Re: Video: Modding Old Retro Controllers to Work on Switch with 8Bitdo DIY

Tim_Vreeland

@Agramonte I can't think of a modern controller that is better for 2d games than the SNES and NES controllers.

Xbox One the dpad isn't lined up with the face buttons, and the face buttons are convex and beady, making them uncomfortable for extended platformer play where you hold one button down to run.

PS4 is probably the best bet, but it's face buttons aren't as responsive as older controllers for rapid presses in shmups and run n guns. It feels awkward holding those big grips when you aren't using the triggers at all.

Switch pro controller has a poor dpad for 2d games, and has the same non symmetrical problem as Xbox.

NES controller is so lite and convenient. The precision of its dpad is perfect for Pixel perfect jumps. The face buttons are really some of the best ever made for rapid presses. I have modern controllers for Sony and Microsoft systems that have already had their face buttons wear out, but my NES ones I got in 87 still work perfectly.

SNES is like the NES but with more options and now a rounded design since having shoulder buttons requires you grip the controller differently. (That's the main reason the brick shape wanst really a problem on NES). The face buttons aren't as responsive as the NES, but they are still miles ahead of modern controllers.

I've tried using modern controllers for retro games many times, and it always feels awkward. They are just too big and clunky for 2d precision. Playing Punch Out, Ninja Gaiden, Adventure Island, Galaga, Commando, etc on a modern dual stick controller, makes the games feel impossible to play well.

Don't get me wrong, I own a Dualshock 4, Xbox One, and a Switch controller. I love them all for modern games. I wouldn't use an snes30 pro when I play Battlefield, because it's just not a good option when I have a DS4 that performs better at the game. I wouldn't use a DS4 to play Mario 3 because it's just a worse option than my NES controller.

Re: Wall Street Analyst Warns Of Slowing Nintendo Switch Sales

Tim_Vreeland

@Mogster 2 major things that make your point completely irrelevant.

1. Smash was also available on 3ds as a dual release, so no one had to buy a Wii U to play a new Smash game. So whatever those people were thinking, and how you think you have a counter point there, is meaningless.

2. The Switch doesn't need saving. It's outsold Wii U's lifetime sales. Smash will help it sell more units, that's an undeniable truth. But it will keep selling units regardless.

Re: Guide: New Nintendo Switch Games Releasing In 2018

Tim_Vreeland

One of my most anticipated games "Dragon Marked for Death" by IntiCreates got skipped over on this list for some reason, even though it's featured prominently on Nintendo's website.

And Dragon Quest XI in 2018... C'mon guys. Other people noticed a lot of errors in this list too... But this is NintendoLife. You guys are known for not correcting errors or making updates. I'm still having flashbacks from your holiday shopping guide last year.

Re: The First Two Sega AGES Titles Are Launching On Switch Next Month

Tim_Vreeland

@Stocksy @garydbz25 I see what you're saying guys, but there are some advantages to this method.

For one, the PS4/XB1 compilation is just a big rom dump. The emulation is poor, and all you get is the base ROMs. The Sega Ages games will have additional features, and because they aren't running in a one size fits all emulator, we should probably expect a better experience. If past Sega Ages are any indication, we could also expect complete remakes of games, and 2d games turned into more modern polygonal games.

And secondly, you have the advantage of just buying a couple games you want. A lot of people will only play 1 or 2, maybe 3 games in the whole PS4/XB1 collection. So it's more expensive to buy the compilation.

If you are really into Sega games (I know I am), it does suck a little bit that the other consoles get a bunch of games on the cheap, right away. But to be honest I have a PS4 and bought the collection and wasn't impressed. I ended up selling it, because none of my friends have it, and the online population is pretty scarce. So having all these games single player with bad emulation was a let down. I decided I'd just get the games I want on Switch, and PC/phone.

Re: Make Your Official NES, SNES And Mega Drive Controllers Wireless With 8BitDo DIY

Tim_Vreeland

@Tsusasi Those controllers you get with the Analogue systems are newer, so it's possible they got updated. I haven't tried them myself though. The SN30 pro is definitely good enough as far as the dpad goes. That was the first controller I noticed an improvement on the dpad. I had a lot of their stuff from before the SN30 Pro, and they all had the dpad issue. Other than that the controllers are good and feel like the real real.

The NES adapter they broke on My Life in Gaming is made out of a cheaper plastic. I own one myself. It doesn't feel up to the build quality of the controllers. They broke it by accidentally pushing the USB cord into it too far, and the USB socket broke off of the plastic.

Good news is, someone in the YouTube comments for these new 8bitdo boards said it looks like they updated the copper inputs for the dpad. I hope that's true.

Re: Make Your Official NES, SNES And Mega Drive Controllers Wireless With 8BitDo DIY

Tim_Vreeland

@Tsusasi They have been getting feedback for years about their awful PCB design that lead to the dpad not functioning properly, but they only fixed the issue when they made a new PCB for the SNES30 pro. But they are still using older PCBs for some new controllers they put out. Just Google "8bitdo dpad".

I've owned the FC 30, nes30, and SN30, and they all had the issue. I own the SNES30 pro and it is greatly improved, but still not as reliable and accurate as far as the dpad goes, as original controllers.

I have the NES adapter and it's made of really junk plastic. My Life in Gaming the YouTube channels had their USB port snap.

Re: Make Your Official NES, SNES And Mega Drive Controllers Wireless With 8BitDo DIY

Tim_Vreeland

I was hoping they would do something like this for years.... However not like this. 8bitdo is notorious for having bad PCB design, that gives you issues with dpad inputs. Unfortunately this mod makes you use 8bitdos PCBs still. The idea I wanted to see, was using the original controller completely, but removing the cord. On the SNES this would be really easy, since the cord detaches (it's not soldered). Just make a Bluetooth chip and battery that connects to the built in port on the controller.

Re: Second Season Of The Castlevania Netflix Series Arrives “Later This Year”

Tim_Vreeland

@Gauchorino Yeah... Someone definitely peed in your breakfast cereal.

Nah mate, this isn't my favorite show. I watched it once when it originally aired.

It's just getting really old seeing people over react online because something from their past is brought back in a new way. It was a comical trend. Now it's just becoming sad seeing adults crying every 5 minutes someone took their toys.

Re: Guide: How To Play Fortnite On Switch If You've Played Before On PS4

Tim_Vreeland

@AirElephant Sony is either going to budge, or they are going to pay heavily in users and finances. This isn't some random game people are upset over. This is the biggest phenomenon in recent gaming history. Fortnite is huge. It's constantly in the news.... Not gaming news, but local broadcast stations, national news, news papers. I got kids running around my neighborhood with toy guns playing "Fortnite". Public schools are discussing Fortnite at their meetings, because students are clogging up the schools wifi playing Fortnite.

I don't really care about the game. I played it for the first time today and it wasn't my thing. You might not care enough to be upset... But straight up, there will be enough people who do care enough, and will take a stand. It will hurt Sony if they don't stomp this out fast and beg for forgiveness from fans.

Re: Hyper Light Drifter Will Feature Exclusive Content On Switch With 1080p Docked Resolution

Tim_Vreeland

@moroboshi It's really not difficult. As said before, it's probably just not your thing. I played this in a video game book club, and every member beat it before the review gathering, and we all had positive thoughts about it. Definitely not repetitive, the layouts in the dungeons and monster arrangements were one of the best parts of the game.

I can't wait to play this again on Switch. My only gripe was the final boss didn't have a second form, I was hoping for a more drawn out battle that was a bit more difficult.

Re: Nyko Is Being Taken To Court Over A Bricked Switch Console

Tim_Vreeland

@zip It's not Nintendo's fault because during the Switches development, USB C standards were not released. USB IF basically released the port to consumers with no standards, and it was the wild west for a long time. Heck, my HP laptop has software DRM that won't let you use any USB C charger or dock except HP ones... And even then only specific HP cables with the software lock check built in work.

Re: Sega Announces AGES For Nintendo Switch, Mega Drive Mini Console

Tim_Vreeland

@Mr_Pepperami It's actually pretty great that we get individual titles. PS4 and Xbox only get a limited set of Genesis games. Switch owners get Ages games, which if you look at past Ages games, a lot of them were remade polygon games or remastered 2d games with all new sprites and artwork. So Switch owners have potential to get a lot of cool stuff that was never released in the west or has never been rereleased. PS4 and Xbox get the same old Genesis ROMs that have been making the rounds of every console and PC collection.

Re: So The Live-Action Detective Pikachu Movie Looks... Interesting?

Tim_Vreeland

I see a lot of comments confused, and possibly the article author is confused as well? The people in suits, such as the Pikachu, are stand ins that will be replaced by computer generated Pokemon. This is done so the human actors have something physical to relate to. So for example they know what direction to look and to speak to.

Re: THQ Nordic Is Reviving Its Nickelodeon Back Catalogue For Modern Systems

Tim_Vreeland

@Dang69 My personal theory is that Sega 100% plans on releasing a Switch version, and they could have had that version ready to launch side by side with the others. But they know if they wait to announce the Switch version a few months after the other consoles gain some sales, they will get people double dipping for a Switch portable Switch version.

Re: Johnny Turbo's Arcade Arrives Next Week In Europe

Tim_Vreeland

@Pahvi Also "Gates" of Doom is wrong, in the main text of the article. It seems NL editors sometimes don't read the comments section. Many times I see errors in the articles, and half the comments section is talking about it, but no one updates the article.

The worst occurance of this wasn't even a typo. It was the entire US Switch Christmas buyers guide article. 90% of the comments were asking for the article to be removed, because it was basically useless at an impractical bare bones level.
