Love this game, I'm just mechanically inept to play it, though. Great to see it will continue to get more support, and looking forward to see how Kefla plays in the hands of pros next tour season.
Disney thinks it got one over Nintendo, but this is not a loss at all for Smash. I'd rather have more iconic characters than Sora. KH isn't all that great past the first couple of games, anyway.
Funko can actually make stuff that doesn't look bland and soulless. Pity they got big on the soulless stuff, though, but I support them doing these newer lines. Their Cuphead Vinyl Collectibles are pretty good, too.
Nintendo doesn't have to put a dime into Smash esports at all. You do that to get more players to buy and play your game. Smash's success is already there even without Nintendo giving cash, so why should they? Hey, no one's forcing Smash pros to play the game. They can always learn Fortnite or DotA 2 if they're in it for cash. The sheer number of players playing Smash means that top pros can move on to more financially-rewarding games and there would still be other people who'll replace them easy.
@Gamesurfer With more and more previously console exclusives coming to the PC (RDR2, Death Stranding, Quantic Dream games, rumored Horizon Zero Dawn, etc.), the subset of people who have a decent PC and a PS4 or Xbox One might not be as keen to jump to the new consoles. I'm one of those people, and though I'll probably get one of the next-gen consoles down the line, they'd have to have some great console exclusives to make me buy.
@Gwynbleidd If he has a contract and is paid to play videogames, then yeah, he's a professional player. Same as with athletes, they get paid to play sports, they're also professionals. Not all professionals are white-collar workers who need degrees and certifications/licenses. You should look up the dictionary definition of professional sometime.
@JaxonH Smash is not intended to be a hall of fame for game characters. If it is, Warcraft would be a bigger cultural icon from Blizzard than Overwatch. It revolutionized the RTS genre and spawned a legendary MMO that's still around when most of its peers have died.
Or if you really wanted an FPS character to use for representation purposes, Gordon Freeman, B.J. Blazkowicz, and Chell are more historic characters than Tracer, all trailblazers in FPS history that paved the way for Tracer and her Overwatch peers.
@Porky Kaplan only talked about it because someone asked him a question. I think it would be rude if Jeff just answered "next question" to a totally harmless question ultimately.
@Spudtendo "Oh no, I can't take the opinions of others, so I'll just put them on an ignore list instead!" Dude, grow up. Why bother wading in the comments thread if you're not gonna do actual discourse? I'd understand if the people you're putting on mute are rude and cusses you out. No, just because of a difference of opinion, you're muting people. I mean, I don't even have a horse in the National Dex issue, so this really doesn't bother me either way, just found your, uh, "discussion" methods suspect.
Also, I'm pretty sure many hardliners in the Dex issue are adamant about not buying the new games. It just won't show in the sales figures because there are more new players today who don't have as much of a history with Pokemon as those hardliners, more than enough to negate their boycott. Growing world population vis-a-vis statistics and all that.
@Abes3 Careful, your envy is showing. But really, I doubt Nintendo (or any other AAA game company) cares much about errant minimum-wage earners unwittingly stocking shelves early of games that aren't officially released yet. The companies don't lose money over it, and it's terrible if they actually asked Walmart to punish lowly-paid workers for something that ultimately didn't hurt anyone at all and was probably an unintentional mistake. Realize that only a subset of the population knows (or cares) that Witcher 3 for Switch shouldn't be out this early.
If you're so envious about other people getting it early, you're free to order that item from whichever Walmart branch that was.
@Smigit They probably did market research on that one and figured that they're okay with charging more for larger resins. They certainly seem to have a stable market for it. I'm with you that I would love for them to make smaller resin items with more reasonable prices, though I don't fault them for going the direction they did.
As I'm a sucker for mini retro consoles with decent emulation (even though I can just roll one of those RetroPie thingies and call it a day), this will make a nice addition to the SNES and NES mini consoles I have on my desk (still waffling on the Neo-Geo and PS ones). I think what some others would be waiting for is if there would be an exploit tool for this Genesis console like there are for other consoles - it certainly helps in expanding the library if you have access to ROMs.
Worth a look, to be honest. Not really feeling the main character design much, but I'm more interested in the game mechanics that the game has to offer, anyway.
@Trajan No announcement of Fighters Pass 2 has been made yet, so hold off on complaining about optionally forking over $25 for 5 more fighters. Who knows, maybe they'd still be included in the original Pass, making it a bigger bargain and an easier sell to Smash owners still on the edge about it.
@RadioHedgeFund If you're more into amiibo functionality than collecting, I don't blame you if you go into, uh, "aftermarket" tags for it. No sense paying the cost of what sometimes could be a full game (or even a collector's edition if you look at the $100 price of the Guardian amiibo) just for extra DLC content.
I suspect Nintendo is concerned about having to take back in unsold inventory which is why they're hesitant to re-release amiibos until a game necessitates it like Smash. They probably got burned by AC amiibo Festival, I've seen local retailers here pack in unsold AC amiibos as a freebie when buying a Switch unit some time back.
@Heavyarms55 Nintendo has their own development team if they really wanted to do a remake. They have plenty of talent in-house. It's a good resume item if these fan project devs apply elsewhere, but without sounding mean because these devs seem to be good at what they do, Nintendo doesn't need them.
Let's not forget that Nintendo almost always don't look at projects in progress and then offer to fund development midway. That's more of an Epic Games Store sort of deal.
@Tasuki Expect to not be able to transfer profile data across platforms. Blizzard didn't have it for PS4 to PC. It's an even bigger stretch that they'd make the extra effort to be able to move from PS4 to Switch. It's not a matter of technical limitation (we're talking about Blizzard here) as it is probably an upper management decision to keep it as such.
I'm just happy that there's X-Men representation on this game. Disney has been trying their darnedest to make Fox-held properties irrelevant in Marvel games (see: Lego Marvel Superheroes 2). Looks like the Fox buyout fixed that "hatred" for mutant characters.
I question the wisdom of organizing tourneys this early in the game's life. It's not even a month and everyone seems to want to go on a gold rush of sorts to be the first to organize a tournament, probably hoping to rake in cash on entry fees and get some free exposure by being the first whatever.
Good move by Epic to open access to all platforms and engines capable of hooking to their services. They could've restricted it to just their engine and forced developers to use Unreal and earn more that way.
It's a beautiful logo. Simple, yet memorable and representative of what Smash is - multiplayer and a crossover. You don't get many logos of that caliber.
The lore is good, but I'm also okay if it's simply because Kirby is Sakurai's baby. Dude has put so much time and effort into the Smash series, he deserves some leeway on stuff like this.
I'm of the notion that this game is still underrated and overlooked by many. The game design itself is sheer genius. It can be played solo, with a friend, and can appeal to a broad spectrum of gamers young and old.
@Kalmaro You can tell that he really loves his work and the dedication he puts in each entry in the series. Iwata wouldn't have created the team centered around Sakurai if Iwata himself didn't see the care Sakurai puts into Smash.
Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time are true legends. They were the first games for me that truly made controlling a character in 3D feel fluid. More so since dual analog sticks wasn't even a pipe dream back then.
P.S. I was late to the N64 party. What I had was a Playstation and only got around experiencing the N64 when I spent a vacation overseas in my cousin's place, who had the console and games.
"I’m working on one localization of a Nintendo property right now, with another likely within the next month. After that, as I mentioned, there are probably three or possibly four books being developed by Dark Horse." - I seriously hope that he's talking about localizing the Super Mario Odyssey art book. I held off on importing one from Japan since I'm still holding out hope that Dark Horse is gonna localize that. I love what they do and they don't overcharge for their books, unlike, say, Udon.
@iN5OMANiAC If I recall correctly, he was also an OG e-sports athlete (part of the US National Videogame Team - something like this, unsure of the actual name). Granted, it was more of an open-challenge, roving thing instead of organized sports back then, but Billy has proven his worth as a gamer even then.
The game was good, though granted I started gaming back when the NES was still a thing, so I'm more used to classic JRPGs and their slower pacing compared to younger gamers. I don't begrudge people not liking Octopath, though, I never really thought it would hold mass appeal. Glad to see the music is getting love, though. It's something that can transcend all gamer generations.
I'm just happy that Fortnite is raking in the cash and players now and not PUBG. I found the publisher for PUBG to be arrogant in thinking only they should have the right to make "battle-royale"-style games (hello, game concepts are not patentable, thank God) and even sued (then dropped, lol) Epic Games out of enviousness of Fortnite's bigger player base.
Missed opportunity if Nintendo US and EU doesn't follow suit. I can better appreciate using platinum points for those posters instead of digital wallpapers or something.
@Matroska Feels like Nintendo's doing it to show third-party developers that their controllers have extra functionality aside from the usual sticks and buttons. Agreed on the lack of choice at times, though. To be fair, many Nintendo games can be played with conventional controls, still.
@Heavyarms55 I think Nintendo is content with selling you mini versions of past consoles and Switch Online to make a "best-of" game collection. It might also be more profitable for them this way, too.
