Re: Rumour: Red Dead Redemption May Be Getting A Rubbish 'Code-In-A-Box' Release

@topsekret I respect that there are a few who want to keep a game indefinitely - a bit like holding on to NES cartridges and the NES to play it on until now - and physical games are seemingly quite essential to achieving that scenario.

I think a great deal of nuance is lost in the use of GKCs considering it's also paired with a fear of a digital-only future. There are strengths and there are weaknesses. Digital first advocates (of which I'm not) will not care as much about the weaknesses. My personal position is I will generally buy physical over digital unless the price was too good (Like Civ VI) or I know I'll probably never plan on selling on (like Mario Kart and Oddysey) or if it's a retro/classic game (like Marvel v Capcom).

For what it's worth, I think you had an idea of having them be installation cards, which is an interesting suggestion and probably only fails due to the overall cost of producing cards compared to a disc. I imagine if the cost difference was much closer then the idea would be far more viable. Don't think we're there yet.

@topsekret it's been almost 20 years and it's still open for redownloading. It was their first proper internet connected console.

For the Switch 2 game key cards to useless, the following needs to happen first in this order and probably without exception.

Wii > Wii U > Switch 1 > Switch 2.

I'm sure it'll be over 30 years before we're in any possible danger of losing access to redownload Switch 2 games. The fear of Nintendo servers closing even for downloads is wildly and ridiculously overblown. It's NEVER happened yet and still ppl are talking as if it'll happen in the next 5 to 10 years. Internet and reddit-fuelled irrational fear based largely or solely on eshop closure for purchases. In another post someone else already recently made the mistake of confusing the two scenarios.

@EVIL-C and yet you can STILL redownload games you've already purchased on Nintendo consoles. To date, Nintendo has not stopped that service (and it's been almost 20 years since the Wii launched).

You're confusing eshop closure for new purchases with losing the ability to redownload games. My 30+ years comes from knowing that:
1. Wii redownloads are still possible nearly 20 years later.

2. Any closures for even redownloading games will follow this sequence without exception - Wii > Wii U > Switch > Switch 2.

3. Server technologies and management would have improved in the past 2 decades and so would have Nintendo's maintenance and support team and processes. Remember, the Wii was their first proper internet enabled console (even allowing for things like the DSi).

It could theoretically be faster than 30 years, but based on the above, that's highly unlikely

This will probably be a game key card release but I'm happy that it means previous Cloud games can launch properly on the Switch 2.

I'm not looking forward to all the inevitable, unreasonable comments around pricing - "it was released free on Epic Games and Amazon Prime Gaming - so I'm not paying more than £5 (insert other low number here) for the Switch 2 version" - or "that's terrible pricing for an 5 year old game - it's on sale now for £8.24 so it should launch at £10" because people think ports are easy/free/copy pasta jobs
