The fruits of the Nintendo and DeNA partnership are still very much a mystery to us. We know that DeNA has been enlisted to assist Nintendo in bringing their IP to mobile device platforms, but what this exactly means is still anybody's guess. Will the first release be an app or a game? What franchise will be chosen to blaze the trail? If particular sources are to be believed, then we are due to receive more details on the first release very soon.
CEO of Tokyo-based game industry consultancy Kantan Games, Dr. Serkan Toto, recently took to Twitter claiming that not only will the release be announced soon, but that we should "expect the unexpected". Cryptic words, for sure, but it really makes one wonder what he knows. Naturally, this should be taken with a grain of salt, but do bear in mind that the first DeNA project is due out before the end of the year. Here's the relevant tweet:
What do you think the first release will be? Do you think it will truly be something "unexpected"? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Loyalty program (formerly known as Club Nintendo) related possibly? Although that would most likely not considered to be a game.
I imagine that none of the 5 games planned with DeNA will involve Pokemon.
The first game? Metroid Runners. They should also announce the Club Nintendo replacement soon. There are a lot of things coming. Smash Bros DLC, DeNA announcement, Club Nintendo announcement, and Xenoblade Chronicles X. We need a new Direct if they still plan on releasing them.
FZero.
I'm sure a Mario Endless Runner is a given at some point. I would have thought they would lead with Mario in some guise anyway to really get the brand on mobile. It'd reach 150 mill in no time. Potential for a Mii Sports game maybe? Considering so many had that game, a simple sports convo could work on mobile easily.
Just so long as it has nothing to do with pikmin 4!!!
Urban Champion - The Endless Runner. Because Nintendo just can't seem to let this one go. It got a 3D Classics release, for crying out loud, over far more deserving franchises.
Project Giant Robot?
@SigourneyBeaver Hmm.....could work. I mean Asphalt 8 on the phone worked out great and its a fun racing game.
So I've played two of the games made by DeNa. One is Battle Tactics and the other is Final Fantasy Record Keepers. Neither of these games are that engaging when the first time I played them and they just play average. I hope Nintendo knows what its doing here.
I think what most people are expecting is a "mobile version" of an existing game idea. Like an endless runner Mario or a Advance Wars clone. But they've always been clear that what they're doing on mobile will fit mobile.
So I had always just assumed it was "not what people are expecting"....
Donkey Kong flying barrel or the kart section would work wonder on mobile.
zelda wii u has been moved to a strictly mobile game, no wii u version coming at all, and the nx is basically an amazon fire you can dock your phone in and play nintendo games on? oh wait, he said expected the UNexpected...
@IceClimbers Yep. TPC already have multiple mobile games and their own companies to deal with that market.
This is purely Nintendo.
@IceClimbers That seems to be the case. Pokémon Shuffle, Pokémon TCG Online and Pokémon Go don't seem to be part of this deal. I think we can safely assume that The Pokémon Company handles the Pokémon IP on mobile platforms.
I don't care, just do the game right. Please, I beg you.
is going to be a mario with microtransaction that give the ability to mario to jump higher...
I'm calling it: New Gen VI Pokémon game in the style of the Game Boy era. =P
I have once again consulted with my Awesome Inside Sources and can reveal that the first Nintendo/DeNA release will be Super Mario 65.
I'm guessing it's a game, could be something surprising that nobody here will be able to guess.
Expect the unexpected indeed: This new game is called "Princess Peach farting on Rosalina".
Psst... it's an app. Mario Maker for Smart Devices.
Or it's Pictochat for smartphone.
I'm guessing they'll want to use a big name IP just so it's free advertising. I'm even more certain they'll base this entirely on Japan, so forget about any series that is big in the best but unpopular in Japan. Probably some kind of puzzler that is either Mario themed or Nintendo themed like Smash. Will it be good? Probably not. Will it make them more cash than any of their Wii U or 3DS games? Definitely.
Animal Crossing: Microtransaction Festival?
Is it me or was there not already an announcement about a pokemon app/game out? I don't care too much what it is, as long as it doesn't affect full-console-dedicated games!
Not rey expecting them to ever make it, but a Dr. Mario visual novel would be fun
I think it'd be crazy to release something that's not Mario. Everyone knows Mario, his name would be recognizable by 90% of mobile users, if not more.
Source: none tbh
"Expect the unexpected"? You mean they cancel it? That'd be nice...
Super Mario Maker: Portable lol (with microtransactions to get all the tools ohgodihopenot)
Its actually just an app. You set it up with a payment card of your choice and everyday you boot it up and just watch Mario or other Nintendo characters of your choice take money from your account.
Pokemon Shuffle 2 - The Shuffling
We shall see if it's "unexpected" or not...
@Baker1000 or 9.99 for the full version.
I'll pop the corn.
It's obviously Mario related. Nintendo would be stupid not to make that their first game. Mario=money
Uncharted 5. Now THAT would be unexpected.
Super Lawsuit Simulator, where your goal is to chase hackers, data-miners and copyright breakers only to beat them to a pulp. Then they're dragged to a courtroom and given death penalty.
Okay, that was a dark joke, but after the Pokémon lawsuit I've read (and commented) about a few minutes ago, what would you expect? Personally, I feel Nintendo's attitude sometimes looks like an elaborate Aristocrats joke.
One person's idea of unexpected may not be another's obviously. My thinking is that I have no expectation other than a long term monetization plan and a game that keeps updating over time to keep people interested. That, and a major IP backing it. We were warned about that.
So the unexpected part could be that it isn't Mario or Zelda. Or it could be that it isn't a skin over an already successful game (with a proven monetization scheme)
@skywake
First off, they own Advance Wars. Why would it be a clone?
Second, Advance Wars fits perfectly on mobile. You don't need reflexes with turn based strategy games.
A new IP exclusive to phones?
@aaronsullivan The game being a Zelda would be unexpected for me, actually. It itsn't as much of a sales juggernaut as franchises such as Mario or Pokemon, nor does it seem as well adjusted to mobile gaming.
Unexpected...turn-based Splatoon RPG?
@Nintendian
Actually I'd really like a pictochat esq game lol particularly if it connected to your Nintendo ID. But the princess farting on rosalina could work too...
I wouldn't be surprised if they did do a Dr mario mobile. I think it would work nicely too.
Wario Ware! Wario Ware! Wario Ware!
Here comes another match 3 game......oh wait, maybe it will be a match 4 game. That's unexpected!
Interesting ideas...
Advance Wars is possible, but I don't think there's an audience big enough for it to go mobile. Then again, I may be surprised.
Warioware is feasible due to its nature.
Dr. Mario or some other puzzle game would be good.
@aaronsullivan My kids won't stop talking about Pikmin 4, insisting it was announced as fact. Add that to this rumour and you know what my choice is.
Red yellow blue Pikmin come w/ the game as free, you have to pay to buy yellow, black and white to progress in the game, true free to start, or as we used to call it back when Doom launched, shareware.
Now if only I could find a phone or tablet w/ a floppy disk slot.
I will eat my own face if they don't make a WarioWare for mobile, eventually. Out of all Nintendo properties, it's the most likely to work on mobile platforms in its original form.
As for the others, I'm quite uninterested. I have a low-performance Android device and I don't think I'll be upgrading for these games... unless they're AMAZING.
I expect a steaming load. Not even Nintendo can make a good mobile game. Stick with your strengths.
iOS Bowling. Where you throw your hand like holding a wii remote.
@Tempestryke Hmm, I am thinking the exact opposite. They are gonna release games that everyone will mimic as usual.
@LinkSword Well Pokemon doesn't count, they have separate mobile plans and are already there. They sort of beat Nintendo proper to the punch on this. Maybe Zelda would be unexpected by most. I'm old school. I ate Nintendo cereal and it was half Mario and half Zelda. I still look forward to Zelda games more than Mario games but Zelda hasn't had a breakout hit in a long time.
@rjejr
But those are "hard disks"... just kidding... HIGH DENSITY BABY!
The best shareware game was Commander Keen.
@rjejr Well a 4th Pikmin game debuting on mobile would be unexpected too.
@aaronsullivan Pikmin makes perfect sense for a match 3 game, but more story driven than Shuffle, more like P&D or Big Hero 6. Photos on the top - fire, water, electric fence - means you have to match those color Pikmin on the bottom. Match many Pikmin to fight a bulborb or other creature. Heck even make it like Wondrflick and use your finger to flick the Pikmin. OK, no, don't do that, or Angry Pikmin. But those colored Pikmin, each w/ their own atttibutes, leads to any sort of app game. Now I fear Angry Pikmin.
Also, to this day I think Kirby Mass Attack started out as a Pikmin game, so something like that, 2D Pikmin puzzle sidescroler, could work as well. Maybe not today or tomorrow, but some day there will be Pikmin in an app game. Maybe a FPS where we play as a dentist and hunt Pikmin living on a reservation? Like Pokemon Snap, but Pikmin Shoot?
I imagine there is going to be a nintendo direct thursday.
Why
Because smash bros. This might be tied into it.
@KDChronos My local news team discussed that for a moment when they were discussing Nintendo's mobile possibilities. I highly doubt that will be the case since it would ruin their level design.
@ULTRA-64 I don't think Miyamoto would want a main-numbered entry in his baby franchise to be a mobile title. We should be good.
Edit: by 'baby franchise' I mean it's his pet project. I love Pikmin and I wasn't implying it was for little kids.
Whatever it is, I'm sure it'll be rubbish like 99% of smartphone games
Angry Yoshis? Flappy Toad? Goomba Crush?
@invictus4000 they could actually do that and some would throw money at it.
@Tempestryke ever heard of Kairosoft? Now there's some great phone games. Nintendo should just buy them out.
We're expecting a great Nintendo game, but it'll actually be some trashy, boring, run of the mill game that's so terrible, they'll drop out of the mobile business! I hope so, anyways.
I think mario maker level designer (which then you can play on the wii u) would be awesome and get people interested in the home console but also utilize the great touch screen interface on phones and tablets.
I'm sure, as with a lot of Nintendo reveals for these type of opportunities, it will leave a lot of people scratching their heads thinking 'wtf?!?'
The tweet does say it's actually a game, not an app.
Angry Metroids .....
Smart device mario maker would be incRedible if they could pull that off
Looking forward to finding out more about this. It's something Nintendo need to do so hopefully it's good.
What I expect (Pick one):
Nintendogs
Brain Training
Smash Bros Card Fighter (ala Hearthstone)
Mini Mario Maker (can only edit and cannot play levels)
@TomJ Pokemon Go is honestly what confirmed that none of the DeNA related mobile games will involve the franchise.
It's pretty clear that The Pokemon Company has their own plans for the franchise on mobile devices.
Wario With Friends.
Honestly one of the better options would be Brain Age, PictoCross, or Doctor Mario
"Mario & Wario"?
Pikmin 4, obviously.
I'm expecting a WarioWare game or a Brain Age game. I would love the hell out of a mobile WarioWare game, it just a type of game that can get so perfectly for mobile.
Angry Birdo? You launch eggs out of your face hole at structures built by your enemies.
Some Animal Crossing to sell those amiibo cards. I'm not looking after Happy Home Designer nor Amiibo Festival, but I would collect the cards with my daughter if they released some AC game for smartphones. But considering they are currently releasing 2 AC games, I highly doubt it's happening.
So let's see, I think it A) has to be a very well known franchise, B) has to appeal to the casual and mass market and C) has to be simple and slow paced (it's for mobile after all, no physical controls, limited power for most people, quick on the go playing...) so puzzles, turn based games, collecting games, Brain Training type stuff...
In other words, I have no idea.
Will it be part of Nintendo Direct?? Something is telling me 'Halloween' will be when we find out.
A Metroid and F-Zero endless runner... for the lolz
Zappy pica. You heard it here first.
F-Zero: Federation Festival?
@rjejr Microtransactions get rid of protestors outside your practice so you can continue.
@BrizzoUK That's pretty good.
So expect the unexpected? Well, the expected thing is that the first game is Mario related. That's what everyone is expecting. So... I'm gonna say it's not actually Mario related, and is actually either Nintendogs, Brain Age, WarioWare, or Animal Crossing.
The end of gaming is near.Everyone run to the hills.
There's that phrase again: 'IP'. What does 'intellectual property' actaully mean? It is just some meaningless soundbite used to link copyright, trademark and patents together, as if they are some tangible physical object. All governed by the sinister 'World Intellectual Property Organisation'. Seems like these corporations just want to supress creativity. Stop using this meaningless phrase! Instead of saying "bringing IP to mobile devices", say they are "bringing Nintendo games to mobile devices".
WarioWare and Dr. Mario would be two of the best things for mobile, if you ask me.
@LinkSword @aaronsullivan technically we were never warned that these games would utilize major IP, they simply said ANY IP is free game. But I'd be surprised if these games aren't related to Mario, Zelda, DK or AC (maybe even Splatoon since it's still hot), as these are Nintendo's more popular/well known IPs. Yes I even said Zelda, Zelda may not be a "sales juggernaut as you say LinkSword, but the IP is very well known (there are millions of xbox and PS fans that like Zelda but they just don't want to buy Nintendo home/handheld consoles, a mobile game could be the persuasion they need to come back to Zelda). Their first game will most likely be a major IP to kick-start Nintendo's mobile initiative, to get them known in the mobile space, after the first game and Nintendo is seen as a big hit, I could see smaller games like wario ware, yoshi, kirby, etc show up on mobile (they'll probably still rely on more major IPs). Only time will tell of course.
Pokemon is out of the question as I'm sure the Pokemon Company International will refuse, plus they are already making mobile games, do we really need more pokemon? I'd love for them to dig up old IPs with this, but the major IPs will have the best chance of penetration in that silly market.
@IceClimbers How is AC unexpected? Granted I think it will still be a Mario game just an "unexpected Mario game". But as expected games go, AC is an expected franchise to hit mobile (maybe the first? who knows) as Nintendo usually makes games with taking the Japanese market into account first and foremost. ACNL is the 6th best selling game worldwide on the 3DS with 9.17m, 1st=Pokemon X/Y, 2nd=MK7, 3rd=Pokemon OR/AS, 4th=SM3DL, 5th=NSMB2.
According to vgchatz, ACNL is the 2nd best selling 3DS game in Japan. I wouldn't be surprised if 50% of all ACNL sales are from Japan alone, that in itself means it's expected to hit mobile.
Pokemon is out of the question as the pokemon company is handling all things pokemon, that leaves the Mario franchise as top dog, with AC in 2nd.
Of course we'll just have to wait and see what first game will be and then what the next 4 games will be.
I'd love to see a non-mario game as the first initiative (as it would prove that they don't always rely on Mario), but it's their most well known franchise with the best chance of penetration in the worldwide market.
http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/sales/software/3ds.html
I really wish Nintendo would show the entire list of games that sold 1m and more. It would be so nice to see which games made it, same for Wii U games. Too much work?..... rolls eyes haha
@TsukiDeity Animal Crossing is only unexpected for the first game. It's definitely expected to be one of the 5, just not the first one.
Punch-Out Mobile!!
@zerotheclown A truley nightmarish vision.
I'll try to contain myself.
Animal Crossing: Love Hotel. You design the hotel and tend to the day to day management of employees
Maybe they are moving the new Star Fox game to mobile j/k
Maybe this is end of Console gaming as we know it.
iOS compatible R.O.B.? Duck Hunt/Punch Out crossover? Or even crazier, Drill Dozer 2!?
Mobile Mario Maker, combined with 3DS release. Yes, please!
Mario maker mobile: Free to play, but microtransactions for item-packs!
I hope it's Poke'mon: The Trading Card Game.
This is a bit disappointing: 100+ comments and nearly all of them fail to grasp the meaning of the term "expect the unexpected", coming up with the most standard game titles instead, simply because it is going to be mobile, so apparently it either has to be an endless runner or a puzzler, right? Go figure.
Oh, well...
