Nintendo has released a new batch of info on the upcoming 3DS title Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, along with a brand-new trailer.
As well as releasing this new footage, the story behind the game is fleshed out, too:
In Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, Ultra Wormholes were strange pockets of space that mysteriously appeared throughout the Alola region and were shrouded in mystery. In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon, these Ultra Wormholes return and players can ride on the Legendary Pokémon Solgaleo and Lunala to travel through them to reach the various worlds that lie beyond. Players can visit many different worlds via these Ultra Wormholes—including Ultra Megalopolis! The world of Ultra Megalopolis is a place that has had its light stolen by Necrozma. Within this world, a mysterious tower-like building shines with brilliant light but whatever waits at the top of this structure is currently unknown.
In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon players will meet the Ultra Recon Squad, a strange group that have come from a world that lives beyond an Ultra Wormhole. Players will see the story told from different perspective in each version of the game, with Dulse and Zossie playing a central role in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Soliera and Phyco taking that role in Pokémon Ultra Moon. The Ultra Recon Squad bring with them a new Ultra Beast—UB Adhesive.
We've also got some details on this strange new beast, alongside UB Burst and UB Assembly:
UB Adhesive
Type: PoisonThis Ultra Beast’s head is filled with venom and it shoots this venom out from the poisonous needle on the top of its head. It is said to be intelligent enough to understand human speech and displays many emotions.
In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon, players will be able to meet other new Ultra Beasts in addition to UB Adhesive. In Pokémon Ultra Sun, players will able to meet UB Burst, while in Pokémon Ultra Moon, it will be UB Assembly.
UB Burst
Type: Fire/GhostUB Burst has a head made up of a collection of curious sparks, which it can remove and make explode. It tricks targets into letting their guard down with its funny behaviour then, when its opponent is close, it surprises them by blowing up its head without warning.
UB Assembly
Type: Rock/Steel
This Ultra Beast is a collection of many life-forms. While it appears to be made up of stones stacked atop one another, each “stone” is in fact a separate life-form. When confronting opponents, the eyes on each of its stones begin to glow bright red.
What do you make of this Pocket Monster-themed info-burst, and the new trailer? Let us know with a comment.

Still don't know if this is the same game with DLC or a new game set on top of the original. It's rather looking like DLC in double-dip form unfortunately. Here's hoping for a National Dex though (as per the book being released in December).
Too many ultrabeasts now. They all look cool but they're essentially legendaries which we were inundated with anyway. Would be cooler if they evolved.
Wow.. Now I'm excited, I was hesitant on if I need to cancel the steel book collection I just wasn't sure it was a 3rd game split or direct sequels... I honestly still don't know but the amount of new content has me really hyped for these games.
Sounds like DLC being sold as a full game. Nothing new for the Pokémon series; only this time it's not a merger, but two versions of the same DLC.
Eugh, fine.
Sailor Moon...!!
Eh, wrong channel.
I mean... Ultra Moon... !!!
Seems more like DLC then a new game, I'm going to wait for the new Switch game instead.
I love UB Adhesive, but not enough to buy one of these games.
Pokémon Switch couldn't come soon enough. The Ultra games make me less excited whenever they reveal anything new. We don't need new legendaries. Some non-Gen I Alolan forms would have made this a more tantalising purchase, especially to coincide with the rerelease of the Gen II games.
I'm expecting the Ultra games to be the poorest selling main series Pokémon games to date.
Already bought 3 Pokémon main games for my 3DS, I would've loved to go back to Sun & Moon if this were DLC, like an Ultra upgrade
I simply don't have the motivation to train another team from the ground up. The story may be very different but ultimately it's still another version of Sun & Moon. (see what I did there?)
Not too enthusiastic for this games based on what I’ve seen so far. The whole ultra beast thing never really caught on for me. Hopefully these don’t turn out to be mere definitive editions of Sun and Moon, but right now I’m not too optimistic.
It looks more promising than the previous trailers but one of my favourite things about the series was how each region felt like a real world place that I could explore.
The sense that it was a slightly better version of the real world where you could go wherever was what I found so cool when I was younger...wormholes and giant beanstalks and dark alien cities kind of ruin that for me..
This game looks better and better with every trailer; a day-one buy for me!
@Kimyonaakuma Although they have implied in the past with Clefairy, Deoxys, Giratina, Elgyem, Solrock and Lunatone (and some others I'm probably missing) that Pokemon from other planets and dimensions exist. So it really isn't that too farfetched of a concept for Pokemon
Tron... anyone? No? Okay then...
Adding new species is the only thing that might make me spring for this game. The obsessive collector in me needs to be able to say that I've truly caught them all.
@UmbreonsPapa A couple of space themed pokemon isn't really the same thing as a whole alien race and their pokemon trying to take over the Alola region.
Giratina was a little similar but they didn't go as overboard as they are here...
Ultra Beasts are like . . . pokemon from another dimension right? I never did like the idea or designs.
They should have led with this trailer. All the previous trailers make US/UM look bland and uninspired
This trailer has made me more excited for the game and I see these being sequels like Black2/White2 and not just DLC.....Pokémon has always done stuff like this and I don’t why people are so surprised that they are doing it now. I, for one, am going to enjoy these games and I don’t care if they are “just DLC” versions.
Idiotic not to release these on Switch.
I'm really liking what I've seen about this game. This definitely feels more akin to what they did with Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, with a completely new story, rather than just a Pokémon Yellow-style enhanced version.
Everyone: "Eh looks like DLC, I'll past"
Also, Everyone: Quietly clicks on the preorder button
It's funny how everyone is saying they aren't going to buy it. I guess we will see how that holds up with this games sales xD
It'll still sell like hotcakes either way
These are all just things that should have been in the first games; sailing between the islands, closure for the Ultra Beasts, a point to the legendaries, and presumably closure for Lillie.
People are acting like they've never played a third version. From the looks of it, this game has a lot of new stuff that they've never offered in third versions before.
@patbacknitro18 3rd versions usually sell a lot less than a new generation.
I'm excited to play Ultra Sun. I don't need big changes to make it a worthwhile purchase for me. I like exploring, catching and evolving new Pokémon. They have added new areas and there are more Pokémon to discover, that's all I need. I always search for every hidden item and rotate my team so I get to experience as many Pokémon as possible while not getting overpowered in the process. I have evolved almost every Pokémon at least once but one I haven't yet, is Larvesta and it appeared in one of the trailers so I'm happy.
Yup, now I’m for sure getting these games
Okay, NOW you have my attention Game Freak. This actually makes me want to buy this game. Took you long enough.
I take that 50% of the comments didn't actually watch the recent japanese story trailer.
@diaverik I don’t mean this in a rude way, but why should we? They are trying to sell a game to a different audience and region. Why do I have to go out of my way to watch a foreign trailer just to convince myself to buy it? They should be the ones to deliver trailers that make me excited for this game.
Overall, it looks ok. I love Pokémon so of course I’ll play it. Am I happy with what I am seeing? No. It looks like DLC for sure. At some point the formula has to change. Things are getting very stale. Been playing since red and blue on the GB.... maybe that’s why....
Didnt play sun or moon so this should be fun. My last pokemon was black 2. It was good but the completionist in me ruined it and i didnt finish it. This time i plan to enjoy the game without the urge of catching everything and getting everything.
This is the first trailer to make me legitimately reconsider skipping this game and they should've shown this a long time ago. It hits all of the notes it needed to as far as new content, new storyline content, new areas, new Pokémon. Still not sure there's much substance here knowing Game Freak, but this does show USUM in a MUCH better light than any other previous trailer.
Ehh looks like a new story to me at least I hope so.
The new locations in Ultra Space that they showed look like nothing more than pretty hallways. I don't see any room for exploration. It's just a tunnel that you walk through like a side attraction at a theme park.
It looks like they're just adding fluff to the game to call it new. Not a first for the series, but something that I did think they had abandoned years ago.
If you go on the official website it says that there are multiple worlds to explore....that doesn’t say just pretty hallways to me. They have essentially added a new world or more to explore and people are still complaining. Man some people can never be happy.
Adhesive looks like it'll be my favorite Ultra Beast! 8DD
@Kimyonaakuma there's quite a lot unreleastic in the series though, and it's not like this is the first time we've entered other dimensions in the series (Pokémon Platinum).
@Sir_Anthony Think the problem with DLC is we'd already have strong level 100 Pokemon to breeze through the story.
Why didn't you show this stuff sooner, TPC? I would've probably preordered already, going into the wormholes and exploring Ultra space was what I've been saying I wanted to do.
Though I hope this doesn't mean Kanto is now out of the question, but I can't see them putting Ultra space AND Kanto in...
@Angelic_Lapras_King True, I probably forgot about that because Pokémon has never been a real challenge for me with or without lvl 100 mons.
Did anyone else see Necrozma happily jumping around from 0:18 to 0:20? lol
Still not a day 1 buy for me, but the added sci-fi components are definitely piquing my interest.
@TheLZdragon: Make 'em Belgian Waffles and I'm sold!
Finally, these games are looking interesting.
It's Pokemon so it was always a day 1 buy for me but I'm happy to see that it's looking more like a Black/White to Black 2 and White 2 situation than a Diamond/Pearl to Platinum. I'm not sure what more people are expecting from a game in the same generation.
My hype for this game is kind of fading, actually. We're getting closer to the release date and the game's changes are very few compared to the B2/W2 treatment we were expecting. Unless they show more in a related ND, I think this game won't be much more than a rehash.
And boy howdy do I want to be proven wrong this time around.
@Pokefanmum82 Just calling it like I see it. What they showed were hallways leading up to a fight with the ultra beast at the end. There were no paths to explore, no wild pokemon or trainers to fight in these areas. The Pokemon Company can market their game however they want, but that's all it is.
I'm so ready for another game. US/UM aren't what I want, but I'll download regardless.
Gold/Silver VC doesn't excite me - great games (I've beaten each twice when I was younger), but going back to no abilities and 256 feels a bit too limited. Maybe if/when Crystal is released, since I didn't play that one.
FINALLY! They finally released a trailer that shows real new content and this actually looks really good!
@greengecko007 and you can tell that from just 5 sec look at those sections, please!!!!! No one can tell that. I admit in Sun and Moon, it was like that but you could be wrong about Ultra Sun/Moon. And from previous trailers Kartana’s area had people in it. And the fact that Ultra Megalopolis is a city lends to the fact that the worlds are more than just “pretty hallways”. And that’s me calling it like I see it.
"Fly through 3 gold rings to reach your house!"
But seriously, Pokemon looks to have made some drastic changes since I've been gone.
As long as we get both new Ultra Beasts and Alolan Variants in this game, I'll be happy.
@Pokefanmum82 Uh, yeah, that's exactly right. The trailer showed traveling through the wormhole to Ultra Space, and then appearing in a hallway that lead up to the Ultra Beast. If you think Ultra Space is going to be some fully realized alternate region, you will be gravely disappointed.
@greengecko007 I have looked at this trailer multiple times and there was more than just a hallway in each of the worlds....there is a full city and second I am not going to be disappointed. I am hyped for this game and will take the game for what is, a new game in one of my favourite regions with enough new stuff to make me happy.
