It's a pity. When the Switch was announced, One of the most interesting things when the Switch was the possibility of having entire games in one cartridge instead of needing to download the rest. Too bad manufacturing costs coupled with reluctant publishers scuppered that dream...
People will always want to pirate Nintendo stuff - console power has very little to do with it though it admittedly makes emulation more feasible since emulation requires a lot of power.
I'm 100% confident that even if Nintendo releases a console that's the most powerful one in the generation, people will STILL pirate Nintendo games from that console as soon as they can.
Maybe I'm in the wrong forums but I sincerely don't see the same level of vitriol and support for piracy regarding things that Sony and Microsoft didn't provide. I didn't see cries to emulate/steal non-backward compatible games when Microsoft and Sony had their new consoles either.
I know there was backlash regarding provision for backwards compatibility but nothing approaching the backlash to Nintendo
@Mortenb "How does it make sense to be illegal to help people hack their own system. Is it soon going to be illegal to help me when I lock myself out of my house?"
What a bizarre argument. The analogy just doesn't work here.
@Shambo gosh. What a terrible view and a terrible way to totally misunderstand things. You're describing the truly unscrupulous, and they don't represent everyone who's ever had to sell a product or a service.
@RobbWes do you have the right screwdriver? Apparently Nintendo uses screws that require a specific type of Japanese screwdriver. A phillips head screwdriver has a high chance of stripping those screws
Plugging my fan VO of the SteamWorld HeadHunter teaser trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJ9OOhvEgdA "In a world of dust and steam. Will cooler heads prevail or will you lose yours - for, another?!"
@Eagly think you'll be surprised that it costs significant amounts of time, money, and resources to research, design, develop, build, market, and distribute them
Only issue now is the port-begging from everyone else who demand it on a 'more capable' platform facepalm - especially in light of the Digital Foundry analysis
@Kimba-lion Appreciate your work is hard but the pay isn't for just talking and making sound effects. It's for acting. Anyone can talk - not everyone can act. I can talk but I'm well aware my acting range is quite narrow.
@PepperMintRex slightly depressingly, my takeaway from all the discussion over here is that many consider VA work to be very simple work and doesn't consume any notable amount of energy. Sure it's not quite hard labour but there's a bit more involved than just calmly talking into the microphone.
Those who do it properly move their body (including their hands) loads and it's a constant mix of tensing up for some lines and relaxing for others.
Recording spaces don't have air conditioning or fans where the microphones are (because, well, they're noisy...) so it can get warm after a while.
A bit miffed to see people treat VA work as 'easy'. Easier than heavy lifting for sure but there's a lot that goes on behind the scenes and even delivering lines itself takes energy and focus. Your hands move, your body moves, your head moves. Sometimes you tense up for a line and sometimes you relax for it.
Then again - I do admit it's great to get paid for seemingly just reading off a script
@Ryan_Again @Ulysses $250 for an hour of VO work leans on the low end of the scale. I would charge around that myself in pounds because I'm 'young' in the UK industry and don't have a large portfolio (and because it's hard to break into anyway plus I can pretty much only do a neutral accent)
@Tober that's also true - unless there were negotiations about it earlier then I don't see how videogame VAs expect to get paid royalties. I don't imagine that's a common scenario for all but the biggest videogame VAs - pure speculation here on my part.
@Ulysses true - think it's passed a million at least? Maybe there's more to the story - it's unusual for me to hear a VA voice concerns through social media
@steely_pete being quick means that she's good at understanding and getting what the voice director wants - and if she's good then getting paid more than entry level would be my personal opinion here
also consider that every vocal sound you hear Bayonetta make would need to have been recorded - so each grunt, huff puff, - I haven't done video game voice work but I've read that a lot of it also comprises sounds that don't qualify as speaking
@Tober $200 an hour for a big videogame franchise is honestly low. That's roughly entry level voiceover pay. https://globalvoiceacademy.com/gvaa-rate-guide-2/ - $200 an hour is the lowest end of the scale here.
@UltimateOtaku91 those lines take a lot of time to record, especially video game ones where you end up adding in lots of grunts and sound effects. The going rate for voice work can be around $300 for a minute or two of content (Which can take roughly an hour to record)
@fenlix didn't you read the article? It's truly optional. The comment about making the Link costume more revealing was probably about Bayonetta 2 cos I distinctly remember that happening then
The original Ouendan was better than Elite Beat Agents - I think largely due to the fact that wacky storylines for the songs were amped up with wacky visuals to match
@The-Chosen-one "Japanese have the best voice acting for anime style games" - I think it's because there are certain expressions and voice types that work well for that medium and aren't grating in Japanese. The delivery is also very different compared to English lines like the way dramatic lines are delivered.
I'm totally with you on games like this - Japanese VO with English subs.
@SteamEngenius Doesn't sound like it - sounds like a classic work case where you've got experiences outside of your core role that help you to know when you've got a good base to work with or a bad one. You don't have to work as a designer for years to know when something is wrong with a project
I'm surprised no one has mentioned that this is pretty standard in the creative industries (perhaps not many nlife readers from those industries?) in the context of promoting them - https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/JustForFun/XMeetsY.
Alien was VERY famously pitched as "Jaws in space".
@mikegamer I seriously doubt you'd avoid using the term 'theft' if you personally patented an invention (It costs tens of thousands or more depending on the scale of protection) and someone else 'pirated' it - there's a reason the standard industry term is 'IP theft' not 'IP piracy'. You may exclaim that someone 'stole' your idea - not exclaim that someone 'copied/pirated' your idea.
While the action is certainly copying something, the effect/result isn't. In fact, with IP theft, you'd suffer material loss through reduced profits/revenue from someone else using your idea before you. That's probably a bit easier to measure because you make estimates based on the monopoly you'd have on the patented invention versus the current state when others have 'pirated/copied' the invention
@Kevember I can't believe 8 people liked your comment. Reggie's a marketing person and those are standard buzzwords used almost daily at work. It's not just a marketing thing though as it's used on English-speaking offices around the world on a regular basis to the extent that they might be considered overused - which begs the question, why do you see it in such a negative light?
@-wc- The angle is even worse on some sites, particularly on seemingly copyright-hating Kotaku - though I think that might be due to residual frustration from when the post author wrote an article last year about how Metroid Dread was better on emulators than on the Switch and infamously had a line in the article saying, "Thank god for pirates, emulators, modders, and hackers".
@Kilroy my reply now is off-topic but - assuming you're talking about Sega hiring for Sonic there's a slight correction that might be needed. The developer spent a great time of time and effort pitching to Sega in an effort to get hired by them.
I notice some believe that Sega plucked him from relative obscurity just because of his fangames but that's not quite true.

@antisumo to be fair, it did cost $15 when it launched on Steam so this seems like a fair price for a new enhanced port
