Developed by Taiwan studio Glass Heart Games and inspired by titles such as Salt & Sanctuary and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Vigil: The Longest Night is a gothic Metroidvania which places you in a grim, horror-filled fantasy world and expects you to unravel various mysteries in the role of Leila, a member of the Vigilant Order.
As you might expect from this style of game, Vigil: The Longest Night unfolds in a slightly non-linear fashion, with areas of the map opening up as you collect the correct items and gear. You can equip various weapons and armour, with the former coming in four different types which can be toggled between during combat. Slaying enemies earns you experience points and levelling-up grants skill points which can be used to unlock new moves and techniques in each weapon type's skill tree. You can also bolster basic skills in this way, improving your chances of success.
Visually, Vigil: The Longest Night is a real treat; the backgrounds are gorgeous and some of the monsters are truly grotesque – especially the boss monsters, some of which fill the entire screen. However, many of the characters resemble flat paper mannequins thanks to the fact that each limb is animated independently, and while this approach certainly gives the game a unique feel, we couldn't help but yearn for the silky-smooth, hand-animated visuals of Symphony of the Night or Dead Cells.
Still, there's no denying that in terms of presentation, this is something of a treat, and that extends to the atmospheric soundtrack, which comes courtesy of Jouni Valjakka of metal band Whispered. The music does an outstanding job of adding to the sense of foreboding but also excels at accentuating those moments of peace, such as when you're located in a friendly village or town.
Vigil: The Longest Night isn't the toughest Metroidvania you'll encounter on Switch – nor does it possess the most interesting plot – but it has plenty of secrets to uncover even after you've finished it; it's just a shame that Switch owners have to endure a host of technical problems, such as long load times and an inconsistent frame rate. These unfortunate issues aren't enough to totally sink the game, however; if you're in the market for more Metroidvania goodness and you like your games dark, grimy and gothic, then it's certainly worth a look.

This looks extremely gross and nice
Must say the visuals make this game tempting. Besides being fairly competent to boot. Thanks for the review.
I really wanna like this game, but like the review said beware that it’s nowhere near optimized for the switch at this point. Long load times have been the least of my problems in my experience. If I even have this game running (even while the switch is in sleep mode) for more than an hour or 2 the program hard crashes and I lose all my progress. Which makes no sense cause I was saving quite often, sometimes with multiple save files. Seriously what a joke of a release. Getting tired of these half baked game releases with the “get it out there, fix it later” mentality. Wait till they decide to patch this mess.
@Zach1122 I agree. I had the same experience and found the game to ultimately be unplayable. The load times are the longest I've encountered on the Switch. The game also crashes every hour or two and then you're dealing with an initial load time of 3+ minutes, plus whatever load times you need to go through to get back to where you left off. This was the first game I requested a refund for through Nintendo and they made a one time exception. I'm surprised to see NL give this a 7. I would give it a 3-4.
@benchan for sure. It’s becoming as nauseating to me.
Would a new Castlevania game in the style of the gba/ds games get described as a Metroidvania? Cause this looks like it's just going for a Castlevania vibe straight up.
Looks neat; listened to some of the soundtrack on YouTube. What an aural feast!
I'm digging these mini reviews!
I miss the days when this website reviewed every digital game, and in a timely manner.
I bought this game and enjoyed it for a while, but the loading times and crashes became so frequent and game-breaking that I had to put it down and contact the developer about it. They responded telling me that a patch was on the way, so hopefully that gets resolved soon. Everything else about the game is pretty good, when it works.
whoa, 3 minute load times?! That's way beyond what I'd be willing to tolerate. I'm also curious how bad the frame rate is. Does it ever hit 60? Is it in the no man's land of 35 to 55? Below 30fps? Hopefully the devs can patch it up soon!
Good game, buy it on PC, got it.
This one almost picked my interest. Visuals are nice and the game style is my cup of tea but after I read some people commenting here about crashes and loss of saved progress, I'd say it's long load times are the least of its problems. No way I'm gonna pay for it. If it gets fixed, I'll think about it
I'm interested, though not in a buggy Switch port. Steam version doesn't seem to have any complaints about performance, so I'll get it there instead.
@Damo Out of curiosity, did you experience the load time issue and crashing that myself and many others had? I ran the game of the Switch's internal memory and a microSD and found it to be very long in both instances. This game is more of a test of patience than anything else and I had to stop playing after the third boss. How much time did you spend with the game? There are so many load screens in this game. The game is segmented into countless areas and even going into a small room to talk to an NPC can take 15s to get in and 30s to get out of the room. I'm surprised to see you give this a 7. I felt like this game should not have been released on the Switch in this state.
@MisterMan I didn't experience any crashes and the load times, while annoying, were no where near as bad as the initial load time when you boot up the game. The technical issues are disappointing but they ultimately didn't stop me enjoying the experience.
@Damo Interesting. Did you complete the game?
This game is in horrendous technical state on Switch and I would recommend everyone to wait until it gets patched. IF it ever will get patched. The game crashes every 10-15m or so, the constant loading times are absolutely unacceptable (first load takes 1-2 minutes, not joking!), the game just freezes for 20-30s whenever you put a new gear on, game sometimes doesn't recognise you've just saved it (you save the game, next time you load the game, save is not there), music sometime plays, sometimes does not... the horrendous English mistakes, errors, typos, missing characters... honestly, I wouldn't bother with this until they fix all the game-breaking errors.
@MisterMan I did, this game in this state should not have been released for sure. And the credibility of this website is really getting questioned here, with scoring this totally broken game 7/10...
A big thank you to you fellow commenters above, to point what the review should have emphasized.
Broken/unfinished game should not have any note
@MappingExpert I agree. I'm curious how much time the reviewer spent with the game. You bring up a lot of other issues with the game that I didn't mention earlier. There's so much to list that needs to be fixed with this game. I honestly can't believe this game was released in this state. If anyone buys this game based on this review, they will be extremely disappointed.
@Zach1122 Yep, too many games are starting to feel like public beta tests. I stopped buying games at launch years ago, I always wait for the first wave of patches before I buy things I’m interested in.
Made an account just to comment on this. I spent about 8 hours playing this game and had to uninstall it. It has some major bugs to work out before you consider purchasing. The game would crash on loading screens frequently losing 20 to 30 minutes of play time. "Oh why don't you just save more often" right? Sure, except the game would ignore your manual saves relying on some arbitrary auto save and bam all that hard exploration lost. The final straw was in attempting to circumvent this I made it to a save point, fast traveled and made 2 manual saves, and restarted the game. Upon loading the save suddenly my main magic spell I'd been using simply wouldn't work. My entire build had incorporated this spell and suddenly it wouldn't work. All the other spells and items worked but bc I had tried to out smart the bug I ruined my playthrough. TL;DR The game has some moderate to severe bugs that I recommend you wait to get patched out before playing.
Shame about the technical issues, think I'll stay away and see if the patches make a difference, otherwise I'll pick it up on Steam whenever I get around the replacing my old computer.
I was thing about this game for bit but desided not to get it
@Chimp9000 Sorry you had such a bad experience but that falls in line with what everyone else experienced with this game. @Damo again, how much time did you spend with this game? Is this a mini review or a first impression after playing an hour or two and reading some reviews online. I was hoping NintendoLife would offer a warning to potential buyers of this broken game instead of this uninformed and misleading article.
@MisterMan I finished the game in around 15 hours, but I spent a big chunk of time exploring and trying to get as many items as possible.
As noted in the review, there are technical issues which need addressing and, had these not been present, I would have perhaps scored it even higher than 7. However, I didn't experience a single crash during my time with the game (I played mainly handheld, not sure if that is significant), nor did it fail to save my progress at any point.
The load times and occasional frame-rate stutters (as noted in the review) are annoying, but they didn't get in the way of me playing the game – so I'd contest your assertion that it's "unplayable" on Switch.
@Damo OK. Thanks for the response. I strongly disagree with your assertion that this is a playable game on Switch. I would encourage others to check out Reddit on the Switch performance before purchasing. This reviewer's experience is vastly different from the majority of the rest of us.
@MisterMan This could potentially be something related to what kind of SD card is being used in the Switch, who knows? I do find it rather odd that I've not experienced a single crash during my time with the game. I agree that there are technical issues - the stuttering frame rate being the most obvious - but I enjoyed the game regardless.
Have you been playing docked or handheld, out of interest?
@Damo I played mostly handheld and a bit docked just to see how it looked on the TV. I also ran the game of the Switch's internal memory (per the developers suggestion) and my Scandisk MicroSD, but didn't notice a difference. I only played for 2-3 hours, a bit past the third boss, and ultimately couldn't deal with the game anymore. Luckily Nintendo allowed me to return the game as a one time exception. The core gameplay was great. I'll most likely pick this up on PC down the road.
Here's what the publisher posted on Steam forum in response to some users complaining about the performance. So hopefully they can fix the load times (which was my biggest issue because it kept me from actually wanting to explore the game):
Heya let me explain what happened on Switch.
Long story short we made a dumb mistake and it's caused problems that we are rushing to fix, we didn't know the mistake had happened until it was too late. This isn't a justification, it's an explanation and I TOTALLY understand if anyone wants a refund from Nintendo, unfortunately, that's out of my hands as Nintendo handles refunds on their ends.
We submitted the base game to Nintendo a long time ago for approval, but during the intervening time we added new features, weapons, fixed a few bugs and generally kept updating. On Steam we tested these incrementally but on Switch, due to the process, we gathered these into one big patch and submitted a few weeks before release.
During this time we consistently tested the game on Switch and the performance was fine, great even. Running at minimum of 30FPS and smooth, the only long load time was the first load time and we had next to 0 unexpected crashes. We were very proud of the Switch build.
Shortly before launch we received keys from Nintendo we tested the retail version of Vigil and were surprised to see that the game was not performing as well as it had been!
We looked into what happened and discovered that we had been doing something really dumb. When we tested the game internally we were generating an entirely new build to test. So the 1.1 build was an fresh build straight from the oven. This is not the game that was released.
The game that was released was the 1.0 version with patches. The patching process adds significant complexity that we simply... missed in our testing.
We had hoped that we would be able to get the build fixed by the games release but unfortunately, that hasn't transpired, however we are working on it right now and my QA team is sitting behind me testing the new build right now. We haven't fixed everything in this patch but it's more stable and the saves more regularly to prevent lost progress. We are working on the loading issues and the weapon switching issues as well!
Again, I can only apologize for this. Both the publisher (me) and the developer missed this issue and we are all kicking ourselves for it and are working diligently to fix it. We appreciate your patience and we totally understand anyone who requests a refund.
@MisterMan yup I find it hard to believe that the reviewer have not experienced any of the issues you, me and many many others did (frequent crashes, disappearing saves, game freezing in inventory etc.). It's like - he had a completely different game than you and me! BTW I play it on Switch Lite, stored on internal memory - not the SD card which is btw actually the one recommended by Nintendo, so not some cheap crap.
I have tried again today, but oh man the flooded section when you go in-and-out of derelict houses and ships, that itself is just a game-killer for me. You walk 5 seconds from door to another door and than wait 30-40s to load another room, where you do 2-3s of walking to another... and repeat. I think I know what causes the game to crash though - it always happens after I put the console to sleep and then resume play. 10m after that, crash. Also, if you want to play something else, you can't even close the game from the Switch menu as the switch hangs on "closing the application"... after which it crashes.
@Damo Based on the statement by the publisher on Steam forum, is it possible you got a different build than the current eShop version with the game-breaking crashes, etc? That could explain why you didn't experience some of the more horrific issues others have had to deal with.
@MisterMan hello sir, I register for this. how did you refund your game on nintendo? I really want to play the game on switch because it's accessible to everywhere. But with the given issue, Im planning to buy it on steam and refund it on Nintendo. Would you mind telling the steps on how to refund? thank you very much in advance
@potpot16 I contacted customer support on the Nintendo website and they were able to do it over the chat system on the site. Just explain the situation and they should let you if you’ve never refunded a game before.
@MisterMan I just bought the game a few days ago and am not having any problems at all. In handheld or docked, load times aren’t that annoying to me , but I’m a patient person. Haven’t had any crashes yet either. Just wanted a new metroidvania and am enjoying it thus far
@Thaswizz cool. maybe I'll give it a second chance now that there's been some patches.
