@Synecdoche unfortunately, yeah. I think he's right. There needs to be more examples to prove that turn-based strategy RPGs without big budget animations or characters are viable (as in, you can reasonably sell enough at the right price to turn a decent profit within the first month).
@Fazermint You're oversimplifying that increased sales automatically means increased profits. Revenue of course contributes to the profit margin but there are so many things at play (plus profit margins and profits are different things). I also fundamentally believe that deep discounting and race to the bottom pricing is more harmful than good though that's not the main topic here.
Ultimately, you have a vastly different position and I don't find it useful to quibble over whether sales leads to profits when the key item is something quite different. I'm not saying you're really wrong after all.
@Azileron I'm frankly shocked and disappointed at the number of comments claiming blackmail etc (then again, we're living in an age where outrage has been pretty normalised). Squeenix chose to spend money on developing and launching this title - it's perfectly natural business to use it as a way to test interest in future titles and they gave clear reasons why they chose this instead of others.
Whether you're personally interested in this title or not, the basic truth remains. If we want to see more titles, it's much much more likely to happen if this particular one sells well. Of course, there are many different ways to finance titles - seems like Square Enix may fund future title development from the sales of this one.
@Fazermint Sales increase revenue, not necessarily profit. The other important calculation is Cost of Goods Sold. It's way too simplistic to assume that increased sales always lead to increased profits.
@SurprisedRobinChu "As some readers have pointed out, videos claiming to show docked Switch 2 gameplay are also online, which suggest that docked performance may be better than described in the preview above"
@Medic_alert a bit naive I'm afraid. Roadmaps are good and tell customers when they can expect things and what the product vision is for the post launch.
@1UP_MARIO the competition raised prices twice in Japan already and you're worried about them not being competitive enough to keep Nintendo's prices low? 😀
Lots of commentators here who constantly complain about the Switch 2's power should be incredibly excited about this. Presumably it should have an OLED 120hz VRR screen, be at least as powerful as a PS5 and play those games at the same visual quality with no performance comprises, be the same size with more battery life, and cost less than £400
@Wewewi got a gaming pc and a switch 2. I don't have time to do much gaming on my pc so the Switch 2 tends to be my main unit since I can play that anywhere I want
@Serpenterror "I had a feeling 40% of those were either scalpers that can't even resold the system or are people who got their Switch 2 brick only to rebuy another one." that's what some said for the first few million sold too. 🤷🏻♂️ Think they'll continue to say it even after the 10M mark
@Hisui25002 they want an Asus ROG Xbox Ally X beater that costs less than £400 🤷🏻♂️. Not sure how that'll ever be achieved with current technology, materials, and processes
Pity there are no options that do everything the switch 2 pro controller does at a cheaper price. I'll accept the lack of a feature to wake up the console but want that refined rumble, NFC for amiibos, and similar battery life
@DrakeFeathers now take that same fear, multiply it in terms of potential financial and reputation losses and look at it from a business point of view.
Shockingly, the Nintendo sub Reddit has more sensible responses - all saying this isn't news. It's Japanese law, particularly when it comes to streaming, and it's been that way for years. Doing it for charity doesn't mean laws get ignored or glossed over.
There's also of course a massive culture gap between the West and Japan around this anyway which means comments already come from a more Western angle (Freedom!!!).
@swoose 1. fast-tracked permission for this event, 2. gave notice further in advance, 3. waived permission this time with an understanding of what to do in the future, 4. ignored it entirely as with every year before.
#2 is not Nintendo's responsibility. That's on the organiser. A charitable event isn't a magic word that automatically gets approved.
The answer to the other points is already more than adequately covered by @HeadPirate
@SurprisedRobinChu but they didn't brick the system. Brick means you can't even turn it on or use it. It was a console ban that was acknowledged to be a mistake and then rectified by Nintendo customer service.
I reiterate, Nintendo have never bricked a system.
Not sure why you think NintendoLife might be avoiding negative coverage - a couple of weeks or so ago (maybe more), there were lots of unfounded accusations that NintendoLife was drumming up controversial topics that had a negative Nintendo-slant
Edit: Was really interesting to realise that the story wasn't covered here. Then again, it's the type of story that, to me, just spreads misinformation rather than be a good story. I've written a few pieces for magazine cover stories so perhaps have different priorities when it comes to articles.
@The_Nintend_Pedant there's no virtually bricked status though. Either something is bricked or it isn't. There's no in-between state. Everything that doesn't requite online functionality still works - so every Nintendo first party game works. Every fully physical release still works. I think even the MIG still works.
@SurprisedRobinChu slight correction, Nintendo have never bricked a system for any reason. They've only banned consoles from accessing any online services when Terms and Conditions have been broken, usually by having illegitimate backups
@The_Nintend_Pedant I totally understand the argument about value Vs cost. I just think it's reductive and pointless for m to base value on hours to finish the main game. That's partly how we ended up with so much bloat in modern games.
Edit: Also, there are zero games where the main game takes 100 hours to complete and there's not much info yet on how long it could take to 100% DK but it's definitely longer than 36 hours based on this review
@The_Nintend_Pedant I chose Pineapple quite deliberately 😁. He was waffling about hours of gameplay for a review and comparing against completionist hours in other games. There are several 100 hour games you can complete in 20-30 hours. What's missing from his reductive diss is the measure of fun and replay ability ☺️
@YunoboCo "How is my negative comment less constructive than other people’s positive comment?" Criticism is energy zapping and, non-toxic workplaces will always reinforce that criticism needs to be constructive because it's pretty useless otherwise.
@ICISAZEL Possibly - at this stage, the 'They' doesn't seem to include Nintendo since they've committed to fully physical releases though they reserve the right to change their mind later. Nintendo has long maintained a pricing strategy of 33% discount as a max (for over a decade I think) - I have no concerns about that number dropping lower.
My view of the current state of the gaming industry is that it is unsustainable with an over-reliance on mega hits supplemented by race-to-the-bottom pricing strategies to mop up whatever leftover revenue they can get.
They are a few outliers like the developer of Factoria and some publishers like Koei Tecmo who never discounts certain franchises by more than 50%.
@MamaSymphonia it's completely unsurprising for the Switch 1 version of totk to outsell the Switch 2 version because that's the cheapest upgrade path. Buy the Switch 1 version, then buy the upgrade pack. Cheaper than buying the Switch 2 version outright
@LoneWolfSones Ho hum - another one who doesn't put any responsibility on the people getting their consoles banned and knowingly reselling / getting refunds with no consequences.
The issue is also with the MIG card, not fake SD cards. Fake SD cards will just be much lower capacity than advertised or fail far more easily. There also aren't any pirated Switch 2 game cards at all so it's not even worth bringing it up.
As for the reports of 3rd party docks not working - you've very quickly forgotten that the Switch 1 had public cases where 3rd party docks were bricking other people's Switches.
Several of those reported Switch 2 docks are also working now after a firmware update so nothing to get angry about either or, as it's popular to, accuse Nintendo of being 'greedy'
@ICISAZEL ah that's good. It's current averaging at £65 in terms of retail pricing. Some got the European version for the around £45 from Amazon France recently
@SirPrimalform no Nintendo console has ever been bricked by Nintendo. Bricked consoles have overwhelmingly been a user error when trying to hack the system (or hack through the MIG or something like it) or through faulty electronics. My switch 1 got bricked when I plugged into a faulty charging port.
In answer to who owns the hardware, you kinda do but Nintendo and every other console maker can stop you from installing chests and hacks to protect themselves and other gamers. So they can and should stop you from accessing their servers.
I didn't know the Switch 1 has been removed from sale and has stopped being supported. Can you share the news? I'd have thought it would've been major news but guess I missed it.
@RejectedAng3L they may have money, sure, but one of the quickest ways to end up with a lot less money is to waste it. These costs quickly run into the tens of thousands each year. There's also the employee time cost and opportunity cost since the employees could be working on creating new features instead of wasting time maintaining servers that maybe a handful of ppl use each year.
If you like the idea of spending that much time and money for no gain then I echo @jacket_p about the public sector 😏
@Rockcabinet there's no bricking happening. Amusingly, much of what you've said has been said before (at least thematically), back in 2009 when Microsoft did a wave of console bans.

Re: Square Enix Confirms Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade Runs At A "Stable" 30fps On Switch 2
@AllBLK it's a mass market handheld pitted against home consoles. Of course it'll have compromises. Even the new Asus Rog Xbox Ally X has compromises.
Re: Square Enix Confirms Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade Runs At A "Stable" 30fps On Switch 2
@Wewewi since my pc isn't portable I'd gladly buy Switch 2 games, would consider decent ports, especially time hungry RPGs.
Ports are only shunned by more vocal ppl online. Normal people buy them.

@SurprisedRobinChu Another slight correction. The account ban that was done in error by Nintendo was reversed after he contacted customers service, not after media publicity. It had nothing to do with the name.
