In early March we shared some rather attractive Famitsu scans and screenshots of Zero Time Dilemma, the upcoming third part of the series that's very much on our radar, especially as it's heading to the West on 28th June. Handsome as those shots were, they were mostly of the Vita version, which makes use of the Sony system's higher resolution.
Screens of the 3DS version are now available, thankfully, albeit with largely black lower screens. Nevertheless it does allow direct comparison with the Vita iteration - there's a resolution hit, clearly, though it still looks fine on 3DS.
Vita
3DS
It's looking promising, and below are a lot more 3DS screens; we've cropped out the bottom screens as, without variation, they're blank with a simple blue 'menu' button. Take a look.
Are you looking forward to Zero Time Dilemma, and perhaps playing through 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors and Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward again as a warm-up? Let us know.

I just got Zero Escape so maybe ill be finished with that right as this comes out.
Can't wait! Hope it's not going to have the same bug of Zero Escape i ran into after about 13 hours of playing... Still, I loved the first two games!
Yep, I also got Zero Escape a few days ago.. I do have to say this game is very appealing to me..
Really excited for this one! The cinematic presentation looks nice, but I hope that doesn't mean it'll be lighter on content than the last game.
The 3ds is going out with a bang.
Vita version has more vibrant colors, more detailed textures and smoother character models, so I'll probably go with that version first.
The HYPE...I have it! I may get this twice if the vita version works with the VitaTV/PSTV. Already have the 3ds version preordered.
The graphics are about what I expected, not amazing, but I'll deal, as I am very much a fan of this story. I wonder if it'll have that weird thing again where the 3d models are just flat on the 3d screen but still in front of everything else... that was weird.
Also, it's hard to tell but it looks like we're doing the grey thing again... I liked the way 999 had this stark contrast between the dark things going on with the rather festive surroundings, that I missed in VLR
I would have had no idea that was a butterfly on his jacket if it weren't for the Vita screenshot.
No bunny no deal.
JK. Super duper excited :3
just finished 999 for the first time, gonna replay VLR sometime before Time Dilemma.
Do you need to play these in order?
@Dezzy Do you need to play them in order? No. The games are constructed in such a way that they're understandable in isolation.
Should you play them in order? Absolutely. This is the final chapter in a much larger and more complex story, and, if VLR is anything to go by, it'll be more meaningful for people who played the previous games.
I just got 999 used for $15. I'll be playing through 999 first, but these screenshots look amazing.
Having a hard time deciding on whether to get it on Vita or 3DS. Vita version looks a lot nicer, obviously, but note taking is a lot easier with a second screen and a stylus. I guess it'll depend on if there's a price difference between PlayStation Store and eShop. Either way, apart from Zelda U, this is by far the game I'm most looking forward to this year.
I would get the Vita version, but I don't have a Vita. 3DS it is then, so looking forward to this.
GAWK
Definitely not bothering with the Vita. I'll get the 3DS version please so it can match up with the 999 DS & VLR 3DS boxes. Why switch teams now for a slight visual upgrade and minor pallet adjustment?
Slightly?
As someone who owns vita and 3ds, I can't wait for chance to use vita again!
I don't know what this game is, but it looks damn good.
If anything, this makes the Vita version look worse than anything. Probably developed for 3DS, then had slightly higher-res textures slapped on when it was ported to Vita mid-development.
doesn't the 3ds version of zero's escape have a horribly game-breaking bug in it? (o_O )
I want to buy it, and I would rather get the 3ds version, but I'm worried about getting the bug after putting in hours of gameplay.
@Utena-mobile Zero Escape is the name of the series, not a game. Which one are you talking about?
@FlowOfDough the first one? I think. Not the one for the ds. the one for the 3ds.
@happylittlepigs
The game is like a series of Resident Evil type logic puzzles you need to solve to progress the story. For example, you are locked in a room with a bed and a computer. You search the bed and find a key, the key opens a box hidden under the bed, in the box is a riddle, you solve the riddle which gives you an answer, you type the answer into the computer which gives you a math question that you solve and input that number into the keypad that unlocks the room... lol maybe I should design a level... VLR Maker! It's heavy text based adventure, so you're reading a story and it describes in great detail the room, and what you see, etc.
@Utena-mobile: The game breaking bug in Virtue's Last Reward (which is the second game in the Zero Escape series) can occur while saving the game in some of the puzzle rooms. The next time you open the game, your save file is corrupted. No one knows what causes it so it's advised to avoid saving in puzzle rooms. The puzzle rooms can take up to an hour to solve.
I haven't encountered the bug myself and neither has any of my friends. There's one room in the game that's supposedly really risky (PEC room) and I think they changed it so you can't save there in the NA eShop version of the game. You can get through the game even if you save in said room (which you can do in European eShop release and physical releases) but there's always the chance of encountering the bug. Most players never encounter it but it's something to keep in mind.
I'm really excited for this. That first picture looks very interesting.
I didn't look at anything else in this article other than the first picture since I don't want to know too much about the story in this game before I play it (I loved 999 and VLR, so I'm sure I'll love ZTD)
I encountered the save corrupting bug in VLR 3DS after I quit the game in the risky PEC room without saving it. I spent the next day rushing through the game making the exact same story choices as before
Just bought VLR and will be picking up ZTD as soon as it drops.
With Fire Emblem in between it is gonna be a busy few months on the handheld front.
Nice shots, even if the Vita version is (obviously) better looking. I don't have a Vita, so I'll stick with my good ol' 3DS.
I think I am going to make sure to not look at any news or screenshots of this game though. It's release is getting close, and I don't want to spoil too much.
@Late The PEC room actually outright crashed my game the first time I went through, and I didn't even save. I think there were also reports of a certain event not triggering in that room, making some people get stuck. After that first crash and luckily not having my save corrupted, I just grabbed a walkthrough and made my way out of there ASAP.
@crimsontadpoles: I didn't know it can corrupt a save file even when you're not saving. I hope it was one of the first paths you took. It's really bad when you encounter the bug when you're almost done with the game just to notice that your 20+ hours were wasted.
@CapricornDavid: But your save wasn't corrupted? My game crashed in one of the rooms too. It was one of those dice puzzles. I noticed some really bad framerate issues with it and then it just froze. It's not that bad to replay a single puzzle room again since you know what to do for the most part.
@Late No, it actually didn't corrupt for me, thank god. I think sometime after this game was released, Nintendo added a back-up save option to the 3DS, so now I'll use that as an extra measure in case it goes wrong next time I try to play through the game again.
I prefer the 3DS version I really like the 3D effect in video games and 3DS XL is so much more comfortable to hold and use as well in my opinion I don't see where the vita version looks that much better a very very slight difference.
@Late I heard about the bug before playing VLR, so I definitely didn't save in the PEC room before closing the game. I've not seen anyone else encounter the bug who didn't save, so maybe it's a rare occurrence.
Thankfully, it was probably the 3rd path I took, so it didn't take too long to rush through the game again.
I have just acquired 999 this week (already got VLR but yet to play), so will hopefully get going soon on this series.
@crimsontadpoles When I get to VLR, will it be obvious which room is the PEC room?
The quality is pretty much what I expected. I really love the Vita's clean, HD-like visuals, but I'm still getting this on 3DS.
@gcunit
Yeah, it tells you the names of the rooms in a little slide before you enter through the door. The PEC in particular is announced as such by the characters when you enter it. They explicitly talk about how it is the PEC room and what PEC stands for right when you get in.
The only trouble we had with VLR was the dice puzzle. Ugh, crashing. But we got through it eventually. It's an amazing game in an amazing series, for sure.
Ugh, alot of damage control going on here. I would love to get the 3ds version because I have both 999 and VLR on ds/3ds. But there is no denying the vita version of ZTD looks ALOT better than the 3ds. On the guys shoulder is an orange "smudge", it is only when looking at the vita version that you see it is a pin in the shape of a butterfly. The rest of the screenshots dont look bad but people saying it is only a "slight" difference between the two versions are in denial.
@Late yikes. can't believe it was never patched. Well, I have a ps tv, so I guess I'll get the ps vita version. (T_T )
Thanks for letting me know.
