The streaming services are not really needed. As it stands most current/new TV's already have it built in already. Why do we need ~another~ device to have it? You would be hard pressed to find it not on something that may already be connected to your current home setup. I personally think it is a waste of time and resources to add them.
As for the USB Hard drive support, that would be nice. Even if it uses an USB flash drive and/or USB adapters for SD cards. Those could be swapped on the go easily enough as you need the space, or have it with each one having specific games you could interchange. It does not necessarily need to be an actual Hard Drive itself.
EA's current catalog is not worth while for me. I used to play their NHL games, but havn't liked any since 2000, so stopped playing them. I would not mind if they revive their old unused IP's though, then MAYBE I would consider buying one of their games again.
EA wont fully support the Switch. That much is known. And only way they would keep supporting it is if it sells well. But it wont sell well if there are no games. Gotta love the catch-22 scenario that killed the WiiU. BUT if the 3DS developers move to the Switch (but not abandon the 3ds hopefully), then that would help sales and increase the catalog.
I am not holding my breath, but if things work out, this should help in the long run. However, many of the bigger 3rd party companies are rather two-faced, so it would not surprise me when they start making excuses on why they wont do anything after a point.
One reason they may not state battery life is that they havnt fully tested it under the final hardware specs? That or they are scrambling to change them all so that they are not using the same ones that Samsung were using ;p
@SLIGEACH_EIRE It isn't necessarily what Nintendo gets, it is what The Pokemon Company gets with their deal with Niantic (they wouldn't deal with Nintendo directly). From there Nintendo, being 1/3 owner (or whatever percentage it is) of TPC, gets to collect after everything is said and done. So it won't be anything extravagant like some people may seem to think.
Guess this news answers the question if he was still alive or not that I had just the other day when I was rewatching the Duck Tales series with my daughter. Feel bad about it now in hindsight.
I have mixed feelings about this update. As someone who rarely posts here, I have been coming to this site for quite some time. There are times when the simplest designs are the best. While I do not mind updates, this one is a bit too much at once. Here are a few things I noticed right away:
-Takes forever to load now, 2-3 times longer than before on all pages. Even longer for user comments to load.
-Wasted spaces and use of space (too many open spaces everywhere, pages in general too narrow. Optimize the page width)
-Comments section is way too narrow (remove the column on the side and make the comments take up more space side to side. Will make reading text walls easier, AKA Kirk's posts ;p)
-Also with the comments section, when posts are added, it pushes this comment window off the screen, which makes it annoying to type out.
-Main page: when it first loaded, there were links to articles written 2 years ago (May 2014 is what I saw)... Ok? Also the grid was a bit of a mess (biased here, never liked grid layouts anyways). "Top stories" are annoying. I always despised sites with those because often they are old articles, and/or irrelevant to what I want to read. I come here to check out new articles, not to revisit old ones that I have already read, with only the user comments added to them.
All in all, change can be a good thing, but often it should be more subtle instead of major overhauls like this. Not all of us can accept major changes easily, especially when we are set in our ways.
@aaronsullivan Zaxxon was the first thing that popped into mind when watching the first video. Fuz's link solidified the thought. Glad to know somebody else remembers this classic..... Now I want to dig out my old Coleco to play it.
Not entirely unexpected, but still surprising none-the-less. When the news of his tumor came to light, there would have always been a fear of it coming back and/or playing a factor on his health. This is truly a great loss to not just Nintendo, but to the gaming world as a whole. He may not have been liked or taken seriously by some, but one thing that cannot be doubted was his dedication and love towards what he did.
Pricing for Canadian players: $27.88 for a single system, $37.08 for both systems Ryu + Suzaku Castle $7.49, $8.79 for both Lucas $4.99, $6.29 both Roy $4.99, $6.29 both . . .... etc I hate the fluctuating dollar.......
I have only bought 2 myself. Samus and Link (only one out of the collection that got opened). My wife on the other hand has managed to get every single one of them. Hardest one for her was the Villager one, which she ended up getting the Japanese version for.
Aside from just simply collecting them all for a set, they can be considered useful by the players at large. Sure you can call it on disk DLC, but it is done in a reasonable way compared to what DLC is in general. Plus, all you need is a single one for multiple games, you dont have to keep rebuying it for every game. I for one see more potential in them, only downfall thus far is the fact stock has been severely underestimated to the demand. Interested to see if Nintendo will expand on this for content or not in the future, with a more reasonable amount of stock to avoid scalpers that is.
G'N'G was stupidly hard, especially since you have to run through it twice to truly beat it. I gave up after the first time, cause it was hard enough as it was and I played it so much to be sick of the game at the time. Many people were considered really good just for passing the first level.
Besides, the way I see it, only reason Battletoads is really brutal is because of the coop mode. Being able to attack each other. If it wasnt for that fact, then it would only be a single stage or 2 that would get most people.
Nope didnt use cheats. If I did, it wouldnt have taken months of constant playing. As hard as games were back then, I always thought BattleToads difficulty was about par with a bunch of other games from that era, which was dubbed Nintendhard by todays standards. Still, found that one easier to beat than Ghost 'N' Goblins and Contra (1-2 in my hardest game beaten list).
Legend to beat it? Hardly. A friend and I beat it a few times, in co-op mode to boot. Sure it took us a few months, but it is doable once you memorize the stages. Still, it would be nice to bring back those kind of difficult games once again because todays games are just way too easy in comparison.
This already exists for those who managed to pick up a Retron 5 system. It already does a surprisingly good job of converting old Gameboy games to play on the big screen.
I still have my launch day DS. That thing has taken a lot of abuse over the years and it still works great even today, plus a full charge lasts days still. Now my 4 yr old daughter uses it for her games. I found it much more comfortable than the DS Lite that came out later that my wife bought, probably because of my big hands.
I forgot how insane that game can be on some tracks. This one was nuts, and forces me to admit that I would probably never be able to finish a lap, never mind the race
I am just wondering if it will be as chaotic as it was with an 8-player game of Micro Machines on the PS1. The hilarity back then was well worth it, hopefully this could be just as much fun.
@CaptainToad I fully agree!! The hours upon hours that this game consumed playing the 4-player mode consisted of almost every free moment I had back then with my friends.
Even if Perfect Dark was better in every way to Goldeneye, 007 was the game that was always picked to play every day.... Minus the proximity mines. They were boycotted by my friends cause I always knew the best places to place them
@Usagi-san There is a difference in a mod and just blatantly copying a game directly, which is what the Mario web game did. This DK mod was just somebody having fun in showing off what the game would have looked like using a different engine. Yes there are some infringements with this, but they are minor at best and are nowhere near as bad as the web game.
One thing about DLC is that it is totally optional. If you do not like it, then simply do not get it. No harm done, especially if it is free. But if you whine that it is even available in general and about those who do get it, then you got other issues you need to deal with first. This one for MK8 is harmless and wont affect anybody one way or another, so to the whiners, give it a rest. Even if it is a bit out of place, it still a very minor issue at best. If and when it actually starts affecting gameplay then you may have a case.
Glad I kept all my old games for every system I had. At least I have a 100+ game library for it when I finally do get the system. Time to hit up the pawnshops now for the cheap games I dont have!
@RantingThespian I believe Nintendo at the time also accepted and stated that as a fact too that once DK grew up, he dropped the Jr from his name and that Cranky is the original DK. That being said Cranky is retired and no longer known as DK anymore. So the article needs to be updated to reflect the fact that the DK Jr in the original kart game is one in the same as the other DK in the later games, and not separate characters.
As for the topic on hand, I always ended up using either Toad or Yoshi when I played. On a side note, I dont really care if there are 30 racers or not, that number is of little concern as opposed to the game itself. If it is half as fun as it looks, then it will be worth it no matter how many or little racers there are to select from.
The gamepad could be a potential goldmine for developers. But they are either too intimidated or too clueless on to how to utilize it correctly. As much as people hate EA, you have to admit that the EA Sports division should have loved that option for their sports games. And that is just an example.
The worst part about this whole ordeal is that many people are too hung up on "Graphics and power" of the systems to realize that they fail to see the full potential of the WiiU system and the fact that Sony and MS will just copy the concept in due time anyways. Just like they always do after Nintendo takes the initiative and tries something new.
Personally I love playing the WiiU. My 4yr old daughter loves the system too and always wants me to use the gamepad. She hates the PS3 and 360 when I turn them on (go figure ). I see so much potential for the gamepad, it is just too unfortunate that it is under utilized, especially from Nintendo itself. Off screen play is one thing, and it is nice, but it is not needed nor required for every game for the players.
I hope to see more games use it this year. But it is up to Nintendo to come out and show everybody what it can really do since it is their own machine. Hopefully from there others will take notice and see that there is so much to do with it.
I am fine with DLC that is added after the fact. But if a game is designed around the DLC model, like so many other games, then it is not worth it for the players. This means that Nintendo is releasing a complete game. Anything more is just bonus. However if they take up the same stance as EA or Capcom (for example), then you know you will have to keep paying just to unlock content that is already in the game and has been planned around.
As per usual people over blow minor issues when it comes to the WiiU. The lack of storage space is very minor when you think about it. As people have stated if you want more, it takes nothing to connect an external drive. I for one preferred that Nintendo released the system with the small flash memory. It kept the prices down making it cheaper to buy. I already have multiple external drives for various reasons for the PC, it took nothing to just move one to the WiiU.
As an example (yet not limited to) why I prefer it this way, take a look at the PS3. If you only had a 250 gb drive, and later want to upgrade to a larger drive, you will lose everything you have on that drive unless you have access to a second PS3 (with an empty drive) you can use to transfer everything off of that system, then back on to the new drive. With the WiiU setup, this will never be an issue.
I say let the developers offer either mandatory or optional installs. Just as long as they make sure if it is mandatory, they state it flat out so that if somebody buys those games, they know full well it will be needed. If it is optional, then let the user decide on what they want to do. I call laziness in the end if the devs use this as an excuse.
