Don't have Facebook (not F'd), Twitter or G+. They are a stupid waste of time, so I'm missing out on a sweet 30 points :-/... I got around 200 points. Seems a bit mean that you need 1000 to spend it on a single small game. I spent so many points on their overpriced Club Nintendo rewards, shouldn't I get something for that? At least I got Flipnotes. That is reasonably fun at least.
I have the golden 3DS that they released with Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. It is the perfect size for handheld games and has a reasonable battery life (although I carry a Game Boy Advance on long trips). I love to play Professor Layton on it is the perfect size for puzzles.
@Marce2240 Mother 3? Most people don't speak Japanese. This website claims it does not promote 'piracy' (although I would argue that term is corporate propaganda designed to prevent sharing of media), but we all know that we can just patch the copy we were 'given' for emulation.
I love Zelda, but my favourite is Mario+Luigi. I have had lots of fun from that game. I also wasted 150 hours on Pokemon Emerald, but it is too locked down so impossible to 'catch them all' so to speak and I don't know another living soul with the game. Fire Emblem is almost impossible to get hold of for some sane price. Advance Wars though... I have played the ones on the DS, so might give it a try sometime.
@tjhiphop
It's not cross-buy though. It was a one off.
Don't feel too bad. They are inept and at the very minimum should look to other consoles on how it is done, but ideally they should look to GOG.com at how it should be done. They should just release them restrictions-free as a file we can load on our consoles/computers. People who would usually pay will continue to, as they would not want to go to dubious websites and want to support further development. The people who won't pay for whatever reason will always find ways around price.
I haven't much sympathy for them. They should have known this would happen, because it violates copyright, and they have been given real money for it, so are profiting from other people's work (according to the copyright law). They should have put their resources into something original, rather than trying to get recognition because they used Nintendo characters (a bit harsh).
I think the problem with Nintendo is that they make it incredibly difficult for people to develop their own games and programs for their own consoles, and when people want to use the media they have legally purchased on other computers or on different consoles, they can't. Nintendo should make it possible and simple for people to make their own games and programs. People will always 'pirate' games (a term itself promoted by the 'intellectual property' racket), so why do they have to make legitimate customers' lives difficult?
@PlywoodStick There will be no video acceleration though, to the detriment of most modern video games. This is because the 3DS is proprietary hardware, such is the agressive nature of Nintendo's guarding of its secrets. It is a pity because the 3DS would be interesting to run various libre video games, and would benefit from a proper music player in VLC. It would of course just be fun to see what people might do, given freedom.
@Spoony_Tech Perhaps most of the trafic to the site is for reviews, by people browsing the internet casually, rather than from people who watch the site closely.
@Miiamoto I don't play Call of Duty, because it has little substance, and is just mindless shooting. I'm not saying people shouldn't be allowed to play any video game they please, but that we should condemn games that promote sexism (in the case of this game) and over-the-top violence, and unrealistic body types, as you say. Media has influence, despite being fictionalised, because it reflects society. If we want to make society a more equal and harmonious place, we need to object to content that promotes objectification of women. Therefore, while games are an escape from reality, we should be careful about which reality we are escaping to. This is nothing to do with objecting to freedom of speech.
The question is, will it have a variety of good games at launch? Will it be backwards-compatible, to keep the old customers? Will it attract developers small and large? Will it be a good all-rounder? Having good games and support is what gets people to buy games and consoles, which in turn brings in more developers. ...
@pubjoe Everyday sexism is not a matter of how 'openly' sexist something is, but how it makes it seem normal. The fact that the game is sold in stores means that it can be considered 'mainstream' and this, I would argue, makes the game more harmful. If people see it sold in stores (albeit mostly in Japan), they will likely just ignore it, but the fact that it is there means that there will be a tendency just to ignore it, rather than object to its content. It is sexist, and it reinforces discrimination by objectifying women.
I like Metroid Zero Mission too. It is short, yet sweet, although Fusion is superior in the respect that it had more content. However, I think that there were one or two interesting mechanics in Zero Mission that should be repeated. In another 2D Metroid game.
I'm sad that Minecraft sold out to M$... We all know what happened to other games and games companies that sold out. I fear Minecraft will be exploited until M$ can't wring another penny from it, and then abandoned, forever gathering dust at M$'s Redmond, WA lair.
'Intellectual property' is a familiar but meaningless word. It suggests a nonexistent relationship between copyright, patents, trademark. It is basically corporate propaganda... so please stop using it!
@CHET_SWINGLINE What I'm saying isn't that people shouldn't be able to sell games. It's just that patents (inventions that are useful), trademarks (designed to show that a work is made by a person/organisation) and copyright (designed to prevent unfair copying) are different, and apply to different things. I did not mean to come accross as accusing, it's just that we should not confuse the three, under the vague term 'intellectual property'. It is essentially corporate propaganda because it is used as a catch-all term by big business to justify the various draconian laws around copying and modifying work.
@CHET_SWINGLINE You realise 'Intellectual Property' is just corporate propaganda? It is a meaningless term that suggests a vague link between trademark, copyright and patents. They are actually completely different, and apply to different works. Nobody really knows what it means but it has become a familiar term because it is parroted in much of the written media.
I hope this comes into fruition. I also hope they make it free and open source software before there is some mean take-down notice on the part of Nintendo! Even if they don't implement some stuff, I really hope they just release it so we can just walk round the beautiful environments!
Keep in mind games in UK are really overpriced: Game sell new (and old) releases for £40, about $60. Even £35, as Amazon sells games that have just come out, is about $53. It's stupid to split the game, though, in my opinion. I suppose people in Europe just can't be realistically expected to buy two (similar) versions of the same game.
They had better show off the new Zelda game, even if it isn't completed yet. A wish I have for the game is to see the return of player vs. player battles as in Four Swords Adventures.
My qualm with the game is that you can only play with 1 or 3 players. Or at least that's what I read about on the Ars Technica review. The lack of purple link is also glaring. It's not like 4 player hasn't been done before? In fact, if more time had been spent on the game, I suspect there could even have been up do 8 players, working in teams of their choosing. Also, bring back Shadow Battle from Four Swords Adventures!!!
@Souldin Rockstar were based in Scotland... a while ago. They have a large studio in Edinburgh city centre called 'Rockstar North'. Now they are multinational they are not based there any more, but a considerable amount of development has been carried out in bonnie Scotland.
@Yorumi Where did they get the drivers from? Perhaps they developed them themselves. Or maybe they got them from some dubious source. More likely I'm thinking is that they modified a console to create a disc image
Just out of interest, how do they rip the discs? They're some sort of proprietary format, so how do they force a disc drive of the type in a laptop to read them? Most drives just fail to read GameCube and Wii discs at all in my experience.
@Snader That was when BASIC was a lot like FORTRAN: difficult to learn, and difficult to maintain code. Thankfully BASIC has changed, and so has FORTRAN. They're much more usable now and more like other languages. Although Python is certainly a better choice for teaching beginners!
There's that phrase again: 'IP'. What does 'intellectual property' actaully mean? It is just some meaningless soundbite used to link copyright, trademark and patents together, as if they are some tangible physical object. All governed by the sinister 'World Intellectual Property Organisation'. Seems like these corporations just want to supress creativity. Stop using this meaningless phrase! Instead of saying "bringing IP to mobile devices", say they are "bringing Nintendo games to mobile devices".
'Intellectual property': what does it actually mean? There's copyright of works, but the term 'IP' is so vague that it is only loosely related. It suggests a relationship between patents, copyright and trademarks as something comparable to a physical object. Patents, copyright and trademarks are all designed for different things. At the end of the day, 'IP' is just a term used by big corporations to suppress creativity, all governed by the sinister and dubious 'World Intellectual Property Organisation'.
I love Warioware! The micro-games are pretty fun. However, my favourite game is Warioware DIY for sure! I spent hours churning out wacky, wonderful games, usually involving some sort of silly premise. I also loved making the odd homage to various arcade games (none of which I ever managed to play in actual arcades, though)! Then, I discovered the online competition that was held monthly. I was selected about 5 times. which made me quite impressed with my game-making skills. It's part of what got me interested in programming more advanced programs on my computer. It's simply satisfying to make a program (here, a game), and have it work how one designed it. That's the simple joy of games like this! It's just a pity the competitions are no more after the servers were abandoned. I live in hope for a new Warioware DIY!
I couldn't get any of these. Not really fair as I have bought so many of their games. However, I do have the green Zelda 3DS carry case, from a few months ago.
Looks cute! However, it is probably not worth £30+, unfortunately, requests for fellow anthropomorphic residents was not always very fun in the other games.
There will always be dubious plastic figurines. This makes little difference in terms of fakes, except maybe they can work with consoles. I doubt the people who manufacturer the fakes would put any effort into putting the NFC chip in their products, let alone putting data on the chips
I wonder if they will sell it with both versions on the same cartridge, or if they will make people choose, and then pay for the other (hope it is the former)?
