The Nintendo NX is dead, long live the Nintendo Switch. The successor to the Wii U was officially shown off today, and is a hybrid console powered by Nvidia tech which comes with detachable controllers.
During the short preview video, six games were shown off the console. We already know about The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but the five other games were all new - at least as far as the Switch is concerned, anyway.
Most exciting of all was a new 3D Mario game, which looks a bit like Super Mario 3D World. Equally striking was a Switch port of Bethesda's popular Elder Scrolls: Skyrim. We were also shown footage of an NBA basketball game (presumably from EA, although no one seems to be 100 percent sure at present) and a Switch ports of Wii U favourite Mario Kart 8; Splatoon also featured, though not everyone agrees on whether it's a port or a new game.
Plenty of developers and publishers have committed to the console already, so expect to see more games revealed over the coming weeks.
Let us know your thoughts on this very early line-up by posting a comment below.

They're not officially confirmed - they're just examples. Remember the games in the Wii U reveal? They didn't exist either.
King boo isn't in mario kart 8 is he?
i think these are better described as 'probable', than confirmed and official.
@deKay yeah, I was soooo hyped for Battlefield for Wii U.... then, well...you know.
But I feel a little more confident this go-around. I think Skyrim will make it
@Aeruon you mean you can SWITCH between held items?
Mario Kart Switch it is then!
Mario Kart 8 has an additional item slot + King Boo, and that Splatoon map looks new to me.
Whether they're ports or not, they've got extra features from the current games.
@deKay i'm pretty sure these are confirmed. Especially the third party games, Nintendo will be careful on that one. And Mario etc. was already revealed before.
And dont forget Sega did confirm that the Sonic 2017 game was coming to NX (now Switch). Though we dont even know what that game entails yet.
So we're at least up to 7 games now.
Seeing that mario just made me happy. Cant wait to see what the third second and first party companys will bring on the table.
@Aeruon That bugged me so much about MK8.
I do like that if these games do materialize as ports, they won't be just straight ports. There are new details shown in each one of these games (double items in MK8, new hairstyles/clothing in Splatoon).
Comparing it to 3D World is a bit weird. It looks a lot more like Mario 64. It's a 1 player controllable camera style. 3D World was a multi-player top-down fixed camera.
There's also Project Sonic 2017 and Just Dance 2017.
Why skyrim and not Fallout 4, seams odd!!!
Ok can we see footage of Dragon Quest XI now?
@JH64 Skyrim is getting a shiny new port for Ps4/Xbone. So it likely didn't take much to add Switch to the dev time.
I'm pretty grateful as I prefer TES to Fallout. Plus it is the more popular franchise. If it sales well Switch will likely get future TES and Fallout entries.
btw there are new 'official' breath of the wild videos presumably for/from the switch on both gamespot and ign.
I still haven't picked up Splatoon, maybe when I get the Switch I'll pick it up.
Man, if we're seeing all this new stuff for MK and Splatoon, lord knows what Smash has in store when/if that's revealed.
(C'mon HD Smash Run...)
That 3D Mario gives me a bit of a headache. Not really a fan of 3D World and its linearity. You don't have to make games for toddlers, Miyamoto, who have no 3D orientation.
That basketball game... take two is parent of 2k, probably NBA 2k17
The basketball game looks like NBA2k. Take Two is listed as a publisher and they own 2K.
@shonenjump86 i think officially, you don't say 'get the switch'. you cay' when i Switch'.
Looks like Splatoon 2 to me.
A decent line up so far! I'll need a couple more good games to be thoroughly convinced of a good launch lineup.
Pokemon Sun and Moon better be in the works for the Switch. Otherwise that would be a huge and I mean HUGE missed opportunity
NINTENDO Life, they aren't ports. Lol
@Jaredfrogman Yeah, that looks like NBA 2K to me. EA Sports' NBA Live series has been dead and gone for years.
It is 100% NBA 2k17. Could tell by the commentator's voice in the trailer. After playing thousands of hours of the series, I hear him in my dreams.
These games will come because the 3rd party games were probably already in development for the Nvidia Shield. Remember that the Shield 2 was already in the works then Nvidia went quiet before Switch was rumored to have a Nvidia chipset. Borderlands 2 should be available shortly after launch and Resident Evil 5. The important thing to note is that the Wii U had 0 portability and the Switch will have incredible portability to the largest gaming market, smart devices. Don't expect EA to put Battlefield 1 on this.
The Nintendo Switch will have a larger library in its first 2 years than the PS4 and the XBOX1 and will set the precedent for console design moving forward. What scares me is exploding batteries.
@Ryu_Niiyama Hope so!
Fallout 4 ultimate would be awesome though!!!
The Inklings in the Switch Trailer had alternate hair styles. Seems to indicate a new game.
@dumedum When was Mario revealed? The GC and Wii reveals both had Mario games that didn't exist.
I'm pretty sure none of the games shown, bar Zelda, have been confirmed - certainly not yet, anyway.
I'm glad that they revealed the console finally, but I would advise everyone to keep their hype in check. There is so much that we still don't know about this system. I have a laundry list of problems that would significantly dwarf my excitement for this system if they don't address them. A lot of these issues plagued the Wii U as well.
1. How much internal storage does this system have? It's going to be very annoying if this system has 32 gb again. It really needs to have more memory.
2. How is the UI? The WIi U interface was notoriously slow and cumbersome so I want to see that fixed.
3. How is the eshop? The WIi U eshop hardly had any sales for retail titles and was a mass of endless menus to buy simple things. I appreciated being able to finally buy DLC in bulk but it was dumbfounding how you couldn't buy multiple games at the same time. I really hope they implement a proper cart feature on the eshop as well as do more to give customers discounts/sales when buying games.
3. How will virtual console be handled? Will it start over from scratch again? Will it even have as many games as the Wii and Wii U virtual console? Do I have to buy my VC games again? Will the VC games remain at the same (overpriced) cost? I feel that VC need an overhaul and I hope that they do so.
4. Will it be region locked? I hope not because region locking sucks and it waaay outdated
5. Will games be tied to an account system like everyone else or will they stubbornly tie your games to your hardware? I really hope they have a true account system this time.
6. How will the online be handled? I just want to be done with friend codes for the system already. Just let me add as many people as I want
Did anyone notice something in Mario Kart 8? Maybe, I dunno, King Boo being in there?
We're getting DLC after all!
MK8 at launch for now. May even try Elder Scrolls for the first time.
@deKay
Never forget.

What if you don't want the screen??
@JH64 Who says Fallout 4 will not come at some point?
The New remastered Skyrim is shown now, because it's releasing end this month on PS4 and XBOne.
@Jamotello
Ha, nice one
@JH64 Then you're left with just the dock. A useless object on its own. The hardware is in the tablet.
The Nintendo Switch needs some:
RE7
Battlefield 1
Watch Dogs 2
All at launch
Apologize if already mentioned. The score graphic in the basketball game is mostly definitely a 2K one. Which is a huge get for the Switch, IMO
@PuzzleMaster7 - if that is accurate info, I'd say it will start off strong depending on what is in the package. Although $299 would probably be a sweet spot for most consumers
Am I the only one who noticed the picture of 4 people sitting down and playing Splatoon???!!!! 4 person local multiplayer hype!!!!
@GoldenGamer88 BAAAAAAAWWWWWW
@Yoshi yeah so you have to pay extra for the screen even if you never want to use it on the go!
Guys! Rumors say the Switch is region free! Nintendo is embracing the modern era!!
@DLevene17 Yep, local multiplayer between consoles is finally a thing on a Nintendo console.
"Officially confirmed"? ¬¬
This has happened before...
I would really hope there's some system in place to allow for previous purchases to be redeemed on this, like I have Mario Kart 8 on disc, bought all the DLC and have stuff unlocked, so it would be nice to get my save onto this, or have a discounted copy available....tie purchases to the account!
@deKay
They are officially confirmed. What we got in E3 2012 was a tech demo of Zelda. As in it was animated and not in play, therefore, there was no guarantee because we never saw the actual game running on Wii U. What we got 2 hours ago was purely gameplay and had no animation. So, all games we saw were guaranteed. It's very simple to understand.
Come on, Wii U and Switch are completely different in more ways thank you're thinking of/giving credit.
This thing, is not going to bomb, or struggle. Fact.
The Super Mario game caught my eye the most. Ports and third-party games are fine, but it's the new stuff from Nintendo what I'm interested in.
Skyrim <3
@Xaessya
Zelda 2012 - RIP in peace.
Never forgetti. Rest in spaghetti.
I hope those are not ports, I wouldn't pay for the same game again. I'm pretty excited, but I think we got to wait, let's hope it's as amazing as it seems. Battery life is also very important. Hope it turns out to be great!
The Super Mario environment looked a bit too much like 3D World to me. I'm hoping for a different look and feel to the world, not simply a moveable camera!
...Not really much of a "confirmed" list, but hey, at least there's Skyrim! I was just thinking about it today. Hopefully the Remastered version doesn't have quite as many kinks in it as...practically every other Bethesda game released since Morrowind...
@iGen can't you link to where these games are actually confirmed, rather than speculation they are confirmed because they were shown in the video?
@gcunit looks a lot more like Mario 64 than 3D World.
Any Retro Studios?
@YouSeemFRAZZLED Nintendo had to kill the Wii U for those ports. I highly doubt they were built from the ground up like they were for the Wii U.
The real question is 'Will my Pro Controller work??'
@deKay You crazy?
Mario64 looks like:
@gcunit That's what I mean. 3D World is more restricted, camera wise.
I'm so excited for the new 3D Mario. It looks brilliant, really. And for the first time in 6 years we can triple jump.
Oh, and Splatoon is looking neat on the Switch. Like, really neat. Well, except that we don't know whether there'll be motion controls or touchscreen controls.
But yeah, I hate that we're still in October. >
@DTFaux Don't forget Dragon Quest X and XI.
Hopefully it can also play Wii U and 3DS games.
@deKay
Why can't you see that these two situations are entirely different?
All of the shown games are coming because we've seen them being played by people, running on Switch hardware. Not only that, note the utter silence of the Wii U right after Star Fox Zero. The Wii U was neglected because Nintendo was preparing all of the shown games for us, so we wouldn't be left with nothing when this sucker releases, hence all these games being revealed for the Switch, because they were Nintendo's project for much of this year. Now they are showing the fruits of their efforts all year. Not to mention all of the third party games have all their respective developers on the Switch train.
A game being "shown" and a game being "played" are entirely different things. Zelda 2012 was shown. Mario Switch, Spla2n, and all the others were played. Because they were played and demonstrated, we know for a fact that they are in existence and are currently being developed. If they were not, what would be the point of Nintendo showcasing them? They need as many games as possible to release with their system. If they can't do that and only present a tech demo, like Zelda 2012, then what would be the point? Showcasing game prototypes lets people see how they play, how they look, and what the new system can accomplish. So it's basically a tech demo, that's an actual game, so it benefits everybody much better all ways around.
Every single thing adds up. Why is this thinking style so difficult for you to wrap around?
I just thought of something. We DID get Zelda 2012. It's called Twilight Princess HD. Same character models in both, same bosses in both, same environments in both. Both of them look nearly identical.
@Vee_Flames
Soon to be November.
I'm excited for them all. Even Skyrim
@deKay The difference here is that those tech demo games for the Wii U were shown a full year before the console was released. The Switch comes out in 5 months. Even then, most of the Wii U tech demos were eventually made into full fledge games.
I'd say splatoon is a new game but mario kart is a port. Remember all that time ago when Nintendo said that more mk8 dlc was to come
@GoldenGamer88 Wow, you saw like 3 seconds of footage of the new Mario game, and you've come to the conclusion that it's 3D World 2.0 and it's linear? Seriously? You're jumping the gun this early? Also, the triple jump returns (which was absent from 3D World), and the camera is behind Mario's back like in Mario 64. It seems like a blend of 3D World, Galaxy, and 64 to me.
EDIT: Also, a heart container is seen in the distance in that one area with the Bullet Bill. Again, it is NOT 3D World 2.0. Don't be so pessimistic.
@deKay It is much closer to launch of Switch than when Wii U was revealed. Also, despite being mostly souped-up Wii games acting as tech demos, most of the games shown off with the Wii U did end up coming to the system in some form.
Those games look great, but they aren't going to make me go and buy a Switch. I've already got a Wii U for Splatoon and Mario Kart, and a PC for Skyrim. The only game I want there is the new Mario game.
However, it's still a solid range of games and it gives me a lot of hope for the Switch.
The BasketBall game shown is 2K17. You can tell by the shot meter. I'm glad it's not NBA live. 😂
Wouldn't it be awesome if the dock had a disc drive attachment for Wii/Wii U backwards compatibility. Just a wish, but would make transition easy.
@iGen @CapeSmash @tjhiphop Until it's confirmed, it ain't confirmed
Zelda and Skyrim at launch for the NS what more do you need maybe Mario .
@deKay
Already is, Mr. Denial.
Read this article's title. And my very clear and simple comment.
@iGen Unless Nintendo themselves clearly state titles, which they have not done, it ain't confirmed. Highly likely, almost certain, yes. Confirmed? No.
@deKay
You think they're actually going to officially announce all of these titles will be coming out on Switch? We've already witnessed them running on it. They're in development and they will be shipped to stores. Nintendo isn't going to "officially" announce these titles for Switch. It's already obvious.
This is just sad.
@deKay Most important comment in the thread; well said.
Also, to the article author: "Some basketball game!"
Ugh. This is why we can't have nice things. Even the owners of Nintendo sites can't properly identify sports games. Look, I know sports and nintendo products don't exactly mesh, but do you guys even play any other consoles?
What would be truly marvelous is if the Splatoon game was an updated version and there would be an update added to the Wii U one and there was cross online play. Now THAT would be a dream come true.
So glad there is no wii music moment or Wacky controls shown.
I'm pleased so far, but still a bit bummed about Tegra. But it's really the only option as X86 + GPU architectural design would not work for the thermal or power envelope. (Small unit and battery powered)
@TechJunkie69 dont think it will happen add the Switch is ARM and the Wii U is PPC.
Which I am glad they are ditching ppc. its a dead tech. It's a holdover from the GameCube. As soon as Apple switched to Intel x86, PPC was doomed except for speciality platforms.
@AlexSora89 I doubt it. Wii U is dead to Nintendo. I bet the new Mario kart will not play online with wii u. Nintendo has never been friendly to old consoles.
I wonder when we will find out about the eshop, virtual console etc.
I hope I didn't buy all those classics on Wii U for no reason 😡
Oh and one more thing: SUPER MARIO GALAXY 3!!
@iGen
Good point yeah. Every game shown before a machine launches always makes it into the shops. Now excuse me, I'm off to fire up Freak Boy, Donkey Kong Racing and Project Hammer....
@deKay
Bruh, even Bethesda themselves confirmed it. Look at their Twitter.
Skyrim is being ported to a Nintendo system! It's a dream come true! 8D
@deKay I remember that Zelda demo... we never got a game that looked like that ;-;
@Nintendude789 I'm looking but I'm not seeing any confirmation of what they're developing.
@Danrenfroe2016
Which would make Nintendo's tweet a total blatant lie.
@deKay I wasn't saying anything was confirmed. People are right to be a tad sceptical, but the Wii U comparison is misleading for the reasons I mentioned.
@electrolite77
Did you even read what I had to say earlier?
None of those games were showcased during gameplay, close to the launch of the new console. And, the Donkey Kong Racing trailer was ANIMATED. Not running on real time hardware, so that one doesn't count at all.
Look, I don't speak for the past. I'm not saying that every single time real time gameplay is shown on a system that it will be released. The majority of what I'm saying is that these games shown this morning will come out. The fact is, it makes sense considering the dead-ness of the Wii U lineup, that they were busy with these other games. All of the ones shown today just will release. I know it for a fact.
Oh wait, I just remembered that the internet is a cynical and untrustworthy place full of people who don't take others' gut feelings for schitt. Yup, everybody's a stranger and totally not to be trusted. Only go by facts and history. Indeed.
Therefore, all of my previous statements regarding this issue are officially now null & void.
Who cares what anybody has to say anymore. What is even the point.
@iGen
Well. That escalated quickly.
@Fandabidozi
It sure did.
@iGen
Have a hug from me. 🤗
@DTFaux Actually, there are at least 8. Just Dance 2017 will be on it as well.
@CapeSmash It's not a thing of pessimism but rather caution. I don't wanna get all hyped up for it and then get a SM3DW 2.0. It doesn't even have to be a 3D World sequel, which looking closer at the clip might very well be the case, but just continue Nintendo's "Everybody should be able to play it so let's make our games as simple as possible" mentality. The mentality that said Mario 64 confused people because they didn't know where to go, what to do so let's get rid of that. I do get that 2D Marios sell better and from that standpoint, it does make more sense to make 3D Marios more linear so literal toddlers can play them, too. No challenging of their audience, no sense of exploration like in Mario 64 and Sunshine because oh no, people might not instantly know what to do and gasp have to think of a solution themselves!
Look, I do get what you're saying and yes, it is unfair to write it off when we know little to none about it. But I simply use the same caution that I used for most recent Mario games and while I might very well be wrong, I think it's healthier to be cautious about this game than get hyped and then be disappointed.
@Fandabidozi
Awww, thank you. <3
Only a few of these are games I would say are confirmed, being Skyrim, NBA, Mario, and of course Breath of the Wild. The rest are more like tech demos, like how we saw Art Academy and New Super Mario Bros. Wii when the Wii U was revealed. Those games came eventually, and they were only shown to demonstrate what the Switch is capable of.
As for the Mario game, It doesn't really resemble Super Mario 3D World all that much. Right off the bat, the player executes a triple jump, which implies a new Mario 64-styled game. Plus, 3D World's camera usually is positioned above and at an angle that allows for easy judgment of distance, where this one looks more reminiscent of Super Mario Sunshine.
@iGen
Steady on, I don't understand why you're getting so upset about this. The histrionics towards the end of that post are unnecessary. Pointing out that no games have been confirmed is not controversial (Nintendo would agree as they've said they're not announcing any games until 2017), it's a statement of fact. I agree it's almost certain they will come out but until they are confirmed, they are not confirmed. You may know it as a 'fact', but it's not a fact
Personally I think Zelda, a new Mario, plus souped-up Splatoon and MK8 updates will be the launch line-up and a strong one at that. However what we've seen of them is as meaningful as the footage of Donkey Kong Racing. We've seen people "playing" them on an advert. It could all be fake, mocked-up footage for all we know. No point getting upset about it, what will be will be.
I don't really get why some people are complaining about having to pay for the extra screen even if they don't want it. I didn't want a big low res screen making my Wii U controller cumbersome but I chose to buy that console so...
Even if you don't want to take the thing out of your house you can at least now have off TV play at a decent resolution rather than on the dull and murky Wii U controller screen.
@deKay everyone reporting as confirmed, they know things we don't and they confirmed.
@dumedum who confirmed? Where, exactly? Unless it's Nintendo, it isn't confirmed!
wild west mario
@electrolite77
What we saw does not equal Donkey Kong Racing, but I agree. I'm not so sure why I started this argument now, but I think I got simply pissed off when you know who kept saying "None of this is confirmed." "Nothing is confirmed." Switch obviously needs games, badly, so I'm just thinking that all that we saw and more was confirmed for the system. But whatever now, I'm done with this argument.
Discussion closed.
@nintendolife Skyrim has not officially been confirmed yet. Just look at Bethesda's response. They're onboard with the NX, but they haven't officially announced a Skyrim port. It was just a mockup made specifically for the trailer to increase interest.
@AlexSora89 I hope your right, because it would be awesome, But Nintendo's track record is to be very stingy with the old consoles.
@Danrenfroe2016
I don't have Michael Pachter's
malfunctioningcrystal ball, so I can't predict the future.@AlexSora89 lol. How True.
Can't wait for it I totally need it.😫 Look at how cool it looks I'm like drooling!!😆😍
