-Nintendo pricing strategy is sustainable, particularly with the average cost of game development. It may not be the worst problem but I don't think it's far off.
Nintendo's 'long tail' sales for most of their games remains an enviable thing for other publishers.
@ChaosAzeroth that Bloomberg article you reference is probably wrong. Another group did some digging and believe that Bloomberg based their production estimates on Foxconn revenue
@DonnieTACO for so many of the Switch 1 years we also had people here and elsewhere requesting for a screen-free version for those who only play docked. Counter intuitive to whole essence of the Switch
@electrolite77 I'm reasonably convinced, by the tone and content of some of the negative comments here, that they think these are the only first party games for the whole of 2026.
They also read the title excluding the word 'includes' "Rumour: Nintendo's 2026 Plans Include New Star Fox & Zelda Remake, No 3D Mario".
I also notice many think OoT 3DS was a remake instead of the remaster that it was. Then again, that's probably quibbling a minor point when the root is likely that they want new games and if there is a remake then they want it to be for a Zelda game that hasn't had a remaster or a remake yet
@RainbowGazelle I think only a couple of times. The only one I remember was the Switch 1 Links Awakening.
Others complaining about there being many Zelda remakes already are likely to be confusing a remaster with a remake
@Sam_ATLUS I think they understand but demand Nintendo tell them everything. Nintendo has communicated many times, I think for more than 5 years, that they're not following industry trends of announcing games years in advance apart from a case by case basis. They've explicitly said on more than one occasion that they're focused on telling us about games that are 6 months ahead or less 🤷🏻♂️
@Oldstalk I feel that's a pretty poor attitude to take. Companies choose a short release window for various reasons. Leaks spoil it - pretty much always.
Edit: And let's not pretend telling gamers earlier will prevent leaks or will prevent the desire to consume leaks.
@Jalex_64 thanks for the reasoned reply. I don't feel it's shifting the narrative as we're discussing pc physical sales. And the pc physical version is a steelbook. For what it's worth this sales chart is consistently displayed across different sites. It's of course possible for the chart to have an error but, not, I don't think, out of a deliberate choice. I also wonder if the split is based on total share or based on the sales that week (the latter would be easier to calculate).
I also think it's not outside the realms of possibility for PC physical sales to overtake PS5 due to Capcom's push in recent years to target pc gamers. The physical version also included (or maybe it focused on) a steelbook option
@Jalex_64 think it's a massive stretch to call the PC version obscure just because you personally didn't know of it. Resident Evil has had a fantastic launch and it's done really well on PC.
@Jalex_64 I think it's more like a case of you not quite believing the numbers. I also imagine it would a heck of a scoop if you found several major flaws (as this would be) and could back it up - especially given that this is a respected market research company and not some joe blog calling shops around the UK to get figures.
@hammers1man it's been fairly easy to get the Switch 1 version for under £40 and also fairly easy to resell for around £30. Nintendo's big franchises tend to resell for decent money so you can end up spending around £10 in total (I accept that reselling a game isn't an exact science)
You can get the Switch 2 DLC pack for under £15 from Loaded I think.
For this Switch 2 edition that includes the dlc on card, I've been seeing prices of about £55 - which is still high but you can probably resell it later for like £40 I guess (or more if you're doing it relatively close to launch).
I'll also add that I have a firm viewpoint that it's crazy that videogames are those things that gamers devalue faster than cars. A car that's 20 years old can often be very expensive to maintain unless you're skilled at restoring it - a good game that's 20 years old doesn't automatically become worthless by it's age (otherwise Good Old Games might as well give away their catalogue)
@Peach64 apologies then. your previous comment didn't sound like you were critiquing the article and sounded like you were critiquing Nintendo for thinking that these releases would constitute a bumper year. The latter sounded like an odd critique given that this is just a rumour and given that we don't really know much about what's planned for the second half of the year
It's quite a pity that GoNintendo is one of the few sites with more complete reporting on this matter instead of sites that just report on the headline
Others have done some more investigation and the numbers appear to be quite suspect:
"As NPW points out, either Mochizuki or their insiders may have looked at the Foxconn data shared above to surmise that it indicates a slowdown in Switch 2 manufacturing. NPW also goes on to say that Foxconn’s February revenue decreases every year because of Lunar New Year (across Jan-Feb in 2025), so in their opinion it would be “dubious to interpret that as an indicator of production cuts.”"
The key data:
"- in Oct-Dec, Foxconn made ~42.5B NTD; that may correlate to 7M NS2 units sold in Q3
in Jan, FTC made ~13.4B NTD, and if that holds for Feb-Mar, it would be ~40B NTD for Q4, correlating to ~6.5M units
Feb revenue dropped to ~7.2B NTD, and if that holds for March, would would be ~28B NTD for Q4, correlating to ~4.5M units; a ~31% reduction"
Think some are over reacting as if the rumoured remake is the only 1 of 2 'big' Nintendo games coming this year - as if there aren't going to be more and as if this rumour covered all the Nintendo games planned for 2026
@Zeeba we all lean either to optimism or pessimism. It's possible to be pragmatic and optimistic but your questions about possibilities didn't lean that way This isn't meant to be a criticism but I didn't see much 'hope' in them
@jco83 yeah - shrugs - I was initially really confused but have come to terms with different groups having different perceptions.
For your last point, yeah - that'll be hard to tell since we have no access to sensitive cost data. Undoubtedly, they'd have factored in possibly reduced stock requests from retailers, a small uptick in digital sales (I haven't studied/researched how/whether Nintendo Switch gamers are price inelastic - as in a measure of how we might be affected by price changes), and other things like changes in distribution costs and inventory costs
@Sirko purchasing contracts vary wildly in duration depending on purpose and what's being purchased. Nobody knows whether they were for 2 years, 3 years, or 5 years (or more).
It's highly implausible to imagine that it was only for a year.
@johnedwin "the us price for switch 2 is $100 dollars more then the switch 2 price in japan who is getting cheated?"
No one is getting cheated if you paid attention to why the Switch 2 is priced cheaper in Japan. Crucially, you need to factor in the relative purchasing power in Japan and not convert prices to USD and imagine this with US wages in mind. Also, you're completely omitting that the Switch 2 in Japan is region-locked.
@Zeeba there are lots of things people can say about "What Ifs". It's possible to consider them negatively, as you've phrased, and it's possible to consider them positively.
I'm an eternal optimist, which probably results in me butting heads more often than not with pessimists. Neither group is going to be exactly right.
@Teksette "Doesn’t it? There was price parity. Now I’m paying a $10 premium to get a hard copy of Yoshi or, most likely, any future 1st party Nintendo game."
This assumes that physical prices were getting increased instead of digital prices being lowered. The former is untrue (despite some gaming media deciding to report it that way).
@Zeeba "Will all physical games be $10 more?" - if you're positioning this as a bad thing then yes. If you're taking the news as how it's intended to be taken, then no. It's a case of all digital games being $10 less. Is there a difference? Mainly just in how you as a consumer view the change and whether you think it is good or bad.
I think it's good - and you clearly think it is bad. Will this mean even higher prices? Highly unlikely - that's conspiracy theory stuff. Think of the physical price as the RRP and the digital price will be lower than that.
@gojiguy Given that gamers across all mediums have been asking for digital to be cheaper for over a decade (I continue to drum this point), this is an unreasonable assumption. https://www.cbr.com/digital-games-should-be-cheaper/ - From 2020 - Why Digital Games Should Be Cheaper Than Physical Ones

@Wierdo perhaps, but it's also been publicised here and in other gaming media that the cost of electronic components has risen, especially the ones for older technology. Also - this article explains things quite nicely - https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2025/05/chips-arent-improving-like-they-used-to-and-its-killing-game-console-price-cuts/
