Re: Hands On: Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild VR Made Us Want To Puke

SmaMan

Why oh why did they decide to keep the 3rd person cam on this? It seems to be the stem of all the problems this is having. Not to mention, I'm playing Link's adventure, so I'd want to see it through his eyes. Not the eyes of a fly that's frantically buzzing around his vicinity.

I'll add that I'm not someone who gets motion sickness very often. I've played VR (only in first person) and it's worked fine for me.

Re: Mortal Kombat 11 Will Have A $100 Premium Edition On Switch

SmaMan

@Silly_G
You're right about game card trickery (got the Asian version of FFX on pre-order, btw.) But this is a day-one downloadable patch that, presumably, they aren't going to (or can't) include on the card. This means, you're on the hook for all 44GB (presumably) of that patch you'll have to download.

So, aside from paying $100 for the "special" edition of this game, Warner Bros. wants you to pay an additional $10~$20 for extra storage to hold their bloody bloated fighting game.

@kobalt
And according to another article, the Day-One Patch is going to be double the size of the base game.

At $100, WB better give us a nice, MK branded 64gb SD card since that's what you'll need to hold this ridiculous amount of game data... even if you go physical ffs.

Re: So Long Wii Shop Channel, And Thanks For All The Games

SmaMan

It started when I broke my foot on Christmas Day in 2006. I bought ToeJam & Earl and SimCity with my very first Wii Points card. Thank goodness the controllers were wireless out of the box now!

I loved it. Sure it was a slow, agonizing trickle of content sometimes, but after taking my first teenage job, this was fairly regularly where some of my paycheck went. These were some of the first purchases I made with "disposable income." It was the perfect way to dip my toes into the waters of the past, and what turned me into the retro gamer I am today.

I closed out that account last week at a zero balance getting Space Harrier and one of the Art.Style games, as I backed up all 115 of those games to an SD Card, backed that up to my computer, and backed that up to an external drive.

So long, Wii Shop Channel. May your exclusives live on in some way for years to come.

@roboshort
Well, yes, but it's more a matter of keeping things in good graces with your previous employer, not burning the bridges as it were, not to mention your professional reputation.

Can't fault a guy for taking a better opportunity elsewhere. Still, I'm surprised there isn't more of a non-compete agreement in the games industry, as there is in say broadcast TV.

Re: Love The Sega Ages Range? Then 8Bitdo Has Made Your Dream Controller

SmaMan

@sdelfin
I'm talking about an early model 1 unit here. It seems I can never quite get a secure fit inside the port, and certain controllers will have either certain buttons reading wrong (like A pressing B or up pressing start) or nothing at all.

It could just be those controllers dying out, as I've had some newer, aftermarket 6-button controllers work just fine, but they do still slide out of the console fairly easily.

Re: Sega AGES Development Team Might Localise Games That Have Never Been Translated

SmaMan

"The Sega AGES line might seem like it is made up of quick and simple ports based on the classics of yesteryear..."

Uh, no it's not. Who ever thought this? The incredible amount of care and polish they put into each release is evident from the moment you hit the main menu! They add things only when they enhance the game play, and give you the option to turn it off for the purist experience. As retro "emulation" (which I use in the loosest terms since many times they're rebuilding them from the ground up) collections are concerned, M2's are best ones out there.

Are you sure you didn't get these confused with the Genesis Collection we also got on Switch for some reason?

Re: Talking Point: Amazon's Efforts To Tempt Gamers Show Why We Need Dedicated Games Consoles

SmaMan

I've got YouTube on about every device in my house. I use it on Switch, sure, but if it had never come out on it, I wouldn't have missed it.

Meanwhile, set-top boxes like Roku and Amazon are definitely not about games. While it's better than a phone, trying to play Tetris on a remote is impossible.

That said, it's very easy to turn an Amazon Fire into a great emulation station, especially if you've already done so on an Android device. They very sneakily left off an external slot slot with their new ones, but it's very very easy to get around that.

Re: Reminder: Three New NES Games Have Launched On Switch Today, Plus Another Bonus SP Version

SmaMan

@BionicDodo
I also remember, all throughout the Virtual Console on Wii U era, people were complaining about having to pay so much for individual titles. In fact, some said they wanted a "Netflix-style approach" to it. Now we have that, and people want the Virtual Console approach. (Granted, a slow trickle plagued both models.)

People just want to complain, and Nintendo's been an easy target for the bile.

Re: Strategy Guide Publisher Prima Games Is Shutting Down After 28 Years

SmaMan

It's sad. Their guides helped me through Zelda OOT back in the day when I was 9 and big games like that scared me.

But that was "back in the day" now you only need hit Google to find a bevy of text and video based guides. It's growing anachronistic in this day and age.

And when they tried to start sweetening the deal with physical goodies... we all know how that turned out. Ain't that right, Prima Estus Flask?
