I just got a wii-u for Christmas, and can't wait to play windwaker and fatal frame for the first time. I already own a switch...is there anything else I should be looking to grab on the Wii-U that isn't on Switch?
They get a lot of flak, but I really enjoyed Battlefield 1 & the first Battlefront - even the single player content. If they can manage putting out games on a system that isn't always online, then maybe this will add incentive to offer some singleplayer games in the frostbite engine. And after Battlefront II, I expect executives to be a lot more invested in making sure future lootcrates don't affect player power or progression. Players spoke with their wallets, finally. And with Disney intervening, it was enough.
@Yoshi He mentioned a specific timeframe: The focus would be on current hardware in "an ongoing effort to make sure that we drive our business forward through the balance of this holiday season but also the first calendar quarter as well."
So don't expect a revision to come before the end of the holiday in fiscal Q1 in Dec, or the first calendar quarter in March 2019.
Activision probably wanted to see how well it would sell on PS4 and (more importantly) Xbox before deciding whether to port a more scalable PC version. If they do a PC version, the Switch would follow if they choose to scale down far enough.
When you're selling nostalgia, it makes sense to sell to the playstation crowd first. The original wasn't released elsewhere, to my knowledge. The Xbox has similar specs in a locked architecture, so if you are going to get this game out as fast as possible to capitalize on the sudden success of remastered titles, those platforms are the obvious choice. It's possible success on the xbox marketplace will decide whether or not to port further as well, since Microsoft's crowd doesn't have the nostalgia advantage.
@Pandaman I like e-sports...but I think the best competitive e-sport Nintendo has for streamers are the Draft League formats for high-end Pokemon competitors. They might deserve a feature. Their Smogon community dates back to the gameboy, when they wrote their own battle simulator to play others online. Today, there are franchised teams that draft pokemon so that each league only has one player with that particular monster, then compete in a regular season, elimination playoffs, and eventual championship. It more interesting to watch, since each team has 12 pokemon they could bring. So players create their teams based on what they know their opponent could bring, creating strategies that are highly situational and different from the Official tournament's teams (which are virtually all the same).
In Shanghai here - I saw a TV spot for Pokemon Let's Go offered by an import retailer on the public bus system this week. It's the first console game I can remember seeing on a TV spot. We see mobile stuff all of the time, and Cafe PC games like CS GO or Dungeon Fighter Online.
@countzero They should require a passode available online at release. Then you wouldn't need internet on the device to activate it - just the passcode. Give the code to retailers via email at the time the game launches. Have them print it on every receipt. Clearly label the box that the game requires a passcode available at this website, or at the retailer at launch.
There's no GTS or online battles unless you have friend codes. For me, that makes this mostly a single-player experience.
That said, I may try to back up a save so I can try a second playthrough in Chinese to feel like I'm practicing. Unless I can just create a second account without affecting my main save, in which case I'll do that instead.
Man, we haven't had a decent Pokemon movie since.... Ok, we haven't had a decent Pokemon movie. The first one was the best, and even that was more passable fan service. But I'm legitimately interested in this - hiring people with a passion, taking a big risk with the art style and the humor - I think it'll pay off!
Actually, this was intended to be 18-. Clearly anyone over the age of 18 would read mature themes into the innocent kids-friendly puzzler. As proof, check out the variety of explanations in the nintendolife comments section.
1) 4g internet with a dataplan rolled in.
2) Cameras for AR support and backwards compatibility with the 3DS line, complete with a 3DS cartridge slot. With a resolution bump, this would add new life to that line as well, perhaps adding cross-over 3DS software sales while baking 3DS hardware sales into Switch hardware sales numbers. Blurring that line might work for investors.
3) Pokemon Go Switch pre-installed. It's pokemon go, except single-player encounters are now based on the core pokemon games ruleset. Pokemon have moves from the game. Captures can be transferred to Pokemon: Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee.
I don't know....as someone too young to have nostalgia for these, most of the NES games I want to play at this point are impossible due to licensing issues.
Mega Man 1-6, Castle of Illusion series, Battletoads, ducktails, batman, mother, shadowgate, gargoyle's quest 2, crystalis, FF3, bugs bunny crazy castle, The Disney series (particularly aladdin), Jurassic park, Ninja Gaiden 3, Pacman, Romance of the Three Kingdoms 1/2, star wars, galaga....
Its not that I don't want NES games. I do. It's that the ones I do want are ones that will never see release on a service like this because the third parties have realized that there is money in recreating these games or re-releasing their own collections.
@KryptoniteKrunch In this case....probably. Bethesda has been really good about creating games that can downscale easily. Not so with every developer. The latest Assiassin's Creed was designed with the PS4-Pro and XB1X as the downscaled ports of the power PC version. If I remember right, they reduce postprocessing, resolution, and framerate to play on the base PS4 and XBone. After that....what else can you cut, really? Add fog of war and limit the characters visible on screen? It doesn't feel the same, and might turn the Nintendo first-timers off the franchise. Ubisoft could either do what they did with the Vita and create an original spinoff title tailored to the system, or stream the real experience and get it out faster. Maybe both.
That said, the problem with streaming is that access will eventually be lost. Ideally they could provide download codes for the PC server host. Players could opt to host the game and stream locally if they have a powerful enough PC. Eliminates lag, and is archived for as long as you want.
The #1 reason to own an Ouya, soon to be the #1 local multiplayer experience on switch. Until Super Smash Bros arrives a few months later, and Killer Queen makes a console debut to give it a run for its money.
Oh Matt Makes...I love you and both of your games I've played are stellar, standout titles that control like a dream. I sincerely hope the decision to release Celeste first - holding towerfall until now, when the space seems so much more crowded - doesn't prove to be a mistake.
Regardless...I will buy for the 4th time. It's the only game from the past 10 years I consistently replay that isn't an MMO.
Telltale games is a company that couldn't quite keep pace with its own success. They rapidly changed from a handful of people peddling an ancient genre from a bench at conventions to a major partner for established, story-driven IP.
As an independent developer on a tight budget releasing the Strongbad games and the Sam and Max series, fans were more than willing to forgive their engine's shortcomings.
But when they started to pick up much more lucrative contracts after establishing themselves as the forerunners in the genre, they just weren't ready with the equipment and/or personnel to make a AAA game and it showed. I applaud them for turning down potentially lucrative contracts they could easily have cash-grabbed and continued at their former level of quality to focus on their engine. And I hope they can stay afloat and independent long enough to update their stuff and use the money from their larger properties to create better games, perhaps even hearkening back to the humor and excellent writing of their earlier material.
They've got a daunting task ahead of them - no one is designing quality engines with the point-and-click games in mind. But hopefully, by taking a step back and focusing their efforts on creating a better platform for the future, they can continue to advance the genre. What they've been able to do with the little they had to work with was nothing short of incredible.
I built a tablet specifically to play RTS games on the go with a touch screen and virtual hotkey overlay. I really want this to exist. But while I think it would be possible (phantasy star uses a keyboard in japan for MMOs), it probably wouldn't sell well with the necessary keyboard + mouse or keyboard + gyro option to be competitive in multiplayer. You could go LAN only or not have cross-play, but with starcraft 2's always online DRM, you've already lost portability if you want to give the same leveling system as PC. Starcraft 2, as it is on PC, just isn't the right game.
I would love to see a traditional RTS for switch with gyro controls and shift-style buttons for hotkeys, similar to what was done for Battle for Middle Earth 2 on xbox, but with gyro. But is there even a market there?
Maybe start with a tycoon game first. Less hotkeys needed, slower paced. Prove the controls can be enjoyable, at least to critics, before shooting for the moon.
Redoubt was amazing on PC, but also unexpectedly demanding (possibly on the CPU more than GPU? Don't remember).
I have a hunch that they're moving to a streaming solution to provide the best possible graphics without sacrificing framerate. If they allowed for local streamed play with a gaming PC that had it installed to stream without internet, I would be all in.
Some sort of streaming would explain why it isn't available at retail, but still has something exciting to announce.
I love how he always makes sure to say that this might be the last one he's ever working on. It allows him to avoid pressure to leave things out for sequels and push to get everything into the game he is working on.
Since Melee, Smash has always been remarkably ambitious about what it includes, all the way up until release. Since the Wii-U, even beyond that.
World of Warcraft, I'm on a classic gaming stint atm, and starting to hunt for platinum medals in Battle for Naboo. If you can ignore the prequel trilogy setting, it's probably my favorite of the Rogue Squadron series.
Nihilumbra was one of my favorites on Vita, but I don't know that I'll double dip. The story's compelling and the platforming has a really nice pacing when it comes to new rules. It gives just enough time to play with what you know and get comfortable before throwing the next curveball.
I want it to succeed....but I've never owned a wii-u and really want tropical freeze.
I want them to get the Donkey Kong License. Let them make the next DK 3D platformer, or Diddy Kong Racing with open-world kart racing, boss battles, and level editor.
I've invested in a GB Micro for the first time, and picked up a bunch of old GBA titles on Ebay. Currently playing through the gen 3 Pokemon games in an attempt to complete a gen 3 pokedex, as well as Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. It was a surprisingly good brawler, despite the prequel trilogy tie-in.
First Year PS4 Exlcusives (NOT PC ports, which discounts flower/final fantasy 14, etc)
Killzone
Knack
Infamous Second Sun
The Last of Us
Hohokum
Infamous first flight
Driveclub
Switch:
Snipperclips
1-2 Switch
Breath of the wild
Mario Odyssey

Splatoon 2
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Mario + Rabbids
I love my PS4, but my Switch had a much better first year in terms of exclusives.
To be fair, many of the ports were games that had never appeared on a Nintendo console before (Dark Souls, undertale, little nightmare, South Park, Crash Bandicot). If you game Nintendo-only, then those are new. If you never bought a wii-u, then everything was new. Personally didn't own a Wii-U and would be happy with the Mariokart treatment for Smash, but I'm hoping they gave it the Splatoon 2 treatment instead. Same base engine for faster turnaround, but tailored to the switch's capabilities with new content. I'm really not sure how many new stages/characters they would need to add or subtract before it becomes a new game entirely. Regardless, it'll be the best portable smash ever.
For those with every system, wait until 2019. All those third parties need time to create AAA games for Switch if they didn't jump on board until after seeing its success. Until then, expect most third parties to port whatever they can turn around in a year as they scramble to get a piece of the pie ASAP, learn the system and buy their developers some time for newer simultaneously launched SKUs. At E3, keep an eye on Square Enix, Sega, and Ubisoft for anything that might've been in the pipeline as follow ups to their earlier support but planned with some development before switch actually launched. AAA titles often take 2-4 years to bake. Annual franchises typically stagger multiple dev teams (AC, CoD, TW). Even if they wanted to make their next installment launch simultaneously on Switch, I'm not sure it would be possible this year after seeing the trouble Yooka-Laylee had with it.
Also, Detective Pikachu was way more interesting than I thought. I'd written it off before now.
@SmaggTheSmug Give me motion ala World of Goo and I'll jump on any rts...though mouse would be ideal. Would love WoW on Switch with a keyboard and 4G lan adapter...
@EasyDaRon It's more of a marketing algorithm than just programming push-notifications. The news you receive isn't necessarily the same as the news another regional device receives. Finding the right balance of respecting every region's privacy laws and Nintendo's child-friendly marketing while simultaneously providing the most targeted advertisement and tailored news experience for the most users possible is challenging.
I really liked the gyroscope controls on Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing's mobile version. Really, kart racing just needs a brake button, fire button, and jump/slide button. Gas doesn't need a button for mariokart, just change the fire button to rev the engines during the opening countdown.
I've said this before, but when the switch was announced, my first thought was that this or tower of guns was the title the system needed to resonate with hardcore gamers. An infinitely replayable randomized shooter is the perfect single-player on the go shooter. Now though, we have DOOM and Wolfenstein on the way - games whose AAA quality is sort of like comparing Diablo to Binding of Isaac. They are different, but the the bigger title will definitely sell more. The Switch has hardcore single-player shooters. I hope the market is still there.
Fe looks amazing, and so does Celeste. Celeste is the same devs as towerfall ascension, which didn't trailer well but felt amazing and aced reviews everywhere as a multiplayer single-screen platformer. I'd put towerfall above super mario bros vs. as the best single-screen arcade game of its kind of all time, so having Celeste as a surprise release in two weeks was pretty epic for me. First party might be a bit lackluster, though I applaud the return to a story for Tennis, and will definitely grab Tropical Freeze as I skipped the Wii-U.
@burninmylight They've already announced a mainline game is coming. They just didn't want it to be sun/moon. I kind of prefer it this way. I want them to make a full-fledged Pokemon RPG that is also designed to be console-quality, even if that takes time to develop.
I'm in-between major retail games I want to play right now, waiting on Mario Odyssey. I've got two PC MMOs I regularly sign into for 10 minutes a day to say hello to friends abroad and complete crafting goals, as well as roleplay with a writing group in game on Saturdays. My handheld time on 3DS has been primarily working to eventually complete a Pokedex. I've also joined a writing group for Pokemon forum RP this weekend, and am trying to keep familiar with the older titles for that.
This weekend so far: Cuphead (PC) Star Wars: The Old Republic (PC) World of Warcraft (PC)
Pokemon Gold (3DS) Pokemon Red (3DS) Pokemon Sun (3DS)
What I really want to see is touchscreen support. This is mix of city management and point-and-click adventure, and it would be a shame if mouse controls were locked to analogue sticks.
This was a really emotional game for me on PC. The story sticks with you for a long time, and it's the game I've discussed the most with my friends. The opening nearly put me off- I prefer to avoid sexual themes in videogames and it has a cinematic in a strip club in the intro - but I didn't hit any sexual content in the actual game itself. The tone is very dark and mature, dealing with government and police corruption and trying to appease the mafia and civil authorities just enough to do some good along the way. It was haunting, really.
I'm so ready for another game. US/UM aren't what I want, but I'll download regardless.
Gold/Silver VC doesn't excite me - great games (I've beaten each twice when I was younger), but going back to no abilities and 256 feels a bit too limited. Maybe if/when Crystal is released, since I didn't play that one.
This is consistently rated the highest rhythm game on ios, so not really surprised. That said, the Swtich version of VOEZ got rid of all Chinese-language music in its release, due to licensing issues.
Can anyone with Deemo on Switch tell me if Chinese-language music still exists in this one?
Would love for them to make a new Sam and Max season, or Monkey Island. I miss Telltale's comedy writers, and haven't picked up one of their titles in a long time.
I love arcade Mario, but Towerfall Ascension modernized and perfected the sub-genre, and is coming to switch soon with 4 player support. I think I'll hold out.

Even if they wanted to make their next installment launch simultaneously on Switch, I'm not sure it would be possible this year after seeing the trouble Yooka-Laylee had with it.
Also, Detective Pikachu was way more interesting than I thought. I'd written it off before now.
Re: Hori's New Tabletop Switch Stand Comes With USB Ports For Accessorising On The Move
@SmaggTheSmug Give me motion ala World of Goo and I'll jump on any rts...though mouse would be ideal. Would love WoW on Switch with a keyboard and 4G lan adapter...
Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Life's Favourite Games From Switch's First Year
By time played (2017 releases only, so not counting Celeste):
1. Super Mario Odyssey
2. Arms
3. Voez
4. Sonic Mania
5. Snipperclips
Re: The Nintendo Switch News Channel Took Almost A Year To Create
@EasyDaRon It's more of a marketing algorithm than just programming push-notifications. The news you receive isn't necessarily the same as the news another regional device receives. Finding the right balance of respecting every region's privacy laws and Nintendo's child-friendly marketing while simultaneously providing the most targeted advertisement and tailored news experience for the most users possible is challenging.
Re: Take-Two "Impressed" With Switch, But Has No Games To Announce Right Now
An investor's Q and A session really isn't the place to be announcing future titles. Marketing would go ballistic.
Re: Raise The Chequered Flag Because Mario Kart Tour Is Racing Onto Mobile Soon
I really liked the gyroscope controls on Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing's mobile version. Really, kart racing just needs a brake button, fire button, and jump/slide button. Gas doesn't need a button for mariokart, just change the fire button to rev the engines during the opening countdown.
Re: Wield The Power Of Gods (And Some Huge Guns) As Immortal Redneck Heads To Switch
Re: Nintendo Direct Mini Is Happening Right Now
Fe looks amazing, and so does Celeste.
Re: Random: Pokémon Fans Are Losing Their Minds Over Pikachu Talking
Only thing that could've made this better is if they cast Morgan Freemon ONLY for that half a second line.
Re: Microsoft Wants To Reach Gamers On Rival Systems, Says Xbox Chief Phil Spencer
@AlexOlney Kameo please!
Re: We Could See Another 3D Mario Game On Switch, According To Yoshiaki Koizumi
I know this would never happen but...re-imagine the Mario Bros. Arcade in 3D?
Shields own face from tomatoes!
Re: Exclusive: Game Freak Explains Why We Should All Play Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon
@burninmylight They've already announced a mainline game is coming. They just didn't want it to be sun/moon.
I kind of prefer it this way. I want them to make a full-fledged Pokemon RPG that is also designed to be console-quality, even if that takes time to develop.
Re: Talking Point: What Games Are You Playing This Weekend? - The Triumphant(?) Return
This weekend so far:
Cuphead (PC)
Star Wars: The Old Republic (PC)
World of Warcraft (PC)
Pokemon Gold (3DS)
Pokemon Red (3DS)
Pokemon Sun (3DS)
Re: This is the Police Gets Switch Retail and eShop Release Dates
What I really want to see is touchscreen support. This is mix of city management and point-and-click adventure, and it would be a shame if mouse controls were locked to analogue sticks.
Re: This is the Police Gets Switch Retail and eShop Release Dates
@SuperCharlie78 I'd go gog.com . They match US prices 1 to 1 in euros. So expect 15 EU.
Re: This is the Police Gets Switch Retail and eShop Release Dates
This was a really emotional game for me on PC. The story sticks with you for a long time, and it's the game I've discussed the most with my friends. The opening nearly put me off- I prefer to avoid sexual themes in videogames and it has a cinematic in a strip club in the intro - but I didn't hit any sexual content in the actual game itself. The tone is very dark and mature, dealing with government and police corruption and trying to appease the mafia and civil authorities just enough to do some good along the way.
It was haunting, really.
Re: Pokémon Ultra Sun And Moon Gets New Trailer And A Fresh Beast
I'm so ready for another game. US/UM aren't what I want, but I'll download regardless.
Gold/Silver VC doesn't excite me - great games (I've beaten each twice when I was younger), but going back to no abilities and 256 feels a bit too limited. Maybe if/when Crystal is released, since I didn't play that one.
Re: Review: DEEMO (Switch eShop)
@zipmon Awesome! Thank you!
Re: Review: DEEMO (Switch eShop)
This is consistently rated the highest rhythm game on ios, so not really surprised. That said, the Swtich version of VOEZ got rid of all Chinese-language music in its release, due to licensing issues.
Can anyone with Deemo on Switch tell me if Chinese-language music still exists in this one?
Re: It Seems Like Telltale Games Has Ambitious Plans For Nintendo Switch
Would love for them to make a new Sam and Max season, or Monkey Island. I miss Telltale's comedy writers, and haven't picked up one of their titles in a long time.
Re: Reminder: Arcade Archives Mario Bros. is Out Today
I love arcade Mario, but Towerfall Ascension modernized and perfected the sub-genre, and is coming to switch soon with 4 player support. I think I'll hold out.
