One of the standout arcade racers on the Nintendo Switch would have to be Horizon Chase Turbo - a love letter to retro racers of the past featuring a modern lick of paint. If you've been craving more racing action after the all the expansions, you're in luck.
Brazillian developer Aquiris has today announced a sequel to its award-winning game Horizon Chase. Horizon Chase 2 invites players to race around the world across all sorts of modes, including local and online multiplayer. It's coming exclusively to Apple Arcade on 9th September and will follow with a "PC and consoles" release in 2023. Exact platforms have not been specified just yet, but it'll likely come to Switch.
Players will be able to race across 55 tracks in five countries while unlocking 10 different cars. There'll be all sorts of landscape and different weather effects, enhanced with a soundtrack by the Top Gear video game composer Barry Leitch.
If that wasn't enough, you'll also be able to customise your car - with new cosmetic items and stat upgrades. And you can play every game mode in online chases with your friends - assembling a crew with other players to progress together or compete head-to-head.
Last but not least, Horizon Chase 2 is described as being a game in "constant evolution" - with dynamic "evergreen events" that promise to keep players coming back with major updates, including a Playground Mode (offering new challenges every two days) and a Tournament Mode featuring modified races from World Tour. Both can be played solo or in groups of four.

Local wireless play yes or no?
@sixrings Local and online multiplayer has been confirmed.
Ooooh that's exciting. It looks a bit more demanding than the first one so I sort of hope it doesn't come to Switch, save it for Switch 2
HOOOLY **** I never even dreamt of a Horizon Chase 2 because the first one is so damn good and they just kept adding to it. But that looks incredible. I’ll dabble in it on Apple Arcade, but it is definitely near the top of my most anticipated list for 2023. That’s one of the best announcements I’ve seen all year.
I still want to be able to play the Senna dlc with my physical version 😟
55 tracks in 5 countries? Come on, spread them across 30 countries!
Ah, so there's a sequel. Good on them.
I just couldn't handle the first game as the fast 2d repeating up down and all around graphics me dizzy after a while. So the 3d graphics in the second game could help.
Still playing the first game on my xbox series, switch, and phone, can't wait for this sequel 😃
I really wish it had cross-save, I already bought the game 3 times, it will be cool to play it on phone outside, on switch when I'm home, and last, continue it on my xbox at my room.
So happy to see this. Definite day 1 purchase on PS4.
First game was phenomenal but the lack of at least local multiplayer was frustrating. Beautiful art, music, and fun drive through the world.
I will check it out as soon as it comes to anything and everything other than Apple Arcade...
Sweet, I can't wait. I guess this means, no more DLC for the first one then.
Online multiplayer. Yes... Finally.
The single BEST news this year.
Horizon Chase is one of the best games this generation.
I have it on Switch and Steam
I have:
My wife:
We are playing the new Adventure Mode (170 tracks...FREE DLC)
Horizon Chase 2 is a Dream! And you can bet..Will be so many DLCs...free and paid (cheap!).
This game is fantastic! Online multiplayer? I´ll buy on steam for online / steam deck..so i don´t know if i´ll buy it for switch..depends of my friends....(to play online) and depends the switch online quality.
Yessssss!!! Can’t wait!! I was hoping for a follow up!! Day 1 😊
Love the first, so I have high hopes for this. The Outrun-style alternate routes has my interest piqued, that might have been in the first one but I only recall circuits. It also makes me really mad that Outrun 2 SP/ Coast 2 Coast hasn't had a modern port because it is literally the best game in this style and everyone is sleeping on it.
@AshFoxX Yep Sega need to edit the cars just enough to get past Ferrari licensing and release a remaster or just make a new one.
One of the best games ever. I still play it most days on my Odin.
Gear Shifting and Drifting.
Add manual and drift mechanics to this game, and it will be a perfect sequel.
Alberobello
I never thought I would see it in a game!
Horizon Turbo chase is probably my favourite racing game on switch. Wish Mario Kart had a single player mode as good as this!
Wow looks fantastic, day one buy for sure.
@UltraZelda64 ya I don’t need Apple Arcade when I already got switch and PS4, and I want to buy PS5 if I can get one at normal price.
Graphics certainly looked to be turned up a notch on the first. 45+hours on Switch and 15 plus on Xbox for the first game so I'm looking forward to this...
I'd love it if they did a Le Mans style game like the Senna one.
Apple should make a console already.
I think that the art style is not as good as the first game... They added too many effects and it looks rather generic compared to the lovely style they created inTurbo.
However, I will pick this one eventually because I really loved Turbo.
Really looking forward to this, hope the aggravating stutter from the original is gone though.
Loved the original, but I refuse to support Apple Arcade. Let me buy the individual titles and I'm set, but subscribing just to borrow them is ultra lame
@Liam_Doolan local wireless play is when people can connect their systems together without online and play together.
@SoulChimera I've never really understood the Ferrari licensing issue. Surely, as a gaming icon, OutRun featuring Ferraris is beneficial to Ferrari.
As for Horizon Chase... the first one has never particularly hooked me for some reason that I either haven't identified or have just forgotten because it's been that long since I played it.
I think part of it is the scoring/collectibles aspect to it. In my racing games I generally just want to race and not be distracted by whether I've picked up some track-based icons along the way.
@sixrings To clarify, this is all that was in the PR about multiplayer:
"Gamers from all ages will enjoy the fast-paced and accessible gameplay supporting online and local multiplayer modes"
Guess we'll learn more at a later date.
I really enjoyed the first one, but I'm not sure about all these live service events, where they randomly generate missions every few days. They got really repetitive in Forza Horizon, I'd prefer a normal career mode and just replay that if I liked the game enough.
@JoeSooper There is something seriously wrong if this can't run on a Switch and needs a Switch 2.
@BulkSlash Don´t you worry...the first Horizon Chase Turbo World Tour mode (the first "carrer mode") is HUGE.....109 tracks, second missions (get all coins...the only mode you need to get the coins to 100%...but i love it)....30+ cars to unlock......so...you have Resistance Mode (a HUGE tournament + survival)...so you have the 30+ Grand Prix (championship like Mario Kart)...so you have the Adventure Mode free DLC (170+ racings)...so you have Ayrton Senna Carrer Mode....(one of the best DLCs ever)...so you have Summer Vibes (small cheap DLC but you get the best car of the game)...so you have another free DLC....for newbies....for multiplayer game....
And all game mode you can play 4 players split screen coop and/or competitive!!!!!!!!
Much more content than Mario Kart 8.
I love to play Mario Kart 8 battle mode, but for racing, i prefer Horizon Chase...much more fun here!
On Switch version the game stutters sometimes.....it does not happens on Steam......so...i hope the Horizon Chase 2 be good on Switch! And now...with Steam Deck...i think i´ll buy it on Steam.....but i´d love play it on Switch too!
@ArcticEcho I'm sure it can run on Switch, but stable 60fps in both single player and local multiplayer would be nice. Even the first Horizon Chase doesn't do that on Switch.
@Rykdrew "Much more content than Mario Kart 8" And I thought Mario Kart 8 was massive! 😂
@JoeSooper I can't tell, it just looks like every other low-poly game.
@BulkSlash
Yes
And I paid only $9 on Switch and $4,90 on Steam ! It´s a steal!
And YES..Mario Kart 8 is MASSIVE!
Positives (for me):
-They ditched the Outrun style backgrounds and went with full 3D environments.
Negatives (for me):
None
@ChromaticDracula
The title of this article literally says its coming to consoles in 2023. It’s just coming to Apple Arcade 1st next month.
@MeatSauce lol that’s what I get for leaving a comment on an article I “read” as I was heading out on lunch from work. I need to sloooow down and read haha
@Tasuki tbf the last bit was huge and awesome
@ChromaticDracula what i love is that they did go with a more detailed look but really still captured the same vibe the original style was going for, it looks awesome
@ChromaticDracula
lol I remember back in february of last year when Tony Hawk was announced for switch I was convinced it was out that day when no release date was mentioned in the article. I could blame it on being in between appointments on a busy day but in reality sometimes I just don’t read good.
This just pisses me off... Apple arcade first? Sheesh.
Dumb question? How on earth can this have be played well on a phone touch screen?
@HIGHscores85 They have fixed that now. Just go to dlc from in game and it will take you to the card version dlc 👍
@MewSan886
Thank you man, I'll check it out
Instant buy. I'm still playing the original, it's so good.
@JoeSooper don’t see why you’d think this game is too graphically demanding for Switch. There’s already more graphically demanding, larger games than this on Switch already. It’s not like they switched to Forza Horizon-style graphics. It’s still got that cartoony-style except more 3D
