UK studio Playtonic has broken its silence to celebrate the first birthday of Yooka-Laylee, as well as hint that it's about to lift the lid on its next project.
In a recent blog post, Playtonic said:
Yes, hands up, we’ve been a bit quiet for a while. But we promise it’s because we’ve been far too busy working on covert goodness, and not because we’ve been down the pub for 4 months. Soon we’ll start talking more actively, both about extra content for Yooka-Laylee, plus… other stuff. Shhh!
We assume that means Yooka-Laylee - which launched on Switch not so long ago after arriving on Xbox One and PS4 last year - will be getting DLC content of some description.
However, it's the promise of "other stuff" and "covert goodness" that has us really excited. Yooka-Laylee was a crowd-funded title that was created on a fairly limited budget in a surprisingly fast time, and perhaps doesn't show what Playtonic (which has expanded massively since the game was first confirmed) is truly capable of. Given the amazing talent at the studio, we can't wait to see what it's working on next.
But that's not all - to properly mark Yooka-Laylee's first birthday, Playtonic is holding a special giveaway:
To celebrate Yooka-Laylee’s first birthday, we’ve got a very special giveaway for you offering the chance to win one of five ultra-exclusive character parade posters, signed by the entire Playtonic dev team!
These posters were originally given only to the ladies and gents who worked on the game. However, the good news is that we’ve managed to convince the team to keep them off eBay long enough to hold this giveaway.
Want a chance to win an exclusive Yooka-Laylee Character Parade Poster? Head over to our Twitter page for details!
Let us know what your predictions are for Yooka-Laylee's future and Playtonic's next game by posting a comment.

Even though I want Yooka-Twoley (I still need to play the first, ugh, so behind on games), I'm hoping for another spiritual successor. I miss Jet Force Gemini, maybe that could happen next...? Probably not. TwT
Guess it could be another Spiritual Successor to a Rare game. Even if it is, it indeed would be nice if Yooka-Laylee had a follow up someday.
@Banjos_Backpack The thing that would really fix the game for me would be a map. I find myself getting lost on the levels so easily and playing Yooka Laylee after Mario Odyssey made the lack of a map that much more stark. I agree the more linear levels of Banjo just worked better than the more sandbox-y levels of YL.
Maybe give us a physical version of Yooka Laylee?
Laylee's Bad Fang Day... Seriously though, Yooka Laylee was okay, but I felt like the physics were wrong. It never felt polished to me, but I suppose that was to be expected for a first game... From industry veterans.. Who fairly enough were on a tight budget. I have high hopes for the company moving forward, maybe with a bit more tweaking they can spit and polish their games a bit more going forward, and with good old Phil Spencer having a fairly loose grip on Microsoft's IP, Playtonic can literally be Rareware again and bring Banjo Kazooie and Conker back to form.
Or hey, Nintendo, let them make that successor to Diddy Kong Racing. Doesn't seem like Sonic will be making another interesting multi-vehicle racing game any time soon.
We assume that means Yooka-Laylee...will be getting DLC content of some description.
The final stretch goal for the Kickstarter was free DLC for all backers (and will probably be paid for everyone else), so they weren't done with the game when it released.
I'm still holding out for a physical release...
@Joeynator3000 there is actually a spiritual successor to jet force gemini in the works by chameleon games. It's called Tamarin. An alpha trailer was shown off at gamescom.
I got my backer copy for the Switch, but I've had so many other games to play that it's fallen to the wayside. I'm kinda hoping that the "other stuff" is them adding some of that polish that people always say it's lacking so that by the time I do get around to playing it it'll be at the best it can possibly be. Something new working with a bigger budget and team would also be good.
Here we go... Spiritual successor to Diddy Kong Racing... fingers crossed!
Goldeneye - style FPS !!!
I am certainly interested to know what Playtonic are potentially working on next. I would like to see them explore different genres.
I kinda hope that it's not a spiritual successor to something from their past but a game that's mostly new. Even if it iterates upon an old formula, it would be great for them to show that they're not relying on nostalgia alone and aren't past their prime.
Yooka-Laylee Racing?
If Yooka-Laylee was a Banjo inspired game, why not Diddy Kong Racing 2? We could do with better Kart Kompetition....
A new fps like GoldenEye, Perfect Dark and Timesplitters
I'm still holding out for a physical release. I usually don't mind buying digital, but with several popular Indies getting physical releases, I'd love a physical version.
As for a potential new game, I'll be interested regardless but yeah a new adventure/shooter in the likes of JFG would be cool.
I was looking forward to this game, then its release date was pushed back to correct the flaws, then it was released to poor to average reviews. But there were enough reviews saying that if camera and some other stuff could be overlooked there was reasonable game to be had.
The only thing that was overlooked was the price. This should have been released at a budget price.
Well...
1. Do More Cartoonish games for Kids.
2. Release them on Physical for Switch as well.
3. No more Broken games.
Yooka laylee racing
Yookas bad skin day
@nkarafo
Coming soon...Flawed Sunlight, the spiritual successor to Perfect Dark! Even though I'm kidding, I'd still buy that because of the potential upside. My friends and I still play Perfect Dark multiplayer.
@Joeynator3000 yes please there’s been nothing like it since
My future plans for Yooka-Laylee are waiting a few more months to see if they announce the physical edition. If they don't, I'll go for the Xbox One version.
Yooka Laylee seemed to be too ambitious for it’s own good. After level 1 it was a disjointed, inconsistent mess, with problematic cameras, huge, empty worlds, and the hub world was just awful.
I think the team ran out of juice too quick when they realised the scale of what it was they were trying to do. If Yookas Worlds were half the size and had less than half as many Pagies, it would have allowed them more room to explore creative ideas and characters.
Very disappointing. Especially since Yooka and Laylee’s designs are so incredibly brilliant. I just love their design.
Let's hope for the next game they upgrade de gameplay and the physics. We want games that get the best from the old times, but we don't want them exactly how they were in the old times lol
Hopefully they are adding the N64 mode that they didn't have working yet.
@the_beaver I thought gameplay and physics were fine. Camera and content were lacking, though. And generally buggy.
Calling it now... their next game will actually be called Covert Goodness, and it will be an MGS-style third person stealth game. But done in a snarky, cartoony, colourful, over-the-top manner.
Outside of Perfect Dark GBC it’s not a genre Rare ever explored properly, so they would be free to create something unique without living in their own shadows.
Happy to see DLC but I kind of hope they ditch the game after that and redesign from scratch rather than doing anything more with the IP. I can’t say I found the characters in this game particularly memorable at all, largely across the board and the titular characters especially just didn’t click.
Gameplay wise hopefully they’ve learnt their lessons in terms of map design. The scale relative to what was in the map for the entire game just felt so off and being a platformer, everything else basically suffered.
Good for them. After their poor handling of Kickstarter by treating Nintendo backers as 2nd class citizens, I'd rather they keep their messy games away from Nintendo systems.
Let me guess...
Another colourful collectathon platformers?
Not for me. I thought World 1 was brilliant & World 2 was good, but everything after was downhill.
I’m done with Playtonic, unless they put out something really special, but I doubt it.
People are/were expecting way too much from these guys.
I want them to get the Donkey Kong License. Let them make the next DK 3D platformer, or Diddy Kong Racing with open-world kart racing, boss battles, and level editor.
Can someone inform me as to what the file size for Yooka-Laylee on Switch is?
I was so excited to get this on the Switch but seeing it’s still £35 and it’s been under a tenner for physical on the PS4 and XB1 I can’t help but feel we’re getting the short end of the stick.
No purchase for me until the price comes down!
Really excited. This team is great, and I really enjoyed Yooka-Laylee. Looking forward to what’s to come
Yooka-Laylee was a good game. It wasn't great but it was good and I had fun playing it. I never finished it though. There were just a bunch of small things I didn't really enjoy that sort of made me lose interest as I played. But I'm sure they are capable of making great games and I look forward to seeing what they come up with next. Maybe the DLC for Yooka-Laylee will make me want to play through it again and finish the game this time.
@Banjos_Backpack I agree with you, I sightly skipped casino level, its quite boring. When you learn the fly movement on the world 5 entrance, it’s all a bit easier to explore.
Like banjo, never. It was an awesome game that i completed more than 10 times, and ocarina of time, more than 50 haha!!!
The elephant in the room: true sequel to Banjo Kazoo nuts and bolts that we all want on switch.
Id even take a nuts and bolts port.
@flightsaber i agree. Another Diddy kong racer would be amazing. It was far more fun than mario kart and had spade fulls of charm. Best cart racing gamer ever made imo...well plane and hover craft too 😁
@Puajo ahhhhh ocarina of time. My all time favorite game!
@Kidfunkadelic83 I can still hear the music... and the plane going over in the titles! Loved Diddy Kong Racer, played that for hours with my husband back when we first moved in together. It would be fantastic to see some of these games back.
Is yooka lay lee getting a physical release?
It needed 30 more frames per second
@Banjos_Backpack I'm somewhat on the same boat. I did get to the end boss, but it's such a chore to beat it, I just gave up. It's not fun or enticing. There some great parts in this game, but too many bad parts tarnish it to the point where I'm not sure it's worth it.
I hope they celebrate the anniversary with a discount of Yooka-Laylee on Switch. I want to get it but I'm in no rush and would like to get it a bit cheaper.
Dang. I don’t have a Twitter and feel it’s not worth making one simply for a contest I have little chance of winning... oh well.
Cool.
@Dethmunk The Switch is going to overtake the Xbox One within 6 months of a Pokemon game releasing, it is already like 16 million units sold now. I don't think it will overtake PS4 but it will make a dent which in itself is impressive for a console late to the race.
