It was recently reported that Eric Medalle – the Creative Design Director at The Pokémon Company International – passed away yesterday afternoon in an accident. Medalle was taking his daughter for a Sunday drive through a nearby park when a Douglas Fir was pushed over onto their SUV by heavy winds. His daughter only suffered minor injuries, and she was pulled from the back of the car by an anonymous bystander.
At The Pokémon Company, Medalle was responsible for designing nearly every TCG logo so far, and he also made the logos for Pokémon Dream Radar and Pokémon the Series: XY. In addition to serving as an artist for the Generation VI and V main series games, he also took part in some of the spinoffs, such as the Pokémon Ranger games and Pokémon Conquest.
Our thoughts are with Medalle's family in this difficult time.

Rest in peace.
My condolences to the family, glad the daughter is still alive.
Rest in peace. My sincere condolences go out to his friends and family.
Freak accident, what a shame. Never saw it coming.
Sometimes behind small things like logos lie people who really deserve to be better known, it's also sad that he died so young.
Rest in peace, Medalle!
Condolences to his family.
Damnit, I swear yesterday I had a feeling that someone from the games industry passed away. What the hell? Rip
So I'm assuming the Fates Collide tcg logo was his last, then? I will buy a pack when that comes out with him in mind.
- Rest in peace Eric Medalle. You will continue to live on through the wonderful creations you have given to the world. We send our thoughts and prayers to your family.
rest in peace, sir. also to akira tago and his family. .
Thoughts go out to the family.
Talk about a freak accident. Rest in peace. Glad that his daughter only had minor injuries.
Rest in Peace ✌🏼️. Much condolences and thank you for your hard work with Great dedication.
R.I.P. Fellow Graphic Artist.
This is horrible! Rest in peace Mr. Medalle...
Layton's puzzles mastermind Akira Tago passed away today too... We need an article about that
Without him the series is in jeopardy too ... Even more than it was before with Layton 7
I am just playing Layton vs Phoenix Wright... I'll play that in your honor Mr.Tago
@fafonio Big bucket of win to both Akira Tago and Eric Medalle. They will be missed.
Jeez... Rest in peace man. :/
R.I.P. Mr. Medalle. I'm glad his daughter survived.
Very sad to hear someone died in that storm; I live less than 25 minutes away from where this happened and the weather was terrible that afternoon with 70-80mph winds. I'm not sure why anyone would want to venture out in a day like that. Still sad for a daughter to lose her daddy.
That is horribly sad! Prayers for their family.
i'm not sure who this is, but it's always sad to see somebody gone. RIP My Prays goes to his family.
What a crappy way to go, at least his daughter survived.
That sucks to hear that happened, But glad to know his daughter survived at least.
This is awful poor guy. So young.
@TheRegginator Killed is fitting as he didn't die of natural causes or was murdered. He will be missed, fortunately his daughter survived. As a father if I were in the same situation, I would do everything in my power to make sure my daughter was protected. My thoughts and sympathies are with his family.
That is beyond awful and so tragic. My sympathies to his family and friends, especially his daughter. Such a freak accident.
Man, that's pretty depressing. I live in the Portland, Oregon area and we had essentially the same wind storm roll through a few days ago. An old acquaintance of my wife died in the exact same way, with her daughter in the car, from the same type of tree, I think. There are just so many enormous trees everywhere you go in the Northwest, and this time of year the weather is wetter and windier than normal, so you really need to be aware of your surroundings and keep an eye out.
I hate to hear things like this... It just brings about an awful, nauseating feeling to my stomach. I'm sending my thoughts, condolences, and prayers to the family. I don't play Poké TCG but I'll purchase a pack tomorrow in his honor. You simply can't take chances with nature and you've got to put safety first. On that note, everyone else be safe out there. And if you ever find yourself second-guessing the weather conditions, stay at home.
Oh wow that's terrible, glad to hear the daughter is ok, but darn
..., Terrible day, ..., two persons passed away...;
...
well, Akira had 90!, I believe that he had a good life and yes, left a great legacy with his puzzles!;
...
Very sad for Eric, an accident finished all..., at least, his daugher be ok, but, really it is very sad...
"Pika, Pikaaaa!"
Horrible news. It's always terrible to hear somebody's life being so unfairly taken away from them. My condolences to the family.
What's a Douglas Fir?
Thanks so much for an awesome childhood Mr Medalle I'll keep playing your games over and over I actually really liked dream radar, ranger is one of my favourites too!
@H_Hunter A Christmas tree...
@Haru17
Otherwise known as a Snover.
Very sad. My thoughts are with his family, espacially the daughter who was with him.
OMG this is terrible news. R.I.P thoughts are with his friends & family at this difficult time. He was so young too Someone died from the Professor Layton games yesterday aged 90.
@H_Hunter Looks like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_fir
May he rest in peace. My condolences to his family.
Such a waste of talent, this is no age to go, especially if there is no reason for it. I hope the daughter will be well taken care of because she will have to miss a dad in her life. Condolences to the family.
Aww damn it.
When I saw the age I thought we might have had another case like Kenji Eno (dead at 42 due to heart failure), or Akira Saito (cancer, 43). But an accident rather than an illness?
All the best to his family and colleagues.
R.I.P.
What a tragic accident May he rest in peace. Condolences to his family and friends, and especially to his daughter.
@fafonio Yeah. We lost two great Nintendo content creators today.
So terrible! Rest in peace, and thank you for all of your wonderful work on the wonderful Pokemon series. 😭
RIP Eric and prayers go out to his family. such a tragic accident. glad the daughter is still alive
I wonder... will this affect Sun and Moon in any way?
I've always enjoyed looking at game logos. It's something I can usually look at for upcoming games without it spoiling anything, and they're all so unique. Especially around E3 when all the new games are announced. It's great to see an artist being recognized for his work too.
Well that's just a sad way to kick off this wednesday. Rest in peace, League Champion.
@PigmaskFan
DUDE.
@TheRegginator ??????
He was killed..... by a tree.
This is horrible, and at such a young age...my condolences to his friends and family. At least his daughter made it out okay.
What the hell!? Darn it!
@PigmaskFan Dude... No...
Hmm, not the best of days for Nintendo gamers. First mister Tago and now this person. And at such a young age its even more tragic (and at a trafic accident, wich is always tragic). Rest in peace, mister Medalle.
Having just recently survived a bad accident (and having a lost a dear friend in that same accident) this hit me harder than I expected. My thoughts are with the family, especially that poor girl who just lost her father so young.
@Henmii I know right. This year really keeps getting worse death after death.
Its a sad time for the Pokemon Company.
@MitchVogel
Out of curiosity, why did you remove the picture of him being very happy with his wife (I presume) and replace it with a generic Pocket Monsters image? It wasn't like that when I first saw the article.
Guhhh, that's horrible news! I'm glad his daughter is safe but condolences to his friends and family.
Rest In Peace Mr. Medalle
This is very unfortunate. My sympathies to his friends and family!
My condolences to his family. I'm glad his daughter survived though. You never know when your time is up. At least he was spending his last few minutes with his daughter.
freak accident, not involving any games
What a terrible tragedy and such a trauma for his daughter to suffer too
R.I.P
@PigmaskFan REALLY?! Don't be that guy.
@PigmaskFan You know, I'm not sure if people are still reacting to the picture you linked or they're yelling at you for asking a legitimate question. If he had any involvement in S&M it very well might, though likely nothing major.
Rest In Peace. And while this has been said before, it's a good thing that his Daughter survived at least. You will be missed Eric Mendalle.
Rest in peace! What an awful way to go!
@Ryu_Niiyama Yeah it's a silver lining :')
@H_Hunter http://texastreeid.tamu.edu/images/TreeImages/douglas-fir150.jpg
Screw this Douglas Fir, don't renew it please
It deserves to have no more plants that are Douglas Firs
It's always difficult to find things to say at times like this. I'm glad his daughter survived. Rest in peace.
R.I.P. Thank you for all your hard work involved in the Pokemon Franchise.
First Tago yesterday and now Medalle? This week has been very sad.
My prayers go to his family.
RIP Eric Medalle
I want to make a really awesome Pokémon YouTube video dedicated to him............
@ZAZX When the original picture shows up as a thumbnail on the front page, it gets cropped pretty badly, so we swapped it out.
@MitchVogel
Ah, very well, a good enough reason.
Also tagging @DiscoGentleman since they also wished to know about the picture swap.
Didn't know how much he meant to the Pokemon community until now. Damn... Rest in peace. Thank you so much...
What hurts more are the trolls who are making pictures of Sudowoodo saying "Oops...Sorry!"
What an awful way to go... My condolences to the family, especially his poor daughter.. No one should have to witness such a terrible thing...
What a shame, really came out of nowhere. Rest in peace.
Terrible.
There's nothing good to say except that his daughter survived.
Thanks for all of your work, Mr. Medalle.
..Guess I'll buy a TGC pack in honor. Rest in peace.
this is so sad! I wish this accident had never happened R.I.P Eric Madalle
