If you keep up to date with the latest happenings in the world of Nintendo, you might have seen a few photos doing the rounds over the weekend of a supposed Nintendo 64 Classic Mini. It's the device that is expected to succeed the incredibly popular mini versions of the NES and Super Nintendo.
After a closer inspection at the N64 Classic Mini, our one and only Alex Olney has now released a lovely video confirming this "leak" is, in fact, a fake. At a glance, the photos of the system look convincing enough, but once you start inspecting and comparing the finer details of the original console to the one in the pictures, it becomes less believable by the second.
The typography is one of the major giveaways - with the font not even matching the original system and the gaps and placement of letters evidently done in computer software. The reset button is another dead giveaway. Suspiciously, the power switch also isn't on display. The final nail in the coffin is the N64 logo itself - with the fake making little effort to match the official one.
What do you think? Is this Nintendo 64 Classic Mini real or fake? Take a look at the video above and tell us in the comments.

Hopefully, those games will come to Virtual Console instead.
@Kalmaro Didn't they say they wouldn't be doing anything like the virtual console anymore? I thought they would just bring the games out as standalone packages and what not?
Never believe a leak, so that way you're not disappointed if it's fake or you're pleasantly surprised of it's real. I was burned out too many times back in the NX days.
@Shade_Koopa Did they? I know with the online subscription we are getting older games. I'm hoping they eventually extend that.
@Kalmaro @Shade_Koopa
I can second that Nintendo DEFINITELY said VC will not be coming to Switch. Yeah, the subscription does include NES games but they’ve yet to say anything indicating it’ll extend to other platforms. Granted, I’d love to (I don’t personally gain any value from NES games) but at this point I wouldn’t count on it...
Edit: found one of the instances of them outright saying it: https://www.google.com/amp/s/kotaku.com/virtual-console-is-not-coming-to-switch-nintendo-says-1825848253/amp
I'd buy it. Didn't buy the NES Classic but I'm considering getting the SNES Classic. I was born in the late 90's and have two older brothers that loved playing N64... so needless to say I'd be all over a Classic edition!
I still think N64 Mini this year is a stretch. They can’t keep releasing classic consoles every year - next year would be GameCube Mini, 2020 would be Wii Mini, 2021 would be Wii U Mini, 2022 would be Switch Mini... yeah, clearly the line would be drawn somewhere and I would think the most obvious place would be after the last 2D console and before the 3D console where everything looks like butts.
I could be wrong but I wouldn’t hold my breath for N64 Mini within the next year.
@ReaderRagfish did I say it did? I was responding the the conversation that Nintendo stated there would be no VC for Switch. Don’t put words in my mouth please.
@ReaderRagfish except there is classic games
Where is your Cobalt now?
I'd say a GameBoy Colour Classic is more likely at this point.
I knew that something was jarring since I saw the photos but I am sure that the N64 Classic Mini will be released eventually. Until then get Rare Replay.
@ReaderRagfish I said I wouldn’t count on them extending the subscription to cover other classic games.
🙏 for a real N64 mini soon!
@ShadJV They can keep releasing every year without the issues you point out. Don't forget Gameboy, Super Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance. DS. NES Model 2. SNES Model 2. Playchoice 10. VS System ETC.
They have a lot of options to go on for years before they have to figure out GameCube.
@ShadJV I still think N64 Mini is a stretch.
Would you say a PS1 mini is a stretch too?
@Tim_Vreeland but with that logic there’s little reason to think this year would be N64 Mini instead of Game Boy Mini or NES 2 or SNES 2.
@Crono1973 nah, because that’s the first console Sony has to work with, and Sony has a record of copying Nintendo (not saying Nintendo is pioneering this trend, but Sony notices when something their competitors do makes money).
@ShadJV So Nintendo shouldn't make an N64 Mini because it isn't their first console?
RIP YouTube
@Crono1973 you are using really interesting logic. Why SHOULD Nintendo do an N64 Mini? It wasn’t nearly as commercially successful as the NES, SNES, or PS1. I was giving reason Sony would consider PS1. Like I said, I could be wrong and they might release an N64 Mini, but I don’t see it as a given like many people seem to.
I think the authoritarian left have shut down youtube until the midterms
@ShadJV well actually the ps1mini was already announced but as for reasons for sony to work with they don't have many consoles to really work with list wise and ps1 is far simpler to a ps2. Now as for why a n64 mini, that's easy, its easy money because people really flock to get it especially collectors, the next logical step while keeping price high, and lastly it can drum up more hype for Nintendo in terms of social media even if its for a bit.
Kerning is a big deal, yo. - ...but I sure didn’t spot it on the first pass.
@ALinkttPresent @Truxton_4_Life works fine for me.
See, this is the smoking gun though: the photos are too high quality.
This feels like someone made a work of fake leak art, and couldn't help but embellish it. If you really wanted to leak this, why not just take a non sideways, straight up photo of the bloody thing? These photos are the definition of coy
@ShadJV I see so you don't think there will be an N64 Mini because the N64 wasn't as successful as the NES, SNES and PS1. I think they really have to now that the PS1 mini is coming.
@edgedino I’m not so sure it will be flocked to as much as you’re claiming. N64 sold notably worse than NES and SNES and hasn’t aged nearly as well. PS1 on the other hand is the second best selling home console of all time (only the top three passed 100 million) so it’s no contest, it sold almost as many consoles as NES and SNES put together.
NES nearly doubled N64 in sales so it was the most sensible choice. SNES Mini was easy because the architecture is very similar (hence why you can, with minimal effort, put NES roms on SNES Classic). I’d have to research but I believe it even uses most of the same parts internally. Once again, I don’t think N64 Mini is impossible. But I’ve been saying all year that I doubt we’re getting an N64 Mini this year, and given it’s October and we still haven’t heard anything, I’d bet money on that. Eventually, sure, everything EVENTUALLY seems to come full circle. I’m just saying, at this point in time, I find it unlikely that we’re getting one anytime soon.
@Crono1973 why would you think that? PS1 more than tripled N64 in sales. And MUCH more than tripled. Why would they want to directly put the N64 against the PS1 again after that? If anything, I’d think the opposite. Round 2 wouldn’t go any better, especially considering Nintendo was winning the “console wars” before the PS1 came along.
@ShadJV I guess we will just have to wait and see what happens.
@Crono1973 yep. As I said, I don’t think it’s outside the realm of possibility. Just don’t think it’s the most likely outcome this year.
@edgedino @Truxton_4_Life @ALinkttPresent YouTube is back up and running!
'and placement of letters have evidently been photoshopped with the help of computer software.'
You mean... like Photoshop? I don't think 'photoshopped' has become a generic verb quite yet.
I have a SNES Mini, I'd consider the NES but there aren't enough of the right games on it that I want. The N64 Mini would be worse. The games are tough to look at these days and they can't get what I consider to be the best games for it so as much as I loved my 64 I can't see a scenario where I would buy it. Now if they managed a Perfect Dark, Turok II, any of the THQ wrestling games, Golden Eye, Worms, Ogre Battle along with the 1st party titles I'd throw my money at it, but we all know those are mostly impossible
@ShadJV Using the sales of N64 in its heyday as your base reasoning isn't wrong, but you completely ignore the one thing that makes this mini-console trend successful: retro gaming fever and hype that affected many people even younger generations who never experienced the actual console back in the day. Internet has shaped public opinion on what was a commercial failure into "underrated/underappreciated" thing now. Pretty sure many people who buy NES/SNES classic never play it in their youth. Or people like me, I missed out N64 back in the day since I pick PS1. But later I'm intrigued with things I've missed out like N64 or Sega Saturn. Internet definitely helped with my fascination of those things.
All I'm saying is, there's another factor to consider than just its past sales performance. You can't compare these mini/classic console with the modern ones, as they're riding in retro gaming mania and nostalgia wave (either nostalgia of actual console or general nostalgia of its era like me who never own one).
@TF-Warrior why was I involved when I said it was working fine for me.
@Kalmaro what Virtual Console? The 3DS's? If it can't handle GBA, it's not coming to that one! The Wii U's? What's a Wii U?
@ShadJV I already know we ain't getting an n64 mini this year I already figured that out months ago and while it didn't sell as well there is the fact that there are more collectors then there were back then and also the many people who nvr tried but might want to. Though that still doesn't guarantee how many it would sell mind you but the true deciding factor would be price and included games, because if they had rare brand games like conkers bad fur day then people would buy that immediately for stuff like that.
@raisenv point acknowledged and you may be right. On the reverse side, it would be gambling on that. I guess we’ll see. Ultimately, Nintendo will do what they do, they don’t seem to stick to trends well.
@edgedino Rare games are unlikely given Microsoft currently owns Rare (though not impossible if Nintendo cuts Microsoft a nice enough deal). In fact, a lot of N64 games (aside from first party titles) are hard to get the rights to which is why the Virtual Console selections for N64 have been more limited. Rare’s games would certainly boost the sales of the device but ultimately, it’s a moot point there because chances are pretty low that Nintendo will get the go ahead of that anytime soon (aside from DK64 and maybe DKR, though the latter is less likely due to Banjo and Conker being in it). Collectors aren’t enough to warrant the cost of production. As for price, it would at least be as much as the SNES Mini ($80) but likely more ($90-$100 seems more likely). And given the trend of NES having 30 games and SNES having 20 games, I’d expect around 15 games (give or take a few), almost entirely first party (Mario Party would be unlikely due to the same reasons it hasn’t been on VC but Mario Party 2 would be likely). I acknowledged raisenv’s point that the internet hyping retro items as underrated could impact it positively - it’d be a gamble but not unheard of, we’ve gotten recent rereleases of some pretty notoriously bad games, and the N64 isn’t as bad as its sales imply, it was due to PS1 stealing its thunder. Which brings me back to what I original stated, that I don’t think we’d be getting this soon (i.e. this year or early next year, maybe even next year at all), as they’d be pitting it against the PS1 Mini and it’s not as sure of a hit as the NES and SNES were. And you’ve acknowledged about it not coming this year so we seem to be on similar pages - I never thought this would NEVER be a thing, just not yet. People had been insisting that N64 Mini would come this year since the beginning of the year and I’ve been skeptical of that the entire time, I didn’t think Mini systems were going to be an annual thing. Leaks like this imply an N64 is coming soon and I don’t think it is. I think there’s a chance we’ll get one late next year (I still would put odds against it but not by much), and by 2020 then sure. But not yet. That’s all I meant from the start.
I did admittedly word my original comment poorly and am going to edit it for clarity.
I definitely don't think an n64 mini is coming this yes. I remember preordering my NES classic for toys r us in July the year it came out and the release date was like November and it was announced before toys r us had them for preorder. The snes classic I believe took preorders in July last year and released late september so yeah I highly doubt they'll release it this year plus they probably still want to sell more nesc and snesc which are still on the shelves.
Also while I don't believe that an n64 mini will be releasing soon I still don't know if the pictures are actually fake. They could be real for an early prototype since it does take a long time to develop these things if they plan on releasing this sometime next year. Also if it was a prototype it would explain the font and things since prototypes usually don't add a lot of details.
@ShadJV I agree with a lot of it but there is still a slim chance it might come next year but ultimately it also goes down to how well their year goes for 2019, if its sluggish to people they might try and speed something like the n64 mini or something else surprising to build up some additionally positive income, and if they do release a n64 mini it would more then likely take a long time anyways to obtain licenses for games that they don't own. Yet there is also the chance they might skip an n64 mini for something cheaper like a Gameboy mini or such, on a side note 90-100$ would definently be the standerd they would do for an n64 mini by going with their pattern but I could see them keeping up with 20 games but it would also have to boil down to how many controllers they deal with which is also a very valuable situation for it since if they included 4 controllers it might even raise the price more to compensate or only do 2 and then a shortage of n64 mini controllers that are separate may ensure. As for rare brand games from Microsoft there is also the small, conspiracy theory, chance Microsoft may let them use some to build a stronger lasting trust or a small discount more likely to ensure and build upon against Sony but that's as I said more conspiracy theory like of an idea.
On a side note though it could be better to not update the message just so people can see how this all happened for future readers. (if anyone actually does that anymore)
1:13 "I'm not saying it absolutely isn't real".... actually, that's kinda exactly what you (or your headline writer) is saying Besides, these pictures are on the internet, and if you can't trust the internet, who can you trust?
@ShadJV Many of is love the N64 and want to see this.
However: just because they released two classic consoles does not mean they will release this for every system they ever made.
There probably won't be a GameCube mini for 8 years or more.
Classic line up would make sense right now up to N64 and GBC.
No, Switch won't be getting N64 games for a long time. And even then, no rare games would be released for "rent". With a classic you can at least back it and add all the games you have and play them on a modern tv nicely.
And your price argument is a not silly. People paid 60 and 80 for the NES and SNES respectively. We can play these games on our phones, yet we wanted this hardware. Many of us love our older games.
@Kalmaro Yes they did. The virtual console is scrapped and never happening again.
Whilst this is fake it is also what it will look like when it does happen.
@HobbitGamer
I'm here and I CONFIRM to you that the N64 Classic Mini is real...
Those pictures are preprod images...
Haven't seen any pictures of a N64 classic mini, and it doesn't really matter. It's an old console, I've played the games on my N64, don't need to play them again. Maybe if they're remade as modern games, but until then, nah.
If it's fake, but super close to an actual mini in development, does that make the fake real?
Wow, and I thought my SNES was covered in Nicotine Stains, but the one he's holding is even worse!
Anyways, if it does come along, my original still works so no real point in me getting it. Also, I still have Banjo, Golden Eye and Perfect Dark which wont be on this, so it's still a better console than a mini will ever be
lemme put on my 2006 face here:
O RLY?
i am not a fan of these mini-consoles anyway
I'd say this fake is real, by which I mean this is a real fake.
I would only buy a real N64 Classic Mini if it includes jet force gemini, conker bad fur day and both banjo and kazooie/tooie.
This is fake for sure!
@ShadJV oh they will release a n64mini. People will pay for it just to have a nostalgia of playing two of the best games of all time (plus many others)
I agree with the article/video that this is a fake.
Amused to see the "it's fake but it'll look like this when it does launch"... well yea, it'll look like an N64 console, but scaled down in size...! I do not expect the controller port cover to look anything like the one in the fake images - it's clearly too big and too rigid. It will be like the SNES Classic port cover, which is much smaller and folds out of the way - so you can actually plug a controller in! Potentially it'll be split in half too - so two parts fold out for ports 1-2 and 3-4. One long piece seems like a hazard.
My firm belief is that the N64 Classic was going to come this holiday, but Nintendo have delayed it due to negotiations for key titles taking longer than they had anticipated / the negotiations became a much wider-reaching discussion that required more time to settle on an actual deal. I'm thinking things like a remake of Goldeneye for Xbox One (and Switch) and potentially Microsoft DLC characters for Smash Bros. - Banjo & Kazooie seems possible.
It's unlikely Nintendo caught wind of a PS1 Mini releasing this holiday, but certainly now that it's announced, they'll probably be happy they had to delay the N64 Classic.
Holiday 2019 seems sensible at this point, but as a previous comment mentioned, if Nintendo need something to generate income faster in 2019 (which is not beyond the realms of possibility looking at the Switch new release slate!), then potentially we will see it earlier in the year - maybe Easter?
This is fake and laughably so, but what's also laughable, is people harping on about a Game Boy Classic Mini, because that is even less likely to happen...
@ReaderRagfish If that is supposed to be Dutch, then I wonder what the hell I've been learning to speak for all these decades...
I think the most obvious is the port cover
Fake leaks are going to be the absolute end of me. Every midnight (well, for the Italian time zone at least) a new video of Youtube channel LaxChris pops up in my feed and every time a new (obviously fake) leak about Smash Ultimate from 4chan is covered.
Being a Smash fan is great, but every game's pre-release period singlehandedly makes it also a hard pain to endure.
TO ALL OF YOU ! Now just THINK !

@Tim_Vreeland Why on earth would they release the refresh of the SNES in mini version? That makes absolutely zero sense.
Oh, and before somebody say something, that list was modified the saturday 13th of october 2018. Hour : 19:31:12.
Hope it rings the bell...
We’ll never see an N64 Mini because it is unlikely Nintendo would be able to licence GoldenEye and Perfect Dark off EA/Activision/Microsoft/MGM and an N64 without Perfect Dark is a waste.
Man I would love an N64 Mini, but I just don't see it happening for a long time, if ever. For one thing, without Rare, I don't think they could release Perfect Dark or Goldeneye, and those are two of the killer apps for N64. Pretty doubtful we'd see either of the Banjo games either, and that's two more killer apps that would be missing. Oh and I forgot Killer Instinct Gold, that's a fighting game taken off the list. No Diddy Kong racing, there goes a racing game. Rare really did submit a lot of games to the N64, a Mini would be missing a lot of great games. At best, we could hope for Donkey Kong 64 to make the cut since Nintendo owns the rights to DK.
This would mostly leave the first party games that I think most people played to death (Mario 64, OoT, Smash Bros, etc) unless we get some solid third parties on board. For me, putting both Goemon N64 games on the Mini would seriously sweeten the pot. Maybe give us the complete version of F-Zero. Harvest Moon 64 would be nice too.
I was with him all the way until he said the N64 controller was bad, im sorry but i would use that thing forever if it meant I never had to hold a single joy con ever again
It will happen but in 2019
For those saying it’s not worth it without Rare, just using Nintendo’s non-Rare, non-licensed games gives me
Mario
Pilotwings
Wave Race
Mario Kart
Starfox
Yoshis Story
1080
F-Zero
Ocarina of Time
Mario Party 1/2/3
Mario Golf
Smash Bros
Pokemon Snap
Mario Tennis
Majoras Mask
Excitebike
Pokemon Puzzle League
Dr Mario 64
Paper Mario
That’s 20 without including any licensed games like the 3 Star Wars games, New Tetris, Command and Conquer, Starcraft or the F1 WGP Games. Or Ridge Racer 64, or games like Mischief Makers and the Top Gear games that Nintendo published in different territories, or Sin and Punishment. Or third-Party, non-18 rated games like Mystical Ninja, Rayman 2.
@electrolite77
You're definitely right, but for a lot of people, an N64 without Goldeneye isn't an N64 at all. The Rare games were pretty huge. For me, the Mystical Ninja games would be enough but Rayman 2 would also be nice.
No Starcraft though. That was a disaster.
@Onion
Yeah but they aren’t an option it would seem. So if the choice is release an N64 Mini without or not release one at all, they’re far better to release it. Plus it might be for the best, as anyone with nostalgia for Goldeneye doesn’t have it shattered by playing it after 21 years of improving technology😋
@electrolite77 I literally played Goldeneye for the first time in... must be 17 years... last weekend, and actually it holds up OK. Sure it looks pretty terrible (Jungle was particularly rancid), but the gameplay and nostalgia combined to prove enough to make it very enjoyable in single player, and the 4 player death match was genuinely great still. The N64 Classic, if it secured Goldeneye, would make the game appear a lot nicer (proper emulation versus a cheap SCART to HDMI adapter) so I'm all for it. The other thing to keep in mind, for me, is if Goldeneye manages to get on the N64 Classic, it opens up a significant opportunity for it to be released as a proper HD remake - which it genuinely deserves!
A N64 Mini would be the best way to kill all the good memories of those games by realising how poorly they have aged.
@NIN10DOXD Guys! I found a triggered lunatic social justice warrior with a Bowsette avatar!
@nocdaes
Oh yeah don’t get me wrong, if there’s any chance they can get Goldeneye they absolutely should, I just don’t think the absence of that or other Rare games should stop Nintendo releasing one.
I’m speaking in generalisations but your post there suggests an awareness that it wasn’t going to look as good as you remember. Maybe you have some awareness of why, like the difference in TV tech and Console display tech between the 90s and now.
Again I’m generalising furiously but there may be a lot of people out there in the mass market that don’t have that. I suspect there’s going to be plenty of people shocked at the gap between their nostalgia-fuelled memories and how 3D games from the late 90s actually look now compared to e.g. Destiny 2 (chosen because I played it last night). A good emulator and HDMI port can negate some of the deficiencies but it isn’t going to make these games look in any way good. It’ll be really interesting to see the reaction to the PS Mini this Christmas anyway.
*Disclosure-I have a PS Mini preordered and would be first in line for an N64 equivalent
@electrolite77 Yep, completely agree with you. It'll definitely play a part, but I guess once someone has bought the thing, it's pretty much irrelevant as its unlikely they'd return it versus displaying it on a shelf.
That said, in all honesty, even at the time when I think back, I do remember thinking the jump from 2D to 3D was pretty ugly. We went from highly detailed pixelated sprites to comparatively ugly polygons and such... BUT crucially, the 3D was entirely new and for me at least it's that experience, along with the new gameplay experience that made it so awesome.
It's a common gripe about this period of gaming (so it's clearly relevant and true right, as everyone says it!) in terms of how the games look, but I do truly believe the nostalgia comes from the gameplay - and in terms of Goldeneye, when I played last weekend, that's still in check!
@NIN10DOXD You're an SJW for scrolling the comments acting like a keyboard warrior looking to start arguements. That's what SJW's do.
"I'm sick of these underpowered ports with low frame rates coming out on the Switch!"
Two articles later...
"I really can't wait for the N64 mini to come out!"
@Switcher What makes zero sense about releasing the model 2 SNES with different games?
Gee...I don’t know....how about the re-tooling of a production line + new molds + testing....all in the name of what could be a simple flash rom update?
