Re: Random: Tetris: The Grand Master Home Port Announcement Revealed By Announcement Delay

RudyC3

Yeah I know this is supposed to be one of the best versions but we've already had Tetris Effect recently, so releasing this off the back of Tetris Effect makes you wonder what the Tetris Company is thinking (I know they're not making the game themselves, just licensing out the rights to external developers, but still)

EDIT: My bad I should have read the article in full, so this is not at all confirmed for Switch or anything.

Re: Best Nintendo Switch Horror Games

RudyC3

Just coming off of playing both Outlast games on Switch and have to say these were some of the creepiest and downright uncomfortable (in a good way given the genre) experiences I've ever had. Alien Isolation remains my top game in the genre, and the Switch version is great, but Outlast is way scarier to me. The gore that goes way overboard is a big reason for this.

Re: No, You Can't Use Rumble Paks Or Other Accessories With The N64 Wireless Controller

RudyC3

Not gonna lie, I really want this controller, if not for use on Nintendo switch online, but so I can use it on my PC on emulators. Other Switch controllers are detected and compatible with Windows out of the box (Steam even has button layouts specifically for those pads), so surely this one would work too?

I have a USB adapter for original N64 controllers, but all of those I own are a bit long in the tooth at this point. Hopefully the stick on those new ones is more reliable than back in the day.

Re: Every Nintendo Switch Online N64 Game Ranked

RudyC3

They have never re-released Pilotwings 64 and to see it still devoid of a re-release really breaks my heart. Being able to replay it may just be what I need to make me accept to fork out the outrageous price they're asking.

I also hope we get Ridge Racer 64 eventually as that was also a great game, developed by NST. I know Namco, today Bandai Namco, owns the rights to the brand but with the price they're asking, surely they can arrange something to put it in our hands again.

Re: Poll: What Do You Think Of The Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack Price?

RudyC3

The N64 games is the only thing I'm interested in in there. I don't play Animal Crossing and didn't grow up with Mega Drive/ Genesis and don't care for it. So it's ridiculous that I should be expected to pay that much for N64 and some extra stuff added on top that I don't want.

I want to be able to enjoy N64 without having to pay for all that extra stuff, they should just add N64 to the regular plan and make the regular plan a bit more expensive if they have to. But I won't be paying for Mega Drive and Animal Crossing.

Re: Nintendo Switch Online's N64 Games Will Be 60Hz In Europe After All

RudyC3

The choice is welcome, and I'm glad they made that decision. I can see the different versions not playing nice with one another online, but I would assume that since you would only play with people you know from your friends list anyway, and not random people, all involved players would speak the same language and therefore would be playing either all the 60Hz version or all the 50Hz version for the localised ones. So this shouldn't be too much of an issue, I would hope.

Personally even as a non-native speaker, I only play in English these days and probably won't touch the 50Hz versions ever, except maybe for Smash Bros. for the French announcer, which sends nostalgic shivers up and down my spine whenever I hear it ^^.

Re: Poll: What's A Fair Price For The Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack?

RudyC3

I don't care about Genesis/MD and there are not a TON of N64 games that they could add to the service that I'd absolutely want to play. There are absolutely essential N64 titles on there that I do want on my Switch, especially multiplayer games to play them online but, let's be realistic, the catalogue of must-play N64 titles numbers perhaps 50 games and not all of them can be expected to make it on the service due to licensing issues or other technical difficulties preventing it.

So $£€5 would be my ideal price, but I can see a problem with that already, they would want to offer a nice round price for non-yearly subscriptions as well so I'm more expecting a price like $£€10 per year and then maybe 3 for 3 months and 1 or 1.50 per month if you want a short time to just sample the extra content.

Re: PS1-Style Horror Tartarus Key Coming To Switch In 2022

RudyC3

3D PS1 games have aged horribly. And whenever a game goes for "a PS1 look" it's always THAT look. The best PS1 horror games for me had prerendered backgrounds. Nobody tries that style anymore. Why can't we have a game like REBirth on Switch, but a new one, in that style, not of the RE franchise, but just a talented studio attempting the pre-rendered look but with today's technology. Back in the day it was a means to make a game better looking than if you ran it natively and with the Switch being underpowered, wouldn't it make sense there?

Re: Review: Darksiders III - A Poor Switch Port Of A Distinctly Average Series Entry

RudyC3

Such a shame, the port of the first game to Switch is excellent. I do think the second game had issues at launch that got ironed out eventually. I guess this one is perhaps asking too much of the Switch hardware? If at least they could fix the bugs, this could still be worth it when the time comes for a Switch successor, capable of running older games much better (just brute forcing through the poorly optimised code so to speak).

Re: The Shadowrun Trilogy Is Coming To Nintendo Switch In 2022

RudyC3

I only played Shadowrun Returns back in the day on PC and enjoyed it quite a lot. Never got round to play the sequels/expansions so will be glad to play through them on Switch. I hope they run well. They should as these are not super demanding games, but I really hope they don't botch them. I enjoyed the soundtrack in Returns in particular.

Re: Rumour: It Looks Like Nintendo Will Soon Unveil A New Controller For Switch

RudyC3

Game Boy doesn't need a specific controller for it. If the rumoured N64 games for Switch online are true though, an N64 classic controller would make sense cause those games don't always translate well to controllers that don't have at least 6 face buttons. Remapping N64 buttons to a more modern controllers for those games is kind of a nightmare.

I'll admit though, what I would really like to see, especially for a future new Switch model (the switch's successor) are JoyCon with analog triggers akin to those of the XBox One and Series S/X consoles. Driving and racing games especially need these so bad and potential future Gamecube releases would make so much more sense with those... and updated joysticks to avoid any future drift debacle on Switch 2. I understand why they may be stuck with their current ones now to ensure 100% compatibility in one ecosystem, but if they're gonna make a whole new Switch, scrap those crappy sticks once and for all, go for a different manufacturer.

Re: Random: IKEA's Gaming Range Has The Essentials, Like A Mug Holder And Neck Pillow

RudyC3

Never been so enlightened than when I watched Gamers Nexus's video on buying an office chair over a gaming chair. Gaming chairs, or most of them anyway, are simply a scam, they're potentially harmful for your long term health even I'd wager. My old man, as he's nearing retirement, is often sitting for long hours in front of his computer and wanted to buy a gaming chair from a local store that had a deal on them, I told him "ask if you can try it out first before you fork any money for one", and it's good that he was able to, cause he said it was a horrible experience sitting in it.

Anything coming out of Ikea with the word "gaming" attached to it, I'd be wary of instantly. With that being said, heck, a shelf or a desk, whether it's from Ikea or anyone else is just furniture, it's not like that can harm you. But you don't need a "gaming" shelf or desk to game. Attaching the word "gaming" to it is just another way to milk more money out of naive customers.

Re: Boulder Dash Deluxe Smashes Its Way Onto Switch This Week

RudyC3

This series was fantastic on Commodore 64, I grew up on this, but any newer game released after 1990 pretty much fails to capture the brilliance of the original games.

It used to be all about the physics of the game and how each level was a puzzle of physics and logic to collect the required amount of diamonds to get the exit open and usually, you needed to collect most if not all of them to do it. More recent games are way too easy by comparison and rely more on gimmick items rather than clever use of physics to solve situations.

Boulder Dash II was the pinnacle of the series IMHO.

Re: Switch Takes Japan's Entire Top 30 Software Chart, The First Console To Do So Since 1988

RudyC3

30 years ago digital sales were not really a thing though, unless you count Famicom Disk System disk write kiosks as digital sales which admittedly they kind of were.

This top doesn't say how many tens of thousands of digital sales were made on Switch, or PS5 for that matter. That doesn't necessarily mean other platforms aren't doing well, could also be a case of Switch players preferring physical so as to save on SD card or internal storage (you can even get physical games for cheaper than through the eShop sometimes so it totally makes sense). The same issue isn't entirely true on PS5, though admittedly PS5 games are much larger in general and getting an extra NVME SSD with the right specs can be pretty pricey as well, but then physical copies don't command the same kind of premium on PS5 as they tend to do on Switch cartridges.

Re: Fatal Frame: Maiden Of Black Water Will Haunt Switch At Halloween

RudyC3

@ferroreo Because I already ordered from Play Asia and found myself having to pay more than half the value of the game in customs fees. Never again.

If Play- Asia lists a supposedly European physical release, then that means some retailers in Europe should sell it too eventually, assuming they're not full of *****.

Re: The Smurfs - Mission Vileaf Is A Cutesy 3D Platformer Heading to Switch

RudyC3

I feel like it's a shame that their popularity nowadays is more based on their horrendous CG incarnations and mediocre film adaptations. The original comics and 80s animated show were so much better and actually jolly good fun. There's room with today's technology for a handdrawn sidescroller that truly captures the fun and aesthetic of the original works if put in the right hands.

Microids' track record isn't all that great though so I wouldn't trust "them" to pull it off, as they're more into cash grabs than actual efforts to deliver something truly outstanding.

Re: Talking Point: Where Does The Switch OLED Announcement Leave The Rumoured Switch Pro?

RudyC3

I see this Switch model as a stopgap before the true next generation of Switch. We're 4+ years into the lifecycle of the system now and Nintendo systems in the past have rarely remained unsupplanted for more than 6 years, 6 years and a half at most, as we've seen with the Wii, DS and 3DS. So expecting the new generation of Switch to launch within a time frame of a year and a half from now, say holiday of 2022 is a realistic scenario. Forget about "Pro", it should be a proper new generation fully backwards compatible with the current Switch, except maybe Nintendo will do what Sony and MS do now, which is that the new gen should run older games better than the OG Switch could and Nintendo themselves, along with indie developers at least, should keep releasing games that work on both but major 3rd parties more so than others at first will be making games for the new system that couldn't run on older tech, mostly ports from PS4/PS5 maybe. Nintendo should also announce games that won't run on the older model if they really want the install base to grow and be there very early on, to warrant 3rd parties' involvement with the new gen, the way that the OG Switch managed it.

Nintendo's mistake in replacing those previous systems, the Wii in particular and the DS to a lesser degree, is that they waited till it was all out of steam already in the marketplace before offering a successor, meaning those people's engagement with the brand was already gone, many that still wanted to play games had started to look elsewhere. How many players outside of Nintendo's core fans were still playing their Wii or DS by the time Wii U and 3DS arrived? Precious few especially in the case of the Wii. I don't think Nintendo will want to wait till the Switch is completely out of traction on the market to announce and release the new system. I'd expect a simultaneous price drop of the current switch family just as they announce the new generation if they really want the announcement to not put the nail in the coffin for the current family and keep the Switch at the forefront in peoples' minds. This is especially true of a system that could still probably sell to a few people that have not gotten into switch yet because of the perceived high price for what is essentially low powered tech.

Re: Rumour: EA Is Planning On Reviving An "Established IP"

RudyC3

If we didn't get Mass Effect Trilogy, I won't get my hopes up for anything else they may have had in store. I don't trust them to deliver though I DO buy their games whenever they actually surprise and deliver. I did get NFSMW on Wii U AND Mass Effect 3, cause I was hoping they'd release the other 2 eventually. I did get NFS Hot Pursuit and Burnout Paradise on Switch and was hoping to see more from them, but they're not making enough of an effort to put their best output on Switch and that's my beef with them.

Re: Memory Pak: My Very First Shiny Pokémon

RudyC3

My first shiny was a shiny Zubat in Pokémon Silver, I believe it was at night in Mt. Moon. I had never even heard of shiny Pokémon, but I would soon find out through magazines reporting on many aspects of the game. Good times.

I've had quite a few shinies over the years, and they are easiest to track down in Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee. I got about 30 in there.

Re: Super Smash Bros. Director Masahiro Sakurai Reportedly Considering Early Retirement

RudyC3

Let him get the rest he needs, we don't want another end like Iwata. I mean, Iwata got a bad tumour and work doesn't cause tumours but refusing to rest and let your body recover after surgery doesn't help with remission. Mr Sakurai looks seriously tired, all the time, and I believe he's been to the hospital once already.

Take care of yourself Sakurai san and お疲れ様でした

Re: Talking Point: When Was The Last Time A Game Cracked Your Top Five?

RudyC3

Alien Isolation is easily in my top 5 and I first played it on Switch. So the last time a game entered my top 5 was just about a year and a half ago.

I'd put in there with Super Metroid, Majora's Mask, Chrono Trigger and Banjo-Kazooie, rounding my top 5. (the original version of Resident Evil 2 would have been in there if Alien Isolation didn't top it as my favourite horror game).

Re: Review: Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne HD Remaster - The Best Version Of An Ageing Classic

RudyC3

Personally I had a very hard time getting in SMTIV at first, I wasn't feeling the initial parts of the game, but I kept pressing on and once you get to the Tokyo part and run around the streets, the story kicks into high gear and becomes really interesting. After you get some actual good demon fusions going, it was a blast to play through as well, as the press turn system is a lot of fun to break apart.

SMTIV Apocalypse is much the same, perhaps even better, but I really couldn't play my 3DS anymore, the screen was too small and I got way too spoiled by larger screens on phones and tablets to want to go back. I'll emulate the latter at some point, once I get a more capable PC that's up to the task. This game though, I got it preordered as physical copies probably won't last long after launch, especially in Europe.

I don't care about the visuals being a bit dated, SMT IV had 2D sprites for the demons and I didn't mind it. I care that it does not look like a blurry mess, but much cleaner thanks to the higher resolution, and that seems to be the case. I also care that it runs fine, which apparently it didn't on Switch when it came out in Japan last year but this seems to have been fixed through updates since then, which will be integrated into the game at launch for us in the west. So I'm expecting to have a great time with it, as someone who loved SMTIV.
