Update: The free Hopping Mappy theme is now available to download for free for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. Remember, if you have an active subscription, PAC-MAN 99 itself is also free – what are you waiting for?
Original Article (Mon 2nd Aug, 2021 10:15 BST): Nintendo Switch Online exclusive PAC-MAN 99 has been downloaded more than four million times, Bandai Namco has revealed.
The game, which is only available as a free download to those who have subscribed to Nintendo's online service, has managed to reach that milestone in just under four months following its April 2021 release. The news of its achievement was shared during a PAC-MAN 99 Challenge livestream hosted by Bandai Namco over the weekend.
During the show, it was also revealed that more content is still on the way. As spotted by Nintendo Everything, it's so far been confirmed that a new theme based on Namco's 1986 arcade game Hopping Mappy will be released in-game for free, with more DLC to follow.

We'll leave you with that PAC-MAN 99 Challenge livestream if you're interested in giving it a watch (bear in mind that it's a little over two hours long), but feel free to also let us know if you've been playing much PAC-MAN 99 in the comments.

This one hasn't really grabbed me as much as Tetris 99 did, but I'm glad to see they're adding some free DLC now after it launched with so much paid stuff.
I keep meaning to pick up the single-player stuff for this, it's a great game.
That seems low given it is "free" with NSO. I believe last count was 26 million NSO subscribers. Then again, Tetris 99 was 2.8 back in April 2019. Service was smaller then, but again, "free" with NSO.
Eh, should still be fine either way.
Still waiting on a physical copy that includes the DLC and an NSO subscription.
The last time i played pac-man 99 it felt like less players were in matches.
I wish this game had a local wireless player mode like Tetris 99.
I will be honest, I forgot about Pac-Man 99. Probably because I never liked Pac-Man that much.
Sucks that Mario 35 was taken down.
Should of kept Super Mario Bros 35 instead.
1985's Super Mario Bros just had more going then the original Pacman... only one maze layout it's why alot of people prefer Ms.Pac-Man for having 4 different Maze Layouts.
I downloaded it early on and played about 2 games and I am done with it. How many of those 4 million played it as much as me?
I got about 10 games of Super Mario 35 and a couple of Tetris 99 games on my sister's Switch so I have form.
Yo, Mappy! I love Mappy. Got such an awesome theme. Also a really underrated arcade game. Can’t wait.
I just played a couple games. I am very bad at pac-man and the last thing I want to do, if I do want to play it, is to be punished by people who are better than me!
Cool. Surprisingly, it's actually a pretty solid game. Not a classic like Tetris 99, but still a really fun version of Pac-Man.
A fun game but I'd still like to see Mario 35 return.
I really enjoy Pac-Man 99, the strategy is way more different than you'd expect. Recently when I've been playing though, I've noticed that around a quarter to a half of the players are bots. I'm good enough at the game that I can live past all of them, but it makes it less of a challenge than before.
For me this is so much less fun than Mario 35, that it hurts....
Got bored pretty fast.
Eh, I stopped playing this a few matches in. It just didn't grab me as much as Super Mario Bros 35 (which I miss greatly; would rather keep that than Pac-Man 99) and Tetris 99 even, plus the "99" gameplay just didn't blend well with the Pac-Man gameplay, in my opinion.
Glad to see it going well with others, though.
@Lonemetwoid Played it just yesterday, your right.
It's a good game, just can't hold my attention like Super Mario 35 did, that was legitimately one of my favorite battle royales.
I play it every day while exercising. I'm about to crack the top 5000 worldwide leaderboard! (currently at #5089!)
@Snatcher Glad I’m not the only one who noticed it. I guess the retention for this 99 game might be dwindling.
@Lonemetwoid I noticed this as well. I was thinking about geting Pac-man Champion Edition for a Pac man game with a little more substance
Being the game that "replaced" Mario 35. Pacman 99 will always be the stepdad
Never cared for Pacman much..really sucks that I got my switch a few days before they closed Mario 35 for their strange braindead reason.
@Lonemetwoid I've only played the game a handful of times and not one time have I played a game of Pac-Man 99 that had more than 80 players at most.
This theme is terrible, lol... How about a Tekken or Ridge Racer theme? I hate how Namco ignores it's late 90s arcade games all the time!
Not gonna lie, I forgot this game existed.
If only we could play as the ghost before we got disconnected, that would be nice, playing as just Pac-Man was kinda boring.
I don't see Pac-Man 99 being as evergreen as Tetris 99. I mean it will get support but I feel like Pac-Man doesn't fit into the mold that Tetris did. That being said, if they could make a Dr Mario 99 (Since the developers of both 99 games and SMB 35 made the Dr Mario games since the Wii days...)
