Happy New Year's Eve good reader! Congratulations! You've almost made it through 2022 and we think it is fair to say that we have had some good gaming to show for it.

Here at Nintendo Life, we have spent the week looking back over the past year with fondness, re-reading some of our favourite pieces from 2022 and putting them out there for you lovely lot to see. We have also hosted the Alternative Game Awards, laid down some Switch ports that we'd love to see in 2023, and gushed over some of our favourite games from the past year that fell just short or came very late into the GOTY conversation (Strange Horticulture, Beacon Pines, and Chained Echoes).

Now we are preparing to start 2023 the right way and are making plans for what games we are going to be taking on over the weekend. Below, a group of our wonderful writers have shared their ideas and we would love for you to do the same! Have a read through our plans then take to the comments to let us know what yours are.

Happy gaming, and a happy new year!

Could 2023 really be the year that I played more new games and spent less time clearing out my backlog? Absolutely no chance!

I will be hosting a NYE party this weekend so it will be light games a-go-go. To the best of my knowledge, my pals have never played a Wii U, so this will be the perfect chance to introduce them to the wonderful world of Nintendo Land. There's likely to be a good dose of Super Mario Party and Nintendo Switch Sports thrown in for good measure too.

For the rest of the time, however, I am determined to play through more of Xenoblade Chronicles 3 because I can't have that staring at me into the new year for any longer. I'll also be hitting up Splatoon 3 again because nothing screams 'bring on 2023' quite like playing more games from 2022...

My actual NYE this year is going to be spent sans consoles, as I'm going on a little break to a cabin by the sea like a FANCY LADY, and me and my partner have decided to make it a tech-free weekend! Scary stuff.

But when I get back into a fresh new January, I will be playing Outer Wilds. Or rather, watching my partner play Outer Wilds (for the first time) and trying not to spoil any of the surprises. He plays that on the big screen, which leaves me free to play something chill and easy on my Switch. I started Dragon Quest Treasures, and that's been pretty nice, and I'd like to play more of Aka once it gets patched. Chill vibes only, as they say!

For the last few days of 2022, I’m probably not going to be gaming much as we squeeze in some final celebrations for what has personally been a pretty amazing year. Chained Echoes continues to dominate my game time (though I'm almost at the end), and I think I want to check out last week’s Shredder’s Revenge patch for some last-minute multiplayer.

Really, at the end of the year, I spend a lot of time thinking of games I want to kick out of the backlog in the next 12 months. Golden Sun is a huge one – I just bounced off of it when it first came out, but I know I’d love it now. I’ve also never played Freedom Planet, and with the sequel getting closer, I think it’s about time to knock this one off. Here’s to 2023 and even better things to come!

I'll try and sink a few more hours into Sports Story this weekend here and there, but to be honest, I'll be spending the majority of my time with my family to bring in the new year.

Having said that, I'll also no doubt be playing a bit more of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. I want to get the game done and out of the way in decent time so that I'm not completely burned out on Zelda by the time May comes around. That's when Tears of the Kingdom comes out... Thought you ought to know!

What a year this has been, especially if you are a fellow Nintendo Switch owner. Currently wrapping up Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion while debating if I will jump into the proper remake next. I keep hoping it lands on Switch eventually. Maybe when that totally real Switch Pro model shows up. Any day now...

Game of the Week is Pixel Cup Soccer: Ultimate Edition. Not being a mobile gamer this entire series passed me by until the eShop demo showed up and as a fan of Kunio sports title, this is simply irresistible.

I will be offline for some time after this last WAYP entry for 2022 so I wish everyone a Happy New Year! Oh my, a new Legend of Zelda entry! Is it May 2023 yet…?

I'll be saying goodbye to 2022 with Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythm Festival. I've even got the drum accessory, so I can party all night long! Apart from this, I'll be spending the remaining moments of the year working my way through the recently released indie games Sports Story and River City Girls 2.

The upcoming release of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has also inspired me to revisit BOTW (like a few others here), so I'll probably boot it up at some point over the next few days. Happy new year and bring on 2023!

I've got Chained Echoes and I've been wanting to dive into an RPG for the longest time. I've heard nothing but amazing things and couldn't resist downloading it — the challenge will be to dig in and stick with it as a dozen other neglected games give me the sad eyes.

Alternatively, I've got four-and-a-half months to find that final Korok seed in BOTW and knock up my 99.91% completion total to 100. That's definitely worth hours and hours and hours of searching, right?

We hope you all have a good final weekend of 2022! Add the main game you'll be playing in the poll below and leave a comment with your gaming plans for the celebrations ahead!

What game will you be maining as we head into 2023?
