Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! have been out in the wild for just over two months now, giving us yet another excuse to explore the magical world of Kanto and catch 'em all. Of course, being one of the Switch's biggest games (or two biggest, we guess), these new Pokémon adventures are still being treated to advertising campaigns and new trailers, one of which features someone very famous indeed.
That's right, in a move that's actually very unusual for the Pokémon franchise, anime hero Ash Ketchum has been drafted in to promote the games. Speaking directly to viewers, Ash tells us how cool it is that we now have a Pikachu like him (to be fair, he's absolutely spot on), before explaining how our bond with our Pokémon will get stronger as we journey with them.
We don't usually see the games and anime collide in quite the same way, although the Pokémon: Let's Go games arguably lend themselves to this type of marketing more than most in the series. Despite his fame, the character of Ash has never been used as the protagonist of a core series game, instead being created specifically for the anime by Ken Sugimori and Atsuko Nishida.
Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! are available on Switch now, with another main series entry expected to arrive later this year.
Would you like to see Ash star in a main series game? Are you a fan of both the games and the anime? Let us know in the comments.

If you want to make a Pokemon fan cringe, just point at Pokemon Trainer on Smash Bros, or the Let's Go payable character, and say "look, it's Ash!".
@Delibheel I wouldn't cringe. For someone who's a casual fan of the series, its easy to make that mistake or association. My 5 year old calls the Pokemon Trainer in Smash Ash.
Wouldn't this be the sports equivalent of the lowest ranked tennis player or golfer endorsing your product?
Funny, because in-universe, Ash, having never won any championships or even staying with the same team for very long, would probably not be able to draw much cash as some kind of "celebrity endorsement."
Ash is based on the Red trainer, specifically his first design that also appears in the Letsgo games.
Letsgo is based on Yellow which had more influences from the anime. So you could say the Letsgo trainer is lightly based on Ash. Quite confusing if you dont know.
@Sanangelo89
It's entirely logical.
Heck, the rival's name in Let's Go is "Trace".
Tadaaa....!
Am I counted too as Ash Ketchum ? 😁
I would love a main pokemon game based on ash ketchum.
Mistaking Red or Chase for Ash is not cringeworthy at all.
Kids need little recognizable features of a character to make it stand out as something they know, otherwise all those different looking Santa's each year would've been unmasked pretty easily.
And besides, Ash and Garry were one of the default naming options in the original game.
@The-Chosen-one And to be more realistic the player can't reach number one. More like the top 16. But never 1.
@The-Chosen-one
Where you always lose gym fights, but people take pity on you because you seem a little dimwitted, so you get your badges anyway.
Terrible. Just terrible.
I knew a kid who mistook Black from the Adventures manga for Ash.
This ad has been played on TV before the game was launched. In France anyway.
@Pod
hahahahha man that would be funny
@Delibheel Both Ash. lol
@Delibheel well, the pokemon trainers default names in red/blue version was red, ash & jack so its kind of a case of being right for the wrong reason. the name ash was put in as a default name because its the name of pokemons creator, sAtoSHi tajiri
Okay this ad made me want to break down and actually buy the dumb game. I hate that I’m a sucker for nostalgia and what does this say about me that I care more about anime Ash than the actual Gen 1 experience... lol
@Delibheel We all thought it was Ash who you were playing against in Red/Blue/Yellow.
That is not the voice I remember...
Why now? 2 months after launch? Would have made more sense to do this earlier.
I already played through and caught them all, again. There is really nothing to do after that. Multiplayer in this game is terrible. Tiny
time limits, stealth rock but no hazard removal, no way to directly play against specific friends...
The single player is a fine "first Pokemon game" for kids though. And I like that you can connect with Pokemon Go. But they really could have done more with that. I hope that if the feature returns when the new games release this year, that they really expand on that functionality.
Ash Ketchum? Eh... I'd rather they had gone with the hot voice actress who plays him.
Classic Ash voice is the best
That is pretty smart marketing tbh. A tad late, but smart nonetheless.
Doesn’t sound like the Ash I grew up watching
Wasn't Ash in Pokemon Puzzle League for the Nintendo 64?
10-year-old me's brain just exploded...
Pokemon easily the most overrated and repetitive franchise in video gaming history.
Back with both red and especially Yellow I would name the character Ash as that little 8bit jumble of pixels reminded me of him. And in the case of yellow since they tied it straight to season 1 of the anime right down to Jessie and James I totally named him Ash and put Gary there for the rival. Did the same once more with FireRed GBA as well.
I still think I'd like to get this game on Switch (pika version) and I bet I'd use the name there as well even if it doesn't look like Ash exactly anyway.
I'm a Pikachu fan but also Gary's so i want to see Gary to promote Eevee
