Re: Poll: The Switch eShop is Hot, But Is It Time for an Overhaul of Its User Interface?

SleeplessKnight

I like the Switch interface. It's definitely the fastest of all the consoles as far as the snappiness of getting from one place to another. Now some would argue that's because it's so bare-bones and basic. As far as the eShop goes, it's still WAY faster than the "PS Snore" and the Xbox One user interface is so flaky and finicky.

I think Nintendo may overhaul the OS and/or eShop interfaces once apps such as Netflix, YouTube etc. and their online service launches, but I wouldn't hold my breath for anything prior to that. Some new themes besides plain white and black would be nice and very easy for them to implement soon though.

Re: Gallery: The North American SNES Classic Mini Is Boxy, But Good

SleeplessKnight

I always liked the PAL/Japanese SNES/Super Famicom better than ours here in North America. Mainly I liked the look of the controllers with the 4-colored buttons. But, that being said I grew up playing the NA version so it grew on me. I got mine this morning at my local small town Walmart. They only got 24 but I was first in line. Can't wait to play level 1 of Star Fox so I can unlock and finally play Star Fox 2!

Re: Mario Bros. to Kick Off 'Arcade Archives' Range on Nintendo Switch

SleeplessKnight

This announcement is to try at least partially satisfy the huge demand for VC on the Switch. It also strengthens my belief that VC on the Switch is going to be a service you pay for monthly - likely as part of the more expensive-level tier of their online service. They'll slowly trickle out groups of NES, SNES, N64 and hopefully GameCube games that you can download and play as long as you stay subscribed.

Re: Video: Digital Foundry Suggests That Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition Isn't So Definitive

SleeplessKnight

@Mart1ndo I think people care...to a point. And if you are a multi-console owner I see the value in comparing versions as like I've said I've done many times this generation. However where it can sour one's enjoyment is when you knowingly choose the version of the game that looks/runs marginally worse because maybe you wanted to play the MP with a buddy two. But because you watched the DF (or other) comparison video you know (or at least are thinking) in the back of your mind "I'm playing the second best version (on console) of this game".

Re: Video: Digital Foundry Suggests That Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition Isn't So Definitive

SleeplessKnight

@AlbertXi You make some great points here for sure. I do remember gaming mags like EGM comparing screenshots of Street Fighter II for the SNES vs. the arcade, showing differences such as in Dhalsim's stage where the SNES version was missing the middle elephants on each side of the screen. And yes there was certainly a lot of pounding on their chests from Nintendo regarding the technical achievements of Donkey Kong Country.

So really DF is just a more modern version of videogame mags doing this, just with more sophisticated technology now to break things down into finer details. I guess for me I've just watched so many of these comparisons and come away going "I don't really see a discernible difference?" But I guess what bugs be most is that people will throw DF's results in the face of fans of whichever platform they don't like or support and act like it's the be all, end all and that their version of the game is absolute trash - which isn't the case at all. As a multi-console owner I get why you'd want to compare both before purchasing one. However I also think that more goes into it than graphics and framerate/performance. For me I choose the Xbox One version of quite a few multiplatform games simply because more of my real-life friends play games online on Xbox. So I've played many games this generation which are marginally better on the PS4 (according to DF) on XB1 instead and have still had a great time doing so. I guess I'm just saying that things are so much more heavily scrutinized, analyzed and critiqued these days, (and that goes for TV, movies and music as well), that if you buy into too much of the negative aspects of these forms of entertainment, it can lead to a less enjoyable experience.

Re: Video: Digital Foundry Suggests That Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition Isn't So Definitive

SleeplessKnight

@MsJubilee I suppose it's because I've fallen into it. It became like an addiction to compare games on different systems rather than just playing them and having fun. It became addicting to argue with PC gamers on the merrits of consoles on forums such as this one.

If I compare the 16-Bit era to today, we used to argue over which was better the Super NES or Genesis, but it was in person with real-life friends on the playground or bus. We got our gaming news from magazines like Nintendo Power, EGM and GamePro. It wasn't as overly-critical, overly-analytical or toxic as online forums are today.

Re: Video: Digital Foundry Suggests That Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition Isn't So Definitive

SleeplessKnight

@Mart1ndo Do yourself a favor and stop guessing, you're bad at it. No I'm a PS3, PS4, X360, XB1, Wii U, Switch, 3DS and Vita owner. Plus numerous retro consoles. I've been gaming since the Atari 2600 all the way to today. In this generation more so than ever my personal enjoyment of this hobby has been soured due to the pointless console war and the PC Masterbates Race. I myself have played numerous games on PS4 and XB1 trying to compare them and notice the slightest difference, most times not finding any. I've watched comparisons on IGN, YouTube and Digital Foundry. Not too long ago I made a personal choice NOT to view this material anymore and I've been enjoying my gaming experience a lot more and wish I would've stopped it sooner.

Re: Video: Digital Foundry Suggests That Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition Isn't So Definitive

SleeplessKnight

Digital Foundry is part of what's wrong with today's gaming society. Over-analyzing things down to minute details that most people wouldn't ever notice, nor give a crap about unless they read and or watch some comparison video or analysis of a game.

For example, most people could give two $hits that the PS4 version of a game has ever so slightly sharper shadows or slightly more ground foliage than the XB1 version AND wouldn't even notice if not for someone like Digital Foundry pointing it out to them. Hell most of my favorite games of all-time have some sort of slowdown or frame drops at times and yeah sure I guess it isn't ideal, but it's not the end of the world either.

I've found, at least for me personally, you're better off to just buy games on whatever platform of your choosing and ignore comparison videos or places like Digital Foundry - you'll have a lot more fun! Yes FUN the whole original purpose of playing videogames...

Re: Video: '90s Interview With Miyamoto Reveals What He Thinks Makes His Games So Special

SleeplessKnight

He's THE MAN! The Spielberg of the gaming industry. And I think Steven Spielberg even said once when referring to himself that it's more like he's the Shigeru Miyamoto of the movie industry! Quite high praise! I'm 40 and even though I also game on PS4 and Xbox One, I love my Switch the most and I'm still a bigger fan of Nintendo and their franchises than everything else out there. Uncharted and Halo are right up there too, but Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Donkey Kong and Star Fox are still a few notches higher to me.

Re: Feature: Exploring The "Switch Tax" And Why Nintendo Was Right to Use Game Cards

SleeplessKnight

I'm not too worried about paying $10 more for a multiplatform game on the Switch as the portability factor alone more than covers it IMO. Also flash memory will only continue to go up in capacity/size and down in price as time goes on so, if anything by the time developers have to start seriously considering using the 64GB cards, it won't be as big of an issue as it is at present.

SleeplessKnight

Alex, if you want a proper Nintendo magazine and Ryno if you were a huge fan of Nintendo Power, you're in luck!

http://www.nintendoforcemagazine.com/

Nintendo Force is a crowd-funded bimonthly magazine made by a bunch of former editors from various Nintendo sites and publications. Basically it's the spiritual successor to Nintendo Power - they even have a section every issue looking back on what Nintendo power was covering in those same 2 months years and years ago. It's awesome!

Re: Digital Foundry Comes Away Very Impressed With Skyrim On Switch

SleeplessKnight

It's funny. I've owned Skyrim on PS3 and 360 and more recently on PS4. One of the biggest reasons I've never even come close to finishing it (besides the fact the game was just flat-out broken on PS3) is time. I simply don't have the time it takes to sit on my couch and log 100 or more hours into the game. And while the Switch version falls somewhere in-between the PS3/360 versions and PS4/XB1 visually, what appeals to me so much about the Switch version is now I can play it anywhere, anytime! So that means in bed, or on the couch while the hockey or baseball game is on in the background (where normally on other systems I can't play games while watching sports), in the hotel room or even on the [removed] if I'm so inclined lol! I'm seriously considering buying the game yet again...

All the talk of "Native 4K" this and "Checkerboard 4K" that, 30fps vs. 60 fps, "PC Master Race" crap, PS4 Pro vs. Xbox One X and so on and a little cartridge game for the Switch takes home more awards than ANY other title on any of those other "Moar Powerrrrrrrrrrrful" platforms. And you can play it on the [removed] too!

Re: Ubisoft's Live Action Commercials For Mario + Rabbids Are Rather Weird

SleeplessKnight

Great commercials! Especially considering it's tough to market games in this genre as a lot of people find them a bit boring. I'll be buying this game because I'm a sucker and buy pretty much EVERY game with Nintendo's characters in it, plus the fact this is a unique collaboration between Ubisoft and Nintendo. But mainly because it looks pretty good, especially to play while lying in bed at night!

Re: Nintendo Switch and Splatoon 2 Led US Retail Sales in July

SleeplessKnight

As I've repeatedly stated to other trolls on other gaming forums, the Switch will sell as many units as Nintendo can produce. No surprise that the month they were able to increase the supply to the channel they outsold the PS4. This would be a consistent occurrence going forward if they can keep production up.

Re: Hey! Pikmin Shows Nintendo Still Has A Soft Spot For Rare

SleeplessKnight

@NEStalgia I'm by no means implying Nintendo should pay top dollar for Rare or for their old IP's. I'm merely stating that for fans of those franchises and characters who are hoping to see future installments or guest appearances by those characters in ( in Smash, Mario Kart etc.), it would be better if Nintendo were the stewards of those properties than Micro$haft. And even though you're correct that some of those IP's are stale now, like I said before, they're mostly stale due to Microsoft's mishandling of Rare since they purchased them. If Nintendo threw some time, love and marketing $$ behind them, I'm pretty confident they could make those IP's valuable again. And once more, it can't be overstated enough - Rare's games just simply FIT more on Nintendo platforms with Nintendo audiences than they ever have or ever will on Xbox.

Re: Hey! Pikmin Shows Nintendo Still Has A Soft Spot For Rare

SleeplessKnight

@NEStalgia Why buy Rare back? Great question. I suppose it depends on what Rare still owns and what Microsoft now owns. Regardless of whether or not the old dev teams are still with Rare or not, it's the actual IP that Nintendo would be buying more than anything. Nintendo would take those formerly-valuable franchises and resurrect them with our without the Rare name attached. And more importantly to an audience that has some history and appreciation for those franchises.

Re: Update For Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition Enables 1080p Display When Docked

SleeplessKnight

Good stuff. It's no secret that Microsoft loves Nintendo. Major Nelson isn't shy about admitting he has a Switch and that he plays it all the time on the plane, in the cab, on the train etc. Also, Microsoft did offer to buy Nintendo back just before the GameCube launched. They're both located in Redmond/Seattle WA, in fact there are Microsoft buildings across the street from Nintendo's main North American HQ. If the Xbox One X fails, I'm not so certain if Micro$oft will continue making dedicated videogame hardware. You can sort of already see the trend of them turning 'Xbox' more into a brand or service than an actual physical box with their Xbox Play Anywhere mantra where EVERY Xbox One console exclusive also comes to Windows 10 PC's. They may end up offering Nintendo a huge chunk of change to port their games over to PC under the Xbox brand within the next decade or so OR even offer to buy Nintendo again.

Re: Trademark Application Has Fans Dreaming of the Nintendo 64 Classic Mini

SleeplessKnight

Only thing about this (and I think it's probably inevitable the N64 Classic is coming) is if the NES Classic had 30 games, the SNES Classic has 20 (+1 bonus game in Star Fox 2) what will the N64 Classic have? 10 games? So which 10 N64 games would they choose? We can all easily rattle off our top 10 favorite N64 games but only problem is a lot of them are Rare games which are now owned by Microsoft. Unlike Donkey Kong Country which is a Nintendo-owned IP made by Rare, Banjo-Kazooie, Perfect Dark, Killer Instinct, Jet Force Gemini, Conker, and others were Rare-owned, thus now Microsoft-owned. And GoldenEye, well that's a whole other can of worms with Activision now owning all the rights to Bond games - which is why it's not even on the Rare Replay game for the Xbox One.

Then when it comes to other properties such as Star Wars, WWE wrestling games etc, it's also messy getting around all the licensing issues so I'd bet none of them will be included either.

So assuming all those games are off limits, this would be my top 10:

1) Super Mario 64
2) Zelda: Ocarina of Time
3) Zelda: Majora's Mask
4) Mario Kart 64
5) Donkey Kong 64
6) Star Fox 64
7) Wave Race 64
8) Pilotwings 64
9) 1080 Snowboarding
10) F-Zero X

Re: Feature: Ex-Rare Composer Grant Kirkhope On "Breaking Mario" And Following In Koji Kondo's Footsteps

SleeplessKnight

This is what the Switch needs. Original exclusive collaborations with a 3rd party developers. Nintendo should reach out to Konami, Capcom and others and resurrect franchises such as Mega Man, Contra and more. Not all necessarily mashups with Nintendo characters, but more co-developed/co-funded to help flesh out the Switch library. They could call the games "Nintendo Heritage Series" or something to that effect. Game franchises that were born on Nintendo brought back out of dormancy for the Switch.

Re: Guide: A Nintendo Fan's Breakdown of E3 2017's Press Conferences and Events

SleeplessKnight

@Priceless_Spork Well sort of. Let's take the new God of War for example. I go long stretches of time where I'm not thinking about it, then every once in a while I read an article or see a new PlayStation ad with Kratos in it and I'm like "Oh yeah the new God of War! That game looks awesome, wonder when it's coming out?" And I will admit there is a bit of frustration mixed in with anticipation for sure.

Re: Guide: A Nintendo Fan's Breakdown of E3 2017's Press Conferences and Events

SleeplessKnight

Micro$oft's conference will be all about convincing current Xbox gamers and gamers who've left the Xbox brand to buy another $500 US (guessing) box that plays games slightly sharper, but you need a more expensive new TV to really take full advantage of. The BIGGEST thing with them will be what exclusive games can they announce to convince the majority who aren't die-hard Xbox fanboys to buy one?

$ony will focus probably 30% on PSVR stuff, 60% on PS4 exclusives, 10% bragging about sales numbers and 0% on Vita.

Nintendo will focus heavily on Mario Odyssey, and may even shed more light on their online plans and network/community for the Switch. 3DS will get some attention too, but it'll be more back burner. I doubt they'll really touch much on mobile stuff either. All I'm hoping for is a new Metroid reveal/announcement for the Switch!

Can't wait! E3 is always like Christmas in June for me!

Re: Nintendo is Still Targeting Switch Sales to Match the Wii

SleeplessKnight

I'm doubtful the Switch will reach Wii-level sales, but if it does then that's awesome! I do think it'll sell at least 50 million units which would still be a big win for Nintendo anyway! Thing is, the Switch will only sell so far on the gimick or the hook of being a hybrid home and portable console. It'll also only sell so many units to diehard Wii fans who like using the Joy-Cons like the Wiimote and Nunchuck (see ARMS). For the majority it's the games that matter. Hopefully Nintendo has a few big announcements at E3 in June to keep the positive momentum rolling.

Re: Guide: How To Catch The Best Mount In Zelda: Breath Of The Wild

SleeplessKnight

This game is just so epic with all the little touches like this! It brings me back to the good old NES and SNES days. Just talking with friends about the game and asking stuff like "Hey did you ever catch and ride the Lord of the Mountain?" Or "Hey did you know you can use metal weapons as conduits for electricity in shrine puzzles?" I mean everyone's experiences in the game are slightly different because of the go anywhere, do anything in any order nature of the game. Just like the very first Zelda this is the kind of game that people will still be playing a decade from now as I think this may go down as the most legendary edition of The Legend of Zelda ever!

Re: Round Up: Yooka-Laylee's Scores Are In, And Critics Appear Divided

SleeplessKnight

@Phin68
I agree with you on the camera issues and to some extent framerate drops. However those 2 things are NOT the main reasons most reviewers are giving the game low scores. They're citing things such as too big of worlds, too many NPC's to talk to, goofy voices, campy British humor and too many things to collect - as if they went into their review expecting something different?!

Re: Round Up: Yooka-Laylee's Scores Are In, And Critics Appear Divided

SleeplessKnight

I think to review this game objectively and where a lot of the review media have totally missed the boat on, you have to be able to transport yourself back in time to the early 2000's and pretend that Yooka-Laylee is the 3rd Banjo-Kazooie. Sure graphically it blows the first 2 Banjo games away, but in terms of game play, level layout/design, goofy voices, it was PURPOSEFULLY DESIGNED to feel like an old game. Playtonic has stressed this from the very beginning! If you don't like 3D platformer/collectathon's this game is NOT FOR YOU and therefore YOU should not be the member of your staff to review it PERIOD! I tend to believe the 7's and 8's much more so than a guy like Jim Sterling giving it a 2. I didn't back it, but I'm still going to buy it and enjoy it because I actually DO like these kinds of games.
