Nintendo's pink puffball Kirby hasn't been sighted since the surprise release of Kirby Fighters 2 on the Switch last year.
This doesn't necessarily mean HAL Laboratory has forgotten about him, though. Following on from an interview late last year, when the company teased new games, merchandise and more in the future - Kirby Star Allies director, Shinyu Kumazaki, has now touched on the "next phase" of the series.
With Kirby Star Allies support now complete, the team is busy "planning for the next stage" of Kirby's future. Here's a bit of insight from Kumazaki about what's currently going on at the Kirby HQ, courtesy of a translation from Nintendo Everything:
"And now, finally, we can move on to the next phase! I still try new things at work every day, talking with my colleagues about where to take the [Kirby] series next. Together with them, even if only to please a single fan, we’re planning for the next stage of our future. The team is a culmination of the best aspects of the Kirby franchise, and we hope you’ll look forward to what we have coming next.”
Kirby's development team also previously spoke about how they wanted the next big project to be the "pinnacle of Kirby games" and to create something that exceeds the games in the series before it.
What would you like to see from the developers of Kirby this year and in the future? Leave a comment down below.

looks like we're entering the kirby multiverse
Got my fingers crossed for Kirby 3d
A new Kirby Air Ride would be interesting. 2Ds games are fine but I'd like to see something new personally.
Does this qualify as an announcement of an announcement of an announcement?
Can't wait to look forward to what I can look forward to.
Still love you Kirby!
As long as the title of their next project doesn’t start with ‘Star Allies’, I’m good
@CurtisABXY Totally agree... Very bored of 2D Kirby/Yoshi/Mario now tbh... even Metroid to an extent. Most of the recent 2D games in those franchises were far from inspiring... Nintendo and their partners needs to stop acting like they're budget indie developers and start giving us more 3D adventure/platform games that aren't Mario and Zelda... whether it be Donkey Kong, Kirby or whatever.
A new Kirby Air Ride would be very much appreciated too!
3D kirby, HYPE HYPE.
Let's go! Give me everything!
@CurtisABXY It would be so coold if we got 3d game's like mario odyssey, and BOTW for game series like, Kirby, yoshi, DK, and other's.
I really hope its a 3D game or at least a hybrid type like Mario 3D world. The series as of now feels like NSMB by releasing a touched up version of the same game every few years.
Make a better version of Amazing Mirror with a Metroidvania style map
I personally want to see a sequel or remake to Kirby Air Ride. That or the basic 2D formula finally converted into a 3D platformer like the fans have been hoping for so long.
It's just a personal wish really, but I can't really see myself getting excited for the next announcement if it doesn't shake up what we've already been getting these past 10 years or so.
If it's another 2D/2.5D game, I'll be disappointed most likely, but as long as it's a good game it'll be better than the treatment other franchises get that aren't mainline at least.
This is such a fun time for Nintendo! I am expecting far too much from e3, but I don't even care anymore!!!
I still haven't even played Star Allies. Is it worth playing? Last Kirby games for me were Triple Deluxe and Robobot, and I really loved them.
Dream Course 2, please
Looking forward to hearing what Kirby will eat next lol.
I've gotta agree, I really want a 3d Kirby game. Of course it would have to be good, but I bet they could pull it off. I can, and will, hope for this outcome.
I think at this point something 3D is a must. The Kirby franchise is ready for that breath of the wild moment to reinvigorate the formula, bring in some new fans and bring back some old fans.
I’m excited to see what they have planned. Air ride 2 would also be cool….
@Giygas_95 I love both games. Triple Deluxe and Robobot. But Star Allies was a disappointment. Way to easy, even for a Kirby game. Not very original and the multiplayer too chaotic. Its not a bad game but does not come close to the two before mentioned.
I'd REALLY like a 3D game, but not like blowout blast or battle royal, I mean a full out HUGE open world game with EVERYWHERE being connected. I would prefer it to be more similar to BotW, not SMO, as in make the game more focused on the main game and not the postgame. Also wheelie rider similar to Jaxi from SMO, but you can also use any copy ability while riding it.
@Giygas_95 Get it. It had the most impact on Kirby lore than literally any other game in the series. Even more than Kirby 64.
I've got to agree it had flaws compared to the previous ones, it was a HUGE downgrade to remove the 3D warp star mechanic, but it had its own good sides.
Please i want a new 3d Kirby with new bosses.
Just a Kirby game that is enough to keep the majority hooked like the modern Kirby trilogy (I guess everyone is calling it that now) and offers great replay ability. I don't want to state the obvious but the series really doesn't have an excuse not to go 3D, at this point, even if it turns out to be mediocre and not even mainline. At least, it is a step forward for the series in general. That being said, once HAL drops the bomb on the new Kirby game, I'm going to jump right on the band wagon and preorder it. Although Star Allies was somewhat meh, it was fan service and part of me appreciates that but I much rather they have stuck with implementing new ideas and/or make the game play somewhat longer. I get the game was focused on multiplayer this time around, I mean the name is in the title but come on! If I can fix a bowl of popcorn, take out a good book to read all while watching Whispy Woods get himself flame mignon by my partners while I am shaking my head in disappointment then this feels like someone is holding my hand while I am trespassing on his territory! Defend your home brother! You can't fight me until you earn the right to or at least turn back into a machine! I actually preferred you that way GEEZ! Also, who ever decided to add a difficulty meter for the boss rush mode in that game, THANK YOU. I love a challenge and YES I know it is Kirby and it is meant to be simplistic until you do the true arena. People complained that Planet Robobot's True Arena was hard but I didn't think that was the case up until the last fight where the boss gave me the middle finger when it was about to bite the big one which never happens and I forgot Kirby final bosses be weird and plain disturbing sometimes (and I absolutely love it) and apparently I'm an idiot. For those that played that game, you know what I'm talking about. I like stuff like that but I'd much rather have a difficulty meter included for the whole game kind of like the first Kirby game just to make it more challenging! Like get through the game on 1 HP and you can't copy anyone's abilities or fly infinitely (Kirby 64) for that matter and give some players the ability to fight the True Arena bosses with 1 HP but hey it is what it is.
I'm SO HYPED. Maybe something will be shown off at e3? If they manage to get Kirby in the 3D realm and maintain the Superstar Moveset idea for powers then that would be so solid. Boss rushes in the Kirby series is also where a lot of the replay and challenge comes from. I had fun doing power runs in original KSS and Planet Robobot.
Kirby 3D is long overdue. It's seriously time to step it up now. You can't do 2d sidescrollers forever
It's time for Kirby to make a leap to fully realized 3D and to up the difficulty a bit- or at least have the option. If that's not on the table then I'd take new grander versions of a Kirby Super Star or Kirby Air Ride type of games. And as an aside... bring back the Kirby: Right Back at Ya! cartoon/anime for the youth.
... Also it might be time for a Meta-Knight (maybe Metal Gear Rising-type?) spinoff.
... But most of all, I want a KING DEDEDE game!!! (my main in Smash, aka 'the Wun True King'- in other words not you K. Rool 😤)
... Wun can only hope.
More Rainbow Curse!
Blowout Blast 2!
I'm happy to join the chorus of cries for a 3D Kirby game, but I have to say I found Star Allies so poor that I feel like we are overdue a 2D Kirby !!
As a massive Kirby fan who thought Planet Robobot was the pinnacle of the series, I was so disappointed with Star Allies. In 1 player it was just a confusing mess to play, it was irratating instead of enjoyable. Like Yoshis Crafted World, the new 'gimmick' just didn't really work.
I'd really like something like triple deluxe with the side games that were AWESOME, but with a little bit of adventure's wii style (for the story side since i liked kirby star allies' one, but that was more of an "episodic" story if i'm saying it right) for the 3d game, i'd like that to be more of a side game than the game itself (and plz give us more worlds ;-; )
that's basically it :1
thx (´▽`ʃ♡ƪ)
I’ll buy it even if it’s bad! Let’s go Kirby!
"The team is a culmination of the best aspects of the Kirby franchise"
Since Sakurai is working on smash, this statement is false
How can such a charming character have so many boring games..
first 3D mainline Kirby game for the 30th anniversary of the Kirby franchise in 2022?
Kirby get his first All 3d world game like Mario 3d world, maybe it will appears at E3 🤩
@Clyde_Radcliffe 3D games are too much costly and risky for a company like Nintendo to develop, is better for Nintendo to stick with 2D for most of they franchises and only Mario have the only honor of releasing 3D plataformers, 2D games is always better then 3D games.
@NinChocolate Bad? Kirby? How can use those two words in the same sentence? I think we'll be fine
@avictorao ANYWAY...
Loved KSS and and the Sakuari directed games and I agree with @splubber They lying if they saying they got all the best People but Sakurai isn’t a part of it. UNLESS omg what if SURPRISE Sakurai secretly overseeing some aspect of this game. I doubt it. That man is too busy with Smash Bros still but a girl can dream! Even if just to give a bit of input.
Really hoping for a 3D platformer Kirby game next. The last boss in Star Allies was so good. To have an entire game like that would be amazing.
LMFAO I KNEW EVERYONE WOULD SAY 3D. I actually prefer 2D but with more content and better ways of exploration
Like what Yoshi did in Crafted World
3D Kirby game announcement at E3 for the 30th anniversary in 2022?
Crossing my fingers for something kirby announced at e3.
As a huge Kirby fan who enjoyed most mainline titles, I am both excited and worried for the next Kirby title in development. I am excited because HAL Laboratory has wowed me with the last four mainline entries for their always-fun Super Star gameplay, but I am worried that this new direction for the mainline games will change so much that it may not feel like a Kirby game anymore to me. I mean, I do kind of want the formula to change, but I still want to play a Kirby game at the same time.
Either way, as long as the next Kirby mainline game retains the expanded movesets per copy ability, the elemental effects from Star Allies, and the helper system, I'll be fine.
@Snatcher too risky and costly for Hal Laboratory to develop/handle.
@ronb44 no only the Mario franchise should have the honor of having 3D games released on Nintendo consoles, everyone need to stop, with this idea that 3D can be good, 2D will always then 3D games, and less risky and costly too.
@Giancarlothomaz actually 3D games can be cool if handled well
And 2D & 3D are two completely different things to actually say that one is better than another
But I agree in parts with You
It's risky, costly
And I prefer a 2D game being the mainline
Then they can work more on gimmicks, abilities, design, bosses and plot
A 3D game could be a side game
I really wish Sakurai would oversee a 3D Kirby. And also help direct the development of a new AAA IP for Nintendo. Also help GF develop Pokemon. Or you know... Just don't waste Sakurai's immense talent on yet another Smash game!
Kirby: Star Warriors please. Yknow. Dynasty Warriors spin-off like Hyrule Warriors, Age of Calamity and Fire Emblem Warriors.. except with Kirby characters.
Nothing against Kirby, but this is insane already. How about something new, a new IP or a series, that got no attention for such a long time. Sooner or later, a fatigue will hit, which will hurt the series... if this is not already happening.
@Ulanda Part-Time UFO and BOXBOY!
I think its time to take the Kirby formula and apply it to the 3D platformer genre. Playing a Mario Odyssey kind of game as Kirby where instead of capturing enemies and becoming them, you inhale enemies and gain their abilities sounds like so much fun.
@shineget64 this and with better AI.
I’m really hoping big spin-offs return. Feels like these days when they make a spin-off, it’s cobbled together out of old parts, is pretty safe with Kirby’s typical mechanics, and is sold for a quick buck on the eShop. They’re fun, but they could be better in my eyes.
I’d love to see another effort like Rainbow Curse—with a new way to play (barring the Canvas Curse inspiration), a gorgeous art style, a new engine, and a retail release. The last one we had was Extra Epic Yarn, which while good was primarily a port of 2010’s Epic Yarn meant to keep 3DS sales going. Here’s hoping we can get another wild new game mechanic soon!
@Kirby_Girl huh.. that went quick. Guess I have to give them a look. Thanks
everyone else has already suggested it but id really like a 3d kirby game too, but my own personal suggestion is maybe a pc port, i understand itll probably only be on nintendo consoles knowing how stuff has been and is but, i think itd be a good idea if its possible, i mean more people could play it and itd be something new since most if not all kirby and nintendo games have been on nintendo consoles mainly so, why not have that be a new unique thing too
Give meh 3D Kirby and 3D DK, Ninty
I'm excited to see what they do next! 2D Kirby can be excellent. I second a game like Kirby & the Amazing Mirror, or Kirby Super Star Ultra. 3D Kirby also sounds very exciting, hope they do make a 3D game eventually, or next, as that'd be great.
@Giygas_95 I enjoyed it at lot, but the difficulty for almost everything except a few unlockable modes at the highest difficulty, is really really easy. It was still really fun for me and it does add new things to the Kirby lore, especially at the ending. I thought the story was good, gameplay was fun, but it found it the easiest game out of all Kirby games that I have played. Bosses can go down so easily too. I would say get it anyway, you may want to look at other opinions on google or Metacritic, but I know for me and at least a lot of others it still was a good game. I loved a lot of aspects about it, just the difficulty.
After decades of retreading familiar ground, it's high time Nintendo tried some more 3D.
They've made more than enough 2D platformers this decade.
@CurtisABXY Agreed, except for me I’d like a return to something akin to the style of Dreamland 2. (Or the original)
got another suggestion actually, maybe have some characters wich havent been seen in a long time (or atleast not as a legit story-important character) return, like marx or magolor or nightmare maybe, not like as a reference or like the dream staff in kirby star allies tho, but like, have them actually return and be useful and part of the story or somethin
@clvr
They haven’t created any 2D platformers this decade.
@SalvorHardin ???
DK, NSMBU, all the Kirbys, 3 Yoshi games, Hey! Pikmin, Zip Lash...
and I'm probably forgetting some.
As long as they make it at least remotely challenging, I'm in!
@Giancarlothomaz Stop repeating this, it's asinine. Everything else wrong with it aside, Zelda exists.
Honestly, I don't care what they make next, I'll probably be happy as long as it's Kirby.
But I hope it's an exploration game. That's what made the earlier Kirby games and most of the newer ones so fun- you felt like you were exploring a cool new place instead of just levels. At LEAST as 3D as Kirby 64, but go full Mario Galaxy 3D and I shall scream in absolute joy.
A planet robobot 2 sort of deal would also be rad. I won't get my hopes up too high so they can surprise me and I can scream again-
Also, I can dream about a Kirby RPG but it probably won't happen haha XD (But just imagine the POSSIBILITIES of PAPER KIRBY-)
