I know there are very likely rights issues still at play but I'm so sick of Ms Pac-Man not being included in Namco collections. It just makes it feel incomplete and she leaves a hole in the Switch retro library second only to Symphony of the Night😔
Edit: PC Engine games are up there too. Konami waste IP like I waste words😁
@Bunkerneath I got the physicsl release of Repentance on Switch 1 from Amazon Japan. Delivery costs and import taxes were offset by how much cheaper the sticker price was. Depending on how this is distributed, it might be worth a look a few months after release date
This is such great news as it filled a gap on both consoles and, more specifically, Switch. But a lovely refreshed version is just swell. Agree that this (and all Nightdive Switch releases) need a Switch 2 update with 1080p handheld/4K docked, 120 fps and mouse mode support. But I'm a patient guy so shall we agree that it is on my desk by January 1st 2026, Nightdive please?
@Noelemahc Blood would be really welcome. I'd like a port of Forsaken also, which is on other consoles. My tougher ask would be Half-Life 1, including the PS2 content
@Olliemar28 Yes, would be great to have. I think mouse controls would be my other main ask of a Switch 2 port. Like other Nightdive works, I'd love the N64 version (with its splitscreen multiplayer) bundled as well...
@Serpenterror great that you've stood up for a GBC classic! I thought about doing so myself but then thought that they probably meant NSMBU Deluxe, though I could be wrong
@DiggleDog completely agree. There is already a hint of whataboutery in the comments here and thinly veiled references to politics and agenda when these merely show the politics and agenda of the commenter themselves. Which is fine, of course, we are all allowed an opinion but I wouldn't be happy if an excellent journalist of a different political bent to my own was ousted for no reason other than "strategic realignment".
These culls if journalists are dangerous and scary and people need to realise they are already reading a fair amount of AI-generated slop and this will only get worse, if humans don't support other humans doing human stuff well.
Thank you for reporting on this @dartmonkey. Very sad news indeed as the contagion is not just within the game industry but quality games journalism. I have a lot of admiration for the work that these sites and journalists have produced and wish that more people who enjoy video games recognised this work that we all benefit from.
First order of business, keep reading lots of lovely Nintendo Life articles. Viva Nintendo Life!
@ear_wig having the games portable is also a draw. I tend to lose the fight for the telly in our house but having games like RE on the Switch with a pair of headphones in, works brilliantly
Such a weird coincidence that I was just playing this on my RGB30 yesterday (with quite poor framerates due to the patchy N64 emulation on that device, I might add). Will be nice to try this on Switch Online as never owned it back in the day, though I still have my copy of R4 on the PS1
@kendomustdie any gyro controls on this one? Apologies if mentioned and I've missed it. I've seen elsewhere that PS5 seems to have it and would then be surprised if that feature missed the Switch version as it has generally been strong in that area. Makes a the difference between being a definitely not and a strong maybe for me
This is honestly worse than a digital-only release for the pointless environmental impact, the rubbing-it-in-our-faces factor and the sheer tone deafness. I'd already written to Capcom Europe about the Fighting Collection not releasing physically and have done so again for this. Massive shame as was the first opportunity to own these games on a Nintendo console, with not a single one of them having been released on one before
I'm waiting on a... no wait, there is no physical Switch release in Europe. I'll wait for a sale, in that case. Capcom keep knocking it out of the park with their games and collections and then their European distribution keep striking out. To use a very non-European analogy
Wow, I think many of us here would profess some level of Nintendo bias but just looking at the top scoring games there, this is on another level. An entire top 20 with only one game from either of the other consoles... no sign of Rondo of Blood, Lords/Gate of Thunder nor Sonic, Streets of Rage, Phantasy Star or Shining Force games. Some personal taste would account for this but the overall pattern is too much. No Street Fighter II either, which makes me sad, though admittedly that is more subjective on my part
Finally got chance to read this. Great interview and has me excited for the remaster. Have the original on PS2 but never finished it. Might watch The Thing as a Friday night film this week... wife less keen on horror but hopefully the impeccable John Carpenter soundtrack and general vibes will pull her through
Strange to me that Chained Echoes doesn't have enough votes to qualify (at the point I am writing this, I should add). Sea of Stars has a very similar user score (as well as wider review scores) but has around 4 times the number of votes
Bit late to the party here as I'd flagged this yesterday to read later. This is a superb article and genuine insight into some of the inner workings of a slightly misunderstood chain store. I do find many of the Mike Ashley era decisions quite sad (including the end of trade-ins) but I've usually had a good experience with the staff. I recently picked up some nice Evercade cartridges there and had a good chat with the staff there about them who were genuinely interested and helpful. I fear articles like this are somewhat of an early epitaph for high-street game shops as their days may be numbered. Thanks Ollie
@HolyGeez03 You just have compared them😉 @LadyCharlie makes a good point in that we have seen a year of record layoffs at video companies both large and small and very little said about the corporate greed that has both brought the companies to these points and failed to mitigate the impact on their staff. Take-Two cut large numbers of staff with broadly speaking the same total wage as their 2 most senior executives. The small companies have tended to be more opaque about their executive salaries but they have had a similar model of trying to benignly buy developers up and then sack a good proportion of their staff when times get harder.
@Savage_Joe Present third-person in Spanish is viola. In French though, the target language of the initial phrase, viola is he/she violated... also viola.the instrument in French is viole
@Polvasti both are solid gold classics and I don't know if I'd say Rainbow Islands is definitively better but I agree it should be out ahead of this release!
Love that we are getting this following on from Bubble Bobble finally getting its Western Arcade Archives release and The NewZealand Story either side of the start of the year... we still need Rainbow Islands to complete the Taito platformer quadrilogy of power (as no-one has ever described them). The Switch keeps on getting the classics (along with the PS4 still it seems!)
@mrbogus @Teksetter I agree that it would be great to get more of M2's Japan-only output over in this neck of the woods. ESP Ra.De in particular, seems criminal not to have a worldwide release, digitally at least. I take other's points about just downloading from Japanese eshop but for some reason I never do (think there is perhaps a step too many to get Japanese eshop credit at a decent rate). I also don't like these limited edition releases but recognise there mightn't be a physical release for many games otherwise
@Mgalens Exactly! If it were to be Nightdive Studios handling this one, I'm sure they'd add in the N64 version or even port the maps back into the main engine. I believe they may have done something similar for the Forsaken remaster - though still waiting on a Switch port of that one! Want Blood: Fresh Supply also... and then Hexen... and then the time to play all of these. 😬
This would be superb. Agree with comments saying Quake 1 was more unique (and a much bigger deal at the time, of course) but loved this on the N64 and hope they include this version as they did for the previous game. They could also sort out the atrocious framerate issues the N64 port had.
Yes! Happy 30th Link's Awakening! Welcome to the decade of increased responsibility and expectations. You will soon wonder where it has gone... or was it all a dream?
This was my first Zelda and remains in my top 5 ever. I love all versions of it and still have my OG Gameboy cartridge on my shelf. For me though, each iteration improved on the last and, whilst the performance issues were disappointing, they never really interfered with my enjoyment. And frankly, the extra buttons make it more of a joy to play...
@wiiware I agree with you on pointers being better back on the Wii (still love playing House of the Dead, etc. on that system so Amen to that!) but the gyro is way better on the Switch (wasn't used for shooters on Wii due to use of IR pointer and bar) and combines with dual analogue in a way that makes even the tiny JoyCons viable (not competitively mind). There is a sizeable adjustment from it being pointer-based though as it is very different in practice and in feel
@wiiware As above, you definitely need to try dual analogue and gyro combined. Never going to be as accurate as mouse and keyboard but way more intuitive I feel. Your name suggests you might have played around with pointer controls back in the wiimote days and these are the modern evolution of that. Half a step further towards VR but without the motion sickness, perhaps!
@Pickettfury you are completely correct, of course. Gyro is a game-changer and supplements dual analogue in a way that you "can't unsee"...
I felt like Bioshock was designed to be a bit clunky in the grand survival-horror crappy controls tradition (not that is going for pure scares, mind you) so thought it might be okay without gyro. Not played it again on Switch though (curse you backlog and massive open-world Zelda games) and it maybe that lack of gyro has put me off starting its sequels too
Looks great fun. Is there any confirmation of gyro controls on Switch? I pretty much rule out FPS games without them as an option these days, with a couple of exceptions (e.g. Doom 3, Bioshock) where the action is slower-paced... this does not look to be one of those I'd make that allowance for
White 3DS XL that kind of matched Wii (and Wii U), 2DS for my then 6-year old son after he'd damaged the hinge on the former and then a New 3DS XL Samus Edition which I bought whilst the first was getting fixed. Best excuse ever! Love the clashing chrome colours of it, like having a Varia Suit in my hand... but with smaller shoulder pads
So gutted we never got a physical release in Europe. I wrote to Capcom Europe and expressed my dismay that I can't own a physical copy of the Darkstalkers games on a Nintendo console. Kind of made sense to have the Arcade Stadia digital only but to have a physical release of this and that might've helped with cannibalisation of sales but alas they never did. Loved the art on the bundle with SF 30th Anniversary Collection too but couldn't bring myself to pay Play-Asia prices
This is a superb idea and an excellent list. My only suggestion for the period you've struggled to cover is Tank as both Combat and Quadratank in Atari 50 are based on the 1974 original... is that too much of a long-shot though?
