@topsekret Interesting! Thanks for confirming! I like there there's a Switch 2 upgrade path for a relatively low price. I dislike that there's no Switch 2 version of the game that I can rent or buy and sell later.
@Kiyata it's always amusing to see the lazy 'Nintendo defender' comments. They also usually come from those with bad faith arguments and trying to oversimplify or over exaggerate certain things. Like thinking your purchasing habits and behaviours are in any way indicative of the market. They aren't. Neither are my purchasing habits or behaviours for that matter.
On too many occasions to count, being reasonable is seen as defending Nintendo.
@Thecure thank you for clarifying. A quick search shows that it roughly equates to $73usd, which seems on par with several of the $69.99 games in the US. I have read that Canadian prices trend higher since they tend to go through the US - which kinda sucks for Canadians
@Thecure perhaps I am. Perhaps I am. But I'm not the one giving incomplete information. If you wish to engage properly, then share where you're seeing the price you've quoted
@Thecure joined just to post this? I suppose there are worse reasons to start a new account on a gaming site. I'm not in the US but I'm clearly referring to USD. If I meant Aussie or Canadian dollars I would've specified AUD or CAD respectively.
@Lucius6 yeah. They're not even revising sales expectations. Just managing inventory differently since their previous strategy was to effectively oversupply the market. Someone else in another forum theorised that this move was probably due to inventory costs of storage etc
@ElkinFencer10 that's a really really small selection of titles at $80 and aren't all of those Switch 2 Editions with cheaper upgrade paths that are very easily accessible to everyone? It's not like you can't get the experience if you don't spend $80
@wishmylove I thought Lord's summary was meant as satire or a joke given that the first 2 bullet points are unheard of in the video game industry. Since when is a new console expected to get a revision in under 9 months (thereby 'punishing' early adopters) and complaining about lack of limited edition consoles again in under 9 months?
Saw this comment on Nintendo everything and it seems relevant: Bloomberg’s article clearly states that no sales expectations are being changed and this is a shift in inventory management.
@Cry_Zero portability. Playing in bed. Playing on the couch while someone else watches the TV. Sometimes good enough is in fact, good enough. Not everyone chases pixels or frame rates - I've got a gaming PC which doubles as a work PC so usually I'd rather not continue sitting at my desk at the end of work.
@UltimateOtaku91 here's where I find anti consumer claims are largely about positioning and phrasing. It doesn't take much writing skill to position anything that makes a company money to be anti consumer behaviour.
@-wc- unlikely I think. The context you're referring to and the context of those types of statements are very different. I think the 99 cents to get Mario to jump higher is a wildly misplaced business thought and a great example of short term thinking of some investors.
To flip what you've said though, I've had a theory that some here would proclaim that splitting Pokémon into 2 same games with different catch rates is 'anti consumer' because you 'need' both games to catch all the mon in that gen and it's a style that doesn't cater for those who are purely solo gamers.
"unfortunately, I have to go through the trouble of buying a Nintendo device to access Mario" - also a typical line from resolution and frame rate junkies
@GamerGrandpa My number 1 favourite Wii game was Pro Evolution Soccer - the Wii gameplay with the pointer controls was unmatched in my opinion. There's never been another football game since then which such a level of control over your team.
@Ganon821 Until PC game storefronts start doing that seriously then there's no chance of consoles following suit. I vaguely recall a storefront that trialled a solution to resell digital games I think over a decade ago but it never got any traction.
@Duncanballs Case in point for me - even if I still had floppy disks to play Moon Bugs, Moon Patrol, Alley Cat, Digger, and other classics from my youth, there's a high chance the data in the disks has degraded/corrupted over time and/or it'll definitely cost me a lot more money than it's worth to get a floppy disk reader that'll work with Windows 10
@Kierant202 yeah. Given that the average gamer is 40+ years old - I seriously doubt any in that group are rushing to play their old games in 30, 40 years time. Even then, Nintendo's servers will likely still be up for redownloading after 30+ years (It's been almost 20 years and the Wii is still up for redownloading)
@steizgr8 Nintendo weren't the ones to release fully digital consoles that couldn't accept any physical media.
@MamaSymphonia I haven't gotten the game yet but this is exactly the type of things I prefer seeing in game discussions. As a PC gamer as well who's assembled my own setups, I've intimately acquainted with performance and comparison charts and they have their place - but I'd much rather discuss games rather than frames.
@Duncanballs long gone are the days where game discussions primarily focused on aspects of the game like the gameplay, the art style, the characters, the graphics etc. Now it's dominated by frame rates and game formats like GKCs.
Still hooked on TMNT Splintered Fate. It's huge fun to go on short runs and the different character personalities really shine through. Also dabbling back into a couple of hyper old PC games from my childhood, Sword of Aragon and the Phantasie series. I also studied a chess opening sideline further since I play competitively.
@arkanjo29 coming into this late. Your argument is bizarre given that you're advocating for a product that launched in 2024 at nearly double the price of the Switch 2
@dew12333 "Or you and the few others are just wrong maybe" sales evidence shows differently. The public aren't rejecting game key cards and game key card prices haven't crashed - only one of those games has dropped to under £16 at retail
Based on the success of this game where people are also buying a switch 2 for it I think it's fair to say some of the negative reactions to the Nintendo Direct that featured it was a bit OTT.
@fenlix they didn't patent that specifically and it's not as simple as that. There's a whole detailed process they patented. Infringing on it requires the infringer to copy every part, not just one component
@CaptainQuo I've only ever seen two positions against GKCs here. One group who won't buy the game at all and another, less easy to understand group, who won't buy GKCs but will get the digital version in protest.
Fears about Nintendo servers closing are incredibly overblown and wildly inaccurate. I estimate 30 to 35 years (probably more actually) before the Switch servers are completely unavailable to even redownload games. To date, Nintendo has not shut down servers for redownloading any game - this goes back some 20 years.
In the 30++ years before the servers for Switch and Switch 2 games shut, it's relatively more likely for physical media to fail and definitely more likely they get lost, damaged, etc.
Those fearing server closure need to remember that they'll only happen in this order : Wii (not happened yet) > Wii U (also not happened yet) > Switch 1 > Switch 2
@Znake You've had reasonable explanations from Dash but it's clear you don't want to listen to reason from others here who disagree with you or from actual developers. It's also clear that some of what you've proposed is either unachievable or impractical from a production and development standpoint.
Edit: Gosh - notice you've mentioned you're a developer of 35 years experience. So, it's even more bizarre that you completely reject what other developers have said about game key cards and dismissed them as corporate lies.
@tkdboy1889 I swear the large majority who prefer digital over key cards are cutting off their noses to spite their faces. I kinda understand protesting by not purchasing at all or buying digital for the convenience but it's perplexing if it's a protest by buying digital instead of a game key card.
Meanwhile, I'm very thankful we have wider access to games on the Switch 2 largely thanks to game key cards in my opinion. We longer get saddled with cloud versions which are even worse than code in box releases.
@Mando44646 It's such a pity about the licensing problems with getting a Switch 2 port of BG3. It'll be one of the few ports where you'll get fewer online comments complaining about the launch price of a port since it's never been deeply discounted (unless you use a VPN and take advantage of currency differences but that's a whole different kettle of fish)
@Res462 You've gone round in circles to try to prove your point. I sincerely don't understand why you're ignoring the statement so I'll use capitals to note the key words. "We currently have no plans to use game-key cards for Nintendo-DEVELOPED titles" - This title WASN'T DEVELOPED by Nintendo (think that's been pointed out to you earlier too).
About game discussions, long before game key cards, we used to have a world where gamers would discuss previews or reviews and whether it looked fun for them (or not) or talk about aspects of the game. A game doesn't have to be released for those discussions to happen.
