Today's Nintendo Direct has revealed that Octopath Traveler will be launching on Nintendo Switch on 13th July.
Seemingly ditching the word 'Project' from the game's name, Octopath Traveler is one that many players have been keeping an eye on for some time now. As you can see from the video segment below, today's Direct introduced two new protagonists, Tressa and Alfyn, showing off their abilities in the game.
A special edition of the game was also announced, and is set to include a pop-up book which introduces the game's eight characters and their places of origin, a helpful map for your adventure, a sound selection CD, and a replica coin based on the in-game currency. This special edition will be released on the same day as the standard version of the game.

My poor wallet...
Edit (because I posted a short comment so I could be first, and now that I am I'll write my full thoughts):
I don't see how anyone can look at this and not see a full AAA game. It's utterly gorgeous, has well developed gameplay, and appears to have a boatload of content. I'm curious to see how people try to redefine "AAA" so they can maintain their "where are the AAA games?" narrative.
We already knew it, but man is this a beautiful looking game. RPGs are generally not for me but it's games like this that make me want to start liking them.
it also received a name. they did the smart thing and jsut removed 'project' from it!
So....I'm going to go get a third job. Anybody else?
One my most anticipated games this year! The name didn't change much but it suits the concept.
Just what we needed, another por...oh hang on a sec...
Definitely my most anticipated game of 2018 so far. Can't wait!
It was cool that Smash Bros for Switch was announced but...
OH MY FRIGGIN GOSH OCTOPATH TRAVELER GOT A RELEASE DATE HYPE!!!
A lovely looking game with a lovely looking special edition
Can't wait for this game finally a decent rpg for my switch, and coming in time for winter bus commutes every day!
Looks like I'll need to sell a kidney to cover this years expenditure .
Yaaay!
@JimmySpades I know right? It even has full voice acting! (Well most of the time)
When can i preorder?!?!?
i still need to know the price.
Perfect summer game. I'll most likely pick this up as I enjoyed the demo last year and Bravely Default.
Yayy a release date! I tried the demo for this game and I'm super excited to get it when it comes out!
Game looks super polished, the demo was great. Will be sure to pick this up.
Can’t wait
my wallet is not going to survive this year.
Day one!
Day 1 buy for me, Switch or no Switch.
Came back to commenting NintendoLife (it's been a busy month, y'all) just for this Direct.
Octopath Traveler is the final name, then. Talk about anticlimactic.
Hopefully this will not the last we see from Square-Enix.
Now with Crash Bandicoot and Super Smash Bros. (what a sentence) being a reality, there's one thing I want on Switch...
Not the soundtrack. The games.
Only two wishes I have for this... Enough stock so that I can actually get a copy of the Special Edition, and I hope that retailers can do the preorders. It would suck if it was through the Square website only because of their outrageous shipping prices and bad shipping times (had an order take just over 2 months for an "express shipping" option).
I need this and I can't find where to pre-order.
HYYYYPE!!!! July can't come soon enough!
@JJ286 They just announced it today, I bet it wont be for a few days until preorder information becomes available at the very soonest. On the games Facebook page, they keep saying "more information to come soon".... I am looking as well.
Hype! The games looks wonderful, and the gameplay is fantastic. We need more turn based RPGs on the Switch, the system is perfect for them.
....And if Square wants to bring Kingdom Hearts while they are at it, I'll certainly won't complain!
So happy they kept the Octopath name. And the SE is beautiful, even if I probably can't afford.
Everyone was debating what the name would be. I knew they would just drop "project" and go with "Octopath Traveler."
Looks like a neat set. I'll have to go back and look at the demo again as I didn't play too much of it.
I loved the Demo and I'm definitely picking up this game. I'm loving the story, the characters, the gameplay, the battle system, the art direction, the music... I'm really hyped!
Honestly didn't expect this so soon. Day one for me!
Very nice looking SE to go with what is shaping up to be a great game.
Lovely special edition. I especially like that pop-out diarama. With that said, it's just more stuff to clutter up my room, so I'll give the SE a hard pass.
Really excited for the game, though. I didn't expect it to release so soon!
THIS IS THE NEW FINAL FANTASY WE ALL DESERVE, NOT THE CRAP THAT IS BEING RELEASED IN THE PAST YEARS!!!!!!!
Fantastic and it's on the best day and month of the Summer too.
Really looking forward to this one.
@AlexSora89 Same here. It seems like, aside from a few big games, Nintendo consoles have been a dumping ground for experimental games from Square Enix for a while now. Everything else gets the AAA team with Kingdom Hearts, Tomb Raider, and Final Fantasy while Nintendo gets a couple of Dragon Quest remasters and the B-team with Bravely Default, Octopath Traveler, I am Setsuna, and Lost Sphear (two of which are available elsewhere as well). Not bad games by any means, but definitely not the big ones that people really want.
Will so want to try and get this special edition^^
That LE looks nice. But Not even willing to pay $60 - this is another Switch game Ill get on a sale later on.
It just makes no sense that something like NinoKuni2 and this are at the same price.
i love the game and the wooden-like box looks really good...on the other hand, the common artbox is weak just black background and the logo
This edition looks really nice. Always like it, when they include maps in their special editions.
Can't wait for this game.
This and Smash was all I needed for this Direct
@JJ286 Gamestop! I pre ordered mine over a month ago.
That looks like a really awesome collectors edition. I wasn’t sure about this game as I haven’t really played many games in this vein. But after that reveal I am really tempted to get into a turn based RPG like this.
@BlackenedHalo Personally I like the cover. It's like Skyrim's 🙂
That pop-up book alone is enough for me but this version of the book comes with a full game on my favourite system, and music to listen to while admiring the book!
That Collector Edition is MINE. DAY ONE.
I do like this game although it was not what I expected. It reminds me of Dragon Warrior when it first launched. Looks good.
The European version of this does not come with the sound selection CD.

@Shambo Only if you import from the US. The European version does not come with the sound selection CD.
is the demo not on the eShop anymore? i can't seem to find it ...
Wow! The game is already at the top of my Most Wanted list, but this Special Edition just looks fantastic. I hope it's not too expensive, as I'd love that soundtrack. The music and art in this game are just breathtaking.
I liked calling it "P.O.T.", oh well.
Simply can't wait for this game. I might have been more excited over the Octopath news than anything else on the direct yesterday. I am gonna try my best to get the special edition but I have a strong feeling it will be in limited quantities and pre orders will be up and gone before you know it.
@emaan
It's still there. Search Octopath in the search area and it will come up. Such a great game with a lot of content surprisingly for a free demo.
@mtbmonkey I meant the Special Edition.
@eaglebob345
YES! Finally someone who understands what I mean!
@AlexSora89 Great minds think alike! 😃
It's definitely a trend that we've seen since the GameCube that I hope they quit soon.
