Re: Editorial: From Metroid: Other M to Star Fox Zero, the Awkward Experimentation With Beloved Franchises

Zibene999

@Michael_JF
I encourage you to read "Mother, May I See Other M" if you want to know why people disliked it's story, but I'll outline a few big reasons.

It introduced two major plot points that never concluded. More than half the reasons you as a player are doing the things you are doing in the game were thrown away instead of resolving and maybe adding character development. I mean The Deleter and the Ridley subplot, which were thrown away like yesterday's garbage.

Plots usually work like this: Intro/Start - Conflict - Resolution. Neither of them concluded. spoilers Ridley was defeated by a bigger monster in a small cutscene, preventing Samus from gaining any character development by facing them, or even do anything. The Deleter was a faceless red shirt who's death was hardly mentioned. Even though these take up a huge portion of the game's plot, they were disposed of and ultimately handled terribly.

It awkwardly portrayed the relationship between Adam and Samus, causing much debate in the fanbase. I chalk it up to bad writing and translation, myself.

The 'final boss' (I say that but the player literally never fights them), came out of nowhere and was explained by a large infodump at the end instead of throughout the story.

And it completely changed key, famous moments of the Metroid series, as an example, the infamous Super Metroid Mother Brain final boss battle, where the scene was very much a different beast in Other M than it was in Super Metroid, directly contradicting the beloved SNES title's version.

The game had bad sales. It's performance was, in a commercial sense, extremely poor. Reggie mentioned they'd have to look into why, and hopefully they've done that.

I will mention I liked the combat, and the graphics, and would love to see more Metroid games with Other M's graphical capabilities.

Re: Editorial: From Metroid: Other M to Star Fox Zero, the Awkward Experimentation With Beloved Franchises

Zibene999

@RIC616 @RoomB31 @ThomasBW84
Why Other M is a terrible game has already been thoroughly investigated. The article "Mother, May I See Other M" on TVTropes is the most complete and detailed essay on the game, going through every part of the game and explaining exactly why that specific part was bad or could have been done better.

Every Metroid fan owes it to themselves to read it with an open mind and come to a conclusion based on the facts. The essay has never been sufficiently challenged ever, and effectively proves it's case.

All that said, I personally liked parts of Other M myself, though mostly the gameplay.

Re: Video: Shigeru Miyamoto Reflects on His Days Working on Pokémon

Zibene999

@Gorlokk
It's only widely agreed that Skyward Sword's controls were extremely finnicky at times. It is not agreed on by many that it made the game unplayable, only the vocal minority, many of whom were Nintendo haters, so I mean..

Anyway, was cool hearing about Miyamoto's contributions to Pokemon. Made me reconsider the Link Cable. I only borrowed one for a couple of trades, so I kind of mostly ignored it.

Re: Talking Point: The Great Star Fox Zero Controls Debate Highlights Important Lessons

Zibene999

@Kirk
You know, I might have misunderstood you. You do have a point that, when it came to the Wii library, there were scattered gems in an awful lot of junk. However, I wouldn't give you 99%, there were still a ton of great games on the Wii.

I could list several of them, like Metroid Prime 3, Trauma Center: Second Opinion, Boom Blox (the latter two both fun games by the way), both Kirby entries, Radiant Dawn, the Super Mario Galaxy games, Skyward Sword, the surprisingly fun World of Goo, Sin and Punishment, Okami, Epic Mickey, Elebits, Donkey Kong Country Returns, and Punch Out!! are all games that I've personally played that had great motion controls.

I will give you that there is a bunch of junk though.

Re: Weirdness: The NES Zapper Just Became Much Deadlier

Zibene999

@sonicmeerkat Yeah, it's sad they ruined a good Zapper to make something like a gun. They did a decent job, though I wouldn't personally carry a gun with me. I do have strong feelings about guns, however, I refuse to rise to the bait provided by NintendoLife.

I can't see any reason this was reported on besides to start a flame war in the comments. I'm really trying to consider whether I should keep coming to NintendoLife.. sigh
Even if I might agree with the lean this article seems to have, it's quite shameful in my opinion.

Re: Talking Point: The Great Star Fox Zero Controls Debate Highlights Important Lessons

Zibene999

@samuelvictor
Just wanted to say I really enjoyed reading your comment.
I had a similar experience back when I first started gaming on the SNES, though I only really got into video games with the release of the Dreamcast and 64.

I'm sure the controls will be fine. At worst it'll just be Skyward Sword all over again, a game where a lot of people didn't mind the controls, and a lot of people did. The game looks fantastic in my opinion, though.

Re: Talking Point: The Great Star Fox Zero Controls Debate Highlights Important Lessons

Zibene999

@happylittlepigs
Yeah, I have to agree with you there.
I love Skyward Sword (played it three times!) and had no problems with the actual controls themselves, but all the calibrating is not fun at all! And I was using the WiiMote Plus (the neat LoZ Gold one), that came with the game, too. :/

The way I got that is actually a really nice story about a great manager who especially reserved a copy for us when we missed the first shipment in the holiday rush, but that's another thing, haha.. (I wish more gamers would treat game retail employees better, I've worked in retail and it's no picnic!)

So I have a lot of great memories of Skyward Sword, but the calibrations! Yikes!

@Kirk
Forgetting about everything else, I can't really take what you're saying seriously after you said '99% of Wii games had clunky controls', when it's praised as the most accessible console.
But I'm not really up to debating anything, I don't really care. I'm going to buy Star Fox Zero when it comes out regardless.

Re: Gallery: Gawk At 3DS Screens for Zero Time Dilemma

Zibene999

The quality is pretty much what I expected. I really love the Vita's clean, HD-like visuals, but I'm still getting this on 3DS.

@gcunit
Yeah, it tells you the names of the rooms in a little slide before you enter through the door. The PEC in particular is announced as such by the characters when you enter it. They explicitly talk about how it is the PEC room and what PEC stands for right when you get in.

The only trouble we had with VLR was the dice puzzle. Ugh, crashing. But we got through it eventually. It's an amazing game in an amazing series, for sure.

Re: The Ace Attorney Anime Series is Waiting For You On Crunchyroll

Zibene999

@Rei Nah, I buy the anime I watch most of the time. That's my problem with CR, actually. :/
Don't get me wrong, I do it on purpose specifically to CR. It's not about justification. I just have it out for them specifically.

My biggest issue is supporting the anime industry, which I don't feel CR is doing, rather harming it. They won't release their numbers though, so who knows? Maybe I'm wrong. But they are keeping companies like Manga Entertainment and Funimation from licensing anime.

But I'm not telling anyone to do anything; feel free to watch wherever you want. I'll continue buying and importing anime, you can stream it and watch however you want or buy it etc, no problems from me. It was just a little reminder of the past.

I guess I did let my dislike of CR get the best of me though, lol. Didn't mean to take it out on NL. Sorry about that.

The AA anime is decent, but I wonder if they'll continue through all three games or just one?

Re: The Ace Attorney Anime Series is Waiting For You On Crunchyroll

Zibene999

@TheAceofMystery @Rei
Why not? Crunchyroll did it for a long time. Those conniving thieves deserve every ounce of justice they can get, as people who have been part of the anime community for a very long time know.

I'll quote someone who said it better than me:
"1. They were actual thieves, earning profit from streaming anime illegally. Most of the anime community follows fansubs of unlicensed series, where a free translation service is provided for sharing a series among fellow fans. The DVDRip community is separate from the fansubbers, and even then the rippers usually encourage financially supporting series you like.

2. CR not only made money off stealing shows, they stole fansubs and made money off them, claiming the stolen fansubs as their own without even bothering to strip the subber tags. CR made money from stealing shows, which is anathema to everything the anime community follows.

3. CR was a ripoff, streaming crappy quality video as they committed the above offenses. So not only was it morally offensive, they didn't even have the decency to do a good job of it."

"5. The thieves converted to "legal" - i.e. still trying to rip people off to make money off anime that would have been shared freely otherwise

6. They don't publish DVDs, so anything they license is dead in the water in terms of anime collections. DVDs have been the traditional route of non-Japanese fans financially supporting anime they enjoy, so this also interferes with that.

7. Their quality is still pretty crappy. The translations on various shows have had blatant errors, poor editing, and are generally shoddy compared to the quality of most of the top fansub groups.

8. CR has been poaching series by offering to be "cheap and easy" licensing and profit, basically the Chinese Outsourcing of licensing companies. This makes it tougher for the core licensing companies, like Funimation, etc., to survive and thrive.

While what they offer isn't really too bad, and probably seems pretty spiffy to the Youtube Newbies who still stream anime and have just discovered CR, money paid to them pretty much stops there. You're not financially supporting your favorite series, you're not supporting the US anime industry, and you're just helping to eat away at the foundations of the strong anime community that has been supporting the entire US anime industry since the start."

I never miss a chance to take from CR, and have already spread around the love for this episode.
Crunchyroll can go screw themselves after what they did. Honestly, I could forgive them for the past if they weren't continuing to screw over the industry today. But anyway..

The episode animation was poor.. but I enjoyed it. I mean, it's a Phoenix Wright anime, how could I not? Here's hoping it'll get better.
I liked seeing all of the characters fully voiced, that was nice.

Re: Feature: Ten Game Boy Advance Games You Should Play

Zibene999

Ahh! My favorite video game system. So many good times and memories. I've played all of the great games on the list and many other wonderful titles in the GBA library.

From playing my first Advance game, Advance Wars, during endless traveling, going through Circle of the Moon and Pokemon with friends, experiencing Zero Mission and Fire Emblem when I was so far away from home, logging tens of hours into both Golden Sun games, along with Minish Cap and Link's Awakening, Oracle of Seasons, Mega Man Battle Network 4, FFV and VI, Kirby's Adventure, Game & Watch Gallery 4, Harvest Moon..

And others.. Man, I love that thing. Back when I first really got into gaming, there was the GBA.

Re: Popular Super Mario Maker Speedrunner and Streamer Has All His Levels Deleted by Nintendo

Zibene999

Regardless of everything else, Nintendo wasn't targeting the guy, the system just took someone's report into consideration and deleted his level. I have no sympathy for him simply because he put an employee who had nothing to do with anything on the spot, recorded her and published the recording without her consent. He also acted downright rude to her when she tried to do her job and help him.

It just proves people like him are self-centered jerks who think of nothing but their own easy lives. How disgraceful. That's the kind of attitude that keeps me from being able to watch most streamers/etc. It's just gross.

The whole thing doesn't even affect him directly in the end! Shameful! If I took that kind of attitude when I first entered the workforce I would've been out on the street in no time! Disgusting..
Kids these days..

Anyway!
I agree with @FTPinkRabbit.
Having a checkbox for 'Adult' would be great! It would make playing on the Miiverse stage in Smash Bros. a lot better, for example.
Make it so people can flag posts as adult, and there you go.

Re: Pokkén Tournament Punishes Players Who Rage Quit

Zibene999

Screw win rates, I just want to find someone who actually wants to, you know, play this fighting game with me, instead of rage-quitting, stalling, or just doing nothing at all.

That kind of thing gets me really annoyed. Like, not fighting a camper, or being bodied, or anything like that, but encountering that person who refuses to even fight, that kind of thing in fighting games makes me a little salty.

I mean I buy them so I can play them, is there really any other reason??

Re: Gallery: Take a Look at Famitsu Scans and Screenshots for Zero Time Dilemma

Zibene999

@DeltaPeng I liked reading your comment, and I agree with your taste to be honest. The nice thing about the Zero Escape series is, even though they put scantily clad women in the games, they give them character depth, too, so I feel like it balances out.

About the pictures, I've already seen most of these, but these look fantastic!
The graphics (albeit probably from a Vita) look like they're being displayed on a PS3, not a portable console! Hopefully the 3DS release is near this level of beauty!

Man, this has gotten me so excited. I love the rustic feel this art style has, yet it keeps the spirit of the previous titles. Can't wait for summer!

Re: Feature: Nintendo Life's Favourite Pokémon Games - 20th Anniversary Edition

Zibene999

You have a lot of misdirected hate for Gen 5, I wonder why.
I don't understand how you can say Gen 5's story is bad when it's the story with the most depth so far in the Pokemon series, only maybe rivaled by X and Y or SS/HG.

Your opinion is not true, it's simply an opinion. Many people would disagree with you, which is a statement that is actually true.

You can blindly hate something all you want, I guess.

The fact is Gen 5 is known and respected for having a good story, considered by many to be the best out of all the gens, your opinions on the Pokemon are just that, opinions, just because you don't like something doesn't mean everyone else does.

You forgot to mention in X and Y we also got the Fairy Type. I thought you knew about Pokemon? Also, I've never attacked anyone on this website, if you're referring to Rex, that was a general misunderstanding, so please don't slander someone, it's not nice. ^_^;

I love Gen 5 because it does have a great story, that focuses on reexamining the nature between Pokemon and Trainers and does it right. The characters felt real, they had real issues I and many others could relate to. You felt for Bianca and her plight with her father, you understood how N came to be the way he was, how he thought the way he did, the gym leaders were unique and quirky, just like all the others, and on top of that they also had that classic Pokemon charm, as do the Pokemon. The OST has some of my favorite tracks, including Unwavering Emotions and Nimbasa City.
I love Darumaka, and Snivy, and Oshawott, and Munna, and Cinccino, and so many others, because they were wonderfully designed Pokemon, and some of them even call back to the first and second generation's designs.
It had fun and unique areas like the sandy Route 4, a giant unfinished highway road that was fun to explore, the giant Castelia City, filled with people and towering skyscrapers, and even the little towns like Anville Town and it's train hub and beautiful scenery, Village Bridge, a place where you can actually actively change the background music by exploration and interaction.

Generation 5 was and is an amazing, genuine Pokemon experience, which brought joy to me and many other fans for good reason, and that's really all I have to say. That's why I find it a little sad when someone misses out on something so enjoyable.

Re: Feature: Nintendo Life's Favourite Pokémon Games - 20th Anniversary Edition

Zibene999

@Zoda_Fett
I've played Pokemon since release, thank you.
Uh, I don't even know much about that game you mentioned, or games like it.
Is that how you see Gen 5? Because that's really backwards.. wow.
I feel kind of sorry for you, to be honest..

Gen 5 has a great story, amazing characters, fun Pokemon designs, good music and is overall a good game. Yeah, I feel sorry for you that you can't experience all of those things. Oh well though, whether you miss out or not isn't my problem.~

On the other hand, this has gotten me in the mood to play some Pokemon.

Re: Feature: Reflections on 20 Years of Pokemon

Zibene999

So many great memories of Pokemon since buying Blue shortly after release.

I don't really feel like typing my history with the franchise now, though. That'd be long winded.

Still, I love all the Pokemon games, except X/Y and Dash, and they'll hold a place in my heart and the hearts of many.

Re: Poll: Vote for Your Favourite Main Series Pokémon Games - 20th Anniversary Edition

Zibene999

@Shikinouta
Agreed, well, except for X/Y.
Wait, you've played every main Pokemon game on this list?
Wow, that's a lot. Impressive! That's actually pretty cool.

My votes go to Firered, Emerald, and Black.

Firered because it was a better version of the original, classic Pokemon games, with more content and better mechanics. Really the best version of the masterpiece that was the original Pokemon series.

Emerald because of my love and fondness of Gen III, the exploration, the best overall Pokemon designs in the series, the Gym leaders were great, the lore was fun, the double team trouble was pretty interesting, and the region itself is my favorite.

Black I've already gone over several times.. it's my favorite Pokemon game for many reasons, but I'll just say it's because of the story, the Pokemon, the music, the game-play, and the characters.

But it's silly to fight over Pokemon games, they're all the same series, and they're all good games in their own right.

..You really should have put the dual releases together, however.

Re: Music: Chronicles of Time, a 75-Track Tribute to Chrono Trigger, is Out Now

Zibene999

Oh, and I think it's great when companies support talent in this way.
Everyone benefits in this kind of situation.

On the album, it's great. I've played all of the main FF games, but still haven't found time for Chrono Trigger somehow. I don't think the graphics really appeal to me at all.. not that it's a bad game. This music these guys have done is encouraging me to find a DS copy, however..

Re: Feature: A Pokémon Retrospective: Generation 6 - 2013 to ????

Zibene999

@BulbasaurusRex
I wasn't saying you were one of those people.
I think Klefki looks kinda dumb and I've always thought Trubbish looks cute. But I can see your point of view, and respect the differences in taste.

My point was directed at a totally different part of the fanbase, so never mind.~

Re: Music: Chronicles of Time, a 75-Track Tribute to Chrono Trigger, is Out Now

Zibene999

@RupeeClock
Square Enix has actually been licensing fan music for years now.
To name an example, I'd point out the YouTube user katethegreat19 (Erutan) who produced her own covers for Final Fantasy and Chrono series music for a while, gradually hitting millions of views. Soon after SE licensed her tracks.

They even used one of her covers for the new FFIX for mobile trailer.

Re: Feature: A Pokémon Retrospective: Generation 6 - 2013 to ????

Zibene999

@BulbasaurusRex
You're wrong about Trubbish and Garbodor, but whatever. I and many other people find them quite cute.

Well, let me clear that other thing up for you. No, I didn't mean that at all.
I don't care what a Pokemon is based off of, but if it's ugly and silly (such as the keyring) I just can't like it /personally/. I'm not saying it's a bad Pokemon just because I don't like it, like the rather rude 'fans' do with Trubbish etc.

Again, people who called Trubbish ugly 'because it's based on trash' and then say the keyring Pokemon is fine 'because it's new and cool like Voltorb' or whatever the reason they give at the time is, are hypocrites. That's all I meant to say. You can say you find one Pokemon ugly and another not ugly, though, that's fine. We all have different opinions on aesthetics.

Just don't hate on a Pokemon /because/ it's made of plastic bags and then say a Pokemon who is a keyring is a perfectly reasonable design. That makes no objective sense. And I'm sorry to say, there are a lot of people who do that. They're much worse to the Pokemon community than 'generation one-ers' are.

I personally found almost all of the Gen VI's Pokemon bland and/or ugly. I don't hate the design scheme, however, as it's the same as it's always been. I'll feel free to say I think this Pokemon looks more awesome than this Pokemon, but I wouldn't say the design philosophy itself was terrible. That'd just be the rantings of "a foolish fool foolishly dreaming a foolish fool's dream."

And that's all I have to say.

Re: Feature: A Pokémon Retrospective: Generation 6 - 2013 to ????

Zibene999

@BulbasaurusRex
Trubbish and Vanilluxe were also awesome looking designs that turned out to be pretty cool Pokemon.
I agree with you. I was pointing out the fact that there were people who trashed (lol puns) Trubbish and others and then went on to say Gen 6 had far superior designs, which is simply not true. They were designed by the same company, they're all designed equally.
You don't like Vanilluxe? Fine, I don't like the keyring. We disagree. Is one design fundamentally better than the other? No. Not at all.

I realize I sounded very critical, but I only speak out about the series I truly love, which are few and far between, so when I say all that stuff it's really coming from my love for the Pokemon franchise. Let me be clear, I'd still play Gen 6 games over many other modern games any day.

I'm just nitpicking details between different entries as a fan, that's all.

Re: Video: Digital Foundry Tackles the Native Resolution and Framerate in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD

Zibene999

It's a little disappointing it doesn't have a few extra new details besides the amiibo, and my biggest want (besides the removal of Lakebed Temple, of course, lol but realistically here..) was for them to remaster the music.

Other than that though, it looks like a good port for those who have the Wii U and want to play Twilight Princess for the first or even seventh time, now in HD with Amiibo features. Not bad, Nintendo.

Also 30fps is pretty standard, you know. Besides fighting games, that is.
