Re: Random: Here's Why Nintendo Doesn’t Want You Using The Word "Nintendo" To Describe Video Games

@Kirgo There are many cases throughout history (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_generic_and_genericized_trademarks), I've already shown you the escalator example where a company lost the trademark over the name.

It's not common largely because of what companies like Nintendo do to protect their trademark. They take it very seriously because the consequences are irreversible (As in the brand value of the trademark becomes pretty much zero)

I've seen almost identical messaging over the years from other companies for products like Rollerblade (They used to put out terse messaging in ads during the 90s telling everyone to stop using Rollerblading as a verb) and Xerox

Edit: To be fair, unless you've studied or are studying marketing/business, you're unlikely to know when companies lose a trademark - simply because it's used so often as part of regular speech. I mean, when I did marketing I was surprised to learn of words that used to be registered trademarks. Funny you should mention Jacuzzi though as that's still an active trademark - thanks largely to Jacuzzi's efforts to get everyone to use the term hot tub instead of Jacuzzi.

@Kirgo Did it happen before? Yes, many times throughout modern history. Escalator is probably the most famous example that transcends international cultures. https://www.consumerreports.org/consumerist/15-product-trademarks-that-have-become-victims-of-genericization/#:~:text=Aspirin%3A%20Formally%20known%20as%20acetylsalicylic,German%20name%20for%20salicylic%20acid.

@boxyguy Large companies have ALWAYS been careful about possibly losing their trademarks. This is nothing new. I learnt this stuff over two decades ago.

@Octane_st1m I thought more Malaysians started paying attention to E3 like about a decade or more ago? I'm reasonably certain local Nintendo fan circles talked about it

Re: E3 2022 Is Officially Cancelled

jsty3105

@Giancarlothomaz To be fair, you saw a bit more of BotW 2 even before E3 2022 - only thing was, it was slightly extended footage as part of an announcement about a delay till 2023.

So, we're probably unlikely to get more footage until Q4 2022.

Remember when people (and some sections of the gaming press) loudly claimed that Nintendo had given up on E3 with it's Nintendo Directs? Nintendo were ahead of the curve.

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Of Valve's Steam Deck Are In - What's It Like Compared To Switch?

jsty3105

@Yorumi oh I don't mean it as a criticism of your previous comment. I posted it as I didn't factor in that updates will also take up a significant portion of storage.

I'm still interested in the Stream Deck but this discovery does temper my expectations somewhat. Notably, I'm primarily interested in the Steam Deck for the possibility of playing the big releases on the go. Knowing that I can only hold a few before needing multiple SD cards isn't great for me

@Ultimapunch "It’s that they seem to have overt contempt for any and all actions to preserve their past titles."

Usually because those attempts involve keeping them in a playable form in a publicly accessible website where people probably don't have to pay any fee to experience a particular title.

Alternatively, keeping them in a downloadable form in a publicly accessible website where people may or may not need to pay to download that experience for themselves.

Re: 'Switch Pro' Trends On Social Media After Massive Nvidia Leak Reignites Speculation

jsty3105

@Dirty0814 I agree. I LOVED the concept and the system. I think Nintendo's hands have been well burnt by the reception - and, crucially, the tech crowd never warmed to asymmetric gaming or the other good parts of the Wii U. A revisit to the same dual screen concept would need something majorly good to avoid significant bad press.

I preferred playing Mass Effect 3 on the Wii U because the gamepad offered tactical options that was not possible anywhere else including the PC. I could direct flanking manoeuvres! Pikmin 3 was a delight to play as an RTS with the gamepad set as a second screen and using the Wii remote + nunchuck as the primary control setup.

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Of Valve's Steam Deck Are In - What's It Like Compared To Switch?

jsty3105

@Yorumi I hope compatibility improves.

I'm personally interested in one for the future but need a price drop first because, realistically speaking, only the 256 or 512GB versions are really worth getting due to the mega large install sizes of games.

For example, the base model doesn't seem capable of playing Borderlands 3 without a giant micro SD card.

Reading some reviews, just because a game can run on Steam Deck doesn't mean that it runs well (Tiny text on Borderlands 3 for example and I saw someone comment earlier that Hades runs better on the Switch).

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Of Valve's Steam Deck Are In - What's It Like Compared To Switch?

jsty3105

@Zenszulu "...even the lowest spec model which isn't much more expensive than the OLED Switch probably won't sell as much as some seem to think..."

It definitely didn't sell as much as the most expensive model - "the most expensive version ($649.99 with 512GB of storage) is the most popular"
https://www.gamesradar.com/the-most-expensive-steam-deck-is-the-most-popular-and-its-changing-how-valve-thinks-about-steam-deck-2/

I guess this doubles down on the viewpoint of some that the Steam Deck is primarily for the (smaller) enthusiast market.

@diwdiws shrug https://www.windowscentral.com/why-you-shouldnt-install-windows-steam-deck

Also: Valve recommends not wiping SteamOS for Windows — naturally — but designer Lawrence Yang told IGN that it was possible.

"We don't think people should be locked into a certain direction or a certain set of software that they can install. If you buy a Steam Deck, it's a PC. You can install whatever you want on it, you can attach any peripherals you want to it. Maybe a better way to think about it is that it's a small PC with a controller attached as opposed to a gaming console."

What you would lose by installing Windows is all of the UI optimizations that Valve has designed with SteamOS to make it a good experience on a handheld. But you're going to be free to do as you wish with it. With 16GB of RAM onboard and a custom quad-core AMD APU, it'll certainly have enough horsepower for Windows.
