During the 2022 Tokyo Game Show today, the winners of the Japan Game Awards were announced. One winner, in particular, that seems to have people talking on social media is the 2021 Switch title Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl.
Not only did it take out the 'best sales award' but it was also recognised as the best Japanese game release globally. While the sales award isn't all that surprising, plenty of trainers online are seemingly confused (and a bit frustrated) as to how the remakes took out the 'global' award.
Here's how some Pokémon fans are reacting to the latest news online:
Pokémon Legends: Arceus ended up taking out an 'award for excellence', Kirby also got some love, and Bandai Namco's hit Elden Ring won the main award. Here's the rundown (via NintendoSoup):
- Grand Prize
・ELDEN RING
- Excellence Award
・Resident Evil Village
・Sky Children Spinning the Stars
・Tales of ARISE
・LOST JUDGMENT: Unjudged Memories
・Final Fantasy XIV: Akatsuki Finale
・Pokémon Legends: Arceus

I far enjoyed brillant diamond more than arceus. So no suprise here from me
I mean, I didn’t hate bdsp like many did, but best of the year?
I don’t quite understand.
I think it’s crap. These were, easily, the least inspired remakes we’ve had yet. While the expansion of the underground was excellent, every single other part of the game was not only barely even on par with the originals, they were actually a massive step down from Platinum since they removed it’s updates and changes that enormously improved the Sinnoh experience. All compounded by turning the entire game visually into a not-Funko-Pop toy commercial, without even attempting to justify it by putting out some trainer Pops or cheap figures or anything at all. Just one bad decision after another in so many facets of these remakes.
Either this is internal politics at work, or it’s rewarding exactly the kind of thing we don’t want to see from the future of Pokémon, remakes and mainline alike.
These games don't really deserve the hate they got. Yes, they were practically straight up ports with minor QOL improvements but it was nice to go back to classic Pokemon for once that's not Gen 1. Gen 4 is really the last "classic" generation.
I figure these games were really more or less and obligation from the Pokemon Company and Nintendo to make a true remake. These games alongside Arceus were probably pitched as a single idea before the broke off into their own separate projects, and really for the better.
I mean I enjoyed them but they did not deserve to win this and this is coming from a guy that tends to ignore any drama centered around Pokèmon games. Pokèmon Legends Arceus stomps all over those games.
Not the best Pokemon remakes compare to Fire Red and Leaf Green as well as Heart Gold and Soul Silver but still decent ones.
So I guess the awards were based on sales numbers probably powered by nostalgia? Whatever, but I hope this doesn't set the precedent for a possible Gen-V remake to look like a mobile game port.
Personally, I'd like a future remake to just go back to 2D sprites, with battle animations playing out like the older Super Robot Wars games. A man can dream.
I don't really get the criteria for these awards. Also, giving an award for selling the most just seems a bit redundant. That already gives you bragging rights without someone handing you a trophy for it. I did like that BDSP tried to give us a taste of the retro pokemon style, though if they want to go all in and make a new pixel-art game, that'd be even better.
@Nanoline52 The justification is that that's what the character sprites looked like in the originals. The Let's Go character models were a lot weirder by comparison.
I remember back when everyone was begging for Diamond and Pearl remakes, and I kept seeing on the internet that the original games were some of the worst Pokémon games, I predicted everyone would hate it… guess I was right
The biggest sin of these awful releases was that they were released in an unfinished state. The opening cinematic wasn't even on the cart FFS (as well as the updated music!), and the cinematics that were patched in are heavily compressed and look absolutely embarrassing on the Switch's smaller screen, let alone on a TV.
I can forgive its other shortcomings, but BDSP is the lowest bar that TPCi have set for themselves yet, and while I have been buying every main series Pokémon game from Emerald onward, TPCi have been testing the extent of my patience (and many others, I am sure), and are treading on thin ice.
In before the pitchforks.
We have it pretty good if this is an outrage.
@Ocaz Just what I was thinking.
Yes, yes, let the butthurt move through you! Mwahaha your nerd tears are delicious!
We’re outsiders looking in on a bubble. More than likely it really was the best selling game considering the only real competition the game had in Japan would’ve been Elden Ring. Global Award… that I’m not so sure about. It really depends on what the criteria were to win, which at the end of the day Pokemon is a wildly successful franchise and so was Elden Ring in terms of sales. May have boiled down to which sold better in Japan or appealed to the larger audience. Pokémon being rated E definitely has a broader reach.
I hate this fanbase sometimes.
I love this remake, fells so nostalgic every time.
Yep, please, give the reward to the under baked remake, I would loveeeee them to get the impression to be more half ass about their remakes
But not sarcastically, I would get gen 5 remake at launch even if it was just as bad as BDSP
Reward for what? LOL
The games are literally a downgrade from the originals in everyway... at least ORAS carried over gen 6 mechanics, expanded post game, expanded the dex for X/Y, was bank compatible day 1, added more megas actually, added more features like flying and the islands, actually had online matchmaking battle spot...
gen 4 remakes were literal copy and pasted without any of platinums improvements, had tons of bugs, nothing new introduced with the only updated mechanic being the underground, is 20 more dollars than the originals, requires NSO online unlike the originals (and yes, you actually CAN still play the originals online with some DNS tricks), and carried over the 20 minute timer everyone hates so you can't even enjoy the online either... even their pokemon transferring system only just recently came out when we're at the end of generation 8 in 2 months...
Sales is not rewardable... you don't reward mcdonalds because it sells we all know the quality of the food, this does not deserve a reward with the quality they gave us especially when a lot buy it for the sake of seeing the controversy themselves, twitter rants are the best form of advertising you can get.
These games have no twitch and youtube content creators now... there's maybe 2 well known ones but what they delivered isn't even worth talking about let alone playing. I remember when pokemon had a big twitch and youtube community and it's just dead right now with how much they kill content in these games.
Dude I loved that game, but, a global award? Am I reading that right?
Imagine a game with 30 fps winning anything.
It honestly wasn’t surprising if you looked at the reception beyond the hardcore Pokémon community. They were not the ones complaining about “forced” Exp share and enjoyed the game regardless as crazy as that sounds
The chibi aesthetic actually appealed to the majority and end of the day it was still a nostalgia traditional mainline formula Pokemon game that appealed to more people unlike Arc that played more like its own thing and appealed to less people in comparison
@Ironcore imagine thinking bigger FPS = auto better game. There are plenty of trash 60 FPS games out there lol
Was this the only japanese developed game for that year? Otherwise I can only imagine how much money changed hands this time..
It's not award worthy by any means but I enjoyed my time with BDSP.
A 7/10 experience that was a nice walk through memory lane and kept me busy over Xmas break while I was self isolating.
Honestly, I think spending more money on Pokemon Platinum should've been the option I chose in the beginning.
Now...I dread of what degradations that the "possible" Gen 5 remakes will suffer in the far future...
You guys that played gens 1-3 first were so fortunate with your remakes! At least we have those to play but if only they haven’t given in to cheaper remakes for the last 2 more “2d” gens
I will never understand why the pokemon community is so toxic. It was very clear from the start that while legends was intended as a remake bdsp was a remaster. This was supposed to please both purist and people wanting something new. Gamefreak is damned if they do and damned if they dont.
Even the people who loved the game and have big nostalgia goggles on at least realise we deserve better than this, right? That it’s the furthest from award-worthy, right? I wouldn’t give any of the pokemon games currently such an award but at least Arceus innovated and breathed some new life into how stale this franchise had become. I skipped these because these remakes are missing features that Platinum had on the DS… so these weren’t definitive on release. They’re a rather sad copy-paste job with no love or passion to be seen. If I wanted to play the exact same game again but now with chibi… then I just go play the DS version.
I’m sure plenty of people loved it for valid reasons regardless of complaints, but a global award? That’s boss baby winning an oscar levels of undeserved. Even the minimum was apparently too good with how it was released unfinished and then patched to be presentable. At least they couldn’t suck the fun out of the experience: a copy and paste of diamond/pearl is still a fun game because it had effort put into the DS release… put it on the switch virtual console (if we had one) and you’d not notice a difference compared to the remake, probably. Everyone who enjoyed the game doesn’t have to suddenly feel bad or defend themselves, but an award is definitely a huge stretch.
for me, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are the video game representation of "I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed."
@Takoda BD/SP are definitely, as you said, a copy paste experience. Well, if nothing else they at least highlight how much Arceus and Scarlet/Violet represent steps forward for the series, eh?
i guess I’m the only one that’s wants gen 5 remakes now since I haven’t played them.
Also at least I’m not the only one that like BDSP.
And the drama with these titles continues…
Whatever, I enjoyed my time with them.
Even the fact that this slap in the face for fans is being recognized for sales is too much for me, let alone the quality of the product itself
@Arawn93 faster fps (once the minimum of 60 has been met) does not necessarily mean a better game but a slower fps does mean a worse game.
Pokemon shining Pearl was the first pokemon game i ever bought (And i've been buying them since Red) that i never could bring myself to finish, everything was just so... meh, all the way through, and after getting badge #8 i just stopped slogging through it.
I personally wouldn't "Award" those games a bent nickel, TBH.
Back in my day pokémon games used to be good!!! 😤
.....
I feel old. lol
i worried Pokémon Company/Game Freak is gonna destroy my favorite gen(gen 5) after they done with the remakes of gen 4.
People do not agree.......on here............what a shocker.
I aboslutely loved the BDSP games. Sure not as good as Legends Arceus, but still a very solid game.
This isn't about liking this game or not, this is about getting the best award.. which doesn't make any sense and disrespecting actual studios that make much better games.
I thought it was a decent game, the mining/underground dungeons were enjoyable and it was faithful to the original as possible which was their aim.
And surely people ain't complaining about the art style? Yet the same people get excited about live a live and octopath traveler etc for a similar price.
@Giancarlothomaz Pokemon company/Gamefreak had nothing to do with the remaster of Diamond and Pearl. It was ILCA.
People crying in the comment section is hilarious. It's almost like they want everyone to have the same opinion as them...
Ah, more Twitter drama to bring clicks.
@Ironcore 30fps is trash for fast paced action games but Pokemon doesn't need to be 60fps. I'd rather have an incredible game at 30fps than a crap game at 60fps. Fps doesn't matter if the game is amazing.
Elden Ring should've won.
Played Brilliant Diamond, and it frustrated me like no other game has. Really slow menus, horrible collision and graphics.
I give it my personal award "Most money made for least effort while exploiting a popular brand name and its fanbase"
So I looked into this, apparently these games were chosen by public vote. Given that BDSP also won best sales award that would also explain why they won best Japanese product.
"The 'Global Award' will be presented for both the Japanese title and foreign title most highly appraised overseas" according to the awards' website. So I guess it just got the highest number of votes then as Jireland92 said.
Either way, there are more deserving games that should have won rather than the buggy and unfinished mess that BDSP was.
@Miu
... According to YOU, maybe.
@prismt Uhhh, you missed a pretty key feature in the game if that's what you think.
I do understand people their frustation, I liked the remakes enough (more then Arceus) but fact is that BDSP remakes are the most lazy Pokémon ones out there.
Fire Red and Leaf Green added new Pokémon and brand new areas, Heart Gold and Soul Silver added a ton of stuff Kanto was missing in the originals, beautiful graphics, new areas and new Pokémon (list is even longer) and ORAS added new islands, ton of Pokémon and QoL impovements and a post game (that list is also longer)
What did BDSP add? Nothing (not even a different Dex compared to the original), it made the Underground more fun, changed Pal Park because they had to and they called it a day.
It's that DP were solid games on their own, but it was the most bare bones main Pokémon remake ever, even if I still had fun with it.
Rant: in BDSP at night most houses have not lights on on the outside, it looks very off because of that.
Rant over
I do hope the Black and White remakes follow the old formula, I don't want barebone remakes like BDSP anymore.
These games were fine. Nothing more. Rushed, but playable. Lacking in new content. Certainly not deserving of any awards.
Can we also talk about how the games aren’t finished? Deoxys and Celebi are not in the games yet!
@NinjaNicky it means that when moving left or right on the screen it shows intense ghosting and double of everything. For me, thats an unplayable mess. Sub 60 is fine if its a chess game or something. I play my digimon tamagotchi which runs at 12fps ffs and its amazing.
One of my personal favourites from last year.....that absolutely should not have won this. Not much you can do about it I suppose, though those Quote Retweets are absolutely brutal (Mario Kart Oui is ANGRY). It's a matter of waiting for Gen 5 to roll around now to see whether or not this style of remake is going to stick because that's a generation I am far more invested in than 4, being my first ever. If we get Legends Unova alongside it though, everything will be more than grand.
I find it offensive mainly with Pokemon Legends Arceus that was placed in January, without DLCs and with Marketing half done.
In addition to BD/SP being released incomplete, depending on a huge update.
I don’t have a problem with them winning these awards. I too looked BDSP more than Arceus, not to detract from that game.
I’m also hoping for a Gen 5 remake, as it’s my favorite Gen:)
Gen 4 remakes had the biggest amount of hype I have ever seen from the Pokémon community, and it ended up being the most divisive when they showcased and released it. However, given the lineup of 2021, it honestly is quite impressive out of a few select titles. The only other game that could compare is Metroid Dread. I might be forgetting something else, but Metroid Dread felt the most important.
This game was only fun due to the glitches so I am not sure why everyone keeps making fun of them/complaining about them. Take them away and you are left with incredibly regressive grind that GameFreak has tried to reduce since Generation 5. ILCA was a poor choice for the remakes and I have played way better (Japanese) games on the Switch in 2021 so I don't really feel like these deserve any award. And I am saying that as a massive Pokemon fanboy.
@Ryu_Niiyama I don't have any pitchforks, but I've got some cool looking normal forks. Will that work?
@TheBigK lol
Gotta be honest, I completely forgot that these games even came out.
I enjoyed my time with BDSP just fine, but I think the game was simply ok, nothing special.
Now, what is a "Global award"? They gave Excellence Award to many great games, including Legends Arceus. So, again, what is a Global Award? Was it well received in Japan as it was outside? We know LA didn't achieve the same sales number
I mean... it was a bare minimum remake that lacked the charm of earlier remakes and I only borrowed it from the library for free. But best game award? Why? How?
These are the awards Sakurai mentioned in his latest video. He said they go to a public vote so this is legitimately what the Japanese public think.
This isn't pre-approved Gaming journalist butt-buddies handing a single game 7 awards like TLOU2. So I think some of you should pause to consider whether your outrage over this actually makes sense when it's a better system than we have.
@Tempestryke as long as you hold up your pinky when using the forks.
@Ryu_Niiyama * pinky up * There, now it's a civilized mob.
It’s just an award. It doesn’t retcon how much anyone enjoyed or didn’t enjoy BDSP. There’s really no controversy here and the debates seem pointless. 🤷🏽♂️
@Nanoline52 tbf ALL major entertainment awards are in a major way about industry politics. ALL of them in EVERY field of entertainment.
The games weren't award worthy. They weren't bad by any means, but when you blatantly ignore massive improvements made in an third version (AKA Platinum) 14 years ago, they're doomed to be meh. 'Sticking to the originals' is only a good idea when the originals weren't average, and the original Diamond & Pearl were super basic and average.
I’m p sure ILCA won’t be making any other Pokémon game considering Bamco bought them for their all-star initiative or whatever it is
So apparently the Japan Game Awards follows the Japanese fiscal year: April 1 - March 31. It's a little different for each country; by comparison the British fiscal year is April 6 - April 5.
As for BDSP winning the Japan Global Award, it certainly isn't my pick but I mostly spent 2021 playing remakes and ports so I doubt my choice would be any more popular. I actually find the winner of the Overseas Global Award to be far more undeserving. There were so many great non-Japanese games last year, so for yet another Call of Duty game to win is disappointing.
@Ironcore why is 60 the arbitrary “minimum” now? Why isn’t it 120 or higher? Lol.
Last I checked 30 was plenty playable and I would rather have locked 30 then 60 with dipping frames everywhere if we are going with that dumb argument logic.
@Miu except that is a moot point. Everyone is gonna disagree on who gets “best award” regardless. I bet I’ll disagree what game you decide should have won the award instead and that is just one person.
@TMG44 Nah. Which proves my earlier point
In prior post.

@Araquanid @Rayquaza2510 Not everything about them is that lazy or bad. They improved the graphics and the Underground. They do include generational updates like the Fairy type, additional attacks, items, Abilities, etc.
Best of all. they used the updated mechanic of Ride Pokémon to replace those nasty HMs, which I think all by itself makes them an overall improvement compared to at least the original Diamond and Pearl games.
@ketrac
Something is wrong with your Switch, because Pokemon Brilliant Diamond worked just fine for me
@BulbasaurusRex previous remakes did same type of smaller QoL stuff too and added extra content above it.
BDSP didn't do the latter, and again I like BDSP because I like DPP, but I stand by what I said that the remakes are lazy comapred to previous ones.
P.S. people over react with HMs
Why do people care so much what other people think of their games? My kid and I shared a great time together wrecking up the Pokemon champion with our Infernape and our Dialga, and that's all that matters.
Lol there's my Kirby tweet about the game winning mentioned in the middle of a middle of a Pokemon article.
@Rayquaza2510 Yes, they are lazy remakes, but you said they added nothing, which is just not true.
No, there is no overreacting with just how much better Ride Pokémon are compared to the archaic HM mechanic. That was a massive improvement, especially since Gen 4 is along with Gen 3 one of the two worst generations for HM abuse.
@ketrac that is an award I can support for BDSP to get!! Let's make our razzies for videogames
I wonder how would that turn out if it was just as easy to return games for Switch as it is on Steam.
Games awards don’t really mean anything and are often very skewed anyway. Don’t worry about it, nobody will know these as “the award winning Pokemon games”, no they will forever be referred to as “Diamond and Pearl remakes” which is what they are.
Enjoy the game for what it is, or don’t and let others enjoy it. It’s not spewing hate speech or anything so it’s doing no harm and needs no more thought.
@KnightsTemplar did you play either of those games?
@GhostDaddy well i woudnt comment if i didnt. I legit liked dimond better than arceus. Its was better mechanically and i found it extremely fun. I cant get into arceus but i admit it is also fun but in smaller sample peices.
@KnightsTemplar Lol screw originality, am I right?
/S
@RobynAlecksys What is a "real fan" in your opinion. Someone who never critiques TPC and willingly accepts regurgitated content?
