Re: Review: Happy Birthdays (Switch)

SilentS

When my daughter found a video playthrough on this game for the PS4 version months ago, she had been non stop asking me for it. When I got the demo for the Switch last week, she played a few hours and then that was it, went back to Dragon Quest Builders. Loves the concept for it, but doesn't understand the controls, yet. So I will more than likely be picking this up at some point. If it wasn't for the fact that the game goes live tomorrow, I probably would have picked it up already for her, but now I have an excuse to save my money for the time being.

Re: Soapbox: Let's Give Nintendo Switch Online A Chance Before We Throw It To The Wolves

SilentS

@BanjoPickles offering their "rental" games and buying digitally are two different things. If you paid money to buy a game, then it is yours even after the service gets shut down. If you get the rental game because you are subscribed to their online service, then of course you would lose it when the service goes down or when you stop your subscription. It is the same with the XBLive and PSN. Even with the Switch, if you bought a game, it stays with you even if the licenses are pulled, that just means it wont be for sale anymore. Rental games (aka "free" games from a paid service) are not yours to keep, and are subject to be lost at any time depending on circumstances.

Re: Soapbox: Let's Give Nintendo Switch Online A Chance Before We Throw It To The Wolves

SilentS

Praise, gripe, make excuses for or against.... In the end none of that matters. What does is what is being offered, and would you use it at all. Personally I won't be getting it. Sure it is cheap, but I simply do not play games online on any console system. The NES games do not interest me either because I can play them already on either the NES Mini, on the Retron 5 from the original carts that I still own, or on the Wii/WiiU VC (daughter still plays those systems so they remain setup).

Until such a time comes that the service offers something that actually makes itself worth while to me, it would just be a waste to bother with it. It is the same way with the PSN and XBLive. Sure those offer more current games for their "rental service", but I have found that more often than not, they are not games that I have any interest in. But if they do, they are often on sale anyways, or are old enough where I can find in the bargain bin at the store cheaper than what it is digitally.

Re: Video: Ever Wondered Why Joysticks Are Always On The Left?

SilentS

Even with the arcade games that had the buttons on both sides of the stick, I always ended up using the stick with the left, and buttons on the right as a kid. Just felt more natural. True that being right handed it probably was more reasonable to use that for movements, it just felt more natural because of the quick reflexes needed to use the buttons in some games.

Re: Octopath Traveler Receives Release Date And Special Edition On Nintendo Switch

SilentS

Only two wishes I have for this... Enough stock so that I can actually get a copy of the Special Edition, and I hope that retailers can do the preorders. It would suck if it was through the Square website only because of their outrageous shipping prices and bad shipping times (had an order take just over 2 months for an "express shipping" option).

Re: Switch Is A "Fantastic Platform" For Indie Developers, Says Curve Digital

SilentS

This again.... This topic is a drawn out one that keeps pumping out the same arguments for and against it every time it comes up. So, here's my worthless two cents.

Indie's ARE 3rd party developers. The difference between them and the big names are basically the income they have and can put towards their titles, and the willingness to try something new. Indie's, while lacking funding for the most part, are willing to try new ideas most of the time. The big names are more unwilling to do so since they seem to believe it would cost too much vs potential revenue to establish new ideas. Not to mention it is cheaper for them to just pump out the same type of games all the time, just slightly updating them each time.

I compare this scenario to how the stereotypical "Elderly vs Younger generation" is viewed by some.... The big names are the Elderly for being dead set in their ways, refusing to change and/or try anything new. The Younger Generation are the Indie's, while trying the old ways, they are more apt to branch out and try something new.

Re: Metacritic Ranks Nintendo Second In Its 2017 Game Publisher Rankings

SilentS

This is a head scratcher for me.... How did Bethesda get #1 when virtually everything they touch/release is riddled in bugs? I have yet to play something from them that has not been a glitch-fest in some way.

As for Metacritic, I have to agree that people put too much stock/faith into it. I have seen great games get lower reviews while crappier ones get higher marks. Not to mention the fact there have always been reports of some companies paying to put out "raving reviews" for their games just to raise the score. It is a crappy system that select groups of people put too much faith into to decide if a game is good or not. These groups are unable to think for themselves to form their own opinions as far as I am concerned.

ONLY credit I will give Bethesda is that they have a player base across multiple systems while Nintendo has only their own consoles to play on.

Re: Soapbox: What Happened To All The Great Baseball Games On Nintendo Consoles?

SilentS

What happened to all the great baseball games on Nintendo consoles gone???? More like what happened to all the great baseball games in general. They are few and fare in between on any system as a whole. The whole authentic and realism games are a huge turnoff. Long gone are the fun games like Base Wars, Baseball Simulator 1.000, and the Mutant League series (too bad they only had football and hockey back then. I don't count the new one that released recently since it doesn't have that classic feel to me). Now what we get, which basically plagues all sports games, are the bare bones "realism". In most cases those said games are slow and sluggish when played at best.

Sadly I see little hope in ever seeing "fun" games for sports being made anymore. Such a missed opportunity to add new elements to a stagnant genre.

Re: Soapbox: The Super Mario Movie Might Not Be All That Great

SilentS

Just going to be blunt here... But it is rather pathetic to start complaining about an idea that has zero information about it released. Not to mention that most times it is hard to use a studios past work (in general) as a reference because there are usually a mix of both good and bad movies. But in this case Nintendo will most likely have to approve whatever is done beforehand. This was not the case in the first Mario movie, that the execs up the ladder butchered.

Sure, you can have concerns, but until such a time as when actual concrete information is released about it, it is all nothing but speculation and/or fear mongering. Just because ~YOU~ did not like Illumination's past projects, does not mean nobody else did either.

It may be difficult for some people, but try showing some patience and restraint. Actually try waiting for details to come out before claiming this is going to be good or bad.

Re: Treasure's Masato Maegawa Wants Sega To Make A Mega Drive Mini

SilentS

While it is neat to have these old systems, what I would prefer though is that some of these companies put their entire old catalogs on a single Switch cart and sell it that way. No need to hunt down the mini systems anymore, just buy the games and play on the go with the Switch. I would pay a bit extra if it meant having most, if not all, of their old retro games on a single cart (have to admit, they wont need much space, so the carts would be cheap on the production end).

Re: Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts Gets the MSU1 Digital Audio Enhancement Treatment

SilentS

@NintendoRob1977 Yes it is real. It was even in the original Nintendo Power magazines back in the day. It was a pain to get used to doing it properly, but once you do, it is rather easy to do. But keep in mind, it only works for the "first half" of the game. Meaning if you jump right to the last stage and beat that boss, you still need to restart and play through the full game to find the special item and beat the boss again to get the true ending.

On a side note, for those long forgotten "cheats and codes", there are many of them on the GameFAQs site.

Re: Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts Gets the MSU1 Digital Audio Enhancement Treatment

SilentS

@NintendoRob1977 Built into the game there is a level select code. Don't need the Game Genie to skip levels.

At the title screen do the following:

Hold down Right, pres B 3x then press Up, and release it. Press B 3 more times. Press Left, then release and press B 3 more times. Press Down, release, then press B 3 more times. Finally press Start

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Switch and Third-Parties - Let's Be Realistic

SilentS

Talk about being pessimistic. It is hard to compare the Switch to the WiiU for many reasons. Most have been stated already, so I will not repeat those. Another (that I haven't seen mentioned yet) is that with the WiiU's release, there was confusion because there were people who just did not realize it was a new system at all. They thought it was just an add-on, so passed over it, because they were casual players for the most part and most likely wouldn't have kept track on what is new or what-not.

As for the games themselves. For starters, NBA 2k..... It is 2K games! Personally, I have not played a single release from them that I have liked and/or was not buggy in some way. But for them, hopefully they can get the kinks out for future releases. If a game is buggy, it is not the systems fault, but rather on the developers. Pinning future releases on a single games success has always been a pathetic excuse to not want to do anything anymore.

The Switch does have a future, but realistically it comes down to the games that gets released on it. But for those games to succeed, the developers need to step up their game to make sure their releases are ready, and not rushed out like the 2K game seems to be. Get out of the "Day 1 Patch" mindset (to the Dev's)! The Switch can be a goldmine if it is utilized correctly for their releases. Inaction by their "wait and see" approaches actually hinder more than it helps.

Re: Super Mario Odyssey's File Size is Only a Little Bigger Than an NBA 2K18 Save File

SilentS

To have a 5gb save file, it sounds like the programmers erred somewhere. Even if it is saving career stats in a dynasty mode (no idea if it even has that option, just using it as an example) as well as saving custom made players, it should not be anywhere close to this. Unless it has the potential of saving multiple seasons/career modes, then the 5gb is more of a place holder for what it could need. But outside of that, there should be no reason.

Re: Some Retail Nintendo Switch Games Will Require You To Own A MicroSD Card

SilentS

So many posts here... Too many to read to see if this has been mentioned or not yet.... Been looking around, but from what I can tell the standard version of the game does not have this warning on it (that I saw). It is the other editions that do. And it states "Internet Download required. MicroSD card may be required."

.... "MAY BE" required......

Basically, stating if you don't have the room, you will need it for the downloads. This day and age that should be common sense even without the warning. Almost all the games that come out these days have Day 1 patches. Some of them are rather large in size. Articles like this are nothing more than fear mongering in trying to rile up people for no reason, as far as I am concerned.

As for the people in blaming Nintendo for the flash size... Just remember that if they increased the size, the cost would go up. The internal flash is more expensive than what the SD cards are made out of. If Nintendo did that and raised the cost accordingly, they may have priced the system out of the market for what it is. To those who do not know the difference, here is an example. A standard hard drive (HDD) vs a Solid State Drive (SSD). SDD's are stupidly expensive for the relatively small spaces they hold in comparison to the standard HDD's. They cannot be compared because of how differently they are made.

While not trying to defend Nintendo, this was probably their best options they could have done at this point in time. Even if they managed to do a 64gb internal flash, people would still gripe about the size (after they download the extra 3-4 retail games) in the end, and everything would repeat. At least with the SD cards, they are cheap and easily accessible if ever needed.

Re: PayPal Payment Option Arrives On Switch eShop

SilentS

Paypal is a joke. Their "exchange rate" is always wrong, and set in their favor. They have costed me so much in the past before I caught on to their "scam" (give an improper exchange rate to charge you more for less on the exchange). I will never use Paypal if I can ever help it.

Re: More Rumours Add Weight to Talk of a SNES Classic Mini

SilentS

@SLIGEACH_EIRE Yeah... I hate it when that happens. It has happened to me on a number of occasions for various orders in the past (twice for the Switch itself). But still does not change my statement. You have to try asap, because if you hesitate, it will be sold out and you lose out anyways. It is basically the only way, but it still has that risk of cancellation.

Re: Poll: Who Would You Like To See In Super Smash Bros. For Nintendo Switch?

SilentS

@PK_Boss11 Important part... Maybe for overrated whiny characters. I couldn't stand him back then, still cant now. So, I guess it would boil down to how you see it? Mario 64, Zelda OoT, Banjo Kazooie... They all would have happened regardless and they all set the standards for gaming. FF7 set no standards, just copied the trend.

But non of that has any baring on my opinion on keeping the requirement to those characters that have previously appeared on Nintendo systems. Sure other IP owners would love to have their characters in Smash Brother, that is obvious because of how immensely popular the franchise is, and how much exposure they would get being apart of it. One way to look at it, it would be a good bargaining chip for Nintendo if played correctly, "If you want to be in Smash, bring them to our system(s)." That could potentially work for any 3rd party IP.

Re: Poll: Who Would You Like To See In Super Smash Bros. For Nintendo Switch?

SilentS

I may be in the minority here, but I would prefer a Smash 5 rather than a port with the odd extra. I also have no issues with having more characters on the roster, as long as none of them are unbalanced (wishful thinking). Many have their own personal favorite character from the games they grew up with, so having them for options would be nice. But with that said, it would mean we would have clone characters with just different skins.

My concern is, I do not think any 3rd party character who has never shown up on a Nintendo system to begin with should not be eligible. Cloud is a prime example.

Re: Ubisoft Confirms It Has An Unannounced Nintendo Switch Game in Development

SilentS

@N8tiveT3ch I agree with you on Blood Dragon. That games "tutorial" was the best one I have ever played. I would instantly buy it again if it ever came to the switch, unedited of course.

As for Ubisoft in general, the only games I ever play from them have been the Far Cry games. Have virtually zero interest in anything else they make. However my 7 yr old daughter loves Just Dance 2017 for the Switch. She plays it daily.... So I will give them credit for that at least.

Re: Embrace the Giddy Madness of Disgaea 5 Complete With the Demo and Overview Trailer

SilentS

For those who are on the fence for this game due to the complexity.... While it may sound bad, it actually is fairly simple once you get used to it. The item world, character world for added stats, the bills to pass.... They are all rather straight forward. While most is optional, they add to the game overall. Sure you can simply play the game and beat it without touching the added content, but the extras just add to the game overall. If done correctly, you could be running around as a level one kill off lv 2000+ monsters (of course, you have to reincarnate a few times for this plus have your gear leveled up too).

I have all the Disgaea games, and 5 is one of the easiest ones to play, yet had some really challenging bosses if you wish to test your sanity against them...

Re: Video: Bask in the Giddy Drama of the Disgaea 5 Complete Opening Movie

SilentS

@NEStalgia The item world, once open, allows you to level up any item you have. It will give you an explanation when it opens, so don't worry about missing it. One way to look at it is "free battles", but that is not the only thing to it. You can skip each battle map if you want, but you would be making slower progress in making your items stronger. Also, keep in mind, the stronger the item the stronger the enemies. There is a lot to know about the item world, but it can be figured out as you begin to play it. But one of the main aspects of it is to unlock the "Innocents", which give the stat boosts. Once unlocked you can move them from item to item, boosting it up to insane levels. But once the mechanic is figured out, you will be set.

The game itself gives an easy enough overview on what you need to do, and if still stuck, there are many FAQ's out there that would explain it all in detail before giving away any sort of spoilers or unwanted hints.

Re: Stardock CEO Says Nintendo Switch Doesn't Need Third Party Support To Succeed

SilentS

In many cases, the reason why the Wii/WiiU versions of multi-platform games failed is because the ports were poor/shoddy watered down versions. Often missing features the other system versions had. It was almost like they were trying to make sure the Nintendo versions of their games did poorly so that they could walk away. When given the option, more often than not people will go after the more complete games that have all the features. Not after the ones that are missing features, or are just poor ports in general.

Nintendo can be blamed for many things, but in this case, the blame rests on the developers.

Re: Stardock CEO Says Nintendo Switch Doesn't Need Third Party Support To Succeed

SilentS

"It's too different than any of the others, and there isn't a lot of - I haven't seen a lot of third party success stories on the more recent Nintendo hardware"

There is a reason for that. Most of those so-called games are crap, actual good games have been few and far in between. His statement also means that people, especially him, are unable to think outside the box of the standard cookie cutter designs. In short, this guy is an idiot. The WiiU had potential, but the 3rd party devs were unable, or unwilling, to take advantage of what it had to offer. Almost like they were too afraid to try something new. Now with the Switch, it offers a more standard way of playing, just with the portable aspect added. So in that respect, it is not too different.

In short, the Switch does need 3rd party games, but not the crap shovel ware that plagued the Wii and WiiU. Not to mention game developers need to be more open minded.

Re: Playtonic Removes JonTron's Voice from Yooka-Laylee

SilentS

After listening to what was said in that "interview", it felt like he was setup without him being able to explain why he felt that way. So in turn taken out of context. What really makes this worse is how NeoGAF went full SJW and whined to Playtonic to get him removed, which afterwards they paraded the fact of what they did.

How Playtonic went about this should be noted by others on how NOT to handle this kind of situation.... Removing somebody on the spot, then harping on afterwards about it publicly (after JonTron even stated that he was disappointed, but wished them the best of luck), then treating their kickstarter backers like garbage..... There is going to be some fallout over this with some for a while.

I am in no way defending JonTron, since what he said was questionable at best, but this whole issue was blown out of proportion right from the get go.

Re: Site News: Nintendo Life is Red, Nintendo Life was Blue

SilentS

@antdickens Thank you. The timeline option makes it much easier to keep up to date on the latest posts.

As for your point on the editorial guys not wanting their posts to drop off, to me that is a moot point because once a topic is already read, only those who want to keep tabs on the comment section will either keep going back or have a new tab open staying on that page. It may sound harsh, but because of the different tastes of everybody, catering to older posts rather than new ones seems counterproductive to me. Giving us the option on which format should always give better results than forced options/opinions.

So with that said, keep up the good work. Don't let our griping stop you from offering new changes here, just don't limit our options please. Being customizeable will always give better results.

Re: Site News: Nintendo Life is Red, Nintendo Life was Blue

SilentS

I highly dislike the tile layout, just like how I hate it on the PushSquare site (actually have almost stopped going there completely now), in turn how I disliked it the last time you tried this kind of change last year. While change is nice to keep things from getting stale, not all changes are for the better to everybody. I come here daily, so all I want is to see what the latest posts are, in order, then go from there. Now the front page makes it uglier to go through for me. Having all those groups taking up half the main page also a huge turn-off for somebody who never uses groups to begin with. Everything else is fine by me.

Would love it if we could still have a toggleable option on what layout we prefer to get on the front page. I have given this kind of layout a chance on other sites, but, it still doesn't work for me.
