Re: Nintendo Confirms That Around 160,000 Accounts May Have Been Hacked, Personal Info Possibly At Risk

Tim_Vreeland

@Bobobiwan You should be using 2factor authentication for everything from your Nintendo account to your utilities bills. This isnt some special Nintendo thing. Just about every responsible digital payment platform has 2factor options. You can use Microsoft or Authy Authenticators if you dont like Google. Its a fact of the modern age, 2 factor is needed everywhere. If you dont want to use it, thats up to you, but don’t complain if your accounts get taken over. You were given the tools.

Re: Random: Nintendo Says Streets Of Rage 4 Is Out On Switch, But It Definitely Isn't

Tim_Vreeland

@mesome713 Game was never delayed, but anyway, Dotemu is a really well known and trusted game company. A lot of triple AAA studios have used them on projects too. They are mostly known for bringing classic games to modern consoles.

Heres some if their work you may have played or heard of:

Double Dragon Trilogy
A Bunch of Final Fantasy ports
Bunch of SNK ports such as Metal Slug and KOF
RType ports
Ys ports
Windjammers 2
X-Men arcade game on Xbox live and psn

Re: Nintendo Switch Players Advised To Secure Accounts After Numerous Unauthorised Login Reports

Tim_Vreeland

@Desrever @Rayquaza2510 Just a heads up. Many companies have stopped doing sms 2 step, because it is not secure. Some phone companies have even blocked automated 2 step texts from being sent on their systems. It is super easy for hackers to intercept text messages coming to.your line. (Also think about this outside of 2 step... They can intercept messages to your loved ones very easily)

Re: Dragon Marked For Death Is No Longer Exclusive To The Nintendo Switch

Tim_Vreeland

@SwitchForce Well first if all, this game was made to be played online. The single player mode is hardly even a thing.

Second, you can play Steam games offline.

Third, if you want to save money, I would recommend selling your Switch and getting Steam. You can get a laptop that plays Switch power equal games for the same price as a Switch. But when it comes to buying games you will save a ton of money. I have like 50 games that are both on my Switch and on Steam. I bought the duplicates on Steam, simply because they were so cheap. I spend between $1 and $5 for sale games on Steam that have only ever been on sale on Switch for $15-$45.

Ive been to many parts of the world, and im pretty sure no matter where you are living, if internet is expensive or you dont want the monthly fee, its still cheaper to just get a few gigs of hotspot data on your phone and download a steam game. The total price of the data combined with the price of the steam game is going to be cheaper in the end, than the total price of a Switch sale game.

And lets be honest. You are here on NL. You have access to data.

Also if you want to save even more money, go to a coffee with free wifi. You can play online for free on Steam. Nintendo charges to play most online games

Re: Nintendo Warns Of An Increasing Number Of Credit Card Fraud Reports, Offers Advice

Tim_Vreeland

@Dirty0814 You must not have read all of what I said. 2fa doesn't protect you from a server breach where records are stolen. That part was included for people who said they removed their payment details, so their card number can't be stolen like it was on PlayStation.

Anyway I explained why 2fa can help you. Man in the middle attacks and live attacks. With a man in the middle attack, a hacker is located virtually between you and Nintendo. They may have hacked your isp or other path on the way to Nintendo. They are not hacking Nintendo's server, they are watching live as you send data. Now you log in to Nintendo's server with your account details. They now see your login information and credit card info at the same time. They go on their personal Switch and use that card info and login info, and buy $100 worth of Vbucks.

With 2fa, you no longer have a direct line to Nintendo which the hacker can exploit. You need a line to Nintendo with your Nintendo password, and you need a line to Google to verify your Google authentication.

So in other words the hacker is using a man in the middle attack to listen in on you. He grabs your Nintendo password and credit card, but then finds out he can't make a purchase because he can't authenticate with Google.

Re: Nintendo Warns Of An Increasing Number Of Credit Card Fraud Reports, Offers Advice

Tim_Vreeland

@Stocksy I think you are confusing privacy concerns with security concerns.

Facebook has a terrible record when it comes to privacy and security.

Google has a terrible record when it comes to privacy. When it comes to security, they have one of the best records out there. They are leading the industry in security technology. When it comes to security breaches against Google, they have the most spotless record you will find .

Re: Nintendo Warns Of An Increasing Number Of Credit Card Fraud Reports, Offers Advice

Tim_Vreeland

@Spoony_Tech @Bearzilla823 @edhe @progx @aznable @thelightspirit @Dirty0814 @jamesthemagi

Just in the interest of helping everyone out, and hopefully this gets shared rather than sharing misinformation....

Reducing all possible attack vectors is the best solution. There will never be anything perfectly secure.

Two factor authentication should be implemented by everyone.

Chosing the option to not store your payment info on your Switch, does not save you if Nintendo's server is hacked. You could have bought something on the eShop 30 days ago, and you payment info is still sitting on Nintendo's server waiting for a hacker to scoop up. Chosing not to save the info only makes it so someone who has your Nintendo account log in, can't reuse that info of they log into your account. Merchants are required to keep a record of your payment details. That is why we have incidents like the Target retail store hack, where people who have never used their credit card online, and only made in store purchases, had their card numbers stolen from Targets servers.

If you have 2fa enabled you can at least help prevent man in the middle attacks. This will help prevent someone stealing your card number while you are making a purchase live.

PayPal will not help keep you secure either. If the hacker has your Ninteno login, they can use your account to purchase things through PayPal. This has been happening a lot lately, where people are buying Fortnite Vbucks with hacked accounts.

Re: Sega Celebrates 60th Anniversary With New Website, New Character And "Special Content" Tease

Tim_Vreeland

@Anti-Matter Sega is actually much older than 60, Im surprised the writer missed it in the article. It was originally founded in 1940 (making them 80) in America as Standard games. It changed its name to Service Games (Se Ga... Sega) in 1951. The business expanded to Japan to provide US military bases with coin op machines. in 1960 they shed the full name of Service Games and just kept the shorter Sega. Sega was actually an American company until 1984, when it was fully absorbed by Japanese leadership. It had actually put out its first console as an American company, the SG-1000

Re: This Switch Arcade Controller Doubles Up As A Charging Dock

Tim_Vreeland

@GauBan There has been something similar on the market for a long time. The old model didn't charge the Switch though.

This will probably be all over Amazon in a couple months being sold by 100 different Chinese brands, just like the last one. Don't know why Nintendo Life is covering this junk though. It's like they want us to brick our Switches. I wish they would stick to covering quality items.

The old model also saw the NL spotlight: https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2019/12/convert_your_switch_into_a_portable_arcade_unit_with_gametechs_mini_arcade_stick

Re: Limited Run Reveals Streets Of Rage 4 Classic Edition, Pre-Orders Open On 20th March

Tim_Vreeland

@Gs69 You don't have to be there there minute it opens. LRG needs to do a better job at communicating this, but they changed the way they operate a long time ago.

The game will be sold as a preorder. Meaning it can't sell out during the preorder window. They take however many preorders they get, and then have that many produced.

They also order an extra production for Best Buy to sell in their stores.

So yeah if you decide not to preorder a copy, and Best Buy sells out, then you may have to turn to eBay resellers. But if you want one, there is no problem getting one during pre-order week.

Re: Random: Smash Ultimate Evo Japan Champion Drops Golden Prize Controller On Stage

Tim_Vreeland

@Damo Why did you only reply to that part? How about addressing the other part... The part about the very article we are commenting in. You are a head honcho here right? Can you fix the title of the article instead of skirting the issue?

Every one is noticing the trend of this site getting worse, and it keeps getting brought up more and more in the comments, but employees either divert or ignore. The next step will probably be censoring or banning NL fans that are worried about how this site is becoming trashy, and just want to help.

Journalistic integrity needs to be brought back.

I also remember not too long ago, a product review was not properly disclosed as a sponsored review... Even though the product was given to NL for free to keep forever... Which clearly in every major Western country, counts as a sponsorship. But I was told by NL staff that it doesn't count because they didn't pay NL money.. I often wonder when the last time some of the staff here updated their credentials as professional writers, because they have no idea about their own countries regulations, let alone what is considered acceptable and decent in journalism.

Re: Sinless, A Snatcher-Inspired Point-And-Click Visual Novel, Lands On Switch This Week

Tim_Vreeland

@imgrowinglegs Well, depends on how you look at it. It came out in 1988 in Japan on the PC 8801 and the MSX 2. But this version was much different then the Snatcher you are probably fond of. Those are 8bit systems, and the game didn't have its cinematic feel, it was basically just a traditional point and click text adventure like you'd find on many DOS systems in the west at the time.

The PC Engine (known as Turbo Grafx 16 in the west, though the game wasn't released in the west) version was released in late 1992, and is very close to what we played in the west on the Sega/Mega CD.

The Sega/Mega CD version was actually released in the west first (1994 UK, 1995 US), and then the Japanese got it in 1996 on the Mega CD.

So in a way, we got the Sega version first

Re: Convert Your Switch Into A Portable Arcade Unit With Gametech's Mini Arcade Stick

Tim_Vreeland

This POS has been on the market for a long time. They just added a picture of the switch lite on the box. It's cheap Chinese generic garbage that is sold by a hundred different companies no one has ever heard of. I suppose that information would have been in the article, but then no one would click the affiliate link right?

Re: Review: Star Ocean: First Departure R - An RPG Nostalgia Trip That's Showing Its Age

Tim_Vreeland

@BulbasaurusRex You are definitely out of touch with the majority of retro gamers. The things you are talking about may be more in line with modern indie gaming, which may cross over from time to time with retro gamers. Have been a member of several retro gaming communities for years. "Should have at least close to 16bit"... No, no way. 16 bit style is great. But 8bit is too. The retro community loves 8bit style games, and new games are still being programmed for 8 bit consoles.

Also the point of Souls style games is to be hard. From Software have made several statements in the past, saying they won't put an easy mode in their games. Their games were designed to be hard, so you have to think to overcome. This isn't a design flaw that should be docked points. This is a great feature. And it's proven by how well the games sell and are beloved.

And you would be sadly mistaken to think retro jrpg fans don't like grinding. It's a way of relaxing for many. That's why so many of us go back and play retro rpgs that we missed when we were kids. It's something familiar but something new as well. There are plenty of modern rpgs, or indie rpgs, but many of us go back and play something like Destiny of an Emperor, just because we like those old grindy gems.

Look at the rerelease of Dragon Quest 1-3 on Switch. The majority of people complained because the rerelease used the updated versions with less grinding and 16 bit style graphics, rather than the 8bit grindy NES Dragon Warrior games. Go look at the comment sections of articles announcing the release. Nobody wanted the modern ports.

Re: Review: Star Ocean: First Departure R - An RPG Nostalgia Trip That's Showing Its Age

Tim_Vreeland

So basically it got docked points for being a.classic jrpg? That's crap. Would you rate Super Mario Bros. 4 stars because it's absurdly short? No, it's an excellent game for what it is meant to be.

Putting "repetitive combat" on the negatives list is like putting "game was too hard" on a Cuphead or Dark Souls review. It's the whole point of the game. If the game genre is not for you and you don't like the game because it fits in the bounds of it's genre (classic jrpg), then pass the review to someone who knows how to judge an old rpg. Don't dock it points for being what the players want it to be. I would never review a Madden game and say "this game is football simulator, and I find football boring, so it's a crap game". This game is meant to be a grind fest for fans of grind fests. It is a positive.

This game deserves at least an 8, and rating below a 7 is just wrong. A lot of opinion does go into reviews, but there is a point where you are objectively wrong, and going by the comments, this review hit that point.

Re: A Single Pokémon Card Just Became The Most Expensive Ever, Selling For $195,000

Tim_Vreeland

@FantasiaWHT @bluemujika MTG is 26 years old. Pokemon TCG is 23 years old. Not a big difference there.

Illustrator sold for $195,000 this year and only has 39 copies in the whole world.

Alpha Black Lotus sold for $166,000 this year, and has over 1,000 copies running around.

I'm pretty sure mtg cards are doing a lot better, value wise.

Alpha Starter decks sell for $70,000. Base Set Pokemon theme decks sell for $80.

Re: Feature: Just Who The Heck Is Terry Bogard, Smash Bros. Ultimate's Latest DLC Fighter?

Tim_Vreeland

@Kalmaro It is kinda weird, that he's literally in about 50 (that's not an exagerated number) more games, than there are Smash games. He's in a bunch of movies and anime series as well. He has merch up the wazoo. This is like his 5th cross over in a fighting game....

And Smash players, that claim Smash is a fighting game, and that Smash is part of the FGC, are like "Who's this guy".

It's very funny actually. It's like a Twilight Zone episode.
