Challenger #4 for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has been confirmed as SNK favourite Terry Bogard, in development now and scheduled to release this November. Terry (of Fatal Fury and King of Fighters fame) is one of SNK’s biggest characters, so it seems that Nintendo UK's website slip was accurate.
But the Direct delivered even bigger Smash news - Mr Bogard and the as-yet unknown Challenger #5 won't be the last we'll see of DLC characters in Nintendo's superstar brawler. Nintendo also confirmed that there are further DLC fighters - yes, plural - in the works beyond the five DLC Challengers slots previously planned. So even when Terry lands in November and Challenger #5 rolls around sometime after that, it seems the speculation will continue for a good while yet. Happy days!
Excited for Terry? Happy to have the DLC train keep on rolling? Let us know below with a juicy little comment.

Travis Touchdown still has a shot!
@Maulbert That's an odd way to spell Waluigi 🤔
Are you okay!? Get serious!
HEY COME ON, COME ON!!! nice pick 👌🏾
Im glad SNK made the cut, but was honestly lookin' fwd to a character like Athena Asamiya as I feel she'd fit the Smash world a bit more... maybe she'll be one of the "further DLC"
So another $25 season pass?
So $50 for 10 characters, vs 70 some including the game for $60? I see Nintendo is copying market trends.
Is female Terry in the cards, tho?
I feel bad for the person who didn't believe that a SNK character was coming, because they wanted Doomguy.
One of the spots is surely going to a new Pokemon.
@Trajan Do you prefer loot boxes? I'm glad the game keeps getting support.
Axel from Streets of Rage would have been a better, more recognisable, choice.
This Terry is far too generic; and I've personally never heard of him before~
More characters. So you're saying Doomslayer still has a chance.😁
Kinda wish they'd stop announcing fighters. I thought I was done with my Smash amiibo collection.
It's sad not a lot of people recognise Terry these days. I think it's great to have an SNK character in Smash, especially considering most of their Neo Geo games are on it.
@Trajan I didn't hear them say anything about cost.
Nintendo's getting greedy.
When will we ever have a complete smash again, with all the content included in the physical version?
...Never, that's when.
@EchoNemesis I'd rather not justify tons of DLC in a full-priced game simply with "at least there's no gambling".
@Miiamoto
Considering that Ultimate has all of the previous fighters (including previous DLC fighters), I'd say that it was already more than complete. The old "complete" smash games you're referring to don't even come close to the content that Ultimate launched with.
As a huge SNK fan, this is the moment I have been hoping for. So, so pleased to have SNK represented in Smash. "Are you OK?" I'm ecstatic.
Seeing the King of Fighters '94 intro in that trailer was all i needed to see. It was everything I wanted.
More DLCs means more chances of DOOMGUY showing up, so BRING ON
@EchoNemesis It isn't an either/or thing.
The value proposition isn't there. This is something people here complain about on other systems.
Would have wanted Haohmaru but Terry is cool too! Woo!
That trailer was hilarious though.
At this point I think random cross-company characters are to be naturally expected. SNK was always a long time rival of Capcom so once Ryu and Ken got plopped in anything was possible. I think they're being reaaally careful with their choice of female characters and so far have avoided the obvious boobage choices of Mai Shiranui or Athena Asamiya (keyword: so far) and even Chun Li. Other potential SNK line ups would be Iori Yagami, Haomaru (or anyone else from Samurai Showdown...personally I'd like Setsuna^^) or a character from KOF.
My guess is that the next 'proper' fighter will be either from Namco's Tekken series (Heihachi, Kazuya, Jin) or Soul Calibur.
As for my guess of who else could appear my list is:
Klonoa (Namco)
Morrigan (Capcom)
Ulala, from Space Channel 5 (SEGA)
Strider Hiryu (Capcom)
Waluigi (Nintendo)
Knuckles (Sega)
Anything from Monster Hunter (Capcom)
Basically at this point I'm just looking at the character appearance roster of "Project X Zone 2"...because that's where Smash Bros is going😆
@Trajan Yeah and I’d gladly pay that every year to keep the awesome content coming
Americans: Who the heck is terry?
Mexicans:
@Captain_Toad I think it's fitting considering it's probably where Sakurai got the idea for the Smash invitations. That said, I'm still pulling for Rugal to be an upcoming DLC character so they can bring the invitation envelope reference full circle.
A very meh pick for me since I don't know this guy at all but I see some people being excited over him, and I believe he does have some (Nintendo) history so I'm not mad. He looks cool so I'll try him out once he drops, but he's definitely not for me.
I don't really mind Terry getting in, even though I know virtually nothing about him. Any character is worth a shot to me!
But the Banjo content, Sans Mii costume (with remix!), and more characters coming is just...I cannot be mad, not that I really would be anyways. Hopefully Sakurai doesn't overwork himself! I noticed there wasn't a mention of new stages, so perhaps we'll get new characters from preexisting franchises! I'd main Bandana Dee Day 1.
Soooooo exited i literally screamed of exciment. My dream character in smash. Who would know. I expect to see some tortillas and angry moms spirits.
@Miiamoto you do realize that even without DLC the game literally had the content of all previous smash games ofte almost in fighters and stage alone?
And even moreso today than before since free content updates have even added modes such as offline tournaments that are still missing from the previous game on WiiU.
If anything the way I see it, more fighters updates potentially means further free content updates adding potentially even more modes for free for those who don't care about the fighters.
I think I'll have to buy Smash when Terry becomes available...
This is the very first character reveal I didnt recognize
Personally, I was hoping for Mai Shiranui, but whatever. I can dig it.
I can't believe that they really are going to make at least 5 more new characters. This is really the biggest videogame crossover of all time!
Who else can join the SSB family? Crash Bandicoot? Rayman? Shantae? Lara Croft? Professor Layton? Conker? Sora? Minecraft Steve? Spyro?
@Dev893 So many fans want Waluigi to become playable, despite the fact that he's an Assist Trophy.
Given what Sakurai said about pleasing the fans, however, I wouldn't put it past him to retool Waluigi into a playable character.
That gives me hope that my own personal #1 choice, Krystal from Star Fox, will finally become playable.
She is and has been, after all, one of the most-requested video game characters (and female video game characters) to make the roster in Smash.
Was pretty bummed about this until announcement of more fighters so not too salty looking forward to trying him!
Yes glad it's Terry and not Kyo, Terry was the original KOF.
@PBandSmelly
Terry is just a photoshopped Little Mac.
Travis Touchdown is totally going to be one of them, isn't he?
I guess I'm going to start buying the Arcade Archives Fatal Fury games. Gotta see what Terry is all about.
I'm so stocked that Terry is in. I would of loved other King of Fighters but I'll take what I can get. I wonder if female Terry will be an alt
Hopefully Kula Diamond makes an appearance in the background or even a Mii costume.
they add this nobody but no pikmin 4 announcement?
@RareFan Ryo Hazuki, Shenmue...……..
So they're supporting it 'til beyond huh?
I had knew this was the Ultimate Smash before, how ambitious!
I hope half of the alt costumes will be Genderbent Terry from the last Switch game they released. <3
So, it's Terry after all. If there's another SNK character coming along, I would say it's gotta be Mai. Since male Fatal Fury and King Of Fighters rep is here, I bet the next would be a female. Too bad Kyo was only representing King Of Fighters, if he was representing more SNK flagship games, he would be the one.
@kalosn This is the new trend fighting games are following and it started with Street Fighter V.
Basically, they put out a base game and roster, and the offer constant support with new fighters, stages, modes, and balance patches.
Namely they tie the new fighters to seasons which run alongside the current tournament season.
This helps them keep the game for fresh without having to worry about pumping out a new game every few years.
So far, Street Fighter V, Dragon Ball Fighter Z, and Tekken 7 follow this model.
Which means I am not shocked Nintendo might be looking at seasons as well for Smash Ultimate.
SNK is really trying to get heavy recognition this gen, they released NeoGeo Mini, then NeoGeo games through HAMSTER, then SNK retro collection, and now they are bringing more new games like KOFXV, the new Samurai Shodown and new Metal Slug to all platforms. They also allow their characters to guest starred in more games like Geese Howard in Tekken 7, Haohmaru in Samurai Shodown and now Terry Bogard in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. I guest if they want to do more they could easily include Rugal Berstein or Orochi in Mortal Kombat 11.
Not interested in this one.
@RareFan Now that's an interesting character idea, Lara Croft.
I'm pretty satisfied with Banjo and Piranha. And The Hero is basically the closest thing to Anime/Goku that we'll likely get. The only major inclusion left I'd say for most fans would be Sora
Per general comments, I know of Terry, but eh it seems they always throw in the main character, it'd be more interesting to throw in some side characters or just choose among the most popular characters per a series (but then again, idk, maybe Terry is popular within the SNK fighters). Per JRPG's, the main almost always uses a sword too, so there's less potential for variety.
While I'm not usually a fan of DLC, I don't mind some more fighters for smash, it does get a bit pricy, but on one hand any new Smash game would have to get re-licensing for the characters used (and hence some may not make a return), by adding them all to one game, you're able to keep them all in without the need to renegotiate contracts / pay extra licensing fees, I'd imagine. It is relatively pricey (compared to the cost of the game), so unfortunately a lot of the more casual Smash bros fans will prob just skip the new chars. I host most game days at my place, so I can get more use/value of buying the characters. I'll probably hold for more info on this second pack of fighters though, wait and see. I do appreciate that every new character so far has had an interesting and unique playstyle and moveset, which I feel should be the case with the price. If they're going to be more like an Echo fighter (i.e. potential octoling), they should probably be cheaper in cost.
@Caryslan
Yup, except Smash launched in a complete state
Now that I think about it, implementing contemporary features like seasons on SSBU could elevate things further. Let's see if they think about it down the road.
Right now I am just interested in one character. And I bought it today. BANJO KAZOOIE IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
these legend spirits are gonna be nuts
@Trajan nevermind the rest of the work put into the game. Nope, let's just base the entire cost on how many characters there are.
@DarkSim01 Yes. We already paid for the game.
I'm talking about added fighters costing nearly 50% of the cost of the game.
I could definitely see astral chains lead being in line for future dlc. It’d be a unique move set for sure with the 4 legion types. I still want more Nintendo representation tho. I’d love machrider or excitebike for an off the wall character. Maybe with season pass two we’ll get another Nintendo freebie like piranha plant.
between main characters, dlc characters and mii characters, ultimate is the biggest fighting game ever.
I jumped when the Smash invitation letter was in reach of Nakoruru!
Also great play on the King of Fighters intro!
I have respect for Terry Bogard's legacy (his first game Fatal Fury: King of Fighters was released on the SNES) and over time we got at least 46 Nintendo games starring Terry Bogard (including re-releases and ports), compared to a total of 20 Mortal Kombat releases, 16 Samurai Shodown releases, 5 Killer Instinct releases, 3 Tekken releases, and 2 Soul Calibur releases.
I like the DLC direction of Smash, you know.
You get every known character right from the start, in a brandnew 59.99 game with 100 stages and tons of modes. No one was left out, Pichu and Young Link mains can finally join in again, even Mii fans weren't left out. Heck, he made even Snake and Cloud return! Everyone's fighter is back! Nobody can cry. That on its own earns all my respect in regard to Sakurai's game design.
Every DLC fighter is going to be brandnew and adds lots of extras along with them (stage, music, spirits). And if you buy the Fighters Pass you even get 1 of the 5 fighters for free. I knew what I was getting into and I think it's worth it. The base game is so good and complete, that DLC is no problem here.
Am glad there are going to be more possible characters in the future, but this one doesn't really do much for me.
Please also add a SNK Female version skin.
How about Terry Tsurugi? Seriously though, when that SNK video started I knew it had to be Terry Bogard. Nice choice, but I’m more than happy with the included fighters.
@FengLong
I would love Streets of Rage characters in Smash!
@SKTTR I agree with all except where are you pulling 5 Killer Instincts from. There are only 3 main series games and of those only three were released on Nintendo platforms, being the SNES and Game Boy ports of the first game and the N64 port of the second.
@Trajan This is why i haven't bought Smash Bros.
I'm waiting for the Ultimate edition.
Characters that should be there already:
Kamek.
The Yoshi series still doesn't have another representative. Kamek is a prominent character that has featured in the latest Yoshi and Mario Bros. games. Come on.
Boom Boom.
Instead of nonsense like Pirahna plant, include a proper character that appeared in Mario Bros. Deluxe, and of course Mario Bros. 3. Relevant, and iconic.
Samurai Gorah.
Endless Fire Emblem sword fighters, yet F-Zero still has only one representative, with this sword wielder missing out.
Blood Falcon.
Ganondorf is slowly over time developing his own moveset and identity. Blood Falcon could be a slower more powerful version of the captain.
Octoling.
Just amazed this wasn't a costume/echo fighter on release. Would be easy to do, hugely popular series, and based on recent actions Nintendo are still trying to sell even more of Splatoon 2.
Bomberman.
Gaming icon, feels like a glaring omission. Obvious moveset. We're getting too many human characters lately as well.
Captain Toad.
Nintendo seem desperate to sell this game. Many people want actual Toad in Smash, but he already exists as a move. The solution is Captain Toad.
Sylux.
Metroid series needs more characters that aren't Samus.
Characters I think Nintendo will add:
Pauline.
We've not got a new character from Odyssey, and they seem to be pushing for her to be prominent again. I wouldn't be that keen myself.
Funky Kong.
I'd prefer another Kong, but Nintendo and Retro just seem to really like him. Could be pretty creative with his moveset as well.
Baby Bowser.
Features in yet another Yoshi game, and would be quite different to Bowser Jr. Could simply be smaller, faster, and less powerful than Bowser.
Mage Sisters.
I reckon Nintendo will ignore the clamour for Bandana Dee and go for these three (different costumes) instead. It's just what they do.
Grookey's final evolution.
Obviously we're getting a new Pokemon, and a grass starter seems most fitting to me. Being some sort of upright creature also seems apposite.
Fire Emblem Three Houses.
A character from each of the three houses. Because why not at this stage.
Pikmin 4, new character.
Think they'll want to really push this one when it comes out.
Animal Crossing new character.
Likewise, they'll want to promote this with an animal nobody asked for.
Rex.
Sakurai loves him, apparently.
Chun Li.
An iconic female character in gaming, the Street Fighter representation just isn't complete without her.
Rayman.
Nintendo and Ubisoft seem pretty close, and they seem desperate to sell Legends.
New Hat Samus.
Because they always need to add a Samus variant.
Characters that I think have an outside chance:
King Boo.
Yeah, hes pretty big, but so is Ridley. And Luigi's Mansion is on the horizon. Knowing Smash though, probably more likely to get merely 'boo'.
Goron Chief.
There's been in most 3D Zelda adventures, and would lend itself to Smash very well I think.
Knuckles.
Whilst no more Sonic characters seem likely, if they were to add more, they ought to go for one that people actually like.
Dixie Kong.
The logical choice for another Donkey Kong representative, and therefore not the Nintendo choice.
Bandana Dee.
Because people want it, and all things Kirby pervade the whole of Japan.
Skull Kid.
Seems like the ship has sailed, but remains an overwhelmingly popular choice.
Characters that should be in Smash but won't be:
Captain Syrup.
Major character in the Wario Land series. Nintendo deny that the series ever existed.
Conker.
Perhaps too awesome even to grace Smash Bros.
Wart.
The days of Nintendo taking a risk with villain characters are over.
Alolan Raichu.
The opportunity has passed, but I thought this would have been a good character that feels a little bit like both Mewtwo and Pikachu in its movements.
Peppy Hare.
Presumably he'd be slower than other Star Fox characters, and therefore likely useless. There's probably a way to make him work if Nintendo cared about the franchise, but clearly they don't.
Prince Fluff.
Would have been a cool character, being slightly different to Kirby. But now he's dead.
Great Fairy.
Apparently with Bayonetta and Zero Suit Samus, risque is OK, but with the latest manifestation of this character being absolutely gigantic, it doesn't seem especially viable right now.
Characters that I personally want:
Earthworm Jim.
A gaming icon with a pretty much ready made moveset.
B.D. Joe.
Oh just look at his lovely smile.
Pico.
Cool character from F-Zero with a gun. Also not a human sword fighter.
Magnus.
A human sword fighter. But not an emo one, a guy with a huge sword and great power. Could be like Nightmare in Soul Calibur.
Dark Matter.
Just love this guy. The best Kirby villain.
Terry isn’t my favourite but it’s great to get some SNK love as for me they are at the pinnacle of the genre.
@Trajan No announcement of Fighters Pass 2 has been made yet, so hold off on complaining about optionally forking over $25 for 5 more fighters. Who knows, maybe they'd still be included in the original Pass, making it a bigger bargain and an easier sell to Smash owners still on the edge about it.
Does any single character appear in more Switch games than Terry? This will be his 19th (or 20th if we include female Terry in SNK Heroines), if I'm not mistaken.
Fatal Fury 1-3
Fatal Fury Special
Real Bout Fatal Fury
Real Bout Fatal Fury Special
Real Bout Fatal Fury 2
Garou: Mark of the Wolves
The King of Fighters 94-2003
Super Smash Bros Ultimate
@AnnoyingFrenzy If you had enough money, you could also buy the arcade machines of Killer Instinct and Killer Instinct 2 that were published by Nintendo. They're official Nintendo releases. Some people have them.
@BionicDodo If you count all the ports as well (Wii Virtual Console, Switch eShop) Terry Bogard features in at least 46 different Nintendo releases.
@SKTTR This is his 20th just on Switch! Not even Mario can be in that many!
@BionicDodo Oh you meant on Switch only? Yeah, my fault.
Still, he was in at least in 26 more Nintendo releases before he hit the Switch with 20 games.
@Aethon Except it's not more complete is it? It's incomplete.
They are literally still making the game.
@Ludovsky How does any of that make $50 for some DLC characters any less greedy?
@Miiamoto
You are incorrect. They aren't "literally still making the game". That implies the game is currently in an unplayable state. They are simply adding more fighters to prolong the lifespan of a game, this is normal in this time and age. This isn't like EA adding in features that were originally promised as paid DLC. I understand your frustration, but saying that Smash Ultimate is incomplete is utterly ridiculous. If Ultimate didn't receive any DLC and launched the same way it did I doubt anybody would claim it's incomplete.
@SKTTR: Agreed on the greatness of the game via its comprehensive catalog, BUT, I can cry about what they did to my Luigi! Former #1 overall main man (since ‘01, mind you) is now relegated to...8th, if that? I tear up just thinking of his wretched Plunger grab and 2” tornado...
On an related ‘no one cares whom you want’ note: PLEASE, Sakurai-san, Waluigi and Skull Kid!!! Please.
