Re: Feature: Every Nintendo Console Ranked From Worst To Best

SleeplessKnight

@zool Not sure if it's a case of Nintendo "giving up on it" with the 3DS or just more the way the portable market has changed. It's pretty tough to sell parents on a dedicated handheld console these days with $30 -$40 games when they can get their kids an iPad (or android tablet) and load them up with a bunch of free and $1 games. Plus they're multipurpose devices - including educational purposes. Same thing really with Sony and the Vita compared to the PSP before it - even though I'd say Sony definitely abandoned the Vita far more so than Nintendo did the 3DS. But these days with modern "smart devices" like our phones and tablets, the concept of bringing along an extra dedicated handheld gaming device is just antiquated unfortunately. I personally HATE mobile gaming and subsequently touch-screen controls, but the writing has been on the wall for dedicated hand-held systems for 5 years or more now. The reason the Switch is bucking the trend and so successful thus far is the "gadget/neato factor" due to the hybrid home console/portable hybrid.

Re: Rumour: The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Is Taking To The Skies On Switch

SleeplessKnight

Obviously with the fact the Switch Joy-Cons allow for motion controls it's really a no-brainer why they'd remaster/re-release it on the Switch. However I think it would be great if they figured out a way to re-engineer the game to work with traditional controls as well - like have 2 control type options in the main menu. It would certainly make it more convenient and less awkward to play it on the go too.

Re: Nintendo's Recent Legal Action Against ROM-Sharing Sites Scares Major Player Into Removing Downloads

SleeplessKnight

This is a tough one, especially for Nintendo fans more so than other platforms. Reason? Nintendo's ONLY business is gaming. Sure they sell a lot of toys, merch and clothing etc, but without their gaming business, none of that would exist since it's all gaming-related. So I think most Nintendo fans can understand Nintendo protecting their legacy so-to-speak or taking piracy far more seriously than their competitors who also sell TV's, speakers, operating systems and overpriced office software to help bolster their bottom lines.

But...IF Nintendo cannot come up with a way for consumers to purchase and enjoy these classics legally, what else are people supposed to do? The retro gaming scene is HUGE these days and as such retro game cartridge/disc prices have gone up astronomically. It's getting rarer and rarer to go to some flee market or garage sale and actually find retro games for a fair price. Pretty much everyone's in on the gig now and there aren't nearly as many unknowledgeable sellers of this stuff out there anymore so retro game and console collecting, especially with eBay prices is just out of reach for most people's budgets.

Also, even IF Nintendo creates a new Virtual Console (which I know they've said they aren't), there's still issues with licensing with a LOT of old games making it almost impossible for some of them to ever see the light of day again...at least legally that is.

Re: Breath Of The Wild Has Been Added To The Zelda Series Timeline, But There's A Catch

SleeplessKnight

Honestly I've really never cared much about the supposed timeline of the Zelda series or how it's all interconnected or not. I'm also a huge fan of the Final Fantasy series and I guess I've always looked at Zelda kinda the same way (other than the FFXIII trilogy or FFX & X-2) that each game is in it's own bubble/timeline but just with a lot of the same people, places, things as the only real connecting elements.

Re: Review: Octopath Traveler (Switch)

SleeplessKnight

As someone who grew up with the 16-Bit JRPG's of lore, I've loved the 5 or 6 hours I've put into the demo of this game so far. The reviews are starting to roll in and it's averaging around an 85% or 8.5/10 which is great. I love the battle system, the "HD 2D" visuals, orchestrated score and even the voice acting which is surprisingly very good.

I just wish the character's stories intertwined more with each other and their interactions with each other were deeper. And of course, I would've liked to see a main villain/big, bad, evil boss or force the team has to defeat to save the world. Perhaps Squeenix will address this in potential DLC down the road? Either way, this is probably the closest thing I've played to a Super NES JRPG in years so I'm buying it tomorrow anyway.

Re: NPD Predicts Switch Will Be 2018's Best-Selling Console Despite PS4's Current Lead

SleeplessKnight

So...only 1 (NBA 2K19) of the predicted top 10 best sellers are even coming to the Switch yet it's going to be 2018's best selling console? I seriously doubt that! The Switch's sales pace has slowed down considerably from it's first 12 months on the market. The PS4 will have crazy deals this Holiday season with bundles, discounts on hardware and software, a full lineup of $20 greatest hits titles etc. Sorry, Switch will still finish in 2nd place. Just being honest here.

Re: WWE 2K19 Is Officially Skipping Nintendo Switch, 2K Games Confirms

SleeplessKnight

Sadly, as far as sports games (and "Sports Entertainment") go, this has been the trend since the end of the GameCube era...Either the current Nintendo console flat-out doesn't get a port of the sports title at all (cough..NHL 19..cough) or only sporadic releases (WWE 2K18, but no 2K19 and maybe it will have 2K20?)

This is why as much as I love Nintendo and my Switch, it will NEVER be my primary console because too much great stuff is just not available on it. I only mentioned sports games. I could go on forever about other games (Red Dead 2, Anthem, Fallout '76, AC: Odyssey, CoD Black Ops 4, and many others).

Re: Hands On: Taking The Path Less Traveled In Octopath Traveler

SleeplessKnight

Honestly as someone who grew up with the 8 and 16-Bit JRPG's from the "Golden Era" I could not be more excited for this game! And what a perfect-fit for the Switch as well! I can play this game anywhere which what was so cool about Game Boy JRPG's back in the day. Only difference is they were clearly dumbed-down experiences compared to the NES and SNES (and obviously not in color). The Switch has enough power to truly captivate on the go!

Growing up, we didn't call them "JRPGs" they were just "RPGs" because they were the predominant style and the best RPGs back in the day.

Re: Random: Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy Gets Praise For Its Minimalist Interior Box Artwork

SleeplessKnight

@NEStalgia you may be correct there. I wasn't really meaning it from a waste of resources/material angle, but more of an aesthetic or practical angle. Take for example cassette tape cases (for those who remember those lol), they're probably one of the best examples of only using exactly the amount of plastic/packaging they need. Switch game cases are pretty much the opposite.

Re: Reggie On The Status Of More Nintendo 3DS Games And Mario Kart Tour

SleeplessKnight

Obviously Mario Kart Tour will be the same as EVERY other game Nintendo have brought to mobile (Niantic made Pokemon Go) - a fun, pick up & play, dumbed-down, smaller-scale experience. Nintendo are using mobile as a way to attract consumers to their franchises and entice them to shell out for the FULL experiences of those titles on their home/portable consoles.

Re: Sony Blocks PS4 Fortnite Players From Using Their Account On Nintendo Switch

SleeplessKnight

I think part of this stems from Sony just being gun shy after the "Great PSN hack of 2011". They're very paranoid that by giving access to player's info or allowing some other device to communicate with their customer's PSN accounts, that somehow it'll come back to bite them. Also, it most definitely has a lot to do with Sony being in a position of power this generation and being a bit snobby. I personally don't play Fortnite but I know over 40 million people do and a lot of them are multi-console owners. So I think the right thing for Sony to do would just be to allow cross-platform support, but I doubt they will.

Re: Ubisoft CEO Believes The Next Generation Of Consoles Will Be The Last

SleeplessKnight

I currently have cable Internet at 150 mbps down & 15 mbps up and PS Now is barely functional on my PS4 Pro. Between the very slight lag already present with the wireless controller and the slight lag from streaming the games, there is a noticeable input lag between pressing the buttons and the action happening on screen compared to playing a game off the disc or hard drive.

Re: Video: Watch the Pokémon 2018 Video Game Press Conference Right Now

SleeplessKnight

Pretty exciting stuff here! Love the integration between Go and the Let's Go Switch games. Not sure if releasing 2 games simultaneously will work with a "home" console like they've gotten away with in the past from Game Boy up to 3DS, but we'll see I suppose. It's one thing that they were always "portable-priced" games so most people would buy both, but if they're now going to be full "console game" price only the hardcore will do that. Also nice they slipped in the fact they're also making a more traditional Pokemon RPG for the Switch in 2019 just to ease any doubts or negative backlash towards the Let's Go games. The Pokeball is kind of cool that it has an analog stick for navigation, a speaker of some sort, rumble, LED lighting etc. Again though only the real hardcore Pokemon fans will buy it.

Re: Limited Run Games Is Totally Down For A Physical Edition Of Yooka-Laylee

SleeplessKnight

Sigh...got tired of waiting for a physical copy of the Switch version so I have to admit I bought it the other day digitally on the PS4 because (A) I have a 4TB hard drive attached to my PS4 and (B) it went on sale for PS+ subscribers from $50 CDN down to $18 so I couldn't resist. IF there ever is a physical Switch release I may still snag it when after it drops in price a bit.

Re: No, Sega Is Not Returning To The Home Console Arena

SleeplessKnight

@BanjoPickles While you're technically correct in the sense that from a sheer sales perspective the Genesis was the one and only major success Sega ever had hardware-wise, there are still enough Sega fanboys around the world who loved the Saturn and Dreamcast as well as the Genesis for them to be successful again in the home console space. I could see Sega easily selling 30 million units, but in a 4-horse race (as it would be IF they were to climb back into the ring), that would make them last place (assuming the Switch keeps up it's current sales pace). So the likelihood they'll ever do it is slim to none though so it's really pointless to argue it. As for the value of their IPs while it's true that ONLY one of them (Sonic) has true, world-wide brand-recognition like Nintendo's Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Pokemon etc, I still think there's value in some of their long-dormant IP's if the right developer were to resurrect/modernize them.

Re: No, Sega Is Not Returning To The Home Console Arena

SleeplessKnight

Don't kid yourselves, IF Sega were to re-enter the console market there are MILLIONS of Sega fans from back in the day that would probably cry tears of joy and line up to buy one. Think about the strength of their IP - both current and lapsed/dormant IP. IF all of a sudden a new Sega system launched with ALL of that IP exclusive to the console and you couldn't play it anywhere else? Gold! Imagine resurrecting Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Phantasy Star, Shinobi, Ecco the Dolphin, Panzer Dragoon, and many more alongside Bayonetta, Yakuza, Sonic, Shenmue etc? Honestly it's a license to print money if only a multi-billion dollar corporation would buy them out and do it!

Re: Sounds Like Bandai Namco Really Is Working on Metroid Prime 4

SleeplessKnight

At first I was concerned that Retro were not developing the game. However in some cases the IP is so strong and so legendary that it really doesn't matter who's making the game as (1) They'll be very honored to work on it and also very scared for their studio's reputation if they mess it up and (2) Nintendo will be overseeing this game like a protective mother hen the entire development cycle so they simply won't allow them to release it until they stamp it with the Nintendo seal of quality so-to-speak.

Re: Even After 10 Years, Billy Mitchell Still Hasn't Seen King Of Kong

SleeplessKnight

Those Twin Galaxies guys all had a weird man-crush on Billy and gave off an almost cult-like vibe in the movie. It definitely seemed as if they were all rooting for Steve to fail, even the ones who faked being nice to his face. Love how Billy claims that he was in character in the movie - as if he's a REAL actor! LMFAO! What you see in the movie is the real deal. Sure some things were made up or embellished a bit, but that guy has the personality of a wet blanket whether he's being filmed or not.

Re: Nintendo Download: 8th February (North America)

SleeplessKnight

Wow it's unbelievable how many publishers are scrambling to bring their games to the Switch digitally! First it was the PS4 that was considered the place to go for Indie's on consoles but lately it seems like the Switch is not only getting them first but getting more of them!

Re: Feature: Here's What Was Announced During The January 2018 Nintendo Direct Mini

SleeplessKnight

@Mr_Pepperami Well you're correct in a "shoulda, woulda, coulda", revisionist history-type way, however the reality is that Nintendo - no mater who's at actual fault - just didn't make enough return on investment from the Wii U so now they're milking the cash cow of the Switch for all it's worth. Can't really blame them, but it does kinda suck for those of us who've already bought most of the 1st party Wii U exclusives to have to pay full price for them again on the Switch.

Re: Feature: Here's What Was Announced During The January 2018 Nintendo Direct Mini

SleeplessKnight

For those who don't like all the remakes or re-releases of Wii U games on the Switch because "I already own all of them on my Wii U" you have to look at it from Nintendo's perspective. The Wii U was a dud, sales-wise. However it had an awesome library of 1st and 2nd party exclusives...which, other than Mario Kart 8, hardly anyone bought. So they invested multi-millions into the development of those games to have them rot on shelves because no one had a Wii U. Fast forward to today, A LOT of Switch buyers are NEW to Nintendo or at least haven't owned a Nintendo console in a long time. To MOST of these people, games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Pokken Tournament, Hyrule Warriors and DKC Tropical Freeze are BRAND NEW to them. This is good for Nintendo in 2 ways. Firstly, they can finally recoup the development costs of these games and make some serious profits off them and secondly it helps them maintain a steady flow of AAA 1st and 2nd party titles year-round so there's no stagnation from a software drought on the Switch like there was with the Wii U.

Re: Nintendo Direct Mini Is Happening Right Now

SleeplessKnight

So 2 trends I see that are happening with the Switch and will continue to happen going forward. First, as I predicted EVERY 1st party Wii U game is either in the process or will eventually be ported to the Switch. Tropical Freeze and Hyrule Warriors being the latest examples. I'll bet Super Mario Maker and or Star Fox Zero are not to far behind. Secondly, more support from 3rd parties - even if it's ports of older games or remasters of games that were never on Nintendo platforms before. So no Call of Duty WWII, AC Origins or Star Wars BF II - so no currently-hot multiplatform games but after the Wii U's abysmal 3rd party software lineup I'll take it!
