@nessisonett don't say Americans. There are plenty of us who understand this is serious. We just have to deal with a lot of ignorant lowlifes. There are antimask idiots in France, the UK and other places around the world. I've seen the marches. And I can't get my head around it. How anyone can be so selfish and ignorant. I have many friends in the front lines fighting this right now. One's working in a field hospital because hospitals have run out of space. I have friends who have been seriously ill for months with no sign of things getting better. We had family quarantined over Thanksgiving. I recently just lost a friend to Covid. He passed alone in his apartment. Someone else I know has lost 5 family members. I wish I could send these ignorant trash to a modern leper colony. Just leave them there.
So, the answer to the question posed in the headline is... because he wanted to? There's no mention of what he's doing to keep himself and others safe, it appears to be set up to encourage people to linger and touch things. This is insane and I can't believe Nintendolife is encouraging people to go. I don't want to see anyone losse a business, but this is rediculous. This is not only asking to go under, an irresponsible business move and selfish, it is guided by a wonky moral compass. Why not do all of this online, at least until everyone gets a chance to be vaccinated... and even then, until the numbers are under control? I just don't understand.
@Bustacap Lol... well. You have spoken so it must be true. I'm playing it and many other games on Game Pass. Games I thought about buying for my Switch, but no longer made sense to throw money at. I've easily saved at LEAST several hundred dollars not buying games for the Switch because of Game Pass. There are rpg fans that play on Xbox systems. Especially if they enjoy rpgs and are given the choice between essentially free and $50-60 on Switch. The problem is more that Microsoft hasn't done a good job of building a library of rpgs on their system (something they're already working to correct for their new systems). Since many gamers are at least two system gamers, they go for the rpgs where they can get them and then a system just kind of becomes their default genre system. I did that with PS4 for rpgs for a while, until I started shopping around for better prices. I would agree that this drop isn't exclusively due to it being on Game Pass, but I definitely think it's part of the reason.
I mean, to be fair... didn't you just have a video on your channel of a special edition, probably exclusively for press, that came with a variety of actual rice? 😜
2) Was this at launch? The Wii U was sold out nearly everywhere and hard to find. They sold over 400,000 the first week in the states; nearly what the Wii moved. And the Wii U was $50-$100 more, depending on the set you got.
The Wii U did well at launch. Its problems came later.
It's not like the concept hasn't been done before, but that doesn't mean I don't like it. I read first, then watched. I have to say, with the shows they chose to parody, the pixel art vibe isn't really selling the concept. I'll wait to pass judgement, but I didn't really feel the themes were well represented. There didn't seem to be the sort of immersion in each different show that other games that have done this had... and I feel like it's the art design that is the barrier. I have nothing against pixel art and it looks great, I'm just not feeling it. I know not every studio has the resources, but I would have loved to have seen more of a Rayman, animated vibe. But, not my game and I'm not a developer, sooooo... I should shush.
@Damo Based on the statement by the publisher on Steam forum, is it possible you got a different build than the current eShop version with the game-breaking crashes, etc? That could explain why you didn't experience some of the more horrific issues others have had to deal with.
I could MAYBE see 720p a locked 30fps when playing coop/multiplayer. Maybe. But across the board, docked in general? There are far more taxing games running at 1080p 30fps or better in docked. That is why I have no problem called this a cheap port. Hell... Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Smash run at 1080p 60fps docked, for crap's sake. And we should be looking at 720p, 30 handheld too. I'm tired of giving Nintendo a pass for phoning games in. Especially since this is the closest thing we're getting to a AAA/1st party holiday release.
It's Pikmin and as such, the game itself is fun and compelling. But given the quality of this port and the fact that the DLC was altogether around $10, and there's no touch screen support (which I quite enjoyed on the Wii U, but would be perfect for a true portable), the pricing seems off. $50 would be generous, but I'd pay given the new content and coop adventure. But that extra $10 stings when you think what should have been.
Now of course I'll wait for real confirmation and possibly the inevitable Digital Foundry breakdown before passing, but I won't be preordering.
It's a collection of three very notable games that as official releases, have never looked better. The text and other assets have been updated so that they don't look janky. Pick it up or don't. I've been annoyed with NoA's treatment of it's North American fan base for some time now. The really do not only take us for granted, but also have taken advantage of our love and support of the company.
But I really don't think this is one of those cases. If this wasn't part of the whole Mario 35th celebration, people wouldn't be complaining nearly as much. It's a solid value. The games look and play great. Could Nintendo have done more? Sure. Did they need to? Obviously not. Just look at the sales so far. And outside of scalper degenerates, most of the purchases are very happy gamers either enjoying a wonderful burst of nostalgia or even more exciting, experiencing these legendary games for the first time... and in their best form so far.
Yes... Nintendo half-assed this a bit. But nothing that they did (or didn't do) has affected these games or the fun they represent, so I'm not sure what the fuss in about.
After this is delisted, they'll either have these for individual purchase, weave them into the Nintendo Online Game Library or release a deluxe edition... maybe with Galaxy 2 included. Or maybe Galaxy 2 will be a full HD remake. Who knows? Until then, I'm going to enjoy these classics.
Also, I pre ordered through Walmart and got three sheets of '3D' Stickers; one for each game. There was also a little card with brief blurbs about each game. So if you wanted something a little extra, there's that.
I have absolutely no problem with the colors or the fact that it's Fortnite themed. Not every damn thing is about me. Reality, folks. I'm not huge on Fortnite myself, but many are.
What does bother me is that this is just more scalper heaven when there's already a dirtbag scalper issue with Switches. And there's an existing Switch supply issue. Why are resources being thrown into special editions when the average gamer/family can't even get a regular Switch for retail $$$. It's all kind of obnoxious.
@BANJO Much like other companies, I think the move is to drive digital sales. Physical will sell out and the only alternative to get the game before the deadline will be digital. I guarantee even the saltiest gamer will be hitting that download button before midnight.
I have a feeling Galaxy 2 is being held in reserve for future announcements. And other 3D Allstars collection? Separate eShop download? They've got to spread this out as much as possible.
Coupled with the glasses-less 3D concept that they had for the screen, that woild have been one insanely innovative system well ahead of it's time... with a huge price tag and a confused consumer. It's brilliant, but I think between battery limitations, price and trying to position the system in the market, they may have had another 'Wii U'. The Gamecube didn't sell that well to begin with and it was a wonderful system at a solid pricepoint. I'm glad they streamlined the concept. I do wish they had pursued the Tako path, but with the Wii motion controls and hit the market with a system that was hi def, powerful, innovated with motion controls (and launched with the full Wii MotionPlus functionality), DVD playback and better Wifi, since wifi was key and 'always on'. It would have set them up for a much more capable Wii U as well. Wishful thinking, I know.
For me, Super Paper Mario was the most creative and enjoyable game to carry the Paper Mario flag. The story, the unique characters, the worlds... even the visual design and music. Loved it. As far as the 'core' series, I loved The Thousand Year Door. The original was fun and fresh at the time, but TTYD took it all to another level. I enjoy some of the gameplay concepts brought forward in Color Splash and Origami King, but as full game concepts, they fell flat. I hate to say it, but I feel like Miyamoto san had a painful amount to do with the series decline.
I love the games and was actually looking forward to playing them anywhere, but I’ll definitely be waiting on reviews and Digital Foundry’s assessment. Then I have to decide if it’s worth dealing with the huge download.
@TeslaChippie no one says it was, just that it steals the look, feel, overall presentation and 'Direct' of Nintendo. That is Nintendo's brainchild and preferred method of communicating new games, content and gaming events. And at the very least, if they're going to steal a concept from top to bottom, the least they could do is give Nintendo a nod by featuring games coming to the Switch as a grouping.
@mousieone actually, yes. It is. What is the first thing that pops into mind when someone says 'there's a new Direct out'? That is branding. It's not about intellectual properties or trademarks. Brand is much more than that.
I’m confused. Why and how is it called a Direct if it isn’t exclusively game announcements for Nintendo platforms? That seriously muddies the ‘Direct’ brand. They could have at the very least broken out those games confirmed for the Switch.
@Kevin_13 it’s not harsh at all. What should we call them? Opportunistic scum? There are dirt bags buying up all available stock wherever they can find it and scalping. There’s a rule I live by whenever I’m at a crossroads in my decision making: when in doubt, don’t be a dick. Far too many people lack this rule in their lives.
Not holding my breath for NoA to do anything like this. They’ve stopped giving a damn about North American fans and consumers a long time ago. As for scalpers, I hope the karma bus hits them hard... then backs up.
@Ogbert actually that's not even remotely true. He changed the entire course of development of the game on more than one occasion. He had them scrap the original game completely and start over from scratch and gave them the direction to make it part of the Link to the Past world. He torn into mid-development play mechanics and sent them back to the drawing board. He was also the one who finally geeen lit the game. We would never have gotten the game we got if it hadn't been for Miyamoto's guidance and insight. Not even close.
@RileyR when you explore ideas and concepts and take chances in order to innovate, not everything will resonate with everyone. Honesty, I wish Miyamoto would make another Zelda game. I miss his vibe. Breath of the Wild was cool, but it didn't have the charm and personality of past games, imho. I can't put my finger on it, but I love replaying A Link to the Past and A Link Between Worlds, but I don't feel like replaying BotW.
Probably THE most overstated headline from the site yet. Ridiculous. How about doing some real reporting and chase down numbers for digital sales, how many cancelled physical and downloaded instead, follow up on reported physical shortages, check out the surge of resellers and price gouging?
At the end of the day, none of this matters as the game has sold insanely well and will continue to do so. Painting these sales numbers as some sort of massive failing is poor journalism. Tabloid headlines.
And are you absolutely kidding me? Reporting that physical sales were up from before the launch of several AAA titles as if it were a revelation? 'Physical sales up after big games launch before/at the start of massive lockdowns and quarantines around the globe'... You don't say! wow.
@GFoyle Thank you for this. It's nice to have input from someone who has played these games in depth with a critical eye outside of a structured review. I'd love for a a patch or update to arrive and smooth this out, but I'm not holding my breath.
Here's what makes this DOA for me; the douche hammers at Alienware. They're digusting. They steal... outright steal an entire concept and design from top to bottom, even the key features and functionality. Then try to pass it off as innovative and their own. Then outright bash the original - even though it really isn't direct competition (pc gamers vs console) - and say some pretty stupid and nasty things (they've even commented how the Switch's HD rumble is weak crap compared to what they're offering)... all the while never once crediting the design prowess of the company that originated the concept. They then get a few media outlets either on the payroll, or somehow compromised to bash the original system as well and sing their praises (I forget the name, but one review site was even more ridiculous). That all makes them deluxe ishburgers. Just arrogant scum. I hope Nintendo sues them out of existance.
This has been bugging me. Stole his idea? That would be a huge nope right there. All logic has been thrown out of the window in favor of some bitter dude's romanticized version of video game history. The VMU was released in 1998 (the Atsumete Godzilla: Kaijuu Dai Shuugou VMU in July of '98. Before the DC even launched). When was that article from? I'm thinking '97 at the earliest. The Dreamcast had already been in development for some time at that point. It launched in '98 for crap's sake. The notion that SEGA somehow saw this small article in an American magazine probably under a year from the launch of their new system and completely altered the course of their development AND production is absurd as the very least, insane if you also consider the DC was already in production around late spring/early summer of 98 (maybe earlier). Meaning the final design had to have been approved LONG before the production lines were tooled and ready to go.
Now consider once again that the VMU was released DURING the production of the DC, before launch and you can see what a self-important ass this guy really is. What a load of crap. Trying to insinuate himself into video game history by taking credit for something with only a passing similarity; a screen. The VMU is a standalone handheld with a d-pad and buttons, a memory card that can swap files independently by coupling two of them and an integrated part of the overall controller design, not a single use peripheral designed as an afterthought. I like his idea. It's nice. Pretty much everyone who's cheated or been cheated on because of a lack of a second screen had the idea in their heads, but he executed. It's nice. But it's not a VMU.
Edit: Magazine article from September of 97. So yeah. According to this guy, a year out from the launch of their last hope for relevancy, SEGA saw this small article buried in an AMERICAN magazine (let's take a moment to remember what SEGA of America's and SEGA of Japan's relationship was like at the time. People fired, people feeling betrayed, people quitting en masse. SEGA of Japan loathing SoA's decisions, ideas, etc), stopped design and/or production of their controller and memory card solution (which would necessitate sourcing new materials and securing new production partners... right before launch... after designing from scratch - in a few months - this new handheld/memory card/screen hybrid that would then necessitate a redesign of the controller to accommodate said second screen) to steal this loose concept, transform it completely and all while risking missing a launch date that could make or break them so they could get his idea - which was not a handheld or memory card or integrated with a controller - to market. Yeeeeah, ok dude. Give me a break.
And yet again the North American market - a market which has done more than it's part to help keep this company afloat during all of its biggest mistakes and miscalculations- gets the middle finger again. 'Thanks for being unreasonably and impossibly loyal fans... now get bent'. Well... NoA can go screw itself.
The moment gaming goes cloud only is the moment I'm done with contemporary gaming. If I can't truly own a game or play when and where I want because I'm tethered to the cloud, I have no use for it and I'll be retro gaming exclusively. There are so many games I haven't played that I'll be fine.
@Prizm They're not. It's their fun take on the old Yule Log video. A wierd, quirky, regional American kitsch 'tradition' that has kind of been mememified these last couple of years.
@PoorGeno yes! I'm glad someone else got it. It's actually big this year. There's a similar video I just watched on HULU (where there's an entire catagorie dedicated to this sort of video) that is nothing more than Terry Crews painting a holiday scene Boss Ross style by the yule log and xmas tree. Well played, Nintendo marketing. Since it's very much an American thing with it's roots on TV in the boroughs NYC, I'll give Nintendolife a pass on completely missing the point.
I now feel even luckier to have had the chance to see it and play games on it twice at Midwest Gaming Classic. It's a piece of gaming history and the physical evidence of Nintendo's huberis and folly during the 16 bit era. And it's just cool.
@Pichuka97 Nintendo no longer gives a rat's ass about the NA market. We've served our purpose and we throw money at them no matter what they do, so they're done with us. They don't feel the need to address the fans that pulled them through the dark times and carried them through every mistake. They're back to being arrogant again. When's the last time they did anything special for the NA market or even acknowledged us? Years ago. It's been years. And NA Club Nintendo has been a joke for a very long time.
Here's the thing... I think people overlook the fact that so many amazing games already exist with plenty more to come before this business model wrecks gaming as it currently exists. So many that - in an 'ok boomer' moment - I no longer care about Nintendo and what a sh*t company they are on a course to become. I no longer care what they and others are going to do to gaming. Or what the next gen of gamers will inherit. All digital library and streaming... where no one will truly own anything ever again... and this mobile business plan. On it's way to consoles.
They have already abandon and actively ignore the NA market with regards to their fans and supporters. There is no way I could play and beat every amazing game that now exists or will exist in the next few years.
So screw this and screw subscriptions, clubs and season passes... and screw the business suits at Nintendo. I have more than enough to play til I die.
Sadly, depressingly not unexpected. Bumped by the most overhyped game of the year and the crap series that never stops being the poster child for games that ultimately suck or are painfully mediocre and lazy retreads, but are carried by their fanbase (see also Madden).
@gaby_gabito the game actually retails for 39.99 US, but most places I've seen already have it for between 30 - 35. It's also showing up as a Black Friday deal, so if you can get it for the $30ish price, adding the sub is reasonable. Even at 40 it's not awful.
Nintendo of America have proven themselves to be completely usless to Nintendo fans and loyal customers. The have done absolutely nothing for this region, have offered nothing and continue to completely ignore their base. It's not as if we're asking for handouts. We're willing to pay for fun and unique sets like this. They refuse to listen. Even a little. They can kind of kiss my lower cheeks.
@rjejr But the thing is, if you look at the target demo as represented in their ads, it doesn't appear to be the case. It appears to be aiming to bring in new gamers and people who only play their 3DS/2DS; the new NEW 2DS XXXL. Don't forget $10-30 for a quality kickstand or Lite case w kickstand. I personally wouldn't want to play multiplayer with a screen that size. The current Switch is only barely at a decent size for tabletop.
Personal preference, but if I'm going to get a 2nd Switch I'm not going for the downgrade, I'm going for the new iteration with FAR better battery life... and the one that is still an actually Switch... and not just the innards. And if I'm going for a 2nd Switch, I already have one so I'm not in any hurry. I'll take my time and save that extra $100.
Don't envy ppl getting the 1st Lites off the line. Look at all of the issues with the current Switch that are only now getting addressed. With the Lite, you can't just send your controllers off. You ship your entire system off for repair. If that's your only Switch, that sucks.
@ChessboardMan right there with you. Not the only time this has been a thing lately, sadly. This has been news for some time. They even had a tree house segment where they played and talked to the developers during E3. AND an E3 trailer for it. Slow news days?

I’m confused. Why and how is it called a Direct if it isn’t exclusively game announcements for Nintendo platforms? That seriously muddies the ‘Direct’ brand. They could have at the very least broken out those games confirmed for the Switch.
Re: Slowly But Surely, Nintendo's North American Repair Centres Are Coming Back To Life
@sixrings given all of the known issues with the Switch and its controllers... even acknowledged by Nintendo... this is an extremely ignorant comment.
Re: Nintendo Thwarts Scalpers With Animal Crossing amiibo Card Restock
@Kevin_13 it’s not harsh at all. What should we call them? Opportunistic scum? There are dirt bags buying up all available stock wherever they can find it and scalping. There’s a rule I live by whenever I’m at a crossroads in my decision making: when in doubt, don’t be a dick. Far too many people lack this rule in their lives.
Re: Nintendo Thwarts Scalpers With Animal Crossing amiibo Card Restock
Not holding my breath for NoA to do anything like this. They’ve stopped giving a damn about North American fans and consumers a long time ago. As for scalpers, I hope the karma bus hits them hard... then backs up.
Re: Fans And Analysts Ponder The Eternal Question: Can Nintendo Survive Without Shigeru Miyamoto?
@Ogbert actually that's not even remotely true. He changed the entire course of development of the game on more than one occasion. He had them scrap the original game completely and start over from scratch and gave them the direction to make it part of the Link to the Past world. He torn into mid-development play mechanics and sent them back to the drawing board. He was also the one who finally geeen lit the game. We would never have gotten the game we got if it hadn't been for Miyamoto's guidance and insight. Not even close.
Re: Fans And Analysts Ponder The Eternal Question: Can Nintendo Survive Without Shigeru Miyamoto?
@RileyR when you explore ideas and concepts and take chances in order to innovate, not everything will resonate with everyone. Honesty, I wish Miyamoto would make another Zelda game. I miss his vibe. Breath of the Wild was cool, but it didn't have the charm and personality of past games, imho. I can't put my finger on it, but I love replaying A Link to the Past and A Link Between Worlds, but I don't feel like replaying BotW.

Re: UK Charts: Animal Crossing: New Horizons Sales Fall By 81% In Disappointing Week For Nintendo
You don't say! wow.
Re: Review: Psikyo Shooting Stars Alpha - Great Games Shamed By Horrendous Input Lag
@GFoyle Thank you for this. It's nice to have input from someone who has played these games in depth with a critical eye outside of a structured review. I'd love for a a patch or update to arrive and smooth this out, but I'm not holding my breath.
Re: Alienware's Impressive Switch-Like Concept UFO Wins Best-In-Show Award
Re: Mount Your Switch Or Switch Lite Onto Your Pro Controller With This New Accessory
This looks exceedingly uncomfortable.
Re: 'Secret Screen' Nintendo 64 Prototype Resurfaces More Than 20 Years Later
Re: Animal Crossing: New Horizons Pre-Order Bonuses Appear, And You Have Lots To Choose From
And yet again the North American market - a market which has done more than it's part to help keep this company afloat during all of its biggest mistakes and miscalculations- gets the middle finger again. 'Thanks for being unreasonably and impossibly loyal fans... now get bent'. Well... NoA can go screw itself.
Re: Former Nintendo Of America President Reggie Says The Future Of Games Is In The Cloud
The moment gaming goes cloud only is the moment I'm done with contemporary gaming. If I can't truly own a game or play when and where I want because I'm tethered to the cloud, I have no use for it and I'll be retro gaming exclusively. There are so many games I haven't played that I'll be fine.
Re: Random: Nintendo Posts 30-Minute Video Of Someone Playing Switch By A Fire And Making A Sandwich
@Prizm They're not. It's their fun take on the old Yule Log video. A wierd, quirky, regional American kitsch 'tradition' that has kind of been mememified these last couple of years.
Re: Random: Nintendo Posts 30-Minute Video Of Someone Playing Switch By A Fire And Making A Sandwich
Re: The Nintendo PlayStation Prototype Is Being Auctioned Off Early Next Year
@TurboTEF It was really a fun trip through gaming history.
Re: The Nintendo PlayStation Prototype Is Being Auctioned Off Early Next Year
I now feel even luckier to have had the chance to see it and play games on it twice at Midwest Gaming Classic. It's a piece of gaming history and the physical evidence of Nintendo's huberis and folly during the 16 bit era. And it's just cool.
Re: Talking Point: What's Happened To Switch's NES And SNES Games, Nintendo?
@Pichuka97 Nintendo no longer gives a rat's ass about the NA market. We've served our purpose and we throw money at them no matter what they do, so they're done with us. They don't feel the need to address the fans that pulled them through the dark times and carried them through every mistake. They're back to being arrogant again. When's the last time they did anything special for the NA market or even acknowledged us? Years ago. It's been years. And NA Club Nintendo has been a joke for a very long time.
Re: A New Paid Membership Service Is Being Added To Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp
Re: UK Charts: Luigi's Mansion 3 Falls To Fourth As Death Stranding And Call Of Duty Take Command
Sadly, depressingly not unexpected.
Bumped by the most overhyped game of the year and the crap series that never stops being the poster child for games that ultimately suck or are painfully mediocre and lazy retreads, but are carried by their fanbase (see also Madden).
Re: Review: Just Dance 2020 - The Same Old Song And Dance Perfected Over 10 Years
@Sandro89 well now, that was judgy and ignorant.
Re: Review: Just Dance 2020 - The Same Old Song And Dance Perfected Over 10 Years
@gaby_gabito the game actually retails for 39.99 US, but most places I've seen already have it for between 30 - 35. It's also showing up as a Black Friday deal, so if you can get it for the $30ish price, adding the sub is reasonable. Even at 40 it's not awful.
Re: Free Update For Contra: Rogue Corps Adds Hardcore Missions, New Weapons And Much More
Have they added a 'this game no longer sucks' mode? If not, hard pass...
Re: Gallery: Unboxing Zelda: Link's Awakening Limited Edition On Switch
Nintendo of America have proven themselves to be completely usless to Nintendo fans and loyal customers. The have done absolutely nothing for this region, have offered nothing and continue to completely ignore their base. It's not as if we're asking for handouts. We're willing to pay for fun and unique sets like this. They refuse to listen. Even a little. They can kind of kiss my lower cheeks.
Re: Guide: Which Switch Games Are Not Compatible With Nintendo Switch Lite?
Re: Trials Of Mana Remake Headed To Nintendo Switch Next Year
@ChessboardMan right there with you. Not the only time this has been a thing lately, sadly. This has been news for some time. They even had a tree house segment where they played and talked to the developers during E3. AND an E3 trailer for it. Slow news days?
