@RedderRugfish Used to be almost all pros used stick. But that was because the tournament scene for fighting games came directly from the arcades. The only advantage a stick offers is finger rolls, which are almost unused in fighting games in current tournaments.
These days its a pretty mixed feild, and arcade sticks don't seem to be offering any real advantage as people with regular controllers are winning tournaments all the time.
Probably the controllers with the most edge, are hitboxes, but a lot of people don't want to use them as they are awkward to learn at first.
Should have mentioned the Dragon Quest inspiration in the article, it's blatant. The logo, the music, the sound effects, and characters are all on the border of inspiration and theft.
@Gerald Probably near impossible to license X-Men at the time this was in development. The franchise was in the middle of being sold to Disney, but the deal wasn't finalized yet.
For some reason, I always end up disagreeing with Damien's articles, writing style, or sometimes he just gets the facts wrong. Which is weird, because he's at the top of this site, and I like every other writer here.
I didn't grow up with this game, so nostalgia is not a factor for me. I see the same is true for some commentors above too. But I had a blast playing this game on the Genesis collection. 7 or 8/10 for sure. The game is just fun, and the thinking and planning is what keeps you addicted for more.
I feel like this a poor review. It is written with personal displeasures, rather than a general review with a general audience in mind. It's not a good review to go by if you are looking for something to make a purchase decision. It's more of a fun personal opinion, that doesn't really fit with the general audience style of the rest of the site.
@Tirza What does millennial have to do with it? Millennials are the people least likely to use an internet guide. We were the ones who grew up with StarTropics and had no internet to help us. 34 year old millennial here, and StarTropics was right center in my gaming years... NES was the system of my generation.
@NintendoFan4Lyf Not really. The game is filled with puzzles. If this is your first time playing, you might not realize that the letter you need was supposed to be located physically outside of the game. So many people could be wasting a lot of time back tracking through the game looking for a letter, not realizing they will never find one.
I actually love retro JRPGs like Dragon Warrior 1. I also like some well done RPG Maker games. I like Homebrew JRPGs like Pier Solar. I like modern takes on retro JRPGs like Octopath. I like indie JRPGs like Cosmic Star Heroine.
But something about Kemco JRPGs always feel off. I can't really put my finger on it, but they feel cheap, and they aren't fun at all.
This game looks beautiful, like something I would jump on, if it was from another publisher. But with the Kemco name on it, Im really afraid to get burned again.
@Wavey84 They couldn't have replaced the analogue stick with a dpad. The dpad uses digital input. The analogue uses... analogue. If they would have removed the stick and put both the buttons and the dpad, switches OS would read both the face buttons and the dpad as the same thing. So in handheld you would have 2 dpads, which is fine, but doesn't help anymore than what they already have implemented. But in docked mode the dpad would either have to be dead, or act as ABXY. It a 0/1 on off input. A game that is programmed to read degrees of motion wouldn't recognize that on off input as direction pushes, unless they reprogrammed the game to accept it. That would have to be done on each game individually across all publishers.
In other words, what you are asking for is out of Horis hands.
I would have liked it if they swapped the placement of the dpad and stick though.
@Heavyarms55 That would be incorrect. Trademarking "Collection of Mana" doesn't protect any trademarks except for a game named "Collection of Mana". That game doesn't exist yet, so the only reason to trademark it would be to protect a game they may or may not release in the future. It won't protect any of the titles actually in the collection. That is why they were trademarking individual titles earlier. No grain of salt needed. They are planning on a new collection. It may never come out.. though most likely it will. But it is a fact they are working on a new collection, otherwise they wouldn't pay for a trademark to protect a non existent game.
@Reverandjames despite this article being on NintendoLife, these controllers don't work with Nintendo products. Unless you were talking about the Steam version of the collection.
The article should really state these aren't Nintendo compatible products. Maybe they would rather cash in on referral links from misinformed buyers?
@dew12333 Hori makes top quality stuff. Basically as good as first party. They have been known for decades as being the best third party accessory Maker.
These clothes on the other hand... Definitely not worth the price.
Ok, I guess I was right not to have faith in this review. Seems to be getting 7/10 other places.
Weird. NL gives everything 7/10 or higher. Now all of the sudden this gets a 5. I always see people in the comments saying NL scores games too high. Maybe they are trying to shake things up.
Hmm. I'm still going to buy this and see for myself. One thing mentioned as a negative here, I would call a positive. No combo chains. I hate games where you mash out chain combos. It is so boring and repetitive. I prefer older action RPGs like Cadash, Wonder Boy, and SOTN, where you hit and move.
I would probably pass if the game had those mash combos. Lord's of Shadow Mirror of Fate is the worst 2d Castlevania I've ever played, all because the chain combos slow down the game and make it boring.
How super popular and hugely successful is this? I'm familiar with other Warhammer games, but not this card game. I play a lot of TCGs and I don't know anyone that plays this digital one.
The article makes it sound like it's as successful as Hearthstone or MTG Arena or Online
This isn't retro. It's just Pixel art indie. This game had an SNES color pallette and Atari 2600 graphics. I love retro indie games. Look at Joy Masher. That is what retro games look like. This is just lazy. Put the work in to get a retro feel.
@Bunkerneath Give it a try. Odallus is the best game I've played since it's launch. The look and feel of these games are true to 8bit retro games as well. I'm tired of all the pixel drawn semi retro games too, but Odallus is legit. Oniken is good too, but only if you enjoy truely brutal retro games like Batman and Ninja Gaiden.
@Ralizah I got defective hardware on the SN30 and the FC30? And all the videos, forums, and tutorials on how to mod the poorly designed PCB solder points, are all just people with defective units? If defective units are that wide spread, that makes 8bitdo look even worse.
Its not a defective unit issue though. It's just the solder points are designed poorly and they don't cover the right area. There are many sources with teardowns that show and explain this. It's just some people don't notice it, because they don't play a lot of retro games, or they buy them as shelf pieces, or they just put up with it.
That and widely misrepresented reviews from blogs and YouTubers who are getting paid or getting free hardware from 8bitdo and have tainted reviews. Most people buying, don't know any better.
@HollowGrapeJ 8bitdo are rubbish unless you are shelling out for the SN30 Pro or N30 Pro 2. In that case you are going to be spending more than $60 for 2 controllers. All the older model 8bitdo stuff like the ones that come in NES and SNES style shells, have poor PCB designs, and require you to take them apart and mod them to get a good working controller. That and they use micro USB, which is a bummer in 2018 when laptops, phones, and game consoles use USB C. You have to have to plug in an extra charger for one device, instead of using the one that everything else uses.
@Ralizah They are the same price... 2 controllers cost you $60. And the Nintendo ones actually have good Dpads. 8bitdo only has decent dpads on the SN30 Pro and the N30 Pro 2. All their other models are trash for retro games. The dpad constantly gives you wrong inputs. It's infuriating to play platformers with them. I sold off mine and got the SN30 Pro. It's not perfect, but it's at least useable.
It's like bizarro world, where some people or reviewers think they are good. But then you try them for yourself, or do a web search about their dpads, or look at honest reviewers like Lon.tv and find out that most of their controllers are garbage. You need to take them apart and mod them to get it to register dpad inputs properly.
Meh most people just don't notice I guess. I'm guessing they are shelf piece for most consumers.
Not interested in crappy hardware NOAC emulators. Someone needs to make a real deal follow up to the Super Gameboy, that actually uses real hardware, or an FPGA. This thing with its own video output is worthless. Might as well just buy a fake GBC handheld that has video out for your TV.
So much edge in the comments. Too cool for these tracks. Reminds me of the 13 year olds that think they are too old and mature for Mario and Pokemon, meanwhile all us older mature people in our 30s are playing Mario and Pokemon.
@TreonsRealm You're contradicting yourself. You are saying you are not mad that Limited Run is now letting other people buy the games so they can be happy and enjoy them too. Then you go and say you are upset Limited Run changed their mind and they are letting other people buy stuff, you thought other people wouldnt be allowed to buy.
Who cares. Stop treating gaming like it's some kind of investment, or you don't want to share your toys or something.
You bought the game for yourself. Other people will buy it for themselves. No big deal.
Good grief, that kind and of mentality ruins collecting. The point of collecting is to collect. Nothing stops you from collecting when other people are able to collect the same item. It makes the community larger and stronger when we can all share in the same things.
So LRG may have gone back on their word... But was it for a negative outcome, or positive? It was definitely positive, but you act like it's negative.
@ShadJV They can keep releasing every year without the issues you point out. Don't forget Gameboy, Super Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance. DS. NES Model 2. SNES Model 2. Playchoice 10. VS System ETC.
They have a lot of options to go on for years before they have to figure out GameCube.
It's too bad these companies have to wait until they hear the cries of the fans before even starting development.
Retro style games have been selling multiple times as many games on Switch as they do on competing consoles, even though those consoles have larger install bases.
You release on Switch a year after you do on other platforms, and Switch owners get tired of waiting and move on. Hopefully all the publishers have caught on now.
I bet they will lose thousands of sales on the Genesis collection, for not doing a simultaneous release.
@DarthFoxMcCloud Did Nintendo say somewhere that they won't work with other devices, I didn't see that? I was assuming they would work with PC, like every other wireless controller Nintendo has put out with a Bluetooth sync button.
@RupeeClock The nes style 8bitdo controllers have notoriously horrible dpads. Playing Contra was a nightmare with them. Plus the A and B buttons are off axis, not really getting a replica of an NES.
That being said I ordered the NES DIY kit. Hopefully the dpad issues are fixed there. They fixed them in the sn30 pro.
The cost is fair, two first party controllers for $30 each. That's about the same price as knock off third party retro controllers. These have a sync button on top. I'm wondering if they will work with PC like all the other Switch controllers.
Maybe I'm pety, but this art style is such a turn off, I won't play the game. I'd be fine with 24fps 480p if they had to go that low, but at least keep the original style.
The game is very dramatic, but with this art, the drama falls flat, and nothing can be taken seriously.
@Cobalt I didn't say you were a liar. I said you were making an illogical argument. You are taking lowered prices from various retailers who want to get rid of stock, and trying to make an argument that that's the real price. The real price is $60 as seen on PlayStation and Microsoft stores.
Heck I can preorder the Switch version on Amazon for $48. That doesn't make the real price of the Switch version $48... The real retail price is $60, just the same as it is on PS4 and Xbox1.
You are making far-fetched arguements. Just stop.
Rise of the Tomb Raider is $15 on Steam right now and $60 on PlayStation Store. PlayStation tax!
That is the retail price Blizzard and Sony have agreed on, that is the factual price.
Of course physical games will be discounted over time. The Switch copy will eventually get discounted too. But why in the world would they launch the game for $40 on Switch as the base price, when the base price on Xbox and PlayStation is still $60 to this day.
Your Switch tax argument is lame. Do you cry about a PlayStation tax every time a Steam game gets ported to PS4 for full price, meanwhile it's constantly on sale on Steam for $4.99 or available in a humble bundle for 99 cents? Don't be a hypocrite.
@Cobalt The game is $60 on the PlayStation Store and on Xbox One, and those versions have less features. Why would the Switch version be cheaper? That would be weird.
@TheFanatic to be fair though, casual players probably aren't going to preorder. They will buy on impulse when they see it on shelves, or see someone playing it.

@Cobalt Oh yeah that's logical. Post Amazon sale prices to make a fake argument. The fact is the real retail price is $60 https://store.playstation.com/en-us/product/UP0002-CUSA00242_00-D3ETERNALCOLL000
Re: Rumour: Leak Signals Blizzard's Diablo 3 Will Unleash Hell On Switch This Year
@Cobalt The game is $60 on the PlayStation Store and on Xbox One, and those versions have less features. Why would the Switch version be cheaper? That would be weird.
Re: Japanese Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu And Eevee Pre-Orders Include Figures And Exclusive Art Book
@TheFanatic to be fair though, casual players probably aren't going to preorder. They will buy on impulse when they see it on shelves, or see someone playing it.
