The Nintendo Switch Online service is now live, meaning the recently announced wireless NES controllers can now be purchased from the official website, at least in North America. You must have a subscription to the Switch online service and the deal is limited to one pack per Nintendo account.
The pack will set you back $59.99 and will be shipped later this year in December. As already highlighted, the controller can only been used with NES games on the online service and charges when attached to the Switch - just like the Joy-Cons. There are also special L and R buttons at the top of the controller, adding a modern touch to the classic design.
Will you be picking up the wireless NES controller pack? Tell us below.

For the Nintendo Switch Online high roller type
can't see these selling out at all out because of 3 reasons.
1. the price
2. only works for nes games
3. can't use them when attached to system
I wanted these, but they need to make them listed properly on Amazon and add a USB-C charging port.
Imagine having to buy specific controllers for specific games in the future. EA is probably already thinking about this.
Definitely passing on these.
I split the cost with a friend. We're heavy into everything from our childhoods, so we just had to have them. We'll put it through the paces, and likely use it on our PCs sometime in the near future whenever that becomes a thing too.
Honestly...I can't see devs not updating games to be compatible with this thing anyway.
@JamesJose7 It's not new. See games like Guitar Hero and Rockband...........
@sanderev I didn't mean it like that, obviously those games introduce a way more different experience than normal controlls, i love my rock band drums and would never prefer a controller over that. I meant it like these controllers right here, were they only work for nintendo online NES games. Let's say a FIFA controller with a couple new buttons or less and a different layout only to play FIFA games.
I'm good. I'll just get the 8bitdo one I've been eyeing. I love the classic controller, but I just dont need two, and I dont like the way they charge.
I can only hope there is a future update allowing them to work with any game that only needs 4 or less buttons. Then I’d consider buying them.
I was going to buy these, but Nintendo's site isn't recognizing my online subscription. Anyone have this issue?
@sanderev You can actually use those guitars and drums outside of those games.
@JamesJose7 EA is going to introduce a new ball and shoe control set for FIFA, you get the choice of the Adidas or Puma set.
Yay...a $60 controller that only works with 30+ year old games that only work with Switch online, has to be online once a week and will become useless once the Switch online service is killed off.
I just GOTS to get me a pair of those!!
Thank you, Nintendo Switch online service!
Oh, and I just love that the part of this "service" where they state (under special offers for members) that they are PLANNING to eventually actually offering something. Great.
@BrettAwesome This is listed as one of the special offers though, the privilege to buy these NES controllers along with a set of Splatoon gear (which would be pointless without the sub anyway).
"You will be charged upon pre-purchase. Product will ship in December. Subject to availability upon purchase."
translation: yeah we don't know if we can actually send you one, but we will take your money right away, thanks.
horrible...
Pass. It's a cool concept but has limited usefulness, and it costs the same as a full big release.
Preordered. Very excited for these for my kids and I. Maybe Nintendo will add more uses to them down the road in a future update? Who knows.
The cost is fair, two first party controllers for $30 each. That's about the same price as knock off third party retro controllers. These have a sync button on top. I'm wondering if they will work with PC like all the other Switch controllers.
They're not so overpriced, but that's assuming that eventually we can use them with OTHER GAMES, anything that only needs two buttons and a d-pad. Also would hope that one day we'll get more settings and options for the NES titles, such as turning off the borders so they're solid black or hopefully being able to REWIND with the L button
I pre-purchased these today. Should be fun to use when playing the NES titles, adding some nostalgia and accuracy for these specific games. Looking forward to them.
I realize they are not for everyone, but they look great, and are a cool collectible for me, since my original NES hardware is long gone.
I didn't purchase, and have no intention of getting a NES classic, so these scratched an itch for me. It would be cool if they are compatible with some of the arcade classics as well.
Do the NES Classic controllers work with these games? Because if they do then I'll definitely stick with them.
Of course, I might need to get an extension cable of some kind to go with them...
Special L and R buttons? For what, they're for controlling NES games! Are they like Home and Capture function L and R buttons, or will the NES games gain extra button functionality (or even button remapping)? NL, anyone... can you clarify? Anything would help justify the price and limited nature of these things to me...
I pre-ordered. I think this is a cool way to play the NES games.
I have a feeling when Nintendo Switch Online is no more Nintendo will make it so we can still play the games and use these controllers.
Worse case I will have a collectable item I won't use, like my sealed Amiibo.
@MeloMan You use the L and R buttons to go to the menu to create saves, load saves and change games.
@LinktotheFuture Thanks, I kinda figured since you'd have no other way to do those functions outside of grabbing your joycons/pro controller
I doubt it. I might, but I probably will not be getting these.
So I can’t use these offline for a NES game I purchased like Donkey Kong?
