When the 3DS Virtual Console was introduced, it brought with it the promise of giving classic portable games a new lease in life much the same as the Wii Virtual Console did for classic console games. While it had a pretty strong start, it's no secret that the 3DS Virtual Console has been lacking for quite some time now. With each new week, fans faithfully expect a mighty return for the service and each week they end up disappointed yet again. Now, it appears that Nintendo has reached a final decision on the release of Game Boy games.
A fan recently tweeted at Natsume inquiring about whether or not an obscure Game Boy game published by the company would ever see a release on the VC. The response the fan received was something that we've all known for a while now, but it's still some pretty tough news. Evidently, Nintendo is done with releasing Game Boy games for the service. Here's the tweet:
What do you think? Will other classic portables soon be following suit? Do you feel that the Game Boy library has been properly filled out? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
Thanks to Benson for the tip
I think Nintendo should offer something of the iTunes format and have their entire catalog out. Virtual Console is something people love, me included, and we want to be able to get access to classic games.
Nintendo has moved on from any kind of Virtual Console releases on 3DS for months now. :/
Nintendo are out of games to release on Gameboy and Gameboy Color.I could say more but you people are so depressing that I won't.
Meh, the Oracle games are all I need from Gameboy VC
Depressing in what way?
This just validates those who want to use a GB emulator on the 3DS. Nintendo has once again(!) completely squandered a golden opportunity. The homebrew scene will now fill the void they are leaving behind.
This is unfortunate. The Gameboy Virtual Console was one of my favorite things about the 3DS. Some wonderful games I only experienced firsthand through this service, like Donkey Kong '94 and Kid Icarus for the GB. The GBC library is also extremely limited for them to not be releasing any more titles.
I kept hoping they'd eventually bring Gameboy VC to the Wii U too...
The biggest problem is 60% of the non-Nintendo is licensed games that Nintendo can't do anything about. I am surprised more Namco Bandai games aren't showing on the eshop. Pokémon is the only real thing left for the VC and GameFreak doesn't want to else the old versions of the games. As much trouble as they would be to get linking to work right. As far as I know Gameboy non advanced linking still causes emulator makers trouble.
I hope that the reason that the Virtual Console has been so quite is that they have been working on having a huge selection ready for the NX at launch. Probably not but one can dream.
Kind of suspected this, but still....bummer.
I would love to see more VC games come to 3DS, as they make up the vast majority of my downloads. It seems as though Nintendo has pretty well quit with the VC service in general. I'm still kind of hoping that GBA games will come to the system, but that hope slowly dims each passing day.
At least there's the Sega 3D Classics still occasionally coming from M2.
I've been hoping for the Final Fantasy Legend games to appear. All three of those were a lot of fun back in the day.
I was kinda hoping that we'd see some Pokemon games eventually, but I guess that's out of the picture.
Well no reason to not just get a GB emulator for the 3DS now.
Ridiculous. Just because Nintendo has dried up their Game Boy library shouldn't restrict third party companies from releasing their titles on the Virtual Console. Nintendo just don't want to put in the effort to license third party titles.
@MitchVogel I don't think TPC or GameFreak want the older games to be available again, unless it means paying full price for a remake.
Game boy games haven't aged well at all so it's not a big deal. The screen ratio alone makes the games almost unplayable.
Sad to say, but I found that most of the GB games I wanted were either out already or Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest games. And with the way Squarenix acts, I never expected anything of that.
The bigger loss, in my mind, is the lack of the GBC games, the COMPLETE lack of GBA games, and the COMPLETE lack of SNES games. Honestly, I DONT WANT portable GBA and DS games on my Wii U. I would rather have them on a portable system. Isnt that what Japan is like too?
Well, they got most of the good ones, anyway. Now if only they will release Secret of Mana and the original Star Fox on the Wii U VC. Give me just those two and I'll be happy.
Natsume also said something similar about the WiiU VC. Not too long afterwards, Metal Marines got released for it, a game I never expected to see on VC.
@ToniK Really? Gimme a break.
@brianvgplayer They said no more SNES VC on Wii U, yet it still gets some. I take this with a grain of salt.
RIP 3DS VC sadface Nintendo has abandoned alot of things on its own hardware. They should have been pumping out VC games and what in the world is the deal with only a few Classic 3D titles. Sega really could take over the 3DS as its own system if they wanted too. Actually I wouldn't mind if they did cause they would treat it with much more respect than Nintendo is giving it. I really don't know what to think about the NX. Are they going to do the same things with that system and leave people feeling like a huge hole of gaming goodness was forgotten to be added to the system. Also when I first bought the original 3DS there was this AR card in the Box that actually turned a table top into a dungeon crawler, where you moved around the table at different angles and battled some cool looking Monsters. It was kind of a demo of things to come. Well it never came.
Windy opens a can of worms
I hardly play any of my VC games anyway... I get tired of them so fast...
Sega/Natsume does what Nintendon´t.
I don't get the supposed difficulty in putting VC games out.
I also hope this is leading up to something big for the NX, but fear it's just another sign of Ninty's laziness.
Was always hoping for GBA games to make it, so sad, even DS would have worked but nope.
It's clear Nintendo don't give a rats &$$ about VC. Funny thing is they'll probably announce it as a service on NX and expect people to buy the few they release again.
I already bought the GB games I wanted (Kid Icarus, Metroid 2, and some others) so I'm not terribly sad, although this definitely is not the right choice Nintendo could have done, considering fighting against GB emulating should be in their interest.
But what does this mean about the lifespan of the 3DS? Could it be possible that Nintendo is not releasing any GameBoy games on Virtual Console because they are focusing on the next handheld? The NX is due to be revealed next year afterall so it's possible the 3DS has a shorter lifespan than we originally thought.
This is the second time that Natsume have made this sort of statement.
SNES games are still being released so it seems like more of a case off Natsume passing the buck.
They say they are done with Game Boy games, but yet they bring Game Boy Advance to Wii-U. This article and Nintendo's strategy at large makes little sense.
@Smash_kirby that one has been known for a while by the people who used the ROMinjection trick to use the VC to launch other games - the 3DS VC fails to properly play back the Pokemon roars in any of the GB games, which makes it fall below the Nintendo Quality Line of "perfect or GTFO".
Now why Famicom Wars wasn't released, THAT's a question.
That's the one thing I hate about Nintendo's Wii U and 3DS VC it's so half arsed compared to the old Wii VC it's a shame that the VC got worse instead of building upon what was a fantastic service previously.
I've given up on it I'll just play the games on the old consoles I have if I want to play them. But there's plenty of new games to play
If people are smart they'll just go and buy the old cartridge Game Boy games and play it on the GBA SP instead. Stop wasting dollars on these retro games that will never come which you will probably never own either.
They're probably going to relaunch the Virtual Console for smartphones and tablets.
I've got a feeling they're porting them to the portable NX too.
@retro_player_22 That's what I've been doing recently. The only problem is games like Mega Man 5 that go for 80 dollars used on Amazon.
This is why I have no problem with people using emulators.
why do we need VC? it was fine for the first 2 years when there was maybe no games, but do we really need it now?
Yes, this just confirms what has been obvious for a while. It feels like Nintendo is in the process of moving away from both the 3DS and Wii U to focus on the NX debut, probably late 2016/early 2017. They're giving more attention to the Wii U (including Wii U VC) because they feel that system needs a lot more support. I wouldn't expect much to be released on the 3DS at all next year, although there should be a few good Nintendo games. More third-party eshop games, although don't know what the quality will be. Maybe not as bad as Wii in 2011 and 2012, but pretty close.
The games I was really hoping for were Operation C and Castlevania 2, although due to the problems Konami is going through right now, they might not care to release them anyways.
@Uberchu We need it because some people enjoy replaying games from their childhood, or playing games they may have missed out on. Some of these games would be hard to legally obtain without the virtual console.
@sc100 Mario & Luigi Paper Jam, Fire Emblem Fates, Federation Force, and Bravely Second are releasing next year. If they get localized, there's also Rhythm Heaven: The Best+, Ace Attorney 6, and Monster Hunter X. Even without mentioning everything releasing in 2016, next year already seems better for the 3DS than this year was.
Well, between this and the pretty much empty EU boxed relase-list, i think i'm about ready to "move on" from my 3DS.
Decent VC games could have been a cheap way for Nintendo to fill the vacuum of 3DS releases here, but that could have been a smart move, i suppose...
Ok, I'll buy Nintendo's excuse for the Game Boy games.
Now, what is their excuse for not putting out NES games on the 3DS VC? The Wii U is still getting NES VC games.
I just wish Nintendo would come out and say that they don't care about the VC service on the 3DS.
Its sad when Sega does a better job of putting out their classics on Nintendo hardware then Nintendo does.
@retro_player_22 That's actually the opposite of what someone smart would do.
I think people are underestimating the troubles and procedures to publish third party IPs on VC. Maybe the troubles and legal fees would be too expensive for a couple of sales? 99.99% of the people who bought the VC games (myself included) are 80s~90s kids who want to relive their chidhood again, and only a small portion of us care about them to begin with.
Honestly though it is still a bummer. I tried playing old games with emulators on both PC and my old DS. However but it just feels more "original/authentic" playing it on VC. Somehow the frame rate, the controls and the feels are more familiar. Maybe it's just placebo's effect.
Shame. There's so much potential with Game Boy on Virtual Console still. Nintendo is missing a trick. Let's hope they get it right with NX.
@shaneoh What this young man said.
@Storytime7 You listed Federation Force as if that's a good thing? Troll is strong on that one.
That sucks. Meanwhile we get a ton of Gameboy Advanced games on Wii U. Why? I have no idea. I'd rather have 64 and SNES games myself.
@ToniK Love your avatar! Question your logic!
Umm...but Natsume is the same company that said Nintendo was "moving on" from NES and SNES on Wii U, and THAT'S not entirely true based on recent releases. Don't think I can entirely trust them, sorry.
To clarify, I don't think that means we should waste energy expecting that next big wave of games week after week...just that I don't think Natsume deserves to be taken as FINAL word on the matter given their track record.
Big mistake, first of all the Gameboy libary is huge, secondly it has some of the best games ever released thirdly Nintendos gameboy releases for VC have been poor, so many good titles they have missed out on, and lastly the pricing is very much an issue, tackle these 4 issues And gameboy VC will indeed sell well, seems a shame to abandon such a great libary of games
One less reason for me to buy the next Nintendo console I guess.
Nintendo moving on from Virtual Console Game Boy games on the 3DS eShop? Of course they have: they're too busy making toys (eh hem, amiibo) instead of making games. Bleh. I'd much rather have GBA games in the eShop than GB games (which we know won't happen although the Ambassador GBA games run perfectly even on the original 3DS models).
I was really disappointed with my Gameboy VC game support, there's no colour options at all.
Obviously they're saving them for NX. I wouldn't be surprised if they threw their entire 1st party catalog on there. Instant best library ever.
Game Boy Advance and DS games please. I want to play Warioware Twisted and the remake of Fire Emblem 3!
@shaneoh As much as I love the Oracle games, and as a guy who's actually replaying both of them at the moment on his SP, those are probably the games I'd less likely get on 3DS. Not because I already have them physical, but because the limitations of the port make them impossible to fully complete without ''cheats''. Namely the GBA rings are unattainable unless you get codes from Internet code generators which are not your own. They honestly should have thought of that kind of exclusive content before releasing the port.
I don't think people here understand how much trouble these old video game licences and legal nonsense can be for people to work with, It's a real maze made out of spider-web and from Nintendo's viewpoint, not worth the trouble.
Take for example a game like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the arcade game on the NES, now that game was made by konami and published by Konami's Ultra now the current owners of the TMNT brand is Viacom and the current publishing rights are with Activision. So it would be jumping trough hoops to get just that game done Nintendo can't just toss whatever NES game on their VC. And sad as it is they can better put that time and money to better use at the moment.
Well so much for that. As a nostalgia gamer who buys these systems for good VC it's pretty disappointing.
No GBA games is just silly madness.
Whatever. I really don't get why the VC is so ignored at times
Pokemon would be awful on VC. There's no way they could get trading and battling to work correctly in multiplayer, so it would be impossible to complete the Pokedex. No thank you.
I'm not sure people are right about the NX theory.
Here's what I think: As we know Nintendo only has a very limited number of people who produce the VC releases. My theory is that Nintendo stopped 3DS VC in favour of DS, N64 and Wii VC on Wii U.
First of all I cannot believe in all of you are falling into Natsume trap. Second Never Trust Natsume remember the snes games. Third We just have to wait and see.
No GameBoy Advance, no DS (not even for New 3DS, as they claimed 3DS is not powerful enough for them?) No N64... And everytime I see a new ds or n64 release for WiiU... A single tear falls on my cheek.
so we won't get the metal gear game for gameboy colour?
I guess I am one of those people who has been waiting for specific games and just wondering when?? The games in question for me are the GB Final Fantasy games. They were a collection that kept me playing my Gameboy until the screen completely went out. When that happened, as you can imagine, I had no use for the physical cart anymore and they are no longer around. Well, I guess some lucky Ebayer wil get my money now.
Boo... For being a huge fan of the GameBoy, they clearly haven't provided enough GameBoy games compared to the library of NES, SNES, and N64 titles they had on the Wii Virtual Console. Maybe they should release more GameGear games, or see if they can include NeoGeo Pocket and WonderSwan games on there too. I mean heck, they only just released Judgement SilverSword, the best shmup on the WS, on Steam.
...Still, Nintendo should release more GameBoy and GameBoy Color titles to the 3DS Virtual Console!
I'm satisfied with what I have on 3ds VC. I think the real topic that needs to be discussed is why Turbographix games aren't on the 3DS when Nintendo announced earlier that they would do so.
Honestly, I don't see the issue for lack of GB games because there are lots that I still have to get. And this isn't even confirmed as its coming from Natsume and not from Nintendo.
It's because they're working on Virtual Boy VC releases....
And next week they will surprise us and we get bomberman on vc and bomberman on smash. It will be empty.
Weird that Nintendo hasn't got any releases at all anymore and now they also stop that one big catalogue that's seems so perfect for filling up these gaps.
I'm not surprised, honestly.
They've done all the first-party, localized games, right? I can't imagine, at the price, that it's worth it to go through licensing, sometimes with companies who have changed hands multiple times. Are there any big sellers from the original Game Boy that haven't come out?
Shame on Nintendo! They are not supporting the 3DS with more VC PORTS while Sega is willing to release more REMAKES from Mega Drive on the same console. Nintendo keeps on alienating their most loyal fans.
I was hoping for GBA and DS games being released on 3DS after they have been released on Wii U, which is not the most appropriate platform for retro portable games.
The VC was one of my favorite aspects of the 3DS
so this news really stings. I thought the 3DS was popular enough that they'd want to support it, but I guess not.
@Splatburst We don't know if the NX is portable..
Let's face it, why would you pay £3.60-ish for a near 20 year old Gameboy game when you could buy a fair few phone games totaling that cost? Or indeed get free GB games the "other" way.
Sadly there's no doubt there's not much else they can release GB wise (Pokemon Pinball aside). The lack of multiplayer emulation kills the chances for games like Pokemon. Granted they could still be releasing NES games (Earthbound Beginnings could have made more dosh on the 3DS too,but nope, you wanted another excuse, like Earthbound, for folks to pick up a Wii U) and added SNES, GBA, and DS to keep the thing alive but....again, I guess it's mostly Nintendo trying to make more reasons to pick up a Wii U. Not great reasons, but reasons none the less.
Perhaps if the Wii U did not under perform, they would not shift their focus to just the Wii U VC, but I'll be surprised if they try again on the next handheld, if there is one, but if they do, they're going to need much MUCH more then GB, GBC, Game Gear, and NES to keep it alive.
It is portable. The 3DS doesn't support Unity, but the N3DS does. I don't think Nintendo can sell another 40 million N3DS. They need a new one that is more powerful, dev-friendly and all. I think the Wii U has another year or two into it before they finally drop support.
Years ago, before I ever got a 3DS - I assumed that Nintendo would have a huge library of previous gen games ready to download. Hahaha.
They'd better have something epic in place for the NX, because I'm not buying all these games again. That's it for me. If I can't transfer my buys from my NNID/3DS & Wii U, then I will just carry on with my 3DS and not bother with the NX.
Even more reasons why I should continue to use Gameyob on my 3DS.
We need more VC games across the board.
I suspect that the main reason they are not releasing these games is that they don't make much money on them. I actually think they would make more money if they dropped the prices to mobile game levels ($1-2), because they would sell more of them. I think a lot harder before spending $5 than I do before spending $1 or 2.
I also wish they would put all those GBA and DS games that the Wii U gets on the 3DS. I don't know how much work would be entailed to do that, but those games were largely designed for portable platforms (shorter bursts of play), so it's odd to have them on Wii U but not on the mobile platform. The GBA games are more important than the DS games, since you can actually play DS carts on a 3DS. I still have pretty much any DS game I thought was worth getting at the time.
What aggravates me is the huge potential of the VC that Nintendo continually wastes. I would especially love to see SNES and GBA games on the 3DS, but those ambassador GBA games are all we're ever going to get of that, and most people probably don't even have access to those. It's irritating because I love games like Advance Wars and Fire Emblem Blazing Sword, but I'd much rather have them on 3DS and portable like they're supposed to be.
Until there is an official statement from Nintendo I'll take this with a grain of salt. Even if it is true there are tons of current games to play . It isn't like VC is going to make or break the console.
It takes time and money to re-release games. Not a ton I'm sure, but that is still money and resources that Nintendo may feel is better used elsewhere. Perhaps certain console's VC don't give a big return and thus is not worth the manhours. We don't know. No reason to grab pitchforks.
Moved on to what though? Moved on to nothing? That's what it seems to be. Overall, it is kind of sad as this should be something a lot easier to do and should be able to release games at a relatively good speed and these are good games yet... they somehow fail to do that. It just baffles me how this would be easy money for them with little work and yet they don't want to support it much.
@ikki5 I've heard rumours of Nintendo making VC games for smartphones - maybe that's what they're moving onto.
Actually, it seems like they've moved from the 3DS Virtual Console period.
There goes my hopes of Dragon Warrior I & II, the gameboy color remake, ever getting released.
I hope this is just Gameboy and not Gameboy Advance. Still a few GBA games I'd like to see.
I was really hoping that they'd break and put some Pokemon GameBoy games on there. I mean, those were some the most iconic game for the GameBoy.
As much as I love my GameBoy Color, It's not very reasonable to carry it around with me along with my 3DS just to replay Pokemon Blue.
I wish nintendo would release more vc for wii u and 3ds. Would love to play TMNT: Turtles in Time with four player local co-op and online.
I'd rather hear it from Nintendo themselves... Natsume has been wrong in the past.
I think it's time to accept that VC isn't a system seller and no longer a high priority at Nintendo. It sucks but they have bigger problems.
I do think VC really needs to be revamped.
VC on the 3DS was the main seeking point for me when it was announced. Kind of disappointed that it ended so soon in the consoles life.
Old, hardcore Nintendo fans might not want to hear this but...
Virtual Console is for a super niche segment of the market. And apparently, too niche to be all that profitable, if it all.
@Fearful-Octopus YES. I've always wanted to play one of the older TMNT games.
@DarthNocturnal To be fair, you hear from Nintendo that they have moved on from Virtual Console every single Thursday when they announce their digital releases.
A bit of a weird source for info that major. I can see Nintendo coming out with a statement about it if there's enough backlash.
But for now, screw you Nintendo. Again.
@japongt No, I listed it because he said Nintendo is not releasing much next year. It may not have been what people were asking for, but it's still a 3DS game releasing in 2016. Besides, you never know how it will turn out until it releases. It could be a good game.
I always thought that they might be holding back until the new membership system comes in. Maybe due to crossbuy and the like.
It's kind of funny how much worse Nintendo and Sony got this gen with re-releasing older games as compared to last. The Vita doesn't have access to several of the psone classics you could download on PSP, and the PS4 doesn't even have PS Classics support. Nintendo, for its part, has made some similarly baffling decisions with its VC line.
Meh, That statement's not from Nintendo. So i'd take that with a grain of salt.
Even if its true, There weren't that many GB & GBC games i liked anyways. Ah well.
@Ralizah I think Nintendo is better with re-releasing older games this gen. Not everything from the Wii VC is there, but many games that were never on the Wii VC have been re-released this gen. I played a lot of GB/GBC games (DK '94, Game & Watch Gallery, Shantae, etc) for the first time because of the 3DS VC, so I'm satisfied with how it turned out.
As for the Wii U VC, I'm always up for playing GBA games. I know a lot of people wanted these games on the 3DS, but I'm just glad they're being re-released at all. Playing these games on the Wii U is at least more convenient than playing them on a GBA. Wii games and even some games people did not expect (DK 64) have also been re-released on the Wii U.
@DarthNocturnal I'm just waiting for Nintendo to show some type of life post-Iwata. They haven't exactly been too vocal. The social media stuff has been pretty much on auto pilot. I don't expect to hear about that new membership system until 2016 at this point.
@Yorumi Amen man. This is why I don't sell games. If I really want to play one of my old games, I can put in the original cartridge to the original system and have a go.
I thought that the new membership system was coming this year, alongside the first mobile game.
It's been so long since they've said anything, I think the info got jumbled up... bug maybe not.
@DarthNocturnal Yes, they did say the new membership thing would come out this year. Other things they said would come out this year: Zelda U, Star Fox Zero, probably something else I'm forgetting...
Point is, when they tell us ANYTHING, it's more or less a best guess.
I guess this means we won't get Ghost Babel ...
Before calling Nintendo names, do we know how many games are actually out there for which there that Nintendo can release for which there would be a market?
Let's use Tail Gator for an example. It is today a rare game (I base this on the fact you can't find it for under $100 on eBay) which means it has limited visibility outside of small groups like those who post on here. It is owned by a third-party which means profits have to to be shared or a license has to be paid (but Nintendo would bear the costs). It is probably a bad investment.
Nothing is stopping Natsume from putting together a collection of its games and making them available in physical (or download) form on any console of their choosing. If Nintendo could do nothing about Rare Replay, it does not have that power.
In other words, these things aren't happening because there isn't enough money in it.
@Windy: I agree. This it totally unacceptable. I personally own over a thousand games between my Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games. There are plenty of first party titles Nintendo could still release. I call BS. What about Game Gear games? I guess any hopes of having Mega Man Game Gear are out the window, along with Virtual Boy games...
I've got all the Gameboy (Color) games I'll ever want.
If they wanna bring GBA or SNES, I'm definitely ok with that. But if not, just leave the 3DS VC be and focus on pumping out more VC for Wii U.
@mike_intv: I can't believe Tail Gator is $100! I have a copy, but it's not mint.
For a while I thought it was an alternative to collecting (I'm not a purist and like the convenience of playing the games on the 3DS/WiiU ) but Nintendo just doesn't care enough.
I hate the argument that it doesn't sell enough...it never will if there are hardly any games. Might as well just get those games for a couple of bucks and play them on the GBA.
Wasn't there a similar story a while back about NES games on the Wii U virtual console but after a while they started doing it again?
If they'd included even the most basic colour palette options like on the GBC these games might have been more popular. I know I was specifically boycotting buying the games because of it. The GB library was huge and they've surely missed a lot of good games.
Nooo, too bad. I would like to have Metal Gear Solid ghost babel on the eShop . And i don't understand why wiiu receives gba games and the 3ds gets nothing, i think gba games are perfect for a handheld console .
That's sad as I was enjoying 3DS VC releases...they should now move onto Virtual Boy titles imo, it's what everyone's wanted, and they could at least bring over a few of the better titles!
So now that the game boy games are finished on the 3ds, they should work on adding gba games on the 3ds. Having gba games would get people to download more Virtual Console games off the e-shop. I'd love for Zelda Minish Cap or have Pokémon Fire Red or Emerald on the 3ds e-shop.
Dang I was hoping for the rest of the Megaman Battle Network and Sonic Advance games.
Thank you. I barked about that in every Club Nintendo survey.
@James_mussell98 I've heard the 3ds isn't capable of properly emulating snes/gba roms. Not sure if that's true though. Then there's the new 3ds. Could that system be up to the task? I still have no idea. I think it's just wishful thinking at this point. Nintendo has no interest in releasing GBA or SNES games on 3ds.
What a huge disapointment, so many gameboy color games left out, plus nintendo should have released gameboy advance & DS games on 3DS as well. I dont want to play GBA games on my Wii U.
great idea bofis, I cant think of any better system than the Nintendo 3DS to release Virtual boy games on. The only problem I can see is that emulating Victual boy games on the 3DS could cost Nintendo a lot of money in research and development, which Nintendo might not make back in returns. I don't think there is a large demand for Victual Boy games sadly.
@KnightRider666 I don't think the VC is missing much with MM Game Gear. It's a cookie cutter game that takes levels from some of the NES games and has odd scrolling. It doesn't have unique stages, features, and music like the GB games. Not to mention that all of the GB and NES MM games are on 3DS VC. Don't get me wrong, I would like to see more GG games on VC (Sonic Chaos is an odd exclusion), but MM isn't one of them.
I don't know why this is news. Natsume also said no more retro games were being released on the WiiU VC before Nintendo released Earthbound Beginnings and Vs. Excitebike.
@brianvgplayer Sonic chaos!
I wanted GBA and DS game on eShop. Doesn't matter if it's not VC, no save state, etc. Just treat it as eShop releases... like Wii releases on Wii U.
Well besides some third party and/or obscure niche games, what else is there to release? we know that companies like konami, capcom, EA and square won't release squat.
That's a pretty major bummer. There were a few classics I was still waiting on, namely Metal Gear: Ghost Babel. Nintendo has made a fair deal of money off of me using the VC, and I'd spend more; I feel this is a wasted opportunity.
Sad. It's like Sony and the PS Vita re: PS1 and PSP games... You have this massive backlog, and a working emulator. Why not release your whole backlog, at least the one's that wouldn't be awful to (re) secure the rights for?
@Megas75 there is a deep sadness in my heart. I've been googling "Ghost Babel VC" every couple of weeks for 3 years now
That is a little more than I was thinking for next year. Had forgotten about the possibility of Rhythm Heaven being localized. Would be great if that happened. There's also Hyrule Warriors Legends, but like with Federation Force, we'll have to see if it's any good. Yes, this year seemed poor for the 3DS. Majora's Mask was the only thing that really excited me. Although after an amazing 2013, every other year seems to pale by comparison, even though there are good games released.
That's a real shame. It'd be nice to have some new Virtual Console games, especially in the gaps between Nintendo releases.
Nintendo's Virtual Console program has been a bad joke from Day One on every platform. Two decade-plus-old games that have already seen countless repackagings going for $5 to $8 or even $10. Purchases linked to specific consoles rather than a unified account (It's gotten somewhat better but people have lost HUNDREDS of dollars worth of purchases when a system went down or they sold it). Spotty, inconsistent and seemingly random games support (Rare Replay gave the XBox One roughly TWICE the number of Nintendo 64 games of Nintendo's own Wii U VC!).
I don't know what Nintendo's plans for downloadable purchases are after the Wii U and 3DS but the VC needs a complete overhaul. It's an antiquated, grossly overpriced laughingstock at this point.
@BinaryFragger What's more is considering how easily other people put games on emulators. If they can do it, I know Nintendo could release a couple good ones each week and it would probably cost them next to nothing to do. So why are they so uninterested? Maybe they think the revenue isn't worth whatever minuscule amount of time it would take to stick the games on the VC? Many (if not all) of which already have working ROMs out there...
They NEED to go back to Game Boy - we are STILL waiting for Pokemon Pinball!
@retro_player_22 if they are even smarter they can play them on any other device for free!
@AtlanteanMan yeah. Nintendos VC is very poor and substandard.
@Superryanworld lol. Don't be so silly. The Genesis/MEGA Drive is more powerful than the SNES. Nintendo are LAZY.
@KnightRider666 why would you want to continually pay out for more VC roms? You should back up your collection and play them for free through better emulators on a device of your choice!
@wazlon lol. You can already play every gameboy game on Android. Why would anyone want to pay over the odds for Nintendo's CRAP, drip fed and overpriced emulation?
Oh how the pirates will laugh in our faces for this.
@liveswired Thanks for clearing that up. I'm not a tech guy, so I'm not aware of the technical limitations of 3ds.
This is so damn stupid of them. Nintendo's biggest flaw of the past several years has been the way they neglect the Virtual Console, a service that has the potential to be THE greatest thing in gaming, but they just don't let it live up to it's potential. They dump a few iconic games on it and then forget about it, not even growing the Wii U's to match the VC before it.
They need to simply devote an entire team/branch to VC releases. Hopefully one that appreciates superior versions, too. It's sickening that we get the terrible GBA port of Yoshi's Island yet we can't get the Advance versions of the FF games with the vastly improved scripts and content?
ANDROID is crap!
It's a real shame, most players would love to see even a half-functional iteration of say, Pokemon Red on the Virtual Console. Even if we can't trade or migrate, it would still be fun. That said, I do hope to see some GBA stuff on the 3DS where it belongs. Wii U is great, but not the machine for GBA titles.
@PinkRabbit same, all I ever wanted was RBY/GSC regardless of the lack of trading/link battling :^(
terrible. simply terrible. there are HUNDREDS more gameboy games you can put on the eshop, but no, i guess nintendo is just frickin lazy, as always....
This hurts. I kinda figured since no games have been coming out but ... this is definite confirmation. Sigh...
@KnightRider666 MARCH ON NINTENDO! Whose with me? Are you with me? Of course I'm joking because if we did March on Nintendo everyone would get suckered into taking a tour of Nintendo Headquarters haha.
It's funny the rain that has been coming down on Nintendo for these sorts of decisions, when it has been plain news that fewer than 10 games released on the Wii (outside first party titles) exceeded sales parameters. As in, most games published to the VC on the Wii did so to an eventual loss.
Natsume, elsewhere on the Internet (I think it was Go Nintendo, actually) confirms that most VC titles still take around 1000$ / region to port over, not including staff or marketing. Consider then that, if 8 seperate regions got the game, 1600 copies would need to be sold to break even. 1700 if we include staff and marketing costs. It's as if people assume Apple does any of the work with iTunes or Google populates the Play store on their own.
It's nothing similar.
Outisde companies create the content and pay for it to be on those services. And most artists on iTunes still lose money.
Nintendo's not putting out the games you're not buying anyways? What a shock.
Maybe this means they'll actually start re-releasing those GBA games, you know, now that they've done the work for Wii U anyways..
I find it funny that @NL doesn't warn you for advocating people use illegal emulation.
Since it is, you know, ILLEGAL.
Buy hey, just because law enforcement has better things to do than jail you for stealing 15 year old Pokemon games means it's totally cool to justify theft. Aside from the fact that emulators were created for shareware and fan made sequels and prequels to games that otherwise didn't receive them.
Like the Mother 3 english translation or a fanslated copy of Langrisser (pretty specific, I know).
Not so people could copy the games to the Internet and ship them off to people too cheap to pay to game.
It's ridiculous to me that someone could be so entirely uneducated about BOTH the ineffectiveness of mobile devices to properly play classic games (the controls are and always will be horrible) and the cost of actually porting over these media.
It's painfully obvious you're unaware that for every new market, Nintendo (and Sony and Microsoft and Steam and whoever else) needs to port the game over again. Meaning new ESRB submission, new PEGI rating, new USK rating, new Cero rating, etc.. to the point of near complete financial waste.
But hey, convince 1000 of your closest friends to BUY the games and then you'd see them out and cheaper.
You won't, I know that much for sure.
You're the type that refuses to understand, because it dwarfs his own intellect so entirely, it doesn't make sense to try and so you default to 'external means' to satisfy your desires and lambaste those around you for doing the same.
This announcement is on US.
3rd parties complained about high prices on the Wii and hey, look, SEnix is selling DQ8 on Android for 25$.
That's just 10$ more than what they wanted to charge for Chrono Trigger. Think about that before you smash Nintendo for 'high prices'.
You know... Instead of drip feeding us Virtual Console, they could have sold us collections on cart or disc. Like Kirby's Dream Collection. I think collectors would have been pleased, many folders and SD card purchases would have been avoided, and there would have been far less Virtual Console complaints. If a game was never released on the collection; oh well. If they were afraid people would only buy Wario Land 1, but not 2 and 3, they will anyway through the collection. Nice artwork, nice booklet, no waiting. Imagine if we were given the Mega Man games this way in the first place? Or all the Castlevanias with all the GB ones. On one awesome gamecard. I've only been playing Nintendo games since I was 4. But hey. Maybe I don't know my butt for my elbow.
@LegendOfPit They'll end up putting the same ones that have been available on Wii, 3DS and Wii U probably. We're get the normal Super Mario Bros added and some of the old sports titles, then...a year or so down the line, something that hasn't been released already. It would be nice if they'd add some of the classic games like The Goonies 2, Tetris 2 or even some of the other classics that have been long forgotten, even if that means that they have to get the rights to do so. Hopefully, the next library on their next system is better, and we get more than just one-three games per week.
Most of the Game Boy games were probably lost, besides the cartridges, anyhow. Disney doesn't give a crap about about A Bug's Life on GBC, and GameBoy companies came and left.
Well maybe they will get their act together and start releasing SNES games like Sega with their Megadrive and arcade games but then again I think Nintendo have lost their way they release the new 3DS and what do we get hold on nothing they made a deal with Unity and what we do we get hold on nothing the 3DS in a great hand hold but they just keep pushing the Wii U
There's just too much software to ever get it all on there.
Big Mistake: We still need Operation C, Final Fantasy Legend, and Poke'mon.
I'll have to let go of any hopes I had left about seeing GB and GBC games such as Kirby's Tilt 'n' Tumble, Adventure Island II, Ninja Gaiden Shadow, the Pokemon G1 and G2 games, and a few other make it to the Virtual Console.
Very nicely put. I agree entirely. Nintendo have wasted the potential of the VC with their laziness. Unfortunately for us they seem to see it as a way of milking old school fans (who being the most loyal are way down the priority list until times are hard) when it could be so much more.
@MrRight Totally agree Nintendo should just hire someone to do VC games for them. I'm afraid Sony put Nintendo to shame with what they offer on the Playstation Store - you can choose from a huge selection of classic PS One games and there's even Mega Drive games, Dreamcast games and some PS2 games which have been available for download on PS3 for ages. The way Nintendo operates is a bit odd at times.
Here is a solution to make everyone at least more happy. Take all the remaining VC games on Wii, put them in that wonderful wrapper used for Wii Games, and release the stupid things in the eShop.
Really hoping, but not expecting, that they'll redeem this junk on future consoles somehow. Guess we'll see...
Too obvious. Too logical. For some reason they won't do anything that sensible.
Oh what the virtual console could be! One of many reasons why Nintendo is losing customers at a rapid rate!! If they pull this crap with the NX, they may as well start making their 3rd party publishing plans now!!
@PlywoodStick It's likely legal issues...couldn't secure rights to music from the composer. Couldn't find who owned the copyright for x. Better to miss out on a gameboy title than face a much more expensive series of international lawsuits later on, unfortunately.
Okay, what the hell, Nintendo.
The Virtual Console is literally the last thing this company has going for it. Everything about this screams "we don't care anymore, let us die quietly already".
I WOULD say we should say something, but oh right, high and mighty Nintendo has flat-out stated that they ignore any and all fan petitions.
I'd probably care more if we could do simple things like remap our controls with 3DS VC. Any mario game is practically unplayable with A to jump and B to run.
Hey Nintendo, this is why people use R4 cards on your consoles. What is with today's companies and abhorrent allergies to money?
Can't say I am too surprised, At least I got GBC Shantae and the 2 GBC Zelda games. It was surprising Nintendo didn't even include any color options for original GB games like Metroid 2 or DK or even DK Land on VC. Oh well, this is why I have a back lit modded original GBA system to play all the other GB, GBC and GBA games I want. Have to say I am really enjoying the GBA DK Country games as well as the GBC DK Land games and Super Ghouls'N Ghosts is as awesome as I remember it.
Nintendo has alot of GB & GBC & GBA games to offer.. it's upsetting to see some games will never get a chance on the VC . Sometimes Companies make really stupid and Big mistakes.
This just in: Nintendo "moves on" from making money.
At least you can emulate a gameboy hardware system background by holding select when you load the game. Also, there is an option to have the old school green display by holding L +R and pressing Y
@TeeJay Well except if you really want to look for those rarer games (Shantae perhaps), I'm sure you could get a cheap repro of those quite easily, I mean c'mon many prefer emulator, repro are just emulated port on cheap carts. Now I'm not promoting repro here, just a thought. A smart person would do anything to get his game even if that means buy a crappy game like Mortal Kombat Advance for pennies, wreck it and turn it into a good game like Mother 3.
@liveswired They could but don't be surprise if the people who made those games don't have jobs anymore (THQ, Midway, Hudson, Atari, 3DO, Working Design, Quest, Acclaim, Ocean, Silicon Knight, etc. and maybe soon to be Sega, Konami, and Capcom too). Your choice, play free and lose good gaming publishers / developers or buy their games and have them make more. The future of gaming is up to you, who you kept and who you kill depends on your money. Just look at the Ouya, you got thousands of free games to play, yay. Why is it dying now? Well isn't it obvious, they don't have jack nothing from you guys. No money, can't survive, all those free games will dissolve along with them unless if you already got them download first.
@KTT There's something called flash cartridge that could also do that and if finding a rare game is difficult for you, seek a repro seller and had them sell you one. And yes there's always the illegal free job killer (the emulator) too if you don't want to buy anything that is real. Just want to point out that by using emulator to play rom you are hurting the industry more than you help.
@retro_player_22 Thank you. But I do have a flash card for DS and I do use it sometimes to check out the most obscure and worst games ever for lolz and gigglez (like Crazy Frog Collectables: Art School) or games unavaiable in my region (999 or Tamagotchi Collection), but whenever I have the chance I prefer to buy a real thing, like I did with Spore Hero Arena - which is a pretty bad game (and I appreciate all the bad-ness) or 999 which is one of the best games on DS I've ever played. That said, the only reason I bought the flashcard (and a classic NDS with its touch pressure sensitive screen) is homebrew Colors! and I would never play a decent game on it for real.
If something is good, just buy it.
Playing on a flashcards or emulators, while helpful to find some nice games, does not provide me the same amount of joy I would get from playing a real thing. This is the reason I bought Atari 2600 and few games on it - to enjoy the games in all their true retro glory. And this is the reason I prefer Virtual Console over emulators (even if both basically emulates the games): I know I own the games, I know I play them how the creators wanted me to play them and playing on an actual system just feels better.
