Re: Talking Point: Does Nintendo's Next Console Have To Be 'Another' Switch?

iLikeUrAttitude

At this point I would be surprised if Nintendo didn't stick with the Switch formula, they obviously struck gold and I would think anyone with common sense would just keep the ball rolling.

If you think about it most console successors are just more powerful versions of their predecessors, even Nintendo.
Every Xbox and Playstation console has been an upgrade in power only (not that theres anything wrong with that).
Nintendo also follows this trend for the most part, I don't get why people keep bringing the Gamecube to Wii example when it's basically the exception.

  • NES > SNES -Direct upgrade, no gimmicks
  • SNES > N64 - Direct upgrade, no gimmicks
  • N64 > Gamecube - Direct upgrade, unless you want to count the handle and small disks lol
  • Gamecube > Wii - Gimmick and complete change
  • Wii > Wii U - Direct upgrade with the gimmick being the pad arguably

Now if you look at the handhelds all of them are just stronger versions of each other from the gameboy titles, gameboy advance, the DS line and the 3ds line.

So it's a very high chance that the next console will be a successor to the Switch probably as strong as a PS4 if we're being realistic, anyone thinking we'll get anywhere near 4k is delusional.

Didn't get anything new on Switch at least but I recently been playing Flash Party with friends, it's really fun.
It's a somewhat 2D platformer that recently released on steam, it's free to play and easy to get into so it's easy for me to recommend to people.

Aside from that I'm playing the usual smash, thems fightin herds with the occasional dead by daylight with friends.

Overall the buffs and nerfs were good.
But it's still ridiculous how crab tank basically got off scott free, it's just a 1 second nerf to it's duration which now can be mitigated easily still with special power up.
Not to mention it's hp is still very much overtuned.
Splash o matic wasn't touched either despite it being the definitive best special in the game no extra cost for it's special nor any changes to the main weapon.

Re: Feature: Fire Emblem Narratives, Ranked – Which Fire Emblem Has The Best Story?

Well I can't contribute much to this subject seeing as I only played and finished Awakening, but it's story was very basic and mediocre with a bunch of throwaway characters that weren't relevant aside from Chrom, Lucina and Robin.

I'm guessing it's that high because of it's popularity.
From my experience people aren't that likely to play the older games and will just prefer to experience the most recent releases.

Re: Talking Point: So, When Will Nintendo Announce Its Next Console?

@Bizzyb Do you not see the point I'm trying to explain to you?
It doesn't matter whether or not Wii U was long dead before the Switch's release, the primarily point is that consoles have had years of buildup in the minimum, and more when the console is officially revealed up to it's release.

If the Wii U example doesn't hold much water to you then you could've easily looked at the other examples with the previous console, which again, were provided by you by @Seacliff and also repeated to you by me which you seem to be consistently disregarding for some reason.

You're making an assumption that for this delay in particular is related to new hardware releasing in the first place despite you not having any evidence that is the case.
It isn't a false equivalency until you can prove that these delays are in correlation with new hardware, which you can't.
Quit projecting.

Re: Talking Point: So, When Will Nintendo Announce Its Next Console?

@Bizzyb

Thats ignorant to say, I know full well you aren't familiar with game development works or the full scope of it (Neither am I but I'm not claiming or implying that I do).
A games developments takes as long as it needs to.

You're missing the point, I'm saying game delays aren't anything new with Nintendo or even the industry as a whole, which you were using as an argument to new hardware which was a false correlation.

Yet even with a dead console we knew we were getting the NX for years and when it was finally revealed it took months for it to release, yet you think it's plausible that we're getting a new console to release out of the blue despite no buildup whatsoever.
You also ignored the other examples @Seacliff provided you:

Seacliff wrote:

As for hardware, Nintendo tends to publically announce the project titles of their hardware about two years before they actually release. We knew about the Switch as "NX" since June 2015, the Wii U as "Project Cafe" since early 2011, the Wii as "Revolution" since 2004, etc.

The way I see it the only "apples and orange" comparison I see is you trying to equate TotK to a new successor.

Maybe with games but as many have pointed out announcing new hardware after the holiday season (aka the strongest sales period for a console) only to release early next year also makes no sense.
Furthermore consoles never release without buildup.

When we actually get hints from official and actually credible sources I'll assume we won't get any new hardware and will be ignoring your headcanon, along with a bunch of other fans here.

Re: Talking Point: So, When Will Nintendo Announce Its Next Console?

@Bizzyb

You could easily equate the delays to them wanting to polish their product as much as possible, this happens all the time especially with Nintendo. Splatoon 3, Animal Crossing, were delayed and Metroid Prime 4 restarted development.

That is a false equivalency, just because X happened doesn't mean it's going to lead to Y and Z.
A game being delayed isn't going to confirm new hardware.

Even then it makes no sense to announce a console out of the blue with no buildup.
The Switch for example was revealed October 2016, then had a dedicated presentation 3 months later and then finally released 2 months after said presentation.

Probably because them, as a business, aren't planning to release new hardware anytime soon and instead are focusing on their current console which still has a high attach rate and is still selling well?
Also the release of new hardware doesn't mean a company won't still support their old one.
Even when the 3DS launched the DS still got Pokemon Black and White 2 for example.
The PS4 still got God of War Ragnarök despite the PS5 being out for over 2 years.

Until Nintendo themselves states that they plan on making new hardware I have no reason to believe that we're getting any news of a Switch successor this year.
Because as we currently stand there are no such implications that aren't coming from fans setting themselves up for disappointment.

Yeah respectfully, that's just your pure headcanon, theres nothing in the realm of reality thats even implying that TotK will launch alongside new hardware let alone new hardware being announced this year.

Re: Talking Point: So, When Will Nintendo Announce Its Next Console?

It makes absolutely no sense to even announce new hardware at this current year, let alone release it.
People here seem to be basing their conclusions on their personal bias' and want for a new console rather than actually taking the time to critically think.
There are too many major factors to give Nintendo any good reason to release new hardware currently.
Three major ones are the chip shortage still being a global issue and the Switch still selling as if it was brand new.
And thirdly Nintendo literally stated themselves they plan to support the Switch longer than the average console lifespan and reiterated time and time again that it's in the middle of it's lifecycle, even as early as last year.
People don't seem to be applying these factors at all for some reason, it should be common sense.

The earliest I think we'll see of any new hardware in my opinion would be an announcement in late 2024, probably around the same time the switch was first revealed, and an official launch in 2025.
I just hope I don't get a bunch of articles, rumors and speculation videos shoved down my throat for the rest of the year..

Re: Soapbox: If You Thought Last Year Was "Sad" For Switch, 2023 Might Be Hard To Handle

iLikeUrAttitude

@Bolt_Strike Sure every game has at least one "big" game in it either at the beginning or end. But people act as if a year is bad if it doesn't have any of the "big 3" (mario, zelda, pokemon) which isn't true, it's all a matter of preference.

If we're going by your metric then 2022 was an amazing year for the Switch since we had a bunch of 10 million+ selling games as pointed out by multiple people (Splatoon 3, Pokemon Arceus, Pokemon Scarlet Violet etc.).

I won't be surprised about people complaining about this subject, but I could care less since people will always complain.

Re: Soapbox: If You Thought Last Year Was "Sad" For Switch, 2023 Might Be Hard To Handle

I couldn't agree more with this article, people that say this was a bad year for Switch need to learn that not everything has to personally cater to them and you can have a good year without Mario, Zelda or Pokemon.

As someone who will probably never touch Pokemon again I can still acknowledge they add to this year because I recognize that they are still "big" games loved by many, same with Kirby, I don't like that series either but the game was still well received by those who did and gave this year more variety.

There were many releases this year and while not all of them will cater to me obviously I can still recognize that this year was mostly filled with quality games.

Re: Japanese Charts: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Surpasses 5 Million Sales

@Serpenterror Well that's a baseless assumption on your part due to your heavy bias towards turn base games showing, there are obviously multiple factors to why this game didn't sell as well.
Lack of advertisements and release timing easily could've played a party in this.
Well the monsters series is more popular and less niche than the musou genre so naturally it will sell well.

This seemed less about you trying to be objective on why the game sold less desirably and moreso you personally not liking the direction it turned out in and it heavily shows that.

Square Enix is to blame for this, instead of making it a turn based RPG like all DQ games were suppose to be, they turn it into another action crap Kingdom Hearts garbage. The Enix players doesn't want the same experience as the Square players, these idiots continues to ruin more IPs just like they ruin the SaGa, Mana, Valkyrie, Star Ocean, and Final Fantasy series. Had Dragon Quest Treasures was a true turn based RPG, the DQ fanbase would buy into it more.

This is the most melodramatic post I ever seen in a while.
My guy spinoffs are called spinoffs for a reason, they're supposed to differentiate themselves from their respective mainline series. If you want to play turn based games so bad the mainline games are right there, heck spinoffs like DQ Monsters have turn based comeback too.
Tell me did you have this same reaction when DQ Heroes and DQ Builders were revealed?

The concept of spinoffs don't damage or influence the main series in anyway the main series in anyway, DQ is still going to be turn based, what you just did was basically throw a temper tantrum over something existing and was extremely childish of you.

@Savage_Joe Sure I could give you the other two I mentioned but Power Rangers probably not, not to mention MK11 was already mentioned by you and that has rollback netcode as well.

Smash style games require a lot of guesswork from the server to make a successful prediction or “rollback” to the actual input if it predicted wrong.

Yeah... that's how rollback works in general...

That takes resources, and it has to be done frame by frame. That effort multiplies when more players are involved. Will the switch really handle that when it can barely do it on a 1v1 in MK11?

Yes if fans on a much smaller scale can implement rollback from passion then a dev team working under the resources of a billion dollar company can certainly do the same.
Everything requires resources, simply pointing that out especially in the context of a company that has plenty adds nothing to the discussion and is a statement with no substance. It's basically the equivalent of saying: "tHAtS gOinG tO TAkE a LoT oF woRk", well no duh.

Or how about this, have you wondered why doesn’t Smash Ultimate has it, even after people asked Sakurai about it multiple times?

Well for starters Nintendo or Sakurai don't really care what the fans are complaining about and don't really listen to feedback so that's a moot point from the get go.
Second of all just because it hasn't been implemented doesn't mean it shouldn't.
Third you can't just jump to a conclusion to a question that has multiple variables behind it, thats a disingenuous assumption that can't be backed up for sure at the most all we can do is make educated assumptions and speculate.

From what I see here are probably the reasons on why smash doesn't have rollback:

  • Rollback wasn't becoming the standard for fighting games as it is today now
  • Delay based saves a lot more money and regardless of whether they implemented rollback or not the game was going to sell well regardless
  • Nintendo isn't good with online and thats been proven time and time again with all of their 1st party multiplayer games so they didn't bother

For the record I'm not saying Smash Ultimate needs to have it's online reworked now, thats obviously going to take a lot more work than it's worth especially when it's already a huge success from a financial standpoint.
But when the next iteration of the Switch is released and we inevitably get Smash 6, and there is still no rollback netcode? Nintendo has no excuses by then.

Re: Feature: Nintendo Switch Ports We'd Love To See In 2023

iLikeUrAttitude

@Savage_Joe It's not "theoretically" it's been seen in practice through multiple examples on the Switch.
In what world is rollback demanding on the hardware on the switch let alone any system that isn't a potato?
You have fan games running rollback with melee on even weaker hardware on the Switch.
There are multiple modern fighting games that run well that also have rollback - Thems Fightin Herds, Skullgirls, Power Rangers just to name a few.
That MK11 and Capcom Fighting Collection example you gave didn't make much sense seeing as how they require reflexes attune to any other game in it's genre and it's way more demanding than Multiversus, if a game like MK11 can run on the switch with rollback then multiversus has no excuse, the devs just didn't feel like putting it on the switch.

Just because one dev team struggled to put it on Switch doesn't mean it's hard to put it on switch in general.
There are many variations of rollback - Capcom's rollback for example is notoriously bad - whether it runs competently or not is the fault of the developers, not the console itself.

Re: Feature: Nintendo Switch Ports We'd Love To See In 2023

iLikeUrAttitude

@Savage_Joe So basically they kept out the Switch version because they didn't feel like bothering as usual.
For the record rollback isn't demanding by any means multiple games have rollback and crossplay on the Switch it's just a matter of whether or not the developers feel like implementing it.

Re: Video: What Were Your Top Five Switch Games Of 2022?

iLikeUrAttitude

Didn't get that many games that released this year but from what I did here is how I would rank them:

1. Xenoblade 3
2. Them's Fightin Herds
3. Monster Hunter Sunbreak
4. Splatoon 3

Despite Xenoblade 3 being the least played out of the 4 it's experience in it's "little" time left more of an impact on me in the last few years. I truly haven't gotten that emotional over a video game since XC2.
Them's Fightin Herds is just an amazing fighting overall for entry level players and fans of the genre, it has interesting lore, characters, a unique cast, an underrated soundtrack, an amazing lobby system, roll back netcode AND crossplay.
Sunbreak is a great expansion to the point where it could be it's own game but unfortunately I haven't finished it yet, when I do it'll probably rank higher though since I loved rise as well.
Splatoon 3 is at the bottom because of it's garbage online.

Honorable Mention for games that I got this year but didn't release this year:

  • Dead By Daylight - Really fun survival game especially with friends, with a noticeable skill ceiling.

Re: Feature: Nintendo Switch Ports We'd Love To See In 2023

It's probably never going to happen at this point but I still hope that Xenoblade X somehow gets ported.

As for more realistic ports on my wishlist:

  • Multiversus - Doesn't seem to be that demanding and it looks entirely feasible to port to Switch.
  • Divine Knockout - Hi Rez's new game which is a 3D Platform fighter - first of it's kind, I watched my friends play it and it looks really fun.
  • The Remaining Disgaea games, they already ported 5, 4 & 1 as well as giving us Disgaea 6 and upcoming Disgaea 7, I don't see why they shouldn't port the last games being 2 and 3.
It would be nice to be able to play all the Disgaea games on a single platform.

Re: Rumour: Switch Pro Was Real But Got Cancelled, Claims Digital Foundry

@Smug43 You're overcomplicating things very much, if every company had this much paranoia for releasing new hardware then we would still be stuck in the NES days.
Every console successor is basically just a more powerful version of their predecessor if you think about it, especially the traditional consoles like Xbox and Playstation.
The only company exempt from this is Nintendo but even then they still follow this rule to a degree.

  • NES from SNES was a simple step forward, just a more powerful successor
  • N64 to Gamecube same concept
  • Almost every Nintendo handheld did this as well, sometimes giving you even less of a reason to 'upgrade' like with the gameboy color.

I imagine this'll be a DS to 3DS scenario, as in the previous console will set up the foundation for future iterations to come like how the DS set up the clamshell design for a decade even following through with the 3ds line up.
The "Switch 2" will probably just be a significantly more powerful switch with backwards compatibility and just adding more onto the foundation that has already been set like with the 3ds to the ds.
