Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past had a fairly lengthy showcase on the Nintendo Treehouse stream today, giving us a good look at how well it's transitioned to 3DS. We also heard how fan-power made the localisation happen, with letters from fans in France apparently being the key motivation for Square Enix.
In any case, the demonstration ended without a release date, yet the game's Nintendo E3 web page has been updated - it looks set to arrive on 16th September. We should treat that as the North American release date, though hopefully PAL details won't be far behind.
Are you planning to pick this up in September? Let us know.

Hopefully PAL is before. Been waiting for this game a long time.
Ace Attorney & Dragon Quest? Bring on September
Can't wait for this game! Loved 8 on the PS2 and 9 on the DS!
Yes! And hey, I was just wondering last night when we're finally gonna get an official release date. So S-E basically has my wallet booked this September. End of.
I'm getting this day one as DQ7 has never been released in Europe so this is a brand new game, but crazy that they sit on this for years and then release it within days of Final Fantasy XV.
Love this series and have played up until V (thanks to some fan translation) now I want to find VI before this comes out! It's also releasing the day after my b-day so I am even more pumped to buy this my 2nd day into my 30's lol good way to start another decade of gamin.
My 3DS RPG backlog is getting deep!
Wow that is convenient! It releases on my birthday the only question is whether I want it day one or not though that really depends on what I am playing at the time.
I already pre-ordered it a while ago. I hope they release some cool DQ themes with the game !
Yes, please
Just to get it straight, DQ8 was also remade for 3DS in Japan and may be localised, and they are making a whole new DQ11 also coming for 3DS, no? Am I wrong?
All I can tell folks is if this game is even remotely close to the run time of the playstation DW 7, enjoy cramping hands =P i will snag it at some point, not sure if it will be on release though. I don't quite have as much drive as I own the ps version.
I'll definitely be getting this, and 8 although I have the ps2 version id love to have it on the go.
Nice! Now we need dates for Rhythm Heaven Megamix and Dragon Quest VIII, the latter of which is probably coming in early 2017.
I can see people are looking forward to this game from Square Onix.
Yes, that is how someone on Treehouse Live pronounced Square Enix.
@Bobb 7 & 8 were both confirmed for localisation! I think they were both meant to be out in 2016? & 11 is currently being made for 3DS & PS4. I don't think localisation has been announced yet?
@GraveLordXD @NyanyeWest Thank you, friends
I sure am looking foward to DQ8 and 11 too
Nice and it's released on my birthday.
My dear French gaming brethren...
I salute you
Part of me was really tempted to see if I can find DQVII for PSOne. Now I think I'm good.
Day before move in day at college...but that certainly won't stop me!!! Been waiting for this damn game for years, might have to set it aside for that first week or so of college. To finally have it, in my hands though....a little more patience won't kill me!
Already pre-ordered!!!!
This is a huuuuuuuuuuuge game, i'm talking about 300 hours huge.
120 for the main story, 300 for completion.
Will double dip to show support. It took too long for that game to show up in the west.
Yes, I just need this and DQ8 to complete my Dragon Warrior / Dragon Quest RPG collection on Nintendo platforms.
All hail the mighty slime!
Europe will get Dragon Quest VII on the 16th of September as well! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XDPvf_e5jk
@IceClimbers
RH Megamix was just released today.
The Dragon Quest franchise has had a lot of momentum lately in its 30th Anniversary year! I'm definitely getting Dragon Quest VII and Dragon Quest Builders in the autumn! Now we just need a confirmation of the Western localisation of Dragon Quest Heroes 2.
This is an obvious get, but they said they were releasing it in the summer. This was my go to game for the summer. I am getting old waiting for this game. I am a bit disappointed. I'm loving the graphics though.
My favorite series and I normally don't care about waiting. I just know I will we keep waiting for DQ8 in 2017 at this rate.
I'm unsure about VIII, but VII is a definite buy for me. Wonderful remake of a classic game.
Please, let it be September for Europe as well!
Dq8 is being made for the west, I preordered already with 7.
@retro_player_22 same for me buddy, good old gbc copies of 1&2, and 3
I think they mentioned in an interview if Dragon Quest Builders doesn't sell well in Europe and NA, then its likely we won't see XI outside of Japan. Square Enix just doesn't think there are enough fans of the Dragon Quest games, they mentioned people outside of Japan don't like the cartoony graphics and how it looks like a young kids type of game and so many potential fans feel too mature for Dragon Quest. It took fans in France and a petition to get 7 and 8. This is from an article on polygon.
Can not wait! This was one of my hopes fir e3. Get a date fir DQ7. Hopefully 8 and 11 and joker 3 are not too far behind too.
Heroes 2 too
@Waninoko It is! There's a link to the Europe trailer in post #30 & it has the September release date
I have never played a dragon quest game should I try VII or VIII
@NyanyeWest Awesome! Hope VIII will also get released in EU this year!
I hope they go all out and release some of the older games for the 3DS as well. Keeping my fingers crossed.
@bolt05 Those GBC Dragon Warrior games were epic, I got all three and all three of DS Zenithia DQ games too plus DQIX. Once I got DQVII and DQVIII (which I already got the PS2 version but I want the 3DS one for portability factor), that will completes the classic DQ for me.
Does anyone know if this has the same overworld/battle system as DQIX where you can pick what monsters to fight? Or does it use the random battles from the original?
Not a fan of the art style...looks like a fast food chain's idea of a fantasy world
Dragon Quest + time travel? Count me very much in.
I will buy this day one been wating far too long for this game.
