Disgaea 5 Complete is a game that could satisfy multiple needs for Switch owners - RPG strategy fans, those that love Japanese games and completionists look set to get a lot of bang for their buck. If you're not quite sure what to make of it, however, we don't blame you; maybe a demo and overview trailer can help.
The demo for Disgaea 5 Complete is now live on the North American eShop, though European players will need to wait until 19th May (or setup a North American Nintendo Account to get it now); just head to the 'Coming Soon' section and select its game page to find the demo link. In addition, there's an overview trailer to showcase the game's charms.
We are in the process of reviewing Disgaea 5 Complete, it's a game that demands plenty of time - our review will be with you before the game launches on 23rd May in North America (it arrives on 26th May in Europe).

Very good news. I've no idea about the series, so this could be just the thing.
I've never played a Disgae game but I've heard great things about the series and was considering picking this one up later in the summer. I'll be downloading the demo tonight for sure.
Yeah, I really wanted a demo for this one as well before deciding to jump in. It looks interesting, but just don't know if I'll really enjoy it. Hopefully the demo will be convincing enough!
Was on the fence a demo will be the deciding factor
Not gonna lie, the trailer has me interested.
I have it on the PS4 so I won't be getting this version (at least on full price). But I highly recommend it to any fan of the SRPG genre.
After watching the trailer i'm kind of changing my mind about it. Gonna try it through demo but i'm not so sure about it, not anymore. Seems too much complicated and confusionary to me, with way too much characters. I'm kinda scared of it...
I want games that squeeze the most out of their tiny Switch cartridges and this 200+ hour strategic RPG seems to fulfil my wishes and expectations. A game to dive in deep! Zelda, this, Skyrim, Dragon Quest and obviously Xenoblade 2 are high on my Swishlist.
I hope the demo arrives in EU soon and leaves a good impression on me.
I was on the fence with this one so i am happy that there is a demo
Yes, a demo!
This is going to be awesome.
@FGPackers Really lol. Just go with the characters you like best and stick with them. If you find a new one while playing switch it up. Good thing about the demo for you though.
I like the artwork for this note, ^^
This is in my wishlist?, yes, but, Switch is first... Oh well, XD
Woohooo finally some NL Disgaea love! And finally a demo, but a week out from release, might as well just wait for the real deal.
@SKTTR Switshlist just became a standard part of my vocabulary!
@FGPackers Yeah, it's actually a kind of scary franchise in terms of the complexity I've tried getting into it before on Vita with D3 and it didn't go very well. I actually LOVED the game, and did well, and then suddely a difficulty spike and I felt like I had no idea what I was doing. I've heard from a few people that D5 is the most accessible Disgaea so far though, so I'm really hoping it goes better this time, because I actually DO love the whole game concept and story design and structure...I just sucked too bad at it and needed more direction. I felt lost and confused Be frightened AND excited?
I've have this purchased, but I'll download the demo. It'll tide me over until the game arrives.
@Spoony_Tech the fact is that i love RPGs. So this will surely have a chance. Even gameplay seems a little bit complicated from trailer though. I hope demo will clear my mind
@NEStalgia yeah i also fear difficulty spikes with all this complexity between characters and sll numbers at screen. I'm really confused about this game right now. I hope this weekend will serve well to decide. But if it was 75% yes at start, now it's 40%, 50% at best
Oh snap, demo? Downloading!
One of the most interesting third-party titles on Switch, IMHO. Never played a Disgaea, which meant I wasn't quite ready to preorder - so a demo is ideal.
@FGPackers To be fair, I know 4 has a legendary unfair difficulty spike, but in 3 I think I just didn't understand how to properly grind in optional battles. It kind of opened up all at once all these huge stores with dozens and dozens of available items and all of them had huge price tags. I THINK I was supposed to grind before I continued, but didn't know where. 3 IS a pretty old game though, so it also was probably not an ideal place to start into the series.
It's definitely a game that needs awareness of stats and numbers, but, it's an SRPG, so that's kind of a given I'm HOPING I get into it more. It's a fun world. It doesn't take itself seriously even slightly, it seems to bask in its low budget status, and I suspect if you don't thoroughly suck it's a generally easier game than Fire Emblem or SMT: Devil Survivor.
Perfect! Hope more games get demos as I've never played the series so will definetly check out the demo
I wasn't interested in this, but will definitely check out a demo and give it a chance.
I'm intrigued..
@FGPackers don't forget characters reach max lv of 9999.
I've never played a Disgaea game before. I'm intrigued, but concerned that it might be slightly too cerebral for my level of gaming intellect. A demo sounds like a fantastic idea. Cheers!
Downloading demo!
I'm glad that they're providing a demo. I would have considered buying this blindly (mainly due to a lack of alternative options on Switch at the moment), but a demo will allow me to make a more informed decision, which probably isn't the best move on the publisher's part (as there are many games that I decided not to buy due to the demo), but it could also sway many who are undecided.
I wonder if progress in the demo can be transferred to the full game. The demos for Disgaea 1+2 on Steam let you do so, so maybe.
Either way, I'll be grabbing this demo tonight to tide me over until next week.
I loved the first and second ones, but I had a really hard time getting into 5 on the PS4- perhaps because it was too similar gameplay wise to the other two I'd played, and the characters weren't Laharl, Etna, and Flonne.
Plus the hub world music did my nut in.
Won't be double dipping on this I'm afraid.
This is exciting!
I tried this game on PS4, but went in expecting FE, which it is not. It kind of turned me off but in hindsight I realize it's a fantastic game, it's just a different. I've always wanted to go back and give it a real shot and now I have the perfect excuse because I love playing games on switch and I love taking it with me every day. I'm infected with Switchidus so badly I even started using Vita remote play lately in my desperate attempt to "bring the games I'm playing with me".
Hope as many people try this as possible.
@FGPackers
Looks like there's a cheat shop. Any issues, hit the shop and sort it out!
@MrGawain Ever since at least the 4th game, you've been able to change the hub and item world music. Not sure if you have to unlock it first or if it is available from the start in D5 or not though. Minor feature, but definitely something that makes a big difference to me.
I have it pre-ordered! I only ever played the PSP port of the original and I recall liking it. The demo will be a nice way to see if this really is going to work for me, or if my funds will be better allocated to ARMs or something else. It's just nice to see a demo get released for once! I feel like just about the only other games with demos are Snipperclips and Just Dance.
This'll be my 9th Switch game. Yeesh!
Loved Disgaea on the DS and Final Fantasy Tactics is my favourite hand-held game of all time so this even before I pre-ordered the Switch was high on my priority list.
Bring on May 26th 😁 then I get some Neon Yellow Joycon's next month and ARMS and Cave Story + my wallet is gonna be real empty.
@SMW You could change the item world music in the first game.
This is awful, I thought the Switch doesn't have games, so why does my wallet ache so much?
For those who are on the fence for this game due to the complexity.... While it may sound bad, it actually is fairly simple once you get used to it. The item world, character world for added stats, the bills to pass.... They are all rather straight forward. While most is optional, they add to the game overall. Sure you can simply play the game and beat it without touching the added content, but the extras just add to the game overall. If done correctly, you could be running around as a level one kill off lv 2000+ monsters (of course, you have to reincarnate a few times for this plus have your gear leveled up too).
I have all the Disgaea games, and 5 is one of the easiest ones to play, yet had some really challenging bosses if you wish to test your sanity against them...
Great news on this demo .. downloading now. Last Disagea I played was 3 and I really enjoyed it . Looks like another huge game ready to go right after I finish Breath of the Wild ( just got my Switch a couple weeks ago).
And this, ladies and germs, is what I've been waiting since Switch's launch for. This overview trailer summed up why I love the Disgaea series and why its great to have it back on Nintendo systems again. Playing the first game on my PSP is still one of my greatest gaming memories - recapturing that magic on Switch as well as offering the tv experience is everything I could possibly hope for. Still upset that Japan have had this since day one - we should have had it on day one too. But better late than never, and its not like i hadn't already started the game on my PS4.
the game just came out in the JP eshop back in launch..i actually bought it and it has FULL ENGLISH text and voice. Also, includes DLC's
Looks great. Too bad I'm so burnt out on the series atm, kind of like with Fire Emblem, and I still have to play through Disgaea 4!
This will definitely be the platform I grab D5 on, though. Glad it's no longer stuck on a stationary platform.
@FGPackers Don't be too intimidated. There is a ton of stuff to do in these games, but the vast majority of it is optional, and the game should teach you everything you need to know.
It's kind of like Pokemon in that it can be a simple adventure or an uber-complex simulation with a million factors to consider, depending on how you play.
Looks really really good
@Ralizah @JaxonH @edgedino @NEStalgia @Spoony_Tech i watched a video of a person playing the demo and now that i watched something i kind of changed my mind again... :S it does not seems too much complicated, it seems more a matter of learning what all that numbers are, and about characters number it is more a management rather than create a party and taking characters to level up. Now it seems really different and interesting lol
By the way thanks for helping guys. Looking forward to this
I was going to preorder, but the demo talked me out of it. haha.
@Ralizah That's a cool description. My experience with 3 was definitely daunting. I did very well, and then hit some wall around the time the Geo Puzzles were introduced and was getting one shot constantly. The level progression of 3 just felt rough...but it's a PS2 game, so I have to expect that sort of thing. I've been looking forward to 5 for some time though!
@NEStalgia Disgaea 3 is actually a PS3 game. It's also not very good, imo, in terms of the plot/characters. The game has one joke, and it runs that joke into the ground over and over and over. It's unbearable.
Disgaea 1 and 2 are great, though. A nice mix of cute humor and some serious dramatic bits. There's one moment in particular from the first game that almost choked me up.
@Ralizah Yeah, so is Last Guardian And BotW is a Switch game Well, a PS3 game that was designed around PS2
For me it was the gameplay that ruined it though. That difficulty spike and the fact that it opened up all kinds of shops and everything kind of all at once with no explanation at all about how anything works. I went from having a solid handle on steadily adding elements to the game to "wow here's everything and I have NO idea what I'm supposed to be doing or why I can't survive a single fight." The design/pacing was just crummy and low budget. It's a 10 year old game so I can kind of forgive it. I have much higher hopes for 5, but I'm cautiously optimistic
