Shovel Knight has become an incredibly successful and well-loved series in its own right over the last few years, finding a natural home on Nintendo's platforms. We're sure that the team over at Yacht Club Games are beyond proud of their success, but that doesn't stop them from getting ridiculously excited at seeing their character appear in a major Nintendo release.
The team recently took to Twitch to stream some Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, when Shovel Knight - who is included in the game as an Assist Trophy - appears on screen. Things get pretty crazy as the excitement rushes through the team, but it only gets better from there. We don't want to ruin the fun (we came away from this video with huge grins on our faces) so make sure to simply enjoy the moment for yourself by watching below.
What a truly beautiful, magical moment. Congratulations Yacht Club Games, we're delighted to see Shovel Knight strutting his stuff in Smash.

I would be proud too if my little silly character became a de facto mascot for indie games and was in the biggest Nintendo game of the year.
Congrats!
Shovel Knight is such an indie success story. I love it. That said, he seems to be appearing everywhere lately. Maybe scale it back a bit, so these cameos can be a little more exciting? At this point, any crossover game is expected to have Shovel Knight. It’s lost it’s charm.
My goodness... indie developers LOVE Nintendo. I don't think there's a game developer that has affected creators more than Ninty.
I don't see what's so exciting about it...
...is what I'd say if I were a jerk! Big congratulations to these people!
I would be really excited too, especially Shovel Knight getting the final kill.
Congrats to the guys of Yacht Club Games.
Shovel Knight "series"? We haven't even got off part 1 yet, but I get it with 3 Knights getting their own complete spin-off games, so it's a one in one franchise lol
On that note, ol' Shoves' got good longevity, what is it, 4 years in the game with the original Shovel Knight with one spin-off to go? Wow. Proud of Yacht Club, good on y'all!
Not surprised. How cool would it be to see your own personal indie character come to life in one of Nintendo's biggest games of all time?
Gotta love the enthusiasm.
Well, here it is to him being a DLC character... or is this out of the question, if he is an assist? (I am new to Smash)
Aww man, this warms my heart. Shovel Knight is one of my favorite games and to see the character in Smash is a dream, I can only imagine how Yacht Club feels about it.
That’s amazing. Can’t wait for the final few Shovel Knight amiibo! (Protip: scanning the Shovel Knight amiibo into Smash gives you his spirit!)
@Lemmy_the_Koopa Assist Trophies have, in the past, not been DLC Fighters in the same game. Nintendo can do whatever they want, but it’s highly, highly unlikely.
@MH4 As I suspected. Thanks for confirming though of what was / is standard practice.
Shovel Knight Buries the Competition!
I say this all the time, but just having your charcter un smash at all, weather it be a spirit, assist trophy, otr even fighter, is pretty much the highest honor you can get as a game developer.
What a great reaction. Happy for the team. Awesome
Would have been a perfect playable character with an awesome moveset... the other knights could show up in the Final Smash.
Already has an amiibo...
What a feeling! I can only imagine how it would feel. Congrats guys.
@Lemmy_the_Koopa Assists becoming playable in the same game hasn’t been confirmed yet but you never know
I could complain about him not being playable, but the fact that everyone's favorite spade wielding crusader is here in this form must mean the world to them.
Brings joy to my heart to see them this happy, because they deserve it.
As much as I love Shovel Knight, I can't help but feel this is the peak of his game cameos.
But is he going to appear a DLC character? Shantae would be great too. They know each other for their cameo in Blaster Master Zero anyway.
I really thought he should have been a playable character.
@MeloMan Shovel Knight did get a sequle, but no one ever talks about it. It's called Shovelrune
While some people can't stop being salty because this or that character became an Assist Trophy instead of playable, these guys know that being in Smash Bros. at all is a great honor, and being in Smash Bros. as an Assist Trophy is the second best role a character can have.
@thesilverbrick not sure why you got so many downvotes considering you brought up a valid point.
@CrazyMetroid Good to know. I can’t see the downvotes on my own posts, which I think is a strange oversight. Honestly, I didn’t say anything inflammatory about the character or game itself. He just appears in every single game that has any sort of crossover element. It’s just not surprising to see Shovel Knight in anything anymore. His inclusion in Smash would have been far more exciting if he hadn’t already appeared in a dozen games besides his own already.
@thesilverbrick I'm pretty sure this is the first non-indie game appearance, however. Plus, to my own sensibilities, Shovel Knight found a place among NES games as far as feeling goes, so I love seeing it sort of get things like amiibo and other inclusions that sort of play into that idea that it is a "lost" NES game. It's a bit silly, but Smash plays right into that for me.
You're not wrong, though. The inclusion in other games does diminish each new appearance a bit.
I am eagerly awaiting the final DLC to drop on Shovel Knight and the amiibo triple pack which I find to be an amazing addition to my amiibo collection they did such a spectacular job with the amiibo for Shovel Knight Cant wait to see what the new three pack unlocks with all that stated I would love a new game featuring Shovel Knight I think it is definitely time for him to be the star of his own show once again I do like his assist trophy in Smash Bros it's one of my favorite.
I forgot that he was in this game. All I can say is, congrats Yacht Games. It must feel great to have your small, indie character be in a popular game series like this.
@Lemmy_the_Koopa He is an assist trophy in smash... That being said Little Mac was formerly an assist trophy in Brawl but was then made into a playable character. So maybe we could get the other Knights as DLC fighters or maybe even other Indie fighters (personally voting for Gunvolt)!
That's so awesome. Love shovel knight and his crew. Just wish I had smash bros so I can see it first hand. Then again, the last two shovel knight dlc's will do also!
Awww, how could anyone not love these guys? <3
Congrats to YCG!
@thesilverbrick Well, shovel knight being in ssb is actually befitting.
@Shadowmoon522 I never said it wasn’t. I’m glad to see him here. I love Shovel Knight, and I’m thrilled the IP has been as successful as it has. I’m simply saying that this cameo isn’t as exciting as it could have been if he hadn’t already appeared in a dozen crossover games before Smash.
I'd probably have the same reaction if a hypothetical character I created ends up in a Smash game. Happy for these guys, they made a hell of a game.
