Re: Nintendo Download: 15th December (North America)

Yoshi

I anticipate Super Mario Run will release at 10 AM Pacific Time (as in, about 21 minutes when this was posted).

Here's a little hint when it comes to Apple: almost everything important happens at 10 AM Pacific. Their keynotes always begin at that time. Big iOS updates are always released at that time.

Re: Yooka-Laylee's Wii U Cancellation is Only Due to Technical Challenges, Not the System's Woes

Yoshi

Damn....I can't help but feel a little betrayed. I know so many people wanted this on Wii U, it's almost like they should've developed with that in mind. It's a little selfish to think that, but on the other hand, a promise is a promise.

It's going to be a tough pill to swallow when the Yooka-Laylee socks finally come in. The excitement definitely is going to be a bit dampered.

Re: Video: We Compare the NES Mini Emulation With the Wii U Virtual Console

@DrRandle That's what happens when a game running at 60 fps is recorded or played back at 30 fps. When you get hit, and you see the "invincibility frames", they programmed it by alternating displaying the character's sprite and making it invisible, giving it a flicker effect. Back then, and even sometimes now, they created that flicker by alternating displaying the sprite and not displaying the sprite every frame. In a 60 fps game being recorded / played back at 30 fps, you either see the sprite completely disappear or not flicker at all.

Re: Rumour: Nintendo Switch Game Cards Limited To 16GB Size

Yoshi

So...why does the tweet say that 16 GB is enough space for a single layer Blu-ray disc when each layer on a Blu-ray disc is 25 GB? Anyways, truckloads of salt on this one. I know Nintendo excels at storage optimization, but if they want a lot of third parties to jump on board, they'll need decently sized media.

Re: Nintendo Switch to Reportedly Use USB-C for Charging, But Dock May Not Support External Hard Drives

Yoshi

@cleveland124 The Gamepad had two ports exclusively for charging. One on the bottom so you can put it in the cradle, and one on the top for charging while you play (or the only way to charge if you got the Basic). It's not out of the question to have two charging ports on the Switch. One port for the sake of portability on the go, another for convenience at home (meaning you don't have to plug in another cable when it's on the dock). Remember, the port on the bottom is most likely used for an output and USB-C accomplishes that, while charging at the same time.

Re: Gallery: Let's Take a Look at the Nintendo Switch

Yoshi

@Blastcorp64 When thinking about it, it's the only way that makes sense, though. The two Joy-Cons can be detached, held sideways and used by two people, and because the control stick has to be on the left, and four face buttons have to be on the right, one Joy-Con has to be different. And because that is asymmetrical, they had to make the Pro Controller the same way to match.

Re: Review: Rhythm Heaven Megamix (3DS)

Yoshi

Ok, I suppose I should give my quick opinion about this game....

The music, as always, is great. The game does start out much easier than previous games with shorter songs and simpler rhythms, but it does eventually increase in difficulty as you go on. But it's not as hard as it was previously.

I'm not sure if it's just me, but the timing seems to be much more lenient in this game. It definitely was the easiest to get Perfects on every rhythm game when compared to DS and Fever. It also is much more forgiving on the scoring. When you finish a game, you're scored on a scale of 100. Scoring 60-79 gets you an OK and scoring 80-100 gets you a Superb. If you're decent at rhythm games, you'll most likely get at least an OK every time. Those experienced with Rhythm Heaven will most likely score Superb most of the time. Good luck getting that 100, though. The score measures whether or not you hit each note correctly, but it also judges your timing as well. The highly useful timing display on the touch screen shows how well you timed each hit. Use it to your advantage when playing a march style rhythm game that requires consistent hits like Lockstep.

Despite how easy I've made the game sound up to this point, there is definitely one part of the game that is extremely hard. The Challenge Train is a mode where you have to play multiple rhythm games in succession with added challenges. At first, it'll challenge you to score a certain amount of points, or clear a game in three lives (making a mistake costs a life). But as you clear more challenges, you'll unlock more challenges that will require you to score Aces (perfectly timed hits), clear in two (or one!) lives, among others. Let's not forget that the speed of the rhythm game also gets bumped up as well. I'm not joking here. This mode can be brutal.

All in all, I highly recommend this game to anyone interested. It is a blast to play.

Re: Editorial: Rediscovering the Gems of the Wii U Library

Yoshi

I'm not a fan of replaying levels and saves that have already been cleared. So, for example, a Mario stage with collectibles that are greyed out / transparent because I already have them disappoints me on a small, minor level, nibbling away at me as I nevertheless dash for the flagpole.

You did mention this game later, but Super Mario 3D World is the perfect example of this. It just isn't as fun playing through the game multiple times to get the character stamps. Starting over is much more fun.

...Its treatment of save data, which rather bizarrely is less advanced than on 3DS

I know this is a different topic, but when I read this, my mind immediately jumped to how the Wii U handles Wi-Fi networks. You can only use one at a time, where the 3DS can pick from three. Why did Nintendo think this was a good idea?

Re: StreetPass Update Adds New Minigames and Premium Option to Hold 100 Hits

Yoshi

@Pink_Floyd You get six Streetpasses at Nintendo Zones. Currently, you are capped at 10 Streetpasses before the system stops taking them and you have to go to the Plaza to clear them out. With Premium, the cap is increased to 100. You don't get more Streetpasses at Nintendo Zones, it just increases how many people you can pass with before the 3DS cuts it off.

The first BoxBoy! will also go on sale later today. Not sure if Europe will follow.

EDIT: And the article has been updated with that info.

2nd EDIT: As promised, Nintendo put the first BoxBoy! on sale for $2.99, or $2.69 with the My Nintendo discount, down from $4.99.
