Today sees the arrival of Mario Party Superstars on the Nintendo Switch. Believe it or not, but it's actually the second Mario Party game to be released on the hybrid system.
The first one, as you might recall, was Super Mario Party, and it got released back in 2018. This latest entry takes a much more classic approach, reintroducing 100 minigames from the Nintendo 64 and GameCube generation of Mario Party. Of course, this throwback to earlier Mario Party games has got us wondering if you'll be picking up the latest entry.
If you've already decided, you can purchase a physical copy right now. And if you're still not sure, be sure to check out our Nintendo Life review.

Probably grab it but disappointed with how few boards there are.
Hey, it's finally the add-on for more boards that everyone wanted! Can't wait for Brilliant Mario Party EX
Gonna play this with my SO and we are gonna get in a fistfight
It wouldn't be Mario Party without it
@PBandSmelly What’s an SO?

After the utter disappointment of Super Mario Party, and Mario Party 10 before that, I can't believe I'm saying it...but yup, I'm in. Already paid for. I watched a ton of reviews today to make sure, but yup - this is exactly the Mario Party game I wanted them to make. From the board variety and size, the lack of gimmicks, getting rid of motion crap, speeding up the turns, and of course online play - this is the first Nintendo game I've truly been excited about for a long time.
Too short on content. Nintendo keeps launching half-complete projects and pretending they deserve $60
Yes. I longed for a good Mario Party on Switch that I can also play where ever I go, and Superstars is looking to be that.
Hey where’s the option “I have no friends to play this with”
I'm a solo player, so party games aren't really my thing. I can't imagine this being very fun solo
I pre-ordered it right after E3, but I will say 5 boards and 10 characters feels... Underwhelming. I think 8-10 boards(considering they're remakes not originals) and 12 characters would've been much better. And 5 is especially bad considering the fact that every single Hudson Soft Console Mario Party had 6 boards. Apart from the first... Which had 8. I do hope we see boards in DLC.
@HobbitGamer I mean to be fair in Mario Party's golden age (1999-2007) they released a new Mario Party yearly, that's just how the series has historically been.
@PBandSmelly OH! Right, I had one of those once! Seems I’ve forgotten!
Should have added content to MP8 on Switch already. Fn Nintendo trying to get by on the absolute bare minimum. They are wearing on me. Im not buying this.
Definitely going to get this at some point but the price of $79.95 in Australia means that I will have to wait a little longer. I had two of the three N64 Mario Party games (think 1 and 2) back when I was in my 20s (the early 2000s). Not sure / can not remember what ever happened to my N64, just know that I have not played it in years, so it will be good to play some of these mini games / boards once again.
@RandomGamesAndStuff I have to agree. The game looks like a fantastic trip down memory lane but 5 boards is just too slim. I’m sure there will be free dlc to give this some variety, I just hate that for those of us that buy physical, we won’t be getting this on the cart.
I will pick this up… eventually.
I really didn't think this would be any good but I was wrong, this is now my favourite online multiplayer game on switch
@TYRANACLES they are very replayable
@CheekyZelda thanks to online, you don’t need friends. You can match up with random people
If they do do a DLC, what are the chances they tie it to the NSO+E like ACNH (which I know you can buy separately)? That could bring me around, potentially.
I dunno, I'm really not sure. I like how you can play online with strangers. Might be fun to knock back a few drinks and see if I can beat some randos. Kinda pricy for an infrequent drinking game. Maybe at some point in the future... Who knows, perhaps they'll do one of those 30% off first party sales that includes this in a year or two.
@CheekyZelda It's okay. The online is slightly less terrible this time around.
Pre-loaded it after reading up on the leaks. It's not perfect but it's a proper Mario Party game which is something we haven't had in years. It's definitely still much lighter on content than I would have liked though so hopefully we might see some DLC down the track this time now that we have a game on Switch with decent board mechanics unlike Super.
A 2nd Mario Party game on Switch gives me hope for Mario Kart 9! (even though there is none)
Already pre-ordered. It seems solid enough & it's a popular series in my household. Hopefully, they'll add more boards and more content via DLC later. Like they did with Mario Golf.
Yes the second there is a discount from the pre-order price which always dips a week or two after release
We literally have a toy WWF Belt we use for "Mario Party Champion", so it's time to dust that off lol
Definitely a buy but most likely as a Christmas gift like Metroid Dread (thank goodness they gave us a demo).
Probably not, Nintendo just don't put enough effort into these to warrant a purchase for me and I see no reason why there are still so few boards in these. We had more and better boards in the Gamecube entries then the new game on Switch and this one, if you're remaking them give us 10 boards at least from across the franchise. It looks like I'll just be sticking with the Gamecube entries but people will buy these in the millions anyway as they did with the last one despite it being pretty poor
I probarbly will at some point as my kids loved the last one and its one of the few games i can get the wife playing. It was our first MP game but the lack of boards soon wore thin with me. Disappointed by the lack of boards once again and the removal of the character dice but the mini games should still be fun i suppose. Some DLC boards would be nice even if i begrudgingly have to pay for them even tho they should have been in the game to start with. Will be interesting to see if N leave this version to rot like they did Super.
(EDIT) I broke and got it.
No, not at this moment. I don't know if I even going to get it.
My sister ordered a copy so the family can all play together. She's not much of a gamer but she does like Mario Party. I'll eventually buy a few copies for myself for the collection and because the game supports local wireless play.
Could you please add the poll option "I'm still furious this game isn't a DLC to the 2018 version, so no even though I really want it"?
I’ll definitely get it for the holidays (Mario Party is always great fun when we have family over), but I’ll probably wait until December to get it. I’m already buying three games in November - Unpacked, the Animal Crossing DLC, and Shining Pearl - which means the entirety of my gaming budget for the month is fully booked!
Hot cakes! Get yer hot cakes!
im not feeling too compelled by the party rn. this still feels they drip feed the series with minimal content that doesnt get any dlc, and "no nonsense online support" is whats supposed to hold us off until they resell another MP in a year or two
I was in at E3!!! This is the MARIO PARTY experience I have wanted to share with my kids. SUPER MARIO PARTY was so lackluster. I hope to find it in my mailbox tomorrow so I can party with my family!
All the fuss and moaning about NSO Expansion pricing, yet 70% of poll responses intend to buy this game at some point?!
I find it bizarre that this is a seperate game. It should be paid DLC for the barebones Mario Party game they already released - moreso given its all old content anyway.
Also, how does it make any sense for Nintendo to be releasing remastered N64 content when they've just launched N64 on NSO?! Since when did Nintendo get so poor with their planning? Seems the way they handled Mario 64 isn't the exception but the new norm?!
I voted for ‘Eventually’, but I actually pre-ordered it. I’m looking forward to it as I’ve never played Mario Party before,, but it won’t be played until Xmas, as it’s a gift from Santa for my offspring. She’s been hyped for it since seeing the Treehouse for it. It looks like it’ll be a good family game for the holidays.
Probably will pick it up at some point. I'm assuming as the games are from the N64 / GameCube era they won't have unnecessary motion controls forced upon them.
My first experience of Mario party was the first one released on the Nintendo Wii (Mario Party 8 I think) so these will feel like new games to me
@nmanifold he, there's always been a single Mario Kart, even if this time is a port (but there is even Mario Kart Home Circuit), but WiiU was the only one with a single Mario Party (3 on N64, 4 on GC, 2 on Wii... even 3 on 3DS!)
@nocdaes I really can't understand this "should have been a DLC". Super Mario Party was unplayable on Switch Lite, so if these contents would have been a DLC, a Lite owner had to buy a 60$ game PLUS the DLC only to be able to play the DLC contents? This is a separate game exactly because it played in a different way (classic buttons against motion controls of Super).
There really doesn't need to be 4 different no options
@nmanifold well, Mario party has a history of having multiple games in every generation, while Mario Kart has never got more than 1. So, don’t hold your breath.
@fafonio True! Nintendo seem to be not counting the Wii U as a generation (it's when I first bought Maria Kart 8).
Preordered this one, and I’ll play it tonight with the wife and son tonight and will probably play it on Halloween with the extended family. Love Mario Party. Unlike a lot of people commenting (it seems), I love Super Mario Party and have had hours and hours of fun playing it with other people and I expect the same for this.
First game I ever pre-ordered, can't wait till it arrives! ❤️😁
Day one! What impressed me very much so far are the incredible beautiful graphics, it really look like prerendered stuff on my OLED Switch! And the game is so much fun!
I'd like to pick it up someday when it goes on sale. It's definitely not a $60 purchase, though.
Buying this day one just because it is the first full localized Nintendo game in brazilian portuguese. We are so happy with this here in Brazil.
@Gwynbleidd I referenced NSO because some of the content in this game is from the N64 Mario Party game. With N64 now on NSO, it is likely Mario Party will come to that in due course. So just like Mario 64 you end up with a situation where you are literally paying for the same game twice!
(I know historically we are often paying for the same games/content multiple times with Nintendo, but as far as I am aware, these recent examples are the first time it's happened on the same console?!!)
No, the Mario Party games have never interested me.
@SilverM My issue is that Nintendo have made a conscious decision to abandon Super Mario Party to instead bring another full price game that works with all Switch consoles.
This game was blatantly intended as DLC for Super Mario Party, but they have instead converted it into a full price game to fix their mistake at not supporting the Lite originally.
They had a choice to make, and they went with the £50 option. Fair play to them, it does make business sense, I just think they should have chosen the middle ground which would be adding it to Super Mario Party for a DLC price, or you can buy the full game if you didn't already have Super Mario Party.
They made their choice. I do respect it, but I ain't buying it.
@nocdaes Well, yes, to be fair I agree that they should have made a DLC with 3-4 boards and 30-40 minigames OR a free update (in that case even with just a new board and 10-15 minigames) for Super Mario Party, but this game still have a sense to exist as a standalone game (not only for its contents, even for its QoL, like the option to remove the bonus stars, things that they would have never introduced as a DLC).
@dustinprewitt you can do online matchmaking with randoms
@dustinprewitt I have played a few on 3ds solo. Still pretty fun, but I am a casual gamer
@Alfredo18 The reason why i bought it today on release.
Having a Mario Party party for my 30th tomorrow 🎉😁🎂 cannot wait to PARTY!
Absolutely. I just got my copy from Amazon just a bit ago but I'm currently eating dinner so I'll put some hours later. My sis is rearing to go as well.
I have no friends, no family, and online against strangers or just against the CPU is not fun. So I won't buy it. Even though I really like Mario Party, especially when I had friends / family.
Eventually, but full price for a remix of 20 year old games feels a little silly. I would have preferred they just remaster MP2.
I had a wedding today so I’ll pick it up tomorrow… we’ll I suppose it’s so late now that I’ll technically pick it up today (Saturday) lol! I’m hyped to play this with my friends. Minus the 30 turn limit this is everything I want a Mario Party to be!
Picked up my copy today as a Xmas prezzy for the kiddos. I’ll be tempted to play it before then though! 😅
I’ve never tried a MP game so it’ll be something to look forward to this Christmas.
Never played a Mario Party game, always thought I should, this seems a good place to start.
I prefer single player games, I left physical board games behind years ago in favour of video games, so not sure if this works as a single player game.
This is a pass from me.
Read to many negative comments. And what i saw isnt worth the €60 imo.
