Re: Nintendo Outlines Pricing Range for Switch Online Service

Toms_Den

"Doesn't change the fact that we shouldn't have to pay at all"

Talk about entitlement. I have to pay for someone to provide a service that costs them money? Mindblowing, isn't it?

Especially considering the fact that EVERY SINGLE OTHER CONSOLE GAMER currently has to pay in order to play online games, this is by no means a ridiculous thing.

Re: Feature: Hopes and Dreams for Nintendo's 2017

@Mega_Yarn_Poochy I think what @LeRaposa is getting at is that 3D games are more marketable to a serious gaming audience than 2D games, which can only really sell to casual players, retro gamers, or kids (those three also being Nintendo's current audience, so you and me).

But I think there's another point there, a point about the sheer number of 2D platformers we've received this past generation, and how its limiting the variety of games we're seeing on Nintendo's platforms.

Personally, this past gen, when I heard that the next Pikmin game was going to be a 2D platformer on 3DS; when I heard that instead of producing a new Metroid game that Retro was making another 2D DKC game; heck, at Wii U launch when I heard we were getting ANOTHER NSMB game...I wasn't excited at all, it felt like more of the same, and it didn't feel like we were moving into a new generation of gaming.

So, not saying 2D platformers aren't fun and don't have a place in the industry anymore (if that's what you're saying, @LeRaposa, then you're dead wrong), just saying that Nintendo has been pumping out a TON of them and that personally, I would like to see them try some different stuff. And YOU BET my late-90s-born self would totally support Nintendo experimenting with and continuing to evolve the 3D platformer (outside of Super Mario, of course, which they already do a great job with), but in whatever Nintendo does, it should be unique and fun (Splatoon, anyone?). That's what they should be going for! And on a side note, was that not Iwata's whole vision for Nintendo in the first place? I remember presentations where he said stuff like that about how Nintendo ought to be.

I like Mitch's comment at the beginning. It'll be hard to truly erase a player as big as Nintendo from the industry, especially considering their historic popularity and popularity in Japan especially, but you can't help but think back to SEGA's history, where the problem was less so about the failure of the Saturn, and more about the PlayStation's IMMENSE success in the meantime. This definitely played a big part in the N64's lower-than-expected sales, and the truth is SEGA's past failures isn't what killed the Dreamcast, it was the PS2. Nintendo might have a great product, but how will consumers view the product in light of the competition? That will determine Switch's fate. Also what defined the failures and successes of every other Nintendo system when you think about it.

@UK-Nintendo Haha, that's a really cool chart!

Re: Feature: Breaking Down the My Nintendo Loyalty Economy

Rewards system isn't much different from what they've been doing already with Club Nintendo and all.

All they did was remodel Club Nintendo to work as a mediator between Nintendo platforms and smart devices. A couple of new features here and there, but it's still basically a rewards program.

Albeit a better one! Hopefully we see some awesome physical rewards in the future as well?

Re: NIS America Confirms Rodea the Sky Soldier Delay

I would not recommend the 3DS version, tbh. I've played it and...well, it's visually very disappointing. You might think, "Well, obviously, cuz it's 3DS", but seriously, it looks like they shoved the Wii version onto the 3DS without optimizing it much for the handheld and then just released it. Low framerate, trashy graphics, and overall just a disappointing port. The game still plays decently well, but I would definitely stick with the home console version if you can.

Re: Nintendo TVii Service Ends In North America On 11th August

Toms_Den

TVii was trash: the app only ever worked half the time. It was slow, laggy, and aesthetically unappealing. Appreciated the concept a lot (it was a brilliant idea) but the execution was a mess.

Why even allow it in Canada if you weren't going to include the NHL in the sports section?? Overall I felt TVii was underfunded and underdeveloped; not meant to be anything more than a tech demo, and even in future updates the app never got much better.

Re: Interview: Senran Kagura Producer Kenichirō Takaki Bares All

Toms_Den

@Ralizah Morally, I would never find myself playing a game like this (although I certainly see the appeal), but your first comment has a lot of great points to it. It helps put into perspective that there are many other great things about Senran Kagura that are hard to notice when such a big fuss is made only about the fan-service. Well said!

Re: Project H.A.M.M.E.R. Exposé Reveals Torrid State Of Affairs At Nintendo Software Technology

Same sort of stuff was happening over at SEGA of America, minus the racism. All industries have incidents like this, so it's unsurprising to hear about it, but I really wish that NST got back on track to making bigger games! I loved MP Hunters, and those sports games looked awesome!
Also, while I usually agree with Japanese development more than I do American development, I'm on the Americans' side of this argument Environments?? Are you kidding me??

Re: Poll: Is It Time For a Fresh Alternative to the Virtual Console?

Toms_Den

Personally, I say if you're going to release a game on a modern console, remaster it. If not, buy it on the original console. But then again, there has to be a cheaper way of being introduced to those older games. Amiibo tap and Smash Bros are cool ways of doing this, and I think Club Nintendo was interesting too, but I would much rather see an arcade service or something that allowed Nintendo players to play these old games as if they were in an arcade: just to try them out. Maybe there could be a cheap, 24-hour fee or something like that. I'm saying this mostly from the perspective of a guy who prefers to buy the original consoles and games, although I totally understand that it is super nice to be able to play these games on HD TVs on Wii U: for old consoles, you need an old CRT television (although old games look great on them )
