With the release of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD just around the corner we thought it was about time we looked back at the fantastic reveal that the original game received.
Much controversy surrounded the art direction of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and many people wanted a more realistic Zelda game on their Nintendo systems. Nintendo obliged and at E3 2004 the world was shown its first glimpse of the next game in the Zelda series.
It wouldn't be until a full year later that more of the game was shown, and it was at this point that things really started to look like the game we know as being released in HD in the very near future. Check out the video below where we take a trip down memory lane and relive the glorious moment of Shigeru Miyamoto appearing on stage wielding the Master Sword and the Hylian Shield.
Oh, and if you've not already done so, you might as well subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube; it'll put a smile on this old geezer's face for sure.

I remember this! Very epic and that applause from the crowd was amazing. Never finished the game. Guess I have a good reason to repurchase the update and finish it!
One of the absolute best E3 reactions ever. Still sends chills down my spine!
The fan recorded ones with live audio during the video reveal are simply amazing. The slow murmuring in the crowd building to full on mass hysteria.
It was an interesting reveal. They certainly weren't going against the grain delivering a trailer that catered to a more mature audience. We certainly haven't seen the word 'bleed' again in Zelda promotion since.
It still is best Nintendo's E3 show ever.
Memories...and I still love the use of the music from Conan the Barbarian.
Good to see somethings never change, even way back in 2004 Nintendo had no concept of what "coming soon" meant.
That first trailer made me want to replay the game more than anything I've seen of the HD version so far. The 2nd trailer made me want to replay Okami again though. My mood is easily affected by music.
OK, if I hadn't played it already maybe I would pick it up for $60, that amiibo is very cool. Would rather save my money for Zelda U though.
Maybe that's why Zelda U still doesn't have a date, don't won't to tell people it's coming out as the late May game for $60 and have people not buy this?
The game looked like the Zelda everyone wanted when it was revealed. And turned out to be possibly the most maligned
I screamed my head off (and cried) the first time I saw this. My parents thought I was nuts until my mom saw that it was a Zelda announcement. She just closed my door and went back down the hall.
This will probably stay my favourite game reveal of all time, haven't seen anything like it since. Plus being a huge Zelda fan helps.
There's a better video out there that shows it happening live with people's freak out reactions. Much more impacting.
I had been there in the room back then. I was working for a German website, got accredited for both E3 and the Nintendo PC, so I got to witness this moment as closely as possible.
Such an incredible moment on an already incredible day in an incredible week.
I was so happy when this all went down I went to Gamestation the next day and pestered them about a pre-order any extras everything, I brought NOM and collected all the stuff leading up to release but I loved seeing Shigsy on stage with the Master Sword and Shield more than anything!!
Brilliant reveal! Pity Nintendo wrecked the game with the silly wolf sections, the loss of that amazing forest too was disappointing. Seemed to lose alot of its charm on release as Nintendo retreated to their safety net!
@JudgeMethos I completed it on GCN and Wii. The GCN version was better with camera controls.
Ah, yes...one of the best E3 moments ever.
@Funky_Kong Really? You don't mean your going to TP a house?
Well, that announcement was the origin of this meme after all...:

@Ryu_Niiyama
XD your mom knows you very well.
Such a great time

I don't get why so many people hate Wind Waker.
Best e3 announcement ever
@rjejr I really don't see Zelda U coming out earlier than November 2016, maybe later though.
Sure was a fantastic end to a great E3 press conference in general. Do prefer the Digital Event + Treehouse streams style from 2014 though (2015 would've been great if 2016 games were revealed like TP HD, Pokken Tournament and the apparent rumoured titles if true).
They hype was immense. It was almost too much for some people, but I think it was spot on. The game delivered.
I really hope Zelda U can match. I'm hoping it's going to feel like the original Zelda did when it was released.
Yeah, this was a pretty spectacular moment in the history of E3.
@Chandlero That's a better version of the video.
@Kirk Yes, it is still so great when the crowd recognizes Link in the video and goes absolutely crazy
@Grumblevolcano Well I'm sill sticking w/ early 2017 as my Zelda prediction - after getting announced for holiday at E3 it will be delayed until 2017 end of summer - see SFZ - but I was just throwing that out there as a hypothetical. If it was any other game - Paper Mario, Pikmin 4 - then it could get announced in Feb for a May release, but I still think they're stuck on how to do an open world game right. Maybe Eiji is still playing thru the Elder Scrolls games and XCX to figure out how to do it right?
I can't get over how amazing the music in the last trailer is. I hope Twilight Princess HD will have the same music, only slightly upgraded.
I remember NGC magazine reporting this and describing many instances of grown men crying... and with good cause.
@Tempestryke LMAO yeah it is well known in my immediate family that if I'm hyperventilating or screaming its A-L) Zelda related or like M) I'm actually in pain or dying. I remember scaring a buddy at work when the OOT 3ds was announced...He thought I was having a seizure (his words not mine)
As I may have mentioned before I played through LttP after a childhood accident left me in the hospital for several months and out of school for almost a year...it gave me something to focus on and kept depression at bay. So I have a unusually strong attachment to the series in general. Thus me turning into a crazy person when games are announced.
@Ryu_Niiyama
Aww. hugs
Ah, memories of the era when I first stepped heavily into video gaming and geek culture..2004-2006.
Those were the best years of our liivveess~~
Such a cool trailer will never happen again. Its all half-baked Nintendo-trailers now, with Nintendo-people talking DURING THE TRAILER!!! A complete sin!!
