I liked the older sonic games better then the newer ones, I might buy this
I.... already own all these! haha
Well, I own Sonic through the Classics collection
Word of warning, Sega Mega Drive Classics has some real bad input delay. Real bad.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iy5oZXHTF2w
But the SEGA AGES releases do not, they're developed by M2 and are some of the most polished retro releases you will find.
This release of Sonic the Hedgehog even goes a step further and adds in the Drop Dash from Sonic Mania, how cool is that?
@RupeeClock I definitely could tell that there was some imput lag but I don't know if I'd personally call it "real bad". I was able to get through Landstalker which requires pretty precise movements without too much trouble (thought not without any at all)
@boatie
Personally the delay made since a simple game of Sonic the Hedgehog feel like it was on constant ice physics. I couldn't even manage basic jumps sometimes because the finer control needed mid-air to land on a small platform was not there.
Good luck on the sonic ring chain challenge 5000 rings takes ages to master
Sega Ages = perfect emulation
Sega Mega Drive Classics = mediocre emulation
As simple as that.
@RupeeClock Huh. I've been hearing people talk about the input lag on Classics, but I haven't experienced it at all. Not saying it isn't existing for others—maybe I'm just too dense to notice, haha. But it hasn't impacted my enjoyment of the games at all.
Positive there's input lag in Spinball.
Outrun for less than a fiver......what a time to be alive!
@PapaPedro We're not all equal in front of this problem.
People with a good sense of visual attention notice input lag immediatly and they just can't get used to it.
Others don't notice it, don't care, but it really affect the pleasure to play on an unconscious level. Even to them.
So if you don't notice input lag, just trust the people who notice it.
It's reaaaally important to ENJOY a game.
Even for you.
I will finally pick up Phantasy Star now! I’ve always wanted to play the series and I heard the quality of life improvements on the AGES release make it much more pleasant.
I know the Collection technically has much better value but honestly the emulation is poor, input lag is everywhere (Sonic The Hedgehog is borderline unplayable) and the scanline filter is atrocious, stick to the Sega Ages titles which treat the games with the respect they deserve!
@PapaPedro Not everyone is equally sensitive to input lag, just as not everyone notices a somewhat unstable framerate in a game. If it doesn't bother you, then it shouldn't negatively impact your experience with the collection.
I already own Sonic and Outrun on 3DS. I'll likely pickup up Thunder Force and Phantasy Star even if I'm not a fan of shmups and RPGs respectively, but I'm always down for supporting M2 (developer). These ports are crafted with so much care and attention it actually trump's real hardware imo.
Why were two games omitted from the classics?
I adore OUTRUN. If you enjoy racing games it's a must. It's easy to play but contains more depth and challenge than it looks. Well worth the 💶💷💸 cost of entry.
I absolutely loved the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive Classics collection, and I say this as someone who has zero nostalgia for classic Sega games (aside from classic Sonic). Streets of Rage 2 is an amazing action game, Phantasy Star 4 is truly one of the best 16-bit RPG's, Shining Force 2 is a fantastic strategic experience, and of course the Sonic games are some of the finest platformers ever made (aside from 3D Blast, which is just...ugh). I did notice a little input lag with some of the games, but it was so marginal that it almost never impacted my experience. At its retail price it's already a steal, but on sale it's even more worth it.
I just want the Streets of Rage games. I want the Virtual Console back.
I just want to confirm that the D3T-developed Sega Mega Drive Classics have atrocious input lag.
A full second of delay after button presses render every action game on this collection useless.
So give this one a miss, unless you just want it for the turn-based stuff, like Phantasy Star and Shining Force.
Take the advice of others in this thread and only get the SEGA AGES releases. It's bad enough that SEGA is competing with themselves on this, but now it makes things all the more confusing to the average consumer.
@RupeeClock I constantly had to cheese the rewind feature for just this reason. Jumps were always poorly timed; and, as you said, the whole game felt like it was using ice physics.
Don’t forget America Sega! I’d like to grab the Genesis Collection! 👍
@BensonUii yeah, me too, don't want to pay £4.49 for them, but I'd quite like Phantasy Star and Thunder Force.
Buy Outrun! Best racing game.
@smashboy2000 That's being a bit pretentious, don't you think, to presume to know what other people experience unconsciously?
@joey302 America? What's that?
@RupeeClock Still waiting on Sonic 2. It's my personal favorite (admittedly purely for nostalgic reasons) and I'd love to play it with the Drop Dash!
I know NA has had these on sale before, but I don't think all at once (Could be wrong). Hopefully the "collective" sale happens here too. I haven't bit on Lightning Force or Phantasy Star yet, but I think I will go ahead when I see these on sale again. Outrun I already have (and enjoy) on 3DS, so I won't be double dipping.
@USWITCH64 not what it once was I can tell ya that! 🤨
@joey302 I still got love for the USA
"We do love a good sale". Yeah, but this isn't one!
@USWITCH64 without getting into this too deeply, my boy is Donald is trying REAL hard but we’re surrounded by too many ignorant blind folk far left wing Dems! 😌 Lol
@Ralizah Its ridiculous with the Sonic games.
A couple bucks off doesn't sound like that spectacular of a deal.
I hope these sales happen State-side. I'm eager to play some classic Sega games with my new M30 controller.
I was fortunate enough to get Outrun with the points I had acquired from Smash, so I got it for free, it made me very happy.
@RupeeClock Almost every game I tried had a really bad lag. Kid Chameleon, both Sonic games are unplayable. The lag is ridiculous
The Shinobi games are playable. I went to the end of Shadow Dancer, but that's an exception. I just can't recommend that collection. I don't know if I'm that boring, but for me it's impossible not to be bothered by such lag
The emulation on sega genesis classics is terrible. I clearly noticed shoddy sound and bad input delay. I got it for Christmas, I'm sure glad I didnt pay for it. It's like playing the genesis atgames system, just bad emulation. Do not buy.
@Gryzor @saturn_hero @RupeeClock
When was the last time everyone played the Sega Genesis Collection?
I finally played mine this week for the first time, and there was an update for it. I believe I checked for an update manually. Anyway, I haven't noticed any input lag at all.
@LinktotheFuture
Interesting, I'll take a look to see if this update fixes the input delay.
Edit: My physical EU region copy of Sega Mega Drive Classics was already on v1.02 with no update available, and it still had input delays equally as observable as the video I linked.
No idea if this is true for other versions, be them digital or other regions like Sega Genesis Classics.
@PapaPedro I know it can sound like that but that was not my point From the day I started playing (around 5 years old) from 24-26 years old, I was very sensitiv to such things as input lag, a lot more that the average person.
Then i went to depression and I didn't feel input lag anymore. I didn't care. Like I didn't care about nuances of black or gray (but it was part of my job) or I didn't care if I was around the good persons for me.
Well, depression.
At 35, 4 years ago, I started meditation. And all went back little by little, still today.
I had to change my TV because I couldn't stand anymore a high input lag 😂 Since a few weeks, I'm starting to struggle with 30fps games... I need more. And so much has change for me in four years.
And when you rediscover your feelings day after day, when your attention and sensitivity grows ever day, you start to better understand other people. Exemple : "OK this one is very sensitiv to input lag but can stand to live in a dirty appartment. This one on the other side has an appartment so clean I could eat on the floor, but he doesn't see input lag."
No judgment at all : people are what they are, with different takes on the world around them, different strenghts, different struggles or different easiness in life.
There's one reality but there's millions ways to see it (or maybe should I say "feel" it). And input lag is a part of it !
(of course there was no input lag before I was 24 because we were playing on CRT. : but the idea is there, I was very sensitiv to details no one cared about - and I thought I was the problem)
Give me Sonic 3 and Knuckes I’d give me death, Sega! Or Mania 2, Mania 2 is also acceptable.
